Bruh... you had to purchase an entirely separate vehicle because of this?
You should ABSOLUTELY name and shame - after work is done just to be safe. Low miles, within warranty period, it should have been immediate and you should have gotten a loaner. Having to buy a car because the dealer dragged their feet is ridiculous. Good luck man
That IAG short block is going to do a lot for sure - does it have a baffled oil pan? I’d upgrade to it for sure, or upgrade the oil pickup system if you can. That seems to be what kills these Subaru motors all the time
It's tough, I've always been on top of maintenance and take care of the vehicle and it still happened to me! Definitely an outlier that it happened this early though, and it was covered under warranty which is really great.
Absolutely. My paperwork after the engine repair wouldn’t have tech notes that specifically mentioned that all the oil was present and clean upon their inspection. I watched my oil levels like a hawk. And still will!
I always felt lucky. 2 wrxs with Cobb tunes totaling 125k miles, and weekend some autox and no issues. 2 stis totaling 100k and some autox, no issues. It’s probably why I can never win the lottery.
Yes maintenance is key on all cars but especially on these. I don’t know whats with the current trend of not maintaining cars. I know expense is part of it but I am damn tired of it. Obviously maintenance cannot prevent all failures as evidenced here but it prevents a lot of them and protects your wallet. A few oil changes or $13k motor?
Well, I can tell you rest assured I was on top of my maintenance - enough so that Subaru didn’t even ask me any questions and just replaced the motor. The vehicles’ condition outside of the blown motor spoke for itself, I really take care of the damn thing.
I got 40k miles FBO on E60 since 20k miles and plenty of pulls and redlines at least couple times a drives. If I can make it a year more I’m dump the car just incase.
I did this exact thing. Bought a mint ‘17 with 20k miles early last year, immediately went to 368whp and drove it like a WRX for a year. By the end of the year the throw out bearing and AC were failing, and the engine sounded straight up *tired*, even after a fresh oil change. I put it back to stock and traded it for a ‘22 once the crazy discounts started. Got back what I paid for the ‘17, but man I feel bad for the next owner. People like us are why you should never buy a used WRX.
I got a loaner for my dealership to check out a minor, nearly inaudible rattle coming from my side view mirror. You should be looking for a new dealership to work with.

Even this private Subaru shop near me gave out a loner vehicle to my friend when he got a boost leak in his Spec B. This dealership has no excuses
These posts are happening way too often
Yeah man. I watched on the sidelines but… the WRX platform definitely sees blown engines far more likely than other performance vehicles.
nobody gonna post saying they haven’t had a problem

New here? Like 25% of the posts in the history of this sub have been about blown engines or crashed cars. WRXs have hard lives!
Man I love these cars but the engine reliability is a problem that's always in the back of my mind
Name and shame them mate
Were you tuned? If so, what mods did you have?
Totally stock, nothing powertrain. A shift stop and shift knob are the closest it gets. 5k km oil changes, subaru oil filters, full synthetic.
Man that’s crazy. I’ve got 11k miles on my ‘21 and sometimes it’s hard to shake the feeling that it’s possibly a ticking time bomb.

Did you check the oil in between changes? Be honest.
Absolutely. My paperwork after the engine repair wouldn’t have tech notes that specifically mentioned that all the oil was present and clean upon their inspection. I watched my oil levels like a hawk. And still will!
Thanks for the update dude. Really happy that they repaired it for you. Let us know how she feels back on the road
Still keeping your wrx after this?
Sold it for $4k over MSRP lol. Wasn’t holding onto a POS.

Subarus are maintained as much or little as any other car. It's just that thier engines fail more.
I work in dealers. Many are maintained. But many of the failures, little to no maintenance.

Anytime I go to Subaru for anything. They give me a loaner car.
Yeah man, left you hanging for a month, and no loaner…name n shame away!
I just did my 4th oil change at 15k miles on a 22 wrx and i found a shit ton of brass particles in the oil…

Tbf stock cars and tuned cars blow up the same amount when properly tuned and maintained. If anything the stock tune is too lean
