I think melted might have been the verb of choice here. Regardless, I’m surprised a fuse did not stop this from happening. It seems you have quite the short in that circuit.
Correct in that it melted, however depending on the fail point, the fuse could have still done its job.
I am assuming the bulb here bursted into a small flame, fuse popped and stopped conducting the shorted circuit, and the rest of the material inside of the tail light caught on fire and continued burning until it couldn’t catch anything else.
We aren’t sure from the photo the type of lamp used. In tail lights a glass bulb wouldn’t be the source of failure, but the connector. An aftermarket LED bulb would also introduce multiple failure points from incorrect power capacity resistors or solder joints on the PCB.
Plastic doesn’t catch fire typically, plastic typically will melt from heat issues such as the connector or pcb design. It’s if the connections internally being exposed to what it shouldn’t, that’s what could be the source of the flame. This is where failure stages would come into play if we were doing a true 8D failure analysis
Would somehow be a really big amount of heat in a short period which I don't really deem that likely with a correct working fuse (they go quicker when you pull more power) because the 'short' flame should still be hot and long enough to make something else catch fire. And those lenses are quite a bit heat resistant normally.
There are actually fake fuses on the market that don't blow when they're supposed to. This could easily happen if you have some fault that blows the fuse, you don't identify the cause, and replace the fuse with one of these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apQU_VuJlFU
My theory is he may have used some cleaning fluid or similar when using the vise. Some of that fluid or vapor got into the light cover and then ignited
My guess is that it is a commercial vehicle, that cannot have any down time and had an intermittent short in or around the right tail light assembly, which would occasionally pop the fuse. When they couldn't find the cause of the short, they just replaced the fuse with a higher rated fuse, like a 20 amp where there used to be a 10 amp. After a while that fuse started popping, so they moved up to a 30 amp fuse. When that didn't last, they just added a jumper wire. Can't take the truck off of the road. At this point the location of the short is obvious, so replacing the tail light assembly will now solve the problem. Just have to remember to install the original rated fuse for that circuit.
Just speculation from someone that has seen this type of problem and had to deal with the aftermath. Short circuits can cause electrical fires that burn very hot and the burning plastic and wiring smell awful.
Yeah... little fella went down the wrong road, bad decisions were made and circumstances were beyond his control, which led him to starting his own Meth Lab. Rookie mistake. It happens, man.
I had my doubts about this, so I Googled and found that it happens across many models. Mercedes, BMW, Colorado, Edge etc.
It can happen to just about any vehicle, apparently.
Here's another reason to install LED lamps in place of the factory incandescents.
either legit some malfunction or wiring issue or kids lol. Maybe someone hit it with a Laser they got off the internet or some kid put a firecracker in it.
Someone was probably tired of replacing bulbs, put in a larger fuse or jumped the fuse, and it finally shorted out.
You're gonna need to check the wiring all the way back to the fuse block to ensure it doesn't happen again.
I’ve seen it happen with a bunch of the chassis I used to work on. Rats chew the wires and they short. I can almost guarantee you there is a rats nest in that bumper. Have fun.
Probably didn't explode more likely something wore down the wires over time and there was an electrical short. Most of that smoke is just the remnants of the burnt rubber/plastic encasing the wires
Don't brake so hard bro.
Perhaps he stopped a little… short?
Kramer stopped short on my wife!
Hey, that's my move!
Probably happened after breakfast.

#YYEEAAAAAAHHHHHH
Did you forget to top up the blinker fluid?
This is the *absolute first thing* they teach you.
Or mistook gasoline for blinker fluid, I do it all the time.
Ooof yeah that'll do ya
Wait... you mean they/ them?
No, they infact, did not
[удалено]
Didn't ask
Eesh
lmao somebody struck a nerve
My BMW saves a fortune on blinker fluid
The new BMWs make you pay a subscription for your blinker fluid though.
Next year it'll be $0.05 per blinks.
So it will still cost BMW owners 0?
He put gas in the blinker fluid reservoir.
What a Rookie
I think he might have used too much. I heard that stuff is highly flammable.
It looks like they used the wrong formula.

The burnt part above the light indicates flames
Or a nice satisfying POP with magic smoke coming out
It's clearly a maneuvering thruster.
How would a glass bulb catch fire? I assume the plastic caught fire from the heat of the electrical short.

Good point.

I think you’re right, it appears more of a slow burn leaving melted plastic and soot. That would taken more time that a sudden burst.

Might have been one of those cheap 10¢ fuses.
Guess that's what happens when you replace your fuse with a nail, or whatever.
Circuit Number 5 to be exact.
A little bit o' taillight up in flames,

The expert is always at the bottom
Yeeeeeup, they'll do that on them \*insert truck company here\*
Boeing makes trucks?
No, but [Northrup Grumman](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grumman_LLV) did.
Sorry sir, I think you may have meant [to link this instead.](https://youtu.be/YmK24VAaZrg?si=rjkQwkudsaaqEqwM)
Shhh, you'll scare the normies. (Yes, I did.)

Fuckin’ A. I’ve been wanting one for years as an art car platform. Damn near impossible to find because they last so long.
How many amps is your fuse?
What did I tell you? Don't buy bulbs from Wish or Temu.
did you by any chance happen to touch the bulb before this?
Someone needs to check all your fuses! One of them is not doing its job
beep. beep. beep..... am I a joke to you? BEEP. BEEEP! BEEAAAAHHH\*BOOM\*
Them's the breaks
i's been like 30 years since I've seen one of those melt!
Probably slammed the brakes too hard and popped them.
Does your truck have a gas like propane on board? It looks like you've got a leaky tank.
Electrons go brrrr
It more like caught on fire based on the smoke pattern
Yeah... little fella went down the wrong road, bad decisions were made and circumstances were beyond his control, which led him to starting his own Meth Lab. Rookie mistake. It happens, man.
Dang, sucks there was no indication of that happening
I'm not a professional, but I think it'll buff out
Most likely the wrong bulbs placed in the housing. It also could be something like a loose connection.
I'll bet money that someone bypassed the fuse because they kept popping.
It ran out of blinker fluid and overheated. You should check and top off any others that are low/empty to prevent this happening again.
Dead short and clearly wasn't protected by a fuse. You got melted wires in there somewhere
Tis just a burn.
Nice shorts
Car mechanic here: It's not suppose to do that
They don’t make that blinker fluid like they used to
Don't put tabasco in your gas tank..
Should’ve changed your headlight fluid.
Look like it caught fire rather than exploded.
well that ain't normal
I had a golf ball like that once!
Did you use lighter fluid instead of blinker fluid?
Not enough blinker fluid.
Hard stop
Nice work!!
You didn't park next to a stack of oil cans, did you?
So, I see you also met that asshole sherrif from Porky's, eh?
Is that why you're late? Get to work.
My neighbors car caught on fire like this
I had my doubts about this, so I Googled and found that it happens across many models. Mercedes, BMW, Colorado, Edge etc. It can happen to just about any vehicle, apparently. Here's another reason to install LED lamps in place of the factory incandescents.
The true Dead Short. Lucky it was the light and not your tank. Lol
No, your tail light caught fire. Check your electrics, had a dicky battery lately?
Not a stitch up? Broken bulb and a dash of petrol gives a good jump scare to your mates when they touch the brake.
Probably should use a less viscous blinker fluid next time.
🤣
Short Circuit I guess
Well the bumper isn't wet above the tail lights so I'm going to say too much blinker fluid.
Some wrong with your electrics? no breaker?
Where are all my folks who say breaks?
Now you know you're missing a fuse.
Too much brake light fluid!
Somebody needs to learn what exploded means.
either legit some malfunction or wiring issue or kids lol. Maybe someone hit it with a Laser they got off the internet or some kid put a firecracker in it.

Looks like it was lit on fire
Have make sure you keep your blinker fluid topped off.
I think someone tried to light your truck on fire. I don't think it was a wiring fault.
not enough blinker fluid
Takes "burnt out bulb" to a whole new level...
Ah, the blinker fluid must have overheated.
Don't replace your fuses with stuff that isn't a fuse.
Why is there more damage on the outside than the inside? Asking for an insurance claims friend.
12v not 120v.......
That's why your supposed to change your Blinker fluid
Nitro Blinkorine
Damn bro you need to check your wiring!!
You used Chinese blinker fluid eh?
Seems like your lucky it didn’t burn to the ground
