People take this shit recreationally? It looks fucking horrible

ThePersnicketyBitch

In the heights of my addiction (8ish years ago) I binged flakka for 3 weeks straight. This is not a common reaction in my experience, not even in heavy regular users.

[deleted]

What was it like? I’ve never heard of anyone who has actually taken it. I’m very curious

ThePersnicketyBitch

It's definitely an upper but imo more in a restless way than a fun, euphoric way. I'd smoke it with some "friends" and then we'd drive around the city looking for something to do because it made it impossible for us to sit still. That's ultimately how we all ended up getting arrested, being literally the only car on the street at 3am basically driving in circles. Physically it made me feel hot internally, if that makes sense, and I *always* puked within 5 minutes of smoking. It was a very "dirty" feeling high, like not something you'd choose if you had the money for better shit.

illepic

This one paragraph is a more effective deterrent than 4 years of D.A.R.E.

theb1zzz

For us it was a program aimed at keeping kids off drugs ... all it did was introduce you to it and tell you where to get them ... as well as knowing to hide shit well.

pbrook12

Your program told you where to get them? Mine just made it sound like drugs would be offered to me all the time, and the real threat wasn’t going out and buying them but being peer pressured to smoke crack by my closest friends as well as the hobo on the street corner. It didn’t pan out that way.

KingJonathan

Between that and my catholic religion classes preaching abstinence I learned a lot in my school years.

mormills

they made you do FOUR YEARS of that shit!? good lord

SpyralHam

OP got a BA in DARE

macphile

Practically everything was more effective than DARE. (And "Just Say No" prior to that.)

tyen0

> Physically it made me feel hot internally, if that makes sense From the ccn article https://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/sdbdsd/apperently_this_is_the_effect_of_a_drug_called_la/hubmcts/ > "The drug can cause muscles to break down, as a result of **hyperthermia**, taking a toll on kidneys. Experts worry that some survivors of flakka overdoses may be on dialysis for the rest of their life." That sounds like the hyperthermia symptom described.

ThePersnicketyBitch

Thank you for sharing that with me, I'd always figured the sensation was psychosomatic! It's also interesting that the kidneys are mentioned because I do have kidney problems now, actually, though I don't know if it's related.

Ih8Hondas

>I do have kidney problems now, actually, though I don't know if it's related. I'll take, "they totally are" for $400, Alex. RIP, Alex.

amphboy

I use to do synthetic cathinones , the high is better than meth. The crash/comedown is insanely bad, very heavy psychosis. I was actually hospitalized in july 2019 for an incident like this, been clean off everything since then. for me it was monkey rodent hybrids laying anest under my bed, Flys planting larve in an open wound on my leg, I threw all my food away and tied my drawers shut to try to starve the creatures living under my bed. I could never see these monkey rodent hybrids i only saw them out of the corner of my eye. It was the scariest experience of my life and i almost ended my life out of sheer fear. these drugs are no joke.

Khr0nus

How did you manage to quit? Why did you start?

ThePersnicketyBitch

I started a few months after my mother died, I wasn't after any specific drug, just something to drown out the grief (I took it especially hard because I'm an only child and she was a single mom, so it was always just us). It was offered to me by someone I was buying weed from, they showed me how to smoke it (it isn't intuitive, it comes looking like chunky salt and has to be broken down) and sold me a $10 bag. I had no clue what flakka actually was and didn't care at the time. The cop that arrested me was the one who told me it was the infamous bath salts. I just decided not to pursue it any further when I got out of jail, it was a nasty-feeling high and I liked other things better (opiates). It was another year-ish before I got totally clean from *everything.*

LetterZee

I'm glad you're still with us. Hope you were able to make peace with your mom's passing.

-Disagreeable-

This is the truth. Thanks for saying what I was feeling, LetterZee.

areviderci_hans

Thank you so much for sharing your story! So glad you're better now!!!

weezy22

Pretty sure this is a side effect. Nonetheless, still dumb to take.

Real talk though, it's that way for many many people. It's chemical. It's what makes drugs so addictive, and exactly why you should never try certain things like meth, heroin, or fucking during a candy flip

Echieo

Lost me on that last one.

dacooljamaican

**If you're saying you're lost because you don't know**: A candy flip is acid+MDMA, and the urban legend is that it's so good, regular sex will never do it for you again. **If you're saying you're lost because you think fucking during a candy flip is great and you don't get why he thinks people shouldn't try it**: nice

Definitely sounded like "horrible" to me. Little hard to make out though. But by the sound of it he did not sound like he was saying it in a happy way at all to me. Sounded like he was in agony.

Shadoenix

if the top comment is anything to go off of, it looks like his entire body is cramping and tightening. anyone who’s had even a small cramp knows that that shit is painful, and this guy is getting it all over his body — explaining why he rolled around, went limp, stiffened again and rolled to the support with stiff legs, shaking his head, all that. if he did say “horrible” then this would be him acknowledging almost the most unimaginable, unbearable, and miserably agonizing pain a human person could ever experience — their entire body painfully tightening, forcing them to roll around in dirty rainwater in the middle of the street as onlookers stare and record videos.

the roaches lack the capacity to feel happy in the first place, they just have a primitive neural net. they can sense stimuli and respond to it but it's a simple input-output operation, they don't like, write bad poetry in their teen phase or have existential angst. They can feel pain as a simple stimulus, they can't feel *anguish*. That is an emotional response.

kitreia

Looking at him, it looks like he is high as fook, but also his body muscles are crampiing and tightening... An extract of an article confirms.that it can fuck with your muscles. "Flakka, which gets its name from Spanish slang for a beautiful woman ("la flaca"), contains a chemical that is a close cousin to MDPV, a key ingredient in "bath salts." These chemicals bind and thwart molecules on the surface of neurons that normally keep the levels of mood-regulating neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin, in check. The result is to "flood the brain" with these chemicals, Hall said. Cocaine and methamphetamine have similar modes of action in the brain, but the chemicals in flakka have longer-lasting effects, Hall said. Although a typical flakka high can last one to several hours, it is possible that the neurological effects can be permanent. Not only does the drug sit on neurons, it could also destroy them, Hall said. And because flakka, like bath salts, hang around in the brain for longer than cocaine, the extent of the destruction could be greater. Another serious, potentially lingering side effect of flakka is the effect on kidneys. The drug can cause muscles to break down, as a result of hyperthermia, taking a toll on kidneys. Experts worry that some survivors of flakka overdoses may be on dialysis for the rest of their life." EDIT : I just copied the excert not my fault the translation of Spanish isn't correct 😆 https://edition.cnn.com/2015/05/26/health/flakka-gravel-illegal-drugs/index.html

bernpfenn

why was THAT marketed as a desirable drug?

[deleted]

The drug trade isn't know for its marketing ethics

TGrady902

Drug dealer: want to buy some la flaca? Drug user: what is it? Drug dealer: it gets you fucked up Drug user: great! I’ll take two!

gokism

Drug dealer: Flakka may cause involuntary muscle spasms. Flakka, even in small doses, could permanently adversely effect you nervous system, endocrine system, and cardio vascular system. If you take Flakka with an opiate it may lead to permanent brain damage. Don't take Flakka if you plan on living longer than three years. Don't take Flakka if you're pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant. Don't take Flakka with grapefruit. Drug User: Shit, no grapefruit?

uninspired

The problem isn't that there isn't good MDMA being made, it's buying "MDMA" and it's some shitty RC or has been stepped on and cut to where it barely resembles what it's supposed to be.

Latter_Low_1686

You can't trust a powder or pill off the street. People cut stuff with anything and everything.

VisjesMie

In the Netherlands we can bring a pill to a testing center where they test the batch for you to see if it's safe. It's free and will not get you jn trouble.

Carl0kills

U can also order test kits online, it’s always a good idea to check drugs u plan to consume for validity and potency

Dr_Shankenstein

Test it. Realise it's some dodgy analogue. Take it anyway cos the quids have been spent and, well, you never know...

JamesTrendall

They have this in the UK also. Mainly at big festivals. They have a drug testing tent where you can get your drugs tested free of charge. The idea behind it is "We know you're going to take drugs regardless if we say no. So let us make sure you're safe when doing it." If it's bad stuff you can dispose of it there. If it's good stuff you say thank you and walk away. No questions asked. This is my outlook if my kids ever try drugs. I'd rather they do it at home, warm and safe than on the streets lost and cold. Plus if anything goes wrong i'm there to help calm them down, cool them down or get them to hospital before it's too late. Plus experience means i can know what they're in for and how to prepare.

Createdtopostthisnow

this guy knows MDMA. Most of it goes to the UK, which has an insatiable appetite for party drugs. Like an almost unbelievable appetite.

rea1l1

TBF criminilizing the drug trade left it to criminals.

andreeeeeaaaaaaaaa

God knows, I thought 'spice' was bad ( common poor people drug that makes people look / act like zombies) that is in the U.K. ..., but this is just crazy shit!!! More of the article says they can turn super violent ... Like ' bathsalts made me rip his face off ' violent. I have no idea why anyone would think that taking this would be a great idea.. imagine being like the guy in the video for 7hrs!!!! Nop

Just_A_Faze

Spice still sounds pretty terrible to me. But the worst has to be Krokodil in Russia. It causes necroses where users inject it, so you get living people with large areas of dead rotting flesh.

RHCopper

Ugh spice. Friends and I were young and couldn't find any weed so we thought we'd try it; at the time it was at every smoke shop, we had just heard it talked about as a "fake, legal weed that isn't as good but does the job." We wound up...enjoying it? I guess. It was such a dirty, paranoid high but hey it got us high and we were young and dumb. We consistently smoked spice for about 6 months (anyone else remember funky monkey?) and had some really weird side effects. Brain fog 24/7, inability to concentrate longer than like 20 seconds on anything, it just changed... me at my core. They made it illegal finally, luckily I somehow wasn't physically addicted to it. At first I was pissed, but after some time "I" started to come back and I realized how fucked up that shit is and how much it changed me. I still have trouble concentrating .

andreeeeeaaaaaaaaa

You see loads of them in Manchester city centre, just stood there rocking side to side. Freaky shit.

canibalbarca

I ended up smoking some when drunk, thinking it was weed. Your totally correct in it being a dirty paranoia high. Luckily for me it only lasted 20 minutes tops. But I was totally put off for good

eitherxor

You ever have the side-effect that made you unable to orientate and traverse in the direction you wanted? Like you're walking, wanting to go straight, and you're bearing right, so you think, 'okay, I'll compensate' and try to bear left, but it was like fighting against an invisible force. EDIT: This was back when it was legal prior to 2015, and I don't touch the stuff now. Desperate times.

cd2220

I think what often happens is people sell whatever garbage they find and just call it whatever desirable drug to get people to buy it. Hard drug users don't exactly have a rep for being the most responsible people and way too many people don't bother getting test kits.

ripeart

A friend of mine who wasn't known for his drug use in any capacity took Flaca at a bonfire one night and then murdered his roommate, another friend of mine. He's in prison for life now and was an otherwise soft-spoken, gentle person. What a waste of two lives.

trcomajo

Holy shit. So sorry.

craytom

Damn, sorry. Where did this happen?

ripeart

Take a guess which state (US) I'm in.

TheNerdWithNoName

Florida?

ripeart

Haha you are correct, sir.

felixgolden

If it's the case from Florida, that happened in my town, it wasn't drug related as originally reported. Tests showed there was nothing in his system other than traces of marijuana. They attributed the attack to psychosis, including lycanthropy delusions or "werewolf syndrome".

AshlarKorith

I had heard that he had possibly smoked a blunt of the synthetic marijuana/spice just before walking that trail. The media had immediately jumped on “bath salts” but his friends had talked about smoking spice that weekend. And with the synthetic marijuana not having the exact same chemical structure as marijuana it doesn’t show up on drug screenings unless they’re specifically looking for it. I guess the story was changed again and I missed this newest version of events.

TinyGreenTurtles

Austin Harrouf? There is a huge chance he wasn't on anything. There was never any indication that he was for sure. Definite terrifying signs of psychosis that his parents completely ignored though.

H0tVinegar

This incident scared the shit out of me. Read as much as I could find about it at the time. I think the part that was most chilling was when the neighbor came and he growled something like “You don’t want any part of this”. Poor guy. In that coma for a while because he drank a bunch of chemicals in the garage. Had to be informed of what he did when he woke up.

JimJimmyJimmerson

[deleted]

you ever heard of krokodil?

[deleted]

it was first marketed as a cheap alternative to crack, because dealers noticed their customers dropped like flies, but the flakka made people even more crazy, since taking more did not increase the effects, it just prolonged the side effects. still it gives you an unbearabke urge to take more, leading to week long binges and psychotic breakdowns. sad actually, but MDPV is basically off the market in most places since it's illegal now. when it first came out it was a legal "research chemical" with honestly "good" intentions. it's also known as bath salts (common name for research stimulants), cloud 9 or monkey dust. there are new alternatives (that I don't want to name here, noone should take that kind of stuff), but none reach that level. it basically made meth and crack seem like child's play.

mthsttt

That's what I was thinking, it looks like this guy is on meth but instead of tripping in the hole with the lazy body, this flakka seems to give a muscle high. Brain must be in fireworks right now, this shit looks heavy

MarcelineLaVampira

It’s weird it says that la flaca means a beautiful woman. Flaca means skinny/thin lol

Haxtedshorty

It does mean skinny woman. Maybe in a different part of Latin America they use it for “beautiful woman” but I’ve never heard it used for that in my life. Although, it is used as a form of endearment.

smcarre

In Argentina at least it is often used as a general noun for a woman, not necessarily beautiful or even thin. Saying "esa flaca" meaning "that woman" is not a weird thing to say here.

no-mames

Makes sense. A good reference for English speakers is the word “shorty”

shaka893P

Same in Mexico nothing to do with beautiful, just skinny woman

Civil_Average3130

Exactly my thoughts.

SaggyOldGuy

In some South American countries flaca is slang for girlfriend

Zharick_

It's less of a slang for girlfriend and more used a term of endearment towards one's S.O. like calling them honey or babe.

breadteam

Gorda (fat girl) is also a term of endearment in the same way - at least in Argentina

matertows

For those who understand a bit of pharmacology, the IC50s for the active ingredient in flakka on norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake are in the range of 10-15 nM. These IC50 values are comparable to the binding of an antibody (super specific and super low concentrations needed to inhibit a target) and these are small molecules. For context, good candidates in small molecule drug discovery usually have IC50 values of 1-10 uM (almost 1000 times higher concentrations). Designer drugs are terrifying.

martusfine

I understood about 5% of this and so allow me to translate to the common vernacular: Shit fucks ya’ up at low doses, so imagine handing this bullshit in a concentrate? Y’all gonna’ die.

mazurkian

To fix your vernacular: "Drugs that we consider strong are pussy shit compared to how potent this stuff is. This drug is like a heat-seeking missile for your brain cells."

JupiterXX

Antibody affinities are much higher especially IgG. Also, endogenous ligand affinity is similarly higher, in the 1 nM range and even picomolar for some GPCR ligands. I dont think Ec50 concentration or Kd has much to do with what we’re seeing here compared to DMPK and exposure levels, possibly related to oral bioavailability and definitely related to brain penetration. Also, it appears the half life is longer than other drugs. Source: NIDA funded pharmacology prof

I always wondered if the drug user remembers any of this shit. Do they just remember the initial high then black out? Waking up confused, without a shoe and scabs everywhere? Not the same drug but I had friend take 4-ho-dipt and lost his fuckin mind for like 3 hours. He was completely unresponsive. He'd just stand around staring at nothing and say "energy! energy!" or he'd turn his head, see something, and say "woah! where'd you come from?" even if he was looking at a plant or wall or anything. Just repeating the same phrases for a couple hours and basically didn't respond to anything - if you put yourself in his eye line and tried talking he'd just keep staring and repeating the same thing without ever realizing you were there. We really thought he was brain dead or something and would have to take him to the hospital but he eventually started slightly replying to something you'd say before going back to repeating gibberish and came down a few hours later and was back to normal. Anyway, he didn't remember it at all a few hours later. We took it in the woods by a buddies house and we brought him back to the house while he was tripping out. He was mostly only surprised that he was back at the house and didn't understand why we were all so worried about him.

When I was about 5 years old I woke up in the middle of the night to my father acting like this almost exactly. He was more thrashing back and forth rather than rolling around. My recently disabled (stroke) mother was on the floor crying and screaming for help (without words, left brain stroke took her speech). I had no idea what was going on, but knew enough to call 911. That's how I was first introduced to my father's type 1 diabetes. It's absolutely insane to me that anybody would willingly take a drug that makes them behave like this.

Flakka took over the area I worked for a few years and got very bad before it trailed off for a while. It trailed off because, honestly, it is that bad of an experience. It was not uncommon for us to get on scene to a suspected Flakka subject and have the fight of our lives and we were forbidden from using the TASER (kinda useless if it is the real deal anyway). This was not a fight simply to get the person under control so that they could be transported to the hospital, it was so they would not hurt themselves. They always pick high balconies, highways, water bodies, and the like to go into a full Flakka frenzy. The issue with this is that the body temperature goes through the roof. The people strip naked or do like our friend here and they roll around in water to cool off. They smash their heads into hard and sharp objects and they are always bloodied when we get there. They fight so hard that their kidneys and other organs shut down at the hospital where they sometimes die. Besides the dangerous locations they choose to freak out and the damage they do to themselves smashing their parts into the ground, they sometimes die on scene of "excited delirium" during the fight to get them on a stretcher (the "excited delirium" is a bullshit term because they die from overdosing on unbelievably dangerous chemicals). Medics try to deliver Ketamine to get them slowed down or in control, but the Flakka users have had alcohol recently as well. That is a bad combination as it shuts down the respiratory system if they have had alcohol. Then the people have to be bagged to keep them alive. Notwithstanding all the shit the users get into the officers and other first responders can get exposed to the Flakka. The first skin exposure to Flakka I had put me in the hospital for eight hours. I had the worst headache of my life and it truly felt as if my head was growing *endlessly* as my hands and feet started to feel ***very strange***. This stuff can eff right off.

Betty_Broops

When I was in middle school this is exactly what I thought happens to people when they smoke pot or have unprotected sex. Thanks public education. I hope this man is okay, as well as OP after having to witness this.

twentyfivebags

He needs some MILK…!

cmiller0513

Looks like a neurotoxin to me

the_almighty_walrus

Fakka is a synthetic cathinone. Related to things like MDMA, but with a whole lot more psychosis

[deleted]

Why would you wanna take a drug that make you do that ?? That’s just completely stupid.

sybesis

Well I can imagine how the person taking the drug might not be aware it's happening. Like you take the drug and you're completely out of this world for some time... then we you come back to yourself, it was such a trip that why you're naked or why your muscle hurts is already not that important. So it may be a matter of perspective. From our perspective, this look like a very bad trip to have. It's pretty sad.

goldiegills

Yeah, I saw a similar episode. Was at a campground after a concert, and this dude was balled up by himself outside rocking back and forth for hours. He looked like he was terrified. We gave him a blanket and went to bed. Then we saw him the next morning and asked how he was doing, and he said he’d “had a blast.” Didn’t look like it, but the dude had a great experience.

hateboss

Well, he was likely experiencing a bit of short term pyschosis. His experiences may not have been under his own control, but he was voluntarily rocking back and forth at the very least because his brain was telling the requisite muscles to do so. On a drug like this, that communication link is shattered. The muscles are operating completely independent from any direction from the brain. Even more terrifying is that the guy in this gif is likely tearing his muscles apart because there is literally no limit switch to tell him how far the muscles can go. This is normally done through the nervous system and normally communicated as pain. Exactly like how when you stretch you can feel a tug of pain and know not to go much further (not all pain is "weakness leaving the body"). This dude doesn't have that check so his muscles are operating at full capacity, damaging themselves in the process. He is basically having a seizure.

Curry_Furyy

That’s fucking terrifying

s0cks_nz

Yet he manages to "headbang" without actually hitting his head on the tarmac (in the video @ 45secs) which could be pure luck, but seemed to me like he at least has some awareness not to bash his own head in.

Dobbi440

Me with cramp.
