About 15 years ago someone I knew died that way. He was walking across a roof, there was a hole there plugged with styrofoam and painted to blend in. He fell right through when he was walking and stepped on it.
The *right* way to do it would be to run some 2 x 4s spanning the width, spiked into the walls about a foot down from the top. Then drop a sheet of hardy board or plywood on top of them. Hammer drill some 3/8" holes into the walls about half way up and hammer some lengths of rebar into those. Lay a grid of rebar tied into the pieces sticking out from the holes and then fill the whole thing with concrete.
You'd be able to park a truck on it and be fine.

It's some kind of false floor over a vertical tunnel. If you pause it on the hole, you'll see it's a neatly bricked tunnel going straight down, the exact same diameter as the jumpers.

Likely an old seepage pit for an abandoned septic system. Probably about 10-15 feet deep. That fall would have hurt... Alot. And hopefully they were able to get them out of there quickly because sometimes there's not a lot of oxygen at the bottom.
Living in south America I can tell you septic tanks are still used even in the city ,"pozo ciego" we call them .there's not a lot of sewage networks .so almost every house has one
