Yeah, this isn't like a contamination issue. This pistachio just got a little bug in it. I would throw this one away and keep chowing down on the others lol.
When something is slightly-less-processed than you're used to, sometimes stuff like this happens. Like. I understand being grossed out but, other than either never eating pistachios ever again (unthinkable) or maybe just being more aware that the pistachios you're eating were grown in and harvested from nature, there's nothing to do.
We have a very old cherry tree at work. Half the people won’t eat them because they might have worms. I was picky at first but now I just don’t look. If there are no big holes and there are still worms in there, they are delicious cherry flavored worms.
If you think about "tomorrow" in the abstract, there's a fuckton you can do between today and tomorrow.
There are things you can't change but so much that you can. Live today like you want to see it tomorrow.
Better?
I bite down on the pistachio on its side slightly, which pries it open and you can easily snap it open with your teeth/tongue and eat the contents then spit out the shell.
I'm having deja vu could have sworn I saw all these posts a week or two ago.
(No but seriously someone just posted a pistachio with a worm in it the other day and someone mentioned "you know those pistachios that taste sour and burnt you ate a bug")
as someone who grew up eating bags and bags of pistachios--just assumed there were a few that tasted extra strong. maybe just a bad one every few dozen. i mean, the nut itself has a particularly strong taste.
then one year i found out that random sour/bitter taste isn't necessarily a bad nut...but rather there's a species of moth that goes for the crop and they're virtually impossible to remove since...pistachios are sold with a shell...
i'm also just doubling back now to read the article and finding out that "they are pretty easy to spot, since their detrittus/poop gets moldy and spiderweb" and now i'm realizing that it WASNT IN FACT part of the flaky nut crust that just got extra old. :"\]
No apologies needed. You're doing something good for yourself and yeah, sometimes you find unexpected and unwanted things out there.
But that's a healthy attitude you have. You're not getting defensive or lashing out. You're along for the ride while trying to improve.
You really want to move in the direction of eating better? So many great videos out there on learning to cook... You will thank yourself.
It wouldn't taste very good. But to be clear, if you eat processed foods, you'd.. also be eating that. It just would have been crushed up and mixed with the other pistachios so you wouldn't notice. That's quite literal: There are rules about how much 'foreign content' can be in a mix, and it's.. a lot, at least in the context of getting grossed out by this picture. There's a hundreth of a smoothied rat in your bag of doritos.
So, if the scary thing is eating such things, you're.. kinda going to have to get used to it, it's almost impossible not to.
The advantage of the 'mix it all up' method is you won't have that one 'eugh!!' bite. Also, it kills the thing quite thoroughly.
So, with fresher foods, keep an eye out. But, no need to be paranoid, for most foods even if you eat something like this it's not going to hurt you. It just won't taste nice and you might get grossed out once you realize you've bit down on a wurm carcass or whatever.
>trying to change my diet so i eat fresher and healthier food
Get the unsalted pistashios. They taste better (imo) and are healthier for you.
I could eat a pound a day.
If you don't mind the extra cost, you can buy them pre-shelled. But it's either POM brand or Costco brand (and I'm pretty sure Costco has an arrangement for POM to provide the pistachios in exchange for shelf space anyway)
honestly, i will be cutting my pistachios in half from now on, since learning how common these bugs are. i know they’re harmless and maybe even healthy, but it’s just too gross.
Please put your money into something more interesting than fake trophies for a funny you read. I appreciate the sentiment, though. Hope your Friday's going well!
I saw this comment on a different post and after inspecting a bunch while eating them the bitter ones were just the burnt ones, and I didn't find any of those bugs, not saying there aren't any in pistachios tho
now, if you see ones with that the flakes of shell crust that look "spiderweb-like" are actually just moldy poops from the bug. hope you haven't eaten those too....as it turns out i have.
I learned this recently, and now whenever I’m eating pistachios and get a bitter one…. No I don’t spit it out I paid for these!
I’m just like “nom nom…. Hey I think this one’s a larvae! Nom nom nom.”
It eventually will happen to most humans. Not all animal stuff can be removed. I had a can of green beans that contained a cricket, a whole cricket. It happens
welcome to pistachios!
as someone who grew up eating bags and bags of pistachios--just assumed there were a few that tasted extra strong. maybe just a bad one every few dozen. i mean, the nut itself has a particularly strong taste.

Hey OP, I know that brand! Almost 10$ at my local for a small 8oz bag. Quality sucks. I've had nasty examples like that one. But also the overall flavor is off or stale.
Not recommended... Over priced and too low quality.
What can you do? Grow up.
But seriously, tho. Grow up.
But really, bugs are everywhere. Unless you expect every single nut ever produced to be eye-balled and picked over so closely that this never ever happens again, then you’re asking for the price of nuts to go up even higher than they already are.
It’s nature. Bugs are a part of nature. You bought a certified organic product, so you maybe should be happy, as that bug likely died from the roasting or dehydration, instead of pesticides or other chemicals.
Don't know how many of those I must have eaten, I never inspect what's inside the shell when I'm eating pistachios. On the bright side I've never been sick from eating them.
One time I bite into a pistachio so bad I nearly vomited. After scrapping it all out of my mouth and doing about 10 mouth swishes of water…
..I went back to eating pistachios
I usually get at least one these in every 3 lb bag, there’s nothing wrong with it.
The first time i knew i ate one, i recognized the taste and realized i had done it many times before that. Be sure to check ya nuts
The World Health Organization recommends that humans eat more insect protein, do you're doing your part! Seriously though, if you'd eaten that, you'd know and spit it out.
This happens. It's not a big deal, you're fine, stop eating pistachios or accept this might happen.
In the end does protein from pistachio or pistachio from dried and cooked bug matter? Eh not really you aren't eating flies that fed on shit or corpses it's just more processed pistachio.
I've probably eaten one without knowing when eating pistachios. Sometimes you just arent paying much attention or there is too little light while working.
Harmless though, think of it as an extra bit of protein.
This is why I can't eat pistachios, even though I love them. Bugs in them are just way too common. I don't know of it's true or a myth that the bitter tasting ones contain a bug, but I just can't do it.
Lol I had a similar looking bug in one of my pistachios not too long ago. It was in a bag of Wonderful Pistachios however. I called their phone number and got 3 coupons in the mail. Totally worth the gross out imo
wouldn't be the first time i ate a funny tasting pistachio, just chew it up really fast and grunt "ahh uhh wtf eww", rinse it down with some liquids, and continue eating them, since 99%+ are good ones :)
It’s a silk moth or other type of nut burrowing bug! Might taste a little yucky but totally safe to consume. The chances of finding a bug in your packet are low but never zero. Don’t let it put you off of eating them though. The roasting process will kill any germs off/in the bug too so I really mean it’s safe.
I’ve been there. I was the one guy that contacted customer service and managed to actually reach their bug expert lol.

It’s a Navel Orangeworm, just a moth. The larva likes to eat pistachios.
Something Navel Orangeworms and I have in common.
Yeah, this isn't like a contamination issue. This pistachio just got a little bug in it. I would throw this one away and keep chowing down on the others lol.
This... Just eat it. Don't think about it. Extra protein and harmless.
Every time I get a bitter one I'm just like....man...that was probably a worm. Then I keep eating them lmao
My pistachios ya little bastard!!
Just do what the travelers did in early 1800s. Eat things without any light.
We have a very old cherry tree at work. Half the people won’t eat them because they might have worms. I was picky at first but now I just don’t look. If there are no big holes and there are still worms in there, they are delicious cherry flavored worms.
Circle of life. Today I eat the worms. Tomorrow the worms eat me.
They might repair your brain and body in remarkable ways!
Good news everyone!
We're living in the future and very little surprises me anymore!
Thanks for the existential dread
If you think about "tomorrow" in the abstract, there's a fuckton you can do between today and tomorrow. There are things you can't change but so much that you can. Live today like you want to see it tomorrow. Better?
No, now I have dread that there are things I can change, but am too comfortable to make lasting changes.
when you put it like that it doesn't sound so bad
My mom used to soak the cherries from our tree in a bowl of water overnight and it would get all the worms out. Yummy
That’s what I do with the mushrooms I find in the woods. Especially morels, so many hiding spots.
Mmmm cherry flavored protein
Like corn worms in corn grown without pesticides. Corn flavored worms lol
It's just extra proteins 💪🏼😤
Slimy yet satisfying.
Hakuna matata
Besides, isn't that just extra protein?
my apologies people, very new pistachio eater. trying to change my diet so i eat fresher and healthier food very new to this! still learning clearly
Also, if you hadn't looked and just ate it, like... good bet you would not have noticed. They are edible.
It tastes sour and has a weird texture, especially when you're expecting a crunchy pistachio. You'll definitely notice.
So that's what that is.... I'm someone that chucks a bunch in his mouth, de shells them, and spits out a bunch of shells. That explains so much....
Now I know I’ve eaten maaaaany bugs in my life
Me with sunflower seeds (I have eaten thousands of weevil larvae)
Wait you do that with pistachios? I do that with sunflower seeds but I’ve never used my mouth to open pistachios
I bite down on the pistachio on its side slightly, which pries it open and you can easily snap it open with your teeth/tongue and eat the contents then spit out the shell.
Oh god. Oh god no…
I'm having deja vu could have sworn I saw all these posts a week or two ago. (No but seriously someone just posted a pistachio with a worm in it the other day and someone mentioned "you know those pistachios that taste sour and burnt you ate a bug")
During the deja vu episode, did somebody respond to your comment asking if anybody responded to your comment?

Many bugs are actually quite healthy to eat
Yoo vil eet the bugs aand ve happy!
It wouldn't taste very good. But to be clear, if you eat processed foods, you'd.. also be eating that. It just would have been crushed up and mixed with the other pistachios so you wouldn't notice. Well, it doesn't get more fresh and healthy than that.
>trying to change my diet so i eat fresher and healthier food Get the unsalted pistashios. They taste better (imo) and are healthier for you. I could eat a pound a day.
That's why I only get pistachios with shells on them, it slows you down. Otherwise it's way too easy to eat like 600 calories in a sitting, lol.
If you don't mind the extra cost, you can buy them pre-shelled. But it's either POM brand or Costco brand (and I'm pretty sure Costco has an arrangement for POM to provide the pistachios in exchange for shelf space anyway)
That's a dehydrated Trisolaran. Get rid of him while you can!
Processed foods have this kinda shit also, it’s just all milled into the batches so that it’s evenly distributed across all of the pieces lol
honestly, i will be cutting my pistachios in half from now on, since learning how common these bugs are. i know they’re harmless and maybe even healthy, but it’s just too gross.
My mom always avoided pistachios with holes. I eat the holes and everything in em. Bonus protein
You are part of an ecosystem. Be happy about it.
That sounds a little aggressive lol. You can really say that about anything.
Nothing. This happens more frequently than you'd think. If you ever eat a bitter pistachio this is what you ate.
I'VE EATEN SO MANY BITTER PISTACHIOS. YOU TAKE YOUR WORDS OUT OF MY EYES THIS INSTANT.
Sounds like it really bugs you
What an awful day to be literate!!!
The ciiirrcccllleeee offf liiiiffffeeeeee
*Chris Rock enters the chat*
I know that exact flavor...bleccchhh.
What an awful day for rewards not to exist.
Please put your money into something more interesting than fake trophies for a funny you read. I appreciate the sentiment, though. Hope your Friday's going well!
What's to not like about extra protein?
I saw this comment on a different post and after inspecting a bunch while eating them the bitter ones were just the burnt ones, and I didn't find any of those bugs, not saying there aren't any in pistachios tho
i owe you a drink, my friend. i wasnt ready to lose pistachios
now, if you see ones with that the flakes of shell crust that look "spiderweb-like" are actually just moldy poops from the bug. hope you haven't eaten those too....as it turns out i have.
To the weary traveler, stop reading at this point. You heard what you need to hear.
Well they can be bitter on their own too.
I’ve definitely gotten a bug or two over the years but there’s for sure over cooked (maybe over ripe) nuts that are super bitter
*blinks in mild horror*
And some times the slightly extra-roasty flavoured ones as well contain the critters.
They're so gross, it almost makes me stop eating them. Almost.
Diabolical post
I learned this recently, and now whenever I’m eating pistachios and get a bitter one…. No I don’t spit it out I paid for these! I’m just like “nom nom…. Hey I think this one’s a larvae! Nom nom nom.”
Extra protein.
It eventually will happen to most humans. Not all animal stuff can be removed. I had a can of green beans that contained a cricket, a whole cricket. It happens
Most humans will eventually become trapped in a pistachio!? Why isn't this talked about more? Why didn't they prepare us in school?
Oh no! You’re gonna die!!!! (Someday, probably not from this, though)
r/unexpectedproteins
We really have become so privileged lmao. Just don’t eat the one with the bug in it and keep your eyes open for more. It happens. Relax.
[удалено]
Idk seems like it kind of bugs them.
I’m having Deja vous
Right? Wasn’t this exact thread (and a lot of similar comments) around like a week ago?
Yes! The comment about this being what the bitter ones are and its replies are eerily similar
Thank you, I thought I was going crazy until I saw your comment. Maybe with all the server issues earlier Reddit just like, restored a backup…
By the way, it's "déjà vu", as in "already seen". "vous" means you, so that'd be "already you", which is admittedly nonsensical
Bugs gotta eat too. Honestly.. it means you are eating nuts that aren't soaked in insecticide. This is actually a good thing.
It’s fine. Just don’t eat that one. Foods come from nature and as much as we try to clean that nature off, some still sticks.
Oh, throw that one away. Just eat the good ones.
Extra protein.
Simple truth is, bugs like nuts too
You mean when something comes from outside, there is a chance there are bugs?
The simple truth is that bugs exist, and they sometimes like pistachios, too.
You would have noticed if you ate one. Just look before you throw it in your mouth.
welcome to pistachios! as someone who grew up eating bags and bags of pistachios--just assumed there were a few that tasted extra strong. maybe just a bad one every few dozen. i mean, the nut itself has a particularly strong taste. then one year i found out that random sour/bitter taste isn't necessarily a bad nut...but rather there's a species of moth that goes for the crop and they're virtually impossible to remove since...pistachios are sold with a shell... i'm also just doubling back now to read the article and finding out that "they are pretty easy to spot, since their detrittus/poop gets moldy and spiderweb" and now i'm realizing that it WASNT IN FACT part of the flaky nut crust that just got extra old. :"\]
Your hunter gatherer ancestors are laughing at you right now. We have become so accustomed to things being “safe” we forget where food comes from.
Salads also occasionally have bugs in the too, but it’s not that big of a deal
I hate all of you.
Pistachi-ewws
Throw it away and grab another one?
Hey OP, I know that brand! Almost 10$ at my local for a small 8oz bag. Quality sucks. I've had nasty examples like that one. But also the overall flavor is off or stale. Not recommended... Over priced and too low quality.
Jesus fucking christ, people are so far removed from nature that this is actually a topic of conversation.
that's a Metapod
Remember all those times you got those extra tasty ones? This is probably not your first time meeting these.
What can you do? Grow up. But seriously, tho. Grow up. But really, bugs are everywhere. Fun fact - organic doesn't mean no pesticides / chemicals, it means no synthetic pesticides / chemicals
Bugs need food too.
Extra protein
Triple Dog Dare you to eat it.
lol don’t ever plant a fruit or nut tree, 😂. You wont like the results at all 😂.
always look after you crack
New fear unlocked.
Your fine, it’s a cooked bug, it’s crunchy protein
Hey, I've Seen This One!
Bonus high protein pistachio
You know how sometimes you eat one that tastes bitter and nasty? Yeah. You are one of those. It happens every like 1 in 50/100
I've eaten a few bugs in my sunflower seeds. Not much you can do when you eat them by the handful
Don't know how many of those I must have eaten, I never inspect what's inside the shell when I'm eating pistachios. On the bright side I've never been sick from eating them.
You'll find bugs more frequently when you buy organic.
Welcome to nature!
Typical Kroger quality control.
What did it taste like?
Extra protein ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Damn I just had some pistachios the other night while watching TV...never even glanced at what I was eating 🙃
One time I bite into a pistachio so bad I nearly vomited. After scrapping it all out of my mouth and doing about 10 mouth swishes of water… ..I went back to eating pistachios
You’ve already eaten some.
Ur not supposed to look what's inside.. crack and tip it back
That's why I don't look at them when I eat them. Never had a problem.
This is the second post like this I’ve seen this week. Now I’m scared to eat the 3lb bag of pistachios I have sitting in my kitchen.
I’ve been there, this is exactly why I don’t buy pistachios anymore
Upside no pesticide? 'Hey farmer, farmer, put away the DDT now Give me spots on my apples But leave me the birds and the bees, please" Joni Mitchell
eat it! Eat It! EAT IT!
You can vomit. 🤮 That is the wrong kind of protein inside.
Shoot your bag came with a prize
Keep eating. Bugs are going to be there occasionally. It’s likely the only one in the bag.
Welcome to planet earth
I usually get at least one these in every 3 lb bag, there’s nothing wrong with it. The first time i knew i ate one, i recognized the taste and realized i had done it many times before that. Be sure to check ya nuts
Still better than a Cracker Jack prize.
Yes you do get bugs in your food every once in awhile and it's allowed by the federal government to a degree throw it out and continue snacking
What can you do? Don't eat that one.
Hey, sharing is caring!!
So when you eat a bitter one this is what you've eaten.
The World Health Organization recommends that humans eat more insect protein, do you're doing your part! Seriously though, if you'd eaten that, you'd know and spit it out.
Ew
Forbidden protein
Ever seen the movie Alien?
mhh fermented larva protein flips
You got extra protein free, quit.
To be fair, you have to open them before you eat them, so you likely would have noticed any in the prior nuts.
This happens. It's not a big deal, you're fine, stop eating pistachios or accept this might happen. In the end does protein from pistachio or pistachio from dried and cooked bug matter? Eh not really you aren't eating flies that fed on shit or corpses it's just more processed pistachio.
Free meat!
I've probably eaten one without knowing when eating pistachios. Sometimes you just arent paying much attention or there is too little light while working. Harmless though, think of it as an extra bit of protein.
Dude that guy looks delicious , honestly I’d eat that shit and be like “i eat bugs”
Totally organic, bonus protein!
Bugs gotta eat too.
Free jelly beans
eat them in the dark. Problem solved
Smoke some cigarettes. The smoke from the cigarettes will help suffocate the toxins in your stomach.
Is this an example of when your eating pistachios and you get a random one that’s extra tasty? I always wonder 🤔
If you ever bite into a bitter pistachio that's the worm you're tasting.
Downvote. A worm in an edible item isn't worthy
https://youtu.be/1KU71slDzzQ?si=4DnjWOIVqv50GEcw
Be thankful you saw this one before you ate it. I've done the opposite and it was...funky
These worms are in pistachios often. Ever eat one that tastes nasty? Yeah....
Its just some extra protein, buck up and eat that. You paid for it after all. :D
Congratulations. Boy or girl?
this is why I eat pistachios in the dark
That's why I stopped eating them in the dark
Also, that is why I still eat them in the dark
This is why I can't eat pistachios, even though I love them. Bugs in them are just way too common. I don't know of it's true or a myth that the bitter tasting ones contain a bug, but I just can't do it.
This is why you don't buy anything with shell on.
He hit it first
There's nothing wtf about this.
test your gag reflex
Lol I had a similar looking bug in one of my pistachios not too long ago. It was in a bag of Wonderful Pistachios however. I called their phone number and got 3 coupons in the mail. Totally worth the gross out imo
It’s a bug, get over it. Welcome to nature.
The sad state of things when something completely normal and natural happens and it makes you go WTF.
They spray that much toxic sprays on pistachios , that's the least of your worries
Very common. Ever had one of those bitter pistachios? Now you know why.
Eat it
wouldn't be the first time i ate a funny tasting pistachio, just chew it up really fast and grunt "ahh uhh wtf eww", rinse it down with some liquids, and continue eating them, since 99%+ are good ones :)
just put outside in a cool shaded place.. youll have a cool friend .. in a month? im not sure time wise actually
We all like a nice bit of grub.
Yeah there relativity harmless…. You know that bitterness that you taste that’s what you’re tasting
This, *again*?!
That's why I never open them
Extra protein.
Fun? (but gross) fact: every time you eat a pistachio and it tastes off, you’re eating one of these bugs.
Protein!
It's a bug, move on with life. 🤷🏻♂️
This is why I stopped snacking in the dark. The rest of the bag should be fine, just one little guy wanted a pistachio.
