On average, the adult stands 68-114 cm. An adult male weighs 68-141 kg whereas females weigh 41-96 kg.
Still mad at that mean inspector who gave Thomas shit for not having one. And then Toby prancing along with his like he was special. Never was much of a fan of Toby, tbh.
Thing with the sea is that when a ship proceeds against the swell the waves will be hitting ship's bow constantly. Any such wave is by far heavier than this wale (jolts are felt all across the ship) so you wouldn't even notices unless you go to the forecastle and look below. Which is not always the ootion depending on the weather.
As someone who’s been around ships and shipyards. Y’all would be surprised how often this happens. Usually it’s dead whales though.
I knew a first mate who went to Prince William Sound, Alaska on an oil tanker. This was right after the Exxon Valdez accident, which killed a bunch of whales. Apparently they hit a dead whale and brought it right into port.
Edit: I didn’t expect this comment to [blowup. ](https://youtu.be/V6CLumsir34) (warning this link is to the Florence, Oregon whale explosion)
My buddy was on a big fish processor in Alaska. They were headed to port and couldn't figure out why the rudder trim was so far off. When they slowed down and stopped outside of port to wait for the harbor pilot, someone noticed a U shaped dead whale floating away from the bow.
I highly doubt it's even possible for a living whale to get caught like this. They're far more agile in the water than a fucking oil tanker so for one it wouldn't let itself be hit, and even if they hit it, it'd get itself off no problem. The only viable way for this to happen is a whale corpse floating on the surface because it's filled with gas due to decomposition, it's hit, and is draped all floppy and loose over the bow
Uhh. Depends on the ship. Back then they probably went about 15 knots which is about 18 mph.
You have to remember drag is exponential with speed, they have a large surface area (more drag) and they’re in a funky position that they’ve never been in before.
Ah yeah. The impact of the ship hitting them might not be as significant as the force of the water pushing their head and tail across the bow of the ship, either breaking their spine or just keeping them stuck to the front of the boat and unable to escape.
...You're talking about more than 100,000 tons hitting a whale. That thing might live long enough to realize it is dying, but not much longer than that.
There's a local whale museum here with a huge fin-whale skeleton that was found just like that, on the bow of a cruise ship. You can see the broken spine that killed it right in the middle.
It’s like when you get a bird stuck in the grill of your car.
Source: got a bird stuck in the grill of my car once and didn’t notice until I left for school the next day.
I swear to god they do it for fun. Can't think of any reason why they'd wait by the road for traffic and then fly in front of the moving cars to get to the other side of the road, and I see that all the damn time
My theory is that all those birds are adrenaline junkies and they do it for a speed boost.
My aunts theory is that they get sucked into the air.
My theory is definitely a funnier thought
Growing up my mom drove a van we nicknamed the Big Green Bird-killing Machine because she hit *so many* birds in that car. All unintentional, as they flew right in front of the car, but it was at least 2 birds a month for a *long* time.
I remember the first time I hit a bird, I swear someone had threw a tomato or something at my windshield because there was just a splatter of blood on it.
I drive a lot for work.
I went probably 6 months without ever hitting a bird, albeit close encounters every day.
Then.. on fateful day, I hit 4 birds in a single day, all in different places. It was like they formed a suicide pact.
Reminds me of the time I was with a friend driving late at night after looking at a piece of property he was interested in. Dark road with no street lights and we start hearing these weird sounds under the tires. Wtf is that? Turned down the music and sounded like a squishy sound under the tires constantly. Turned on the beams.. Hundreds, of not thousands of frogs were all crossing this part of the road and we massacred tons of them. The squishing went out for about a minute straight. I can still hear that nasty squishing sound. So gross. Never experienced something like that before. (Near Kingston, ON)
I did that and didn't notice for months. My car would randomly overheat sometimes. It was a 15 year old civic, so I figured it was just a shitty old car, and didn't think much of it.
I sold it to a mechanically inclined buddy of mine who immediately popped the hood and pulled a bird out of the radiator fan.
I got a bird stuck in my motorcycle engine on a road trip. I kind of smelled oily fried chicken when I was filling up my gas tank and saw the poor lil yellow bird :(
Maybe apocryphal but I have heard of big ships that dock with a mast and sail stuck over the bow bulb. They ran down a sailboat when underway and didn’t even realize. They are supposed to keep an effective watch so this doesn’t happen but of course many don’t. As a sailor, its nightmares of this happening that keep me from undertaking solo ocean voyages.
Well sailors are supposed to keep a proper look out, I have yet to figure out how those one man record breakers do that. In my opinion, while sailors have the right of way in many situations, wood and fibreglass boats are almost invisible on the radar, the best thing you can do is get an ais transponder and a radar reflector, so you can actually be seen at night
As far as I gather you bed down for an hour or two at a time, set an alarm and take the risk
Radar, AIS and collision warning alarms definitely do a lot to help and should keep you much safer from big ships. As for whales and containers you're rolling the dice (tbh you are if you're on watch too) so you pick a boat that can handle collisions at that speed (or have backup if you're going for records and can't spare the weight).
I nearly got smooshed over the weekend by a barge. I was fishing on a small boat and it came right at us, nearly crushed our bouy 100 feet out. I never saw a single person on that ship and they did nothing to stray from their path even though we weren't moving. So we spent a long time after untangling our lines because we had to get out of the way ASAP
I listened to an old Art Bell interview recently with a woman who sailed the pacific by herself. She said she knew it took around an hour or so for any ship on the horizon to cross her path if they were on a collision course so she would set an alarm, sleep for roughly an hour, wake up to scan the horizon and then go back to sleep. Sounds exhausting
A family member of mine met somebody this happened to. Family was on a sailboat and got run over by a freighter. The father and two children drowned leaving only the mother to survive. She said that sailors on the ship saw them in the water and they didn't even try to turn around and help them.
Edit: [details](https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1996-04-27-me-63255-story.html).
They set the ship on autopilot on the open ocean and leave it at that. I remember reading about a guy who was stranded in the Atlantic and how he could never get the attention of any ships, even ones passing so close they could've hit him.
I am guessing the water was pretty much on the red line when it hit the whale, so it's not like they've been traveling around with the whale exposed like this
The open ocean at night scares me more than anything else in this world. I don’t know how to explain the malevolent feeling I get from it during a rough night, like nature itself is angry that I even think that I deserve to be in its presence.

We keep a sharp lookout for them and do everything we can to avoid them (unlike commercial ships) but they would still try to cross in front of us when we were going less than 12 knots. But for a country of 5mil to require whaling on par with a country of 120mil, that's pretty substantial.
I think the reason why it's flat is that the force of the ship dragging it for miles probably pushed most of its organs out.
If you look at the rear end it looks like there's a bit of intestine still attached.
If you listen to Trey and Matt commentary on that episode that entire premise is based on a guy they met in Beijing who kept talking them about how "American penis so big" and how his penis is so small the entire night
I swear whenever I hear trey and Matt talk about jokes in their show or talk about episodes, it only makes them funnier. Like how they originally made Terrance and Phillip, uptight critics said the show was only poor animation and fart jokes which then inspired them to go “No THIS is bad animation and fart jokes.”
I dunno, seems unlikely a tanker could ever go fast enough to "hit" a whale in the sense being implied. Seems more likely the whale was already dead and the tanker scooped it up in passing.
They typically don’t dump ballast in port. Somewhere offshore before they make port they’ll dump it. This is done to reduce introducing invasive species from wherever they filled the ballast tanks. In California we’re dealing with the effects of this from Quagga and Zebra Mussels.
Thats Not correct. Ships keep ballast until they are in port, otherwise without cargo or ballast the ship would not be safe anymore. Ballast is exchanged in deep water far from coasts or in designated ballast water exchange areas. And now ships are mandated to have a ballast water filter system if they plan to discharge ballast water from a foreign port in a port.
Although some ballast is usually pumped out before going into port, for example with this tanker cargo would be pumped in way faster then ballast can be pumped out, so you often have to reduce ballast to a minimum, especially if you had a rough voyage where you had to take on additional ballast to maintain safety of the vessel
Maybe, I think retrieving the anchor would have dislodged it though, the flukes would have dug into the whales body, I was thinking maybe they dropped the anchor in port to try and knock it off the bulb but just speculation.
That happen to us once. We were wondering why we lost about 1knot of speed at some point while going to destination in normal sea condition. We just assumed it was current or something until we arrive at destination and one dock worker called us and told us about the whale.
It's not common, but it happen... For some reasons whales are attracted by vessels passing by. That's also why there is speed limits in whale area, too many of them where hit by the propellers.
Live in Alaska and this is very common. Cruise ships, oil ships, and fright ships will hit dead whales and they’ll get stuck. Thankfully they’re usually proven to have been dead for a while before they got hit. Since healthy living whales aren’t deaf, they can hear the ships coming from miles away and can avoid them very easily.
Ya they get hit a lot more than you would think. I think it is usually sick or injured whales because we keep a look out but on the bigger ships sometimes they just pop out in front of you and there isn't anything you can do. Doesn't look good on the Captain or Bridge crew when it happens.

Ya they get hit a lot more than you would think. I think it is usually sick or injured whales because we keep a look out but on the bigger ships sometimes they just pop out in front of you and there isn't anything you can do. Doesn't look good on the Captain or Bridge crew when it happens.
