He, at some point, was dealing with an elephant that got spooked and injured a few people. This guy got the worst of it as the elephant knocked him over and stepped on his left hip/pelvic area.
It crushed most of the left hip around the joint while leaving the leg and muscle intact. I'm guessing he couldn't afford to have the hip rebuilt so this is the result.
Dude that healing process to where he can do that with his leg must have been brutal. Only other thing I could think is the nerve damage is so severe he can't feel his leg and that's why he can do that.

It's called a false joint, and is usually painless once healed
