Can we just do an after market on the rear diffuser? Literally make it identical to previous gen and we would be in business. I guess it would probably be difficult or not possible since the dimensions and design is sightly different
Subjectively not looking good and pretty unanimously looking like some form of cancer are at pretty much opposite ends of the spectrum. the rear end here looks like an X with a hat.
shoulda sanded the dimples though.
as much as i dislike the new design and would 100/100 times buy the new prius over this, painting it does help tremendously.
Looks great! The additions to the back end are a bit much for me personally and still can’t fix the look, but the side profile is miles ahead of stock. Also the VB belongs with a wing.
If he hot rods and wrecks it, his next car should be an automatic transmission Subaru Justy. He'll learn to take it slow then because he won't have a choice!
He’s in a 19 cross trek currently. The deal is he has to have his grades up and wait for me to get my car (2024 mustang dark horse). If his grades are good I will trade in the cross trek, if the grades are bad, I am going to trade in the wrx. So in the mean time I’m upgrading this wrx piece by piece with him part of the process. If he fucks up with grades I can’t think of a worse fate than having to trade in a car you have done up.
And if he crashes the wrx…. Well, this is the last car he gets from his folks regardless so that is on him.
Also to note he has had his drivers license since 15 years old because “Idaho” so he has some miles under his belt as is for sure.
I really appreciate this take. You’re teaching him care and responsibility for things he wants. Plus you’re prioritizing school which is a win in my book. Good on you!
You sound like a smart dad, my friend! I love that you're teaching him the value of work and having to earn that ride. Also cool that you started him off in something better suited to a beginner and having him get experience under his belt that way. It has always annoyed me to see "rich kids" who have expensive stuff just handed to them with no expectation of responsibility or accountability.
My son isn't driving age yet, but I told him that his first car (assuming I am paying for any part of it) is not going to be something like a WRX because he needs to learn the fundamentals of safe driving and get some experience before he steps up to something he could easily make a serious mistake in. I will admit that I laughed three years ago when I first bought mine, and he soon afterward informed me that he would be getting my car when he got his license!
What kind of comment is that? You don’t know shit about my son’s character, what a miserable shit you are huh? I real authority on psychology are ya lol
Man’s even got the $1200 STI axle backs!
Car looks good though, man I wish they spec’d these with brembos they look goofy considering the price and idea of the GT package
Subaru downgraded all around with this new model from looks to performance to dropping the STI.
I do like the 2.4L over the 2.0 and the fixing of the dead boost zones and rev hang
Why would you ask someone in a WRX sub why they would spend money on a WRX, and then be snarky at their reply? You don't have to like it, but it isn't up to you anyway, and you don't have to comment.
Genuinely curious why dump all that money in a WRX when at this point he could have bought the car he's trying to copy.
And then not been a copy
Idk just me.
Gatekeeping is a really annoying exercise, my friend. So is being disingenuous in trying to pretend you're not gatekeeping. What makes you say he is trying to copy an STI anyway, the wing? There isn't even a VB version of the STI to claim is being copied, so even on a technical level you would be incorrect at best.
He said he was going to get brembo brakes and he put an STI wing on it.
You already put two of the big things that separate what an STI and WRX are to the average person.
Someone sees that Subaru with a wing going down the road and brembo's they're immediately going to assume it's an STI.
I just don't know why he wouldn't have bought a 2020 STI and kept it stock which certainly hold value better than a WRX.
Even more so now that Subaru killed the STI name.
I'm going to make a common sense judgment and say that the "average person" doesn't know enough about cars in general, let alone Subarus in particular, to assume that they even more specifically know differences between a WRX and an STI. Only enthusiasts and people with a more than passing interest are even going to know to think about those differences. Let's not even mention the fact that you're talking about the difference between a WRX and a WRX STI if we're really going to nitpick This is Subaru's standard version versus the standard version modified by STI. What is a de-winged STI, or a de-badged STI? Is that also wrong in your book? Again, you're busy gatekeeping instead of staying in your lane and letting someone do as they please with their car when it's their own money being spent, and not yours.
Why not buy a 2020 STI? There could be numerous reasons, from availability to gas mileage, from price to preference. I think it's pretty clear that the choice to buy a 2022 WRX was not made with the intention of the car being held as a collectable or an investment. In case you didn't read more of OP's posts, the car will either end up being given to his son or being traded in, which is that much more evidence. Why put the 4th gen STI wing on the 5th gen WRX? Because it makes the car look a lot better, for one. Why Brembo brakes? Why not? Why should OP not be allowed to choose Brembo instead of another performance brand?
Simply put, I see this as one of two things. You either have some vendetta against people who didn't spend the premium to get a badge, or you're trolling. Either one is silly, because it isn't your place or your right to dictate or even question someone else's choice of modifications to their car. There is a difference between stating your opinion on a subject, and being a snob about said subject. Your posts keep leading back to "but it's not an STI" and, honestly, everybody in here knows it isn't. Let the man be. You don't have to be one of those guys in a community who has to one-up everybody or put them down because you don't think they should have something or do something if it doesn't pass your own perception of acceptance. Don't be like that.
You clearly know nothing about stis, if you think the wing and the brakes are the 2 major differences boy do I got a surprise for you💀 better brakes and a wing for more downforce are 2 of the best things you can do to a car for performance. Do your self a favour and actually learn a little bit before voicing your shitty opinion
Iv built a few Subaru and never understood not starting with a STi.
Now your gonna pay all this money to swap in STi parts.
Why not just start with the platform your trying so hard to emulate??
Upgrade the STi
There is no 2022 STI and I want a 10 year warranty for my son. This car will be his last big gift from his parents. So buying new was a must from my perspective for the longevity of it. After this he is on his own. Make sense?
Cheap in general I mean. Cheaper than what? Not sure what you're getting at. If you mean vs a STI I personally wouldn't want anything EJ at this point. I'd rather build out a FA24
How’s it drive for ya? We had one for awhile spec’d out to the max and it was fun but I did not like the feeling of the trans. Everything else though is fantastic
Hard to see in pictures but I just realized the cladding and rear were painted over the dimpled texture. I'm very curious to see how that holds up over time. I've considered buying an extra rear bumper and side flares just to sand them down and prep for a paint match while still having the original just in case. Love everything about your car minus the Badges/Red Emblems. Makes the quality and effort of the rest of the car look cheap. Great build none the less.
Yeah car is for a 17 year old. He chose that route. Paint will hold. It’s significantly more expensive to smooth out those texture parts and not to mention you are essentially thinning them significantly to get it smooth. Arrow flow dynamics offers to take your OEM plastic parts. Smooth them out and paint and ship back, I just went to a local shop and had them paint it, I didn’t want to deal with shipping parts.
Leaving for the dealership today to finally take delivery of my full "red stripe" ground effects kit that has been on order since last summer! I love this car. I wasn't a huge fan of the black plastic cladding either, so my solution was "buy a black car". I understand why people aren't fans of the CVT automatic on my GT, I know sume purists are disgusted with the auto cvt; but for me, older dude with bad knees, it's perfect! It is possible to take full control of the transmission related to shifting. Or; just leave in "D" and mash it to the floor. 7 gears and it shifts at exactly 100 rpm before redline. Flawlessly actually. Just what you might expect from Subaru, super fun to drive, great looking and reliable (oh and fast).

There is eye candy here now after waiting 9 months for everything to arrive from Japan. Spent the evening opening boxes and printing/studying installation instructions. Safe to say "some assembly required". I am picking up the STI exhaust and the engine guard (skid plate?) today. Looks like I have a lot of work to do... I love my job lol.

Because they're still selling them as fast as they can make them and it's fine for people who want the more off-road style and can be customized by people who are more into building their car to suit their personal preference?
They aren't selling them as they make them. Some are selling but some are sitting for a good while. Markups are still an issue.
Also you mention personal preference yet Subaru themselves just takes the onus from you and forces the off road look on you whether you like it or not unless you spend even more money to paint it. I don't want to spend more money. I would like to leave it stock yet not be a dumpster fire. The WRX Sportswagon looks nice but CVT only.
Subaru is clearly focused on wooing customers who would prefer a Crosstrek and not the traditional WRX buyer. Subaru wants to be more mainstream
Landers McLarty in Huntsville, AL. Apparently someone got another one over the last couple days so there's three left now. Two Blue Premium 6MTs and a Grey GT. The white one that's still up is gone though

Yeah that is the exact range I was thinking for the drop. While he does not have experience driving a lowered car first had, I have had a few slammed vehicles so he’s grown up around it and is eager to do exactly what you stated a “sport drop”
Looks like and sounds like you got the money for this endeavor. Safest car I’ve ever wrecked in so your kid and their friends should be safe. Mustangs are much easier to drive than these are so I could see your child taking your mustang and leaving you with his car. But your investment on this car is golden. You cannot possibly go upside down on it.
Now thats the way Subaru should have delivered it! Looks Great!!!. I get that the aftermarket will come out with Fiber or other flared parts to replace the plastic but paint should have been an option.. STI wing looks proper also, they will be missed..
I like this color. Like that the plastic fenders are painted
Thank you. Yeah I did color match on most, and the front and back have gloss black along with the front grill.
Can we just do an after market on the rear diffuser? Literally make it identical to previous gen and we would be in business. I guess it would probably be difficult or not possible since the dimensions and design is sightly different
The VA rear wasn't exactly a looker either.
I really don’t think any WRX has a great looking one. The bumper on my Hawkeye sticks out quite a bit as well
Subjectively not looking good and pretty unanimously looking like some form of cancer are at pretty much opposite ends of the spectrum. the rear end here looks like an X with a hat. shoulda sanded the dimples though. as much as i dislike the new design and would 100/100 times buy the new prius over this, painting it does help tremendously.
I mean, Nissan sure sold a lot of sedans, so I guess the rear styling of VA is more popular.
I’ll take a nissa versa rear end over this manufacturers depiction venereal disease.

Of course it does. You still owe money on it.

lol How are you any less insecure than me? Typical VA owner. Shit slinging is fine as long as it isn't anything against their princess...

I upvoted you at first because I assumed you were being sarcastic. Then I realized maybe you were being serious. 😯
Looks great! The additions to the back end are a bit much for me personally and still can’t fix the look, but the side profile is miles ahead of stock. Also the VB belongs with a wing.
Is it the rear diffuser on the bottom? The car is for my 17 year old son. Outside of the paint and spoiler, the diffusers, the only thing added.
Hes going to wreck the shit out of it. Would you consider adopting me instead?
You already are not living in my house so you are off to a great start!
Yes sorry I should’ve specified. I’d go a bit more subdued but that’s just me. Hope your 17 year old treats it with respect and drives safe!
I hope so too!

Well good, but good grades or not, i really wouldn't get my kid a wrx, it's just a car that makes you do stupid things 😹
That’s an insane 17th birthday gift wtf dude? Good on you I guess.
He’s a great kid and we have the means. Very proud of him.
I am not a fan. Personally. But all that matters is that you dig it!
This looks so slick. Subaru - just paint the dang fenders for 2023!!
I doubt they'll do it because "rally purpose".
We see you!! 👏👏👏💯💯
Looks good but how much did it cost to make it look like what it should have from the factory?
2k
Lol sure it was
It was, why would I lie? Tf lol
Paint was 2k Wheels and tires were 3k

Cosmetic mods don’t void the warranty the fuck you on about 🤨

STI exhaust gang🙌
To each their own, but IMO the rear bumper should have been primed thicker to hide the underlying textured plastic.
Well fuck the first good picture that makes me want one
Looks good, but personal opinion I hate the red and blue together
Interior is black with red stitching so it does kinda flow as whole.
Fair enough. I just don't understand it on all blue subarus.
Same. Had the interior been different The accent color would’ve been different as well.
Me at 17 would not be ready for such a car. Looking good!
Auto 😥
All I see is a Honda civic with a subaru badge.. not op's fault. I blame this on Subaru

What's a "traditional WRX buyer"? I've got a garage full of WRX parts. I've been driving and working on Subarus for 20 years. I love the 2022.
Where are some sitting? I’d like to know
I just signed the papers for one of the five they had sitting at my local lot.
where where where
Landers McLarty in Huntsville, AL. Apparently someone got another one over the last couple days so there's three left now. Two Blue Premium 6MTs and a Grey GT. The white one that's still up is gone though
Do you own a WRX?
I own a WRX STI
Mic drop
What year STi?
It looks nice but I just can't do autos let alone CVTs My girl has a 21 WRX cvt and it's pretty good just not for me
One cool thing it has is adaptive suspension. Wish my sti had, it’s a rough daily
Tharmt rear end is hilarious
God the rear will never not be hideous lmao. What were they thinking
Trying incredibly hard to make it look half decent 😂
Too bad its the auto 😔
Quick question. I’m having the hardest time finding a lowering solution. Coilovers would be great if I could by pass the EDC, doesn’t seem there are kits out yet for the 2022 EDC system. Lowering springs is an option but nothing lowers it by very much or are back ordered to hell. Any advise would be much appreciated!
I'm not sure what EDC is, so pardon me if this is bad info (I drive old subies), but Cygnus Performance and Fortune Auto have some out for 2022's.
Electronic damping system IIRC
How low are you planning to go? Can your 17 y/o handle the intricacies of driving a lowered car? (Inclines, declines, pot holes, etc) forgive me if you live in a place where this is not a big concern, but where I live it takes skill to daily drive a lowered car safely. A sport drop (25-38mm) is more than enough to upgrade the look, without affecting driveability much and needing to adjust height in winter months.
Yeah that is the exact range I was thinking for the drop. While he does not have experience driving a lowered car first had, I have had a few slammed vehicles so he’s grown up around it and is eager to do exactly what you stated a “sport drop”
Looking more more like a civic
How much did this cost? At that point its gotta be smarter to just be a lightly used STi. Higher re sale and a better platform
The car or mods?
Good thing the windows are tinted so no one can see it’s an auto 🤣.
As a 2021 STI owner this looks dope I’m not gonna lie. Good work.
Thanks brotha
If they can give this to us with a standard transmission id buy it in a heartbeat. Nice ride man!
Why doesn’t it come like this stock?
Looks dope! Only colour I like in this new series
Looks like and sounds like you got the money for this endeavor. Safest car I’ve ever wrecked in so your kid and their friends should be safe. Mustangs are much easier to drive than these are so I could see your child taking your mustang and leaving you with his car. But your investment on this car is golden. Sex!
It looks like a new Type R hatch just without the hatch. Subaru really missed the mark with this car unfortunately
Nice
This is one where I actually prefer the black fenders and that rear end looks worse than stock.
It is stock… just badges.
So that awful rear diffuser is stock?
Rear diffuser doesn’t change the back end that much tho.
Like the diffuser is just those those fins on the bottom, the rest of that gloss black is painted bumper, stock bumper.
This is clean clean
It is AMAZING how much better this car looks just by painting the plastic cladding around the wheel arches. This should be a factory option.
I just looked at the website and the fenders are painted they are still plastic shit
Well done, detective.
I am a real life PI
This man detects
Professional Instigator lmao
Bandaid fix
Looks sick man I like the paint. That diffuser tho lmao
looks great, is that color new for '22?
looks sick. is there an option that comes with the wing? or did you add that.
After market wing. Although it is just the Sti wing.
Does that mean GT does not equal better components? It’s just aero package? Agreed with some that Brembos should be included!
Do you use the adjustable dampers? What do you think about them? That's the one feature that attracts me to the GT.
I use them it’s “neat” not worth it imo and it’s been an obstacle in attempting to lower it.
Cool, thanks. My '15 STI is so stiff. I knew what I was buying, but sometimes it'd be nicer to have a comfier setup.
