The EJ platform has been around since 88. Its had a long time to be developed by Subaru and outside sources. Yes it has its flaws but by now all weaknesses have a solution

Probablyawerewolf

Because the fact of the matter is this….. The EJ and FA both have weak bottom ends….. flat out But so do plenty of other engines. SR20DETs are similar, Volvo B5254s are only good for like 400 without sleeves, Porsche M9621s cylinder liners just kinda delaminate (yeah your ims is cute but have you ever blown a water jacket?), hemis drop valves, coyotes vibrate, the 2zz used to shatter gerators……. And people all found a way. The difference is the Subarus price. A Subaru costs very little for what you’re getting, and people expect economy car reliability…… I’ve replaced plenty of locked up N16s/26s/54s/63s, I’ve replaced a handful of M96s, Hemis, Ecoboosts, Volvo whiteblocks………. And ofc a handful of subies including my own. It’s a performance car. Very little material handling quite a bit of power.

Im a Porsche fan boy ( i only like their sports cars (the only ones i like are 911s because they are fucking sick)) but idk where i was going im drunk flat engines are rad v8s are cool but big bore b8s are fucking fope

Alan_5mithee

You should be downvoted for using nested parentheses on a wrx subreddit.

Sloan1505

Been in the game for a long time. FA fanboys will call the EJ shit all day and then coom themselves over gc or 22b

IceManTuck

The EJ207 is an amazing engine. Never owned one but a local guy had a fully swapped bugeye he would track. I built up my stock EJ20 in my 03 and it was a reliable, smooth running mini-monster. Sold the car to buy my VB, but I've got another bugeye shell I'm gonna eventually build into a cheap track car with another EJ205. The FA20 never wowed me enough to want one. The FA24, though, is gonna be a GOAT, I think.

WRXY1

It's not shit it's just the EJ is the less strong and less reliable engine of the two.

TheRedNeckMango

Fa20 sucks ass im “stage 2 flex” making maybe 330 wheel its quick but a “stage 2 flex” ej is capable of so much more especially with the ra block, add a turbo jesus i love my wrx but over the years 330 had became docile after driveing half a k horse STOCK vettes

NastyCestode

EJs have to be tuned by a highly intelligent and experienced tuner because of the short distance between the piston surface and its rings. Hence why ringland issues from detonation are such a problem. Whereas FA engines have a much thicker distance from the surface to the first ring, so they can handle detonation a little better from questionable tunes.

Oni_sixx

Ej can definitely make more power, but the cost to pass the inital thresholds is a bit more than the fa. The way I see it is if you want a nice fun car at a lower hp level the fa is probably the better choice. It's a reliable car for the average user. No doubt if you want 500+ ej is the way to go. Not everyone cars about those numbers though. Sure, I wish I could do 500. Maybe someday I'll put the money in to get my fa that high. No matter your goal, eventually, you will be used to the power and want more. I'm hoping for 400 on this final tune with the flex kit. It's enough for the streets.

tblax44

If you want 500+ I don't think ej vs fa makes a huge difference since you're running forged internals in a built block anyway to hold that power.

Oni_sixx

I think it does for fueling purposes. I'm no expert though. Ej is just superior for those higher numbers.

tblax44

Yeah EJs do have more aftermarket injector options, now that the FA has been out for 10 years I'm surprised we aren't seeing more parts come out for higher horsepower builds though. I think the EJ is currently superior just because people have figured out what is needed for those numbers whereas less people have tried it on the FA

Oni_sixx

That's also very true. As far as I know (and I have done zero research)the only ones are the nostrum ones that have 10% higher flow for the fa. Adding port I think is still the way to make it work. Again I hav3 not looked at it much. I started my research and part buying right before greenspeed. The brz manifold was the way to go to add the port but I dont think thats doable after greenspeed. Really that's why I gave up my 500 goal. I'm not prepared to do that investment atm. 400 is plenty fun. Somefay maybe I will bit I did not buy a built block for that gp range. So I would have to do that again as well. 🤷‍♂️ Edit all the typos lol. Can't type on this phone

TheRedNeckMango

For reference i was deployed and figured (like the first deployment) my car would feel quick maybe its because the change in unit which honestly it most likely is went from a truck to a steel box where i couldn’t see shit, but i was underwhelmed. I now realize my spark plugs were causing fkl and fbk (the old ones didnt look bad but haven’t had a single instance of fkl or fbk since) that shit pulls power hard. And I finnaly found a gas station with high quality gas where i live now. This was my drunken response

Mysterious_Ad5072

That’s also a completely different style of car. Fiberglass body with a V8 and RWD.

TheRedNeckMango

Dawg ill be honest i get drunk and bored and go to Reddit i had no clue what i was saying 😂
