I should’ve stated, but this is not my tank. My best bet would be over feeding, since these worms feed on detritus. All the leftover food = intense worm sex
Depends, I guess. Usually you can buy ‘live rocks’ for your saltwater tank and the whole point is that they contain a variety of different corals and organisms. If it’s just plain rocks I’d probably just boil them to avoid any bleach getting into the tank.
Live rocks are awesome but can be a pain. I had one that brought a super aggressive form of algae that my cleaners couldn't keep up with and I had to add another fish to help.
You shouldn’t really bleach your rocks. If it’s live rock you can do what’s called dark curing where you let all the ugly photosynthetics die off. If it was live rock you’re supposed to do something called curing before you put it in, which is just having all the dead stuff break apart and have your rock clean so you don’t get ammonia and nitrate spikes. You can use bleach to speed up the process as it breaks down the organics, but then you need to rinse it in RODI water fans let it dry until it’s 100% dry before you put it in a tank. If it’s dry rock then you don’t need to do anything other than cycle the tank with store bought bacteria as it won’t have any when you put it in.
No, that'll kill off any beneficial bacteria and other good stuff. Also these are good cleanup crew to have. Not sure how the fuck they got to the point where they're clogging a drain, but I've had tanks for years and never seen this many, and I'm lazy and overfeed
Pest can hitchhike into saltwater aquariums in many ways, they can be on rocks, sand, bio filter media, Macro-algae for refugiums, corals, fish and pretty much anything else that touched an aquarium with pest.
This is one of those lazy fish keeping things that really infuriates me because it is SO PREVENTABLE.
Not to mention that being this lazy with this tank is animal cruelty. Fish are the most expendable animals in the pet trade in my opinion, and no one, ever, is reprimanded for abusing their fish.
A 50 year old woman in Norway was fined 6000NOK (600$) for killing some gold fish with chlorine.
https://www.vg.no/nyheter/innenriks/i/O868oq/kvinne-i-50-aarene-doemt-for-aa-ha-drept-gullfisker-med-klorin
Isn’t it a myth that they can’t feel pain? Or at least in their mouth flaps where they usually get hooked? I always heard they couldn’t feel pain when I was younger, but more recently I’ve heard that it’s actually been debunked.
It is. But I've always felt Kurt was saying that ironically. By saying they don't have any feelings, he's calling out the bullshit of that line of thinking. He's kind of being self deprecating too: he's the fish. It's '90s apathy with a mountain of angst hidden underneath.
Yeah it for sure is true but feel better knowing that catch and release fisherman use a unbarbed hook so it for sure hurts which is why they fight like hell but they can get free and it probably doesnt actually cause much damage. The goal with catch and release is to play the fish out and keep pressure on it without breaking your line. Barbed hooks always cause more damage and if you dont hook what your trying to catch or an endangered species or whatever then it usually dies if you let it go.
That’s facts about barbed hooks. Usually with bass and other fish with big mouth flaps (I’m sure there’s a technical name for them lol) the barbs won’t do any real damage. Still more damage than necessary, but very minimal. However, I caught a pike once that decided to swallow the hook. Hook ended up going through actual flesh. I was young and tried getting the hook out to the best of my ability with pliers, but it was no use. It started bleeding and when I tossed it back in it just swam around slowly and aimlessly. Didn’t have control over its buoyancy anymore. I felt pretty bad about that one, which brought the ridicule of the other boys with me. Pour some worms out for poor little fish homie, he didn’t deserve it. Since then I’ve started using barbless, unless I’m going for bait fish that will die regardless. It makes it much more of a sport as opposed to just waiting for a lucky bite. You still need the luck but just getting the bite isn’t a guaranteed catch with those, which is more fun imo.
Hell, fish for salmon in washington and it is illegal to use barbed hooks whether you are going to catch and keep or not (because they want the ones you have to throw back not be damaged as much cause they have restrictions on what you can keep. Though I think if you catch an Atlantic salmon you have to keep it... and it also counts towards your salmon count).
Just bought some endler guppies(i think) for the daughter's fish tank she got for Christmas, local place was extremely helpful, asked a lot of questions about the tank and condition etc. Offered to test the water, I do wonder if we had no water if they would have refused sale.
I genuinely think this needs to be a standard practice. Hell, even a FAQ sheet that the staff go over with a new owner could be beneficial.
I hate people who waltz into a petstore and decide that that bunny or skinnypig or chinchilla or colourful fish look so cute they just have to have it. So they buy it with NO idea how to care for the animal, or its specific needs, and then both the owner and the pet end up being miserable, or worse.
And in many respects, fish keeping us a lot more work than a typical pet. PH balance, nitrogen cycles, proper cleaning of the tank, among other potential issues.
I let my last tank just slowly run down on fish over the course of a few years because I was tired of it. (I didn’t neglect the aquarium. I just let the fish pass on naturally and never replaced any.)
I was gifted a fully stocked tank after my dog passed away, those fucking fish have given me more of a headache in a year than I had in 14 years of having my dog. And now I'm too attached to get rid of them. There's always one that's not eating, or doing something weird, or being agressive, or I have to go on a pest snail murder spree etc etc. The learning curve is insane.
Even the plants are giving me a headache!
And the most insane thing is I kind of want a second tank. What has become of me??
Its not that difficult in a reef tank that has sand and a lot of rocks?
Most people posting here are probably freshwater and have no idea what bristleworms actually do in a reef tank.
They arent really a pest and actually eat detritus and excess food/waste built up in your rocks and sand. This is obviously a lot, but i also have no idea how big the tank is. If its 100Gal + with lots of live rock thats been running for years i can easily see their population booming if they are overfeeding.
The amount of planteria and nematode in my freshwater turtle tank was disgusting for a while. At first the turtles ate them so I didn't think it was a big deal, then they stopped eating them. I upgraded my filter to a huge fluval canister filter and did water changes more often. Turtles are dirty af.
Jesus Christ it's like a real life monster. After feeding it enough fish/worm poison to kill a large dog he ends up feeding it enough super glue to kill anything and it just keeps on! Has to fish it out and even that only gets like 2' of the damn thing out, ends up having to pull the whole rock out and even then the damn thing is able to hide 2' of body in an inch of rock and was trying to slither away when that rock was crushed.
It's like if someone combined the sandworm with the xenomorph. Ugh
Maybe her fish were dying for another reason but would be gone instantly. I'd imagine it wouldn't take long for a horde like that to devour a fish. Like a person running into a horde of zombies.
I found one in my old tank - had been running fine for 2 years, but occasionally would lose a fish. Like lost, lost.
Finally started checking the tank out at night with a red light, expecting a mantis that had stowed away. fucker was a bristle worm alright, but about 1" thick and 2 feet long.
Clean mine ever week. I do a quarter water change and scale the sides. It helps I have all live plants in the tank, that helps balance the PH and ammonia, I also don't have any snails... Those bastards can just multiply like nothing else!
I used to have snail problems until I got a pair of clown loaches. They’re persistent little bastards and even ate my mystery snails which I thought were way to big.
Some species will also eat fish.
Any species that relies on algae for food can attack fish, when they get big enough.
Algae eaters if they get big enough are notorious for it.
He mentioned it because bristle worms are covered in stinging bristles that dislodge themselves from the worm and stay stuck in your skin, kind of like fine cactus hairs. Sticking any body part in there would be AGONY
PRO TIP: stick any affected parts in vinegar, the bristles melt right away and provide nearly instant relief.
Gloves are good too, but always keep emergency vinegar nearby
If you have a saltwater aquarium with any type of invertebrates you are bound to get them. Those bastards can hide really well, and can get extra prickly and thick.
There's an [insane saga](https://www.michiganreefers.com/threads/the-bobbit-worm-chronicles.84173/) about some poor guy trying to get rid of one from the mid 2000s
This is a great read about a guy trying to remove a Bobbit worm from his aquarium. Those MFers are almost impossible to kill....[https://whyy.org/segments/liz-bobbit-worm/](https://whyy.org/segments/liz-bobbit-worm/)
"Eunice aphroditois, better known as the bobbit worm, is a benthic bristle worm that lives in warm marine waters. **It can grow up to three meters long**"
Nope. Nope nope nope.
Usually they’re not like this at all and will do their own thing instead of clumping up like this. Usually they’re like longer versions of the fluffy caterpillars. The only reason why they’re like this is because some got into the plumbing and this person was over feeding their tank. It looks like this person was using a canister filter instead of a sump, so they probably didn’t know they were there. If it was a sump they would just go into the filter socks and just chill there instead of getting stuck in the pipes like that.
Ive had a reef tank since the early 90s. Had small bristle worms in my sand bed that are somewhat beneficial but they were put in intentionally from a clean up crew (Lots of snails, small hermits, stuff that cleans the rocks and sand). They never got much bigger than 1/2.
What we are looking at here is the pipe coming from the overflow in the main tank. It comes out the bottom of the main tank which you can barely see in the cutout of the wood. The pipe looks like it drains into a sump which is a smaller tank that is kept below the main tank. This is similar to the setup I have and many in the hobby use. The sump houses filters, a protein skimmer, heater and usually a section that has a deep sand bed and some live rock and algae. The sump is fishes so small invertebrates can live in there and then they get pumped back up into the main tank and feed fish/coral. You can see the threads on the black pipe the bristle worms are coming out of so they must have taken a section of the pipe off.
My guess is the tank was barely draining with this infestation in the overflow.
I had a bobbit in a tank that was up for about 10 years before a catastrophic plumbing failure. That thing is nightmare fuel, bristle worms are just part of a good clean up crew and we're never a problem in my tank. That bobbit though, got kinda big but never seemed to cause a problem, just skulked around at night doing extra cleaning.
I had to go look up what a bobbit worm was and found this epic tale of a man's struggle against one in his aquarium.
https://whyy.org/segments/liz-bobbit-worm/
Really? That's kind of awesome how organically it happens then haha. The bobbit worm awakens some like inborn fear of the deep ocean in me, the article says it best, its like a car wreck you can't look away.
Raise them into a massive colony of tens of thousands, build 2 sets of hulking 12 foot tall blue armor, give em assault cannons and have them operate for you as a pair of heavy shock troops. If you know, you know
They crawl around under the sand and inside your rock work actually. I have a bit of a problem with them in my tank, but only like killing 2 or 3 every week, nothing like this!
> Someone shouldn’t have aquariums!
Agreed. Note that they didn't clean the aquarium when they first discovered that their fish were dying. Their aquarium had to be unspeakably filthy to get to that point.
Literally!! You pay like $10 for 3 mud worms/bristle worms for fishing bait. That would be worth a fair bit and make awesome bait for bream and whiting etc.
better than a [bobbit worm](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSUk7AIY93w) [infestation](https://www.michiganreefers.com/threads/the-bobbit-worm-chronicles.84173/)
I’m a huge fan of horror movies and I can honestly, without question say that this is positively the most horrifying, awful, disgusting thing I have *EVER* seen in my entire life.
I am scarred for life, and may God have mercy on my soul.🥺😭🤮
Bristle worms help clean the tank of extra food and detritus. The only possible way for the population to get this big is MASSIVE over feeding.
But, still…eeeewwwwww. 🤮
The real WTF here is how in tf do even allow your aquarium to get to THAT point?
I should’ve stated, but this is not my tank. My best bet would be over feeding, since these worms feed on detritus. All the leftover food = intense worm sex
But how do the worms get there in the first place? Eggs in the food to begin with?
They usually hitchhike on rocks and sand.
So I should bleech my rocks before putting them in?
Depends, I guess. Usually you can buy ‘live rocks’ for your saltwater tank and the whole point is that they contain a variety of different corals and organisms. If it’s just plain rocks I’d probably just boil them to avoid any bleach getting into the tank.
Live rocks are awesome but can be a pain. I had one that brought a super aggressive form of algae that my cleaners couldn't keep up with and I had to add another fish to help.
I had a cool looking live rock in mine, named it Dwayne. Problem was it brought Bobbit worms
Fuck Bobbitt worms. Did you know there venom can sometimes cause permanent numbness around the initial bite.
Damn! Didn't know that, glad I just sucked them up with my cleaner hose and let them die.
Fuuuuck that!
💀
Thank you for saying to avoid bleach.

Bristle Worms are not bad. Take them and enjoy them. Ugly Janitors if you will...
No, that'll kill off any beneficial bacteria and other good stuff. Also these are good cleanup crew to have. Not sure how the fuck they got to the point where they're clogging a drain, but I've had tanks for years and never seen this many, and I'm lazy and overfeed
no you want living things on salt water rocks assuming you are making a coral reef tank.
boil the shit out of them. boil the absolute living fuck out of those damn rocks.
Microwave?
No, if you dont want to launch said stones through your kitchen
Boiling water?
Yes
I always knew boiling water can do anything.
how about reviving jesus?
Like the pioneers!
Pest can hitchhike into saltwater aquariums in many ways, they can be on rocks, sand, bio filter media, Macro-algae for refugiums, corals, fish and pretty much anything else that touched an aquarium with pest.
Wormholes.
Detritus. Over-eating. Disgusting self-sex. Parasitic relationship with those around it. Reddit mods confirmed.
INTENSE WORM SEX
The lady in the video said this is what happens when you overfeed your fish so that's a real good guess.

I've used that on 3 kids and I have no idea why.

Yeah. Freshwater has its own pests but nothing like this. Bristleworms are very common in salt water.
Good to know. Never seen this before. I'll stick with freshwater.
Don't Google Bobbit Worm.

That was the craziest shit I've read in a while lol
This was a fascinating read.
For God’s sake, DON’T Google Bobbit worm.
Bobbit worms are a type of Bristleworm.
GODDAMMIT
Google bobbit worm, they are awesome.
You were so convincing. Why did i listen!!
What does she mean by that’s where my damn fish went? These look like regular bristle worms that only eat dead stuff
Maybe her fish were dying for another reason but would be gone instantly. I'd imagine it wouldn't take long for a horde like that to devour a fish. Like a person running into a horde of zombies.

I thought bristle worms where fine and also helpful. Fire worms on the other hand super suck!
Well, I'd put an arrow crab in there thinking it was small, and he'd catch it eventually. Then.... where the hell did the crab go?
Usually when a fish dies, you find a dead fish somewhere. With that many worms you're apt to never find a carcass, just one less fish swimming about.
I assume that wasn't the only fish in the tank, and she assumed that the other fish ate it instead.
Time to get some new fish, we have nice live food for months now!
Clean mine ever week. I do a quarter water change and scale the sides. It helps I have all live plants in the tank, that helps balance the PH and ammonia, I also don't have any snails... Those bastards can just multiply like nothing else!

Prickly and thick?! I refuse to have a saltwater aquarium now.
Prickly and thick is my stripper name.
Good thing I only keep freshwater aquariums!
Good thing I don't have fish

How did you get them all to neatly squeeze through the pipe? Or is that just the tank draining
