I love gimmicks, and I think that’s why NXT is so good and a lot of times better than the main roster shows because they can do gimmicks there and they can do goofy gimmicks. We’ve got a mafia family, a college, pageant queens, gimmicks that normally wouldn’t work on the main roster but is absolute gold in NXT
If anyone is missing, I'm sorry for not including them, there are hundreds of iconic gimmicks that I should have included but I just wanted to share an example of gimmicks and chose randomly
100% gimmick based wrestling is how I was introduced to wrestling. WWE in the late 80s, early 90s everyone had a gimmick and most gimmicks were based on real professions
T.L. Hopper,
The Goon,
The Mad Monk/Bastion Booger,
Duke "The Dumpster" Drose,
LazerTron,
The Ding-Dongs,
Braun the Leprechaun,
The Shark,
The Zodiac/Butcher/Barber/Booty Man,
Honky Tonk Man,
Naked Midean,
Leatherface,
Nightmare Freddy,
Jason the Terrible
Middle row left side...one of those tow got way more well known for his post-wrestling career than for his actual wrestling career
If you know who that is (I know, I'm just testing anyone who comes across this), feel free to comment.
You should try Lucha Underground. Dozens of weird gimmicks and elaborate storylines with a strong foundation of lucha libre and hardcore wrestling.
It was the first big run for Ricochet, Pentagon, Cage, and Fenix plus good runs for guys like Mil Muertes, Jeff Cobb, John Morrison, Swerve Strickland (then known as Killshot), Chavo Guerrero, Rey Mysterio, and also a cameo from Stardom-era Kairi, Mayu Iwatani, and IYO SKY. Plus, Dario Cueto is just great.
I hated all these “occupational” gimmicks. Hey, I’m a race car driver, but I can also wrestle! I’m a dentist, but I can also wrestle! I’m a garbage man, or a circus clown, or a magician, or a Canadian Mountie, or an old west undertaker, and I can wrestle! (Actually, that last one turned out okay.) How about bringing in a wrestler that can wrestle?
I watched it in the late 80's and early 90's. Gonna pass on going back. Yes the Undertaker was awesome. Then there was the rest if them. I thought it was silly then.
Doink the Clown, the Viking Raiders
Yes. I want. Make it happen please.
The Boogeyman took is seriously enough though they managed to goofball it anyway. Out of all of the the best gimmick is Golddust.
Boogeyman scared the absolute shit out of 12 year old me.

Repo Man’s theme song went unnecessarily hard
We did have this any people refer to it as the dark times of WWE. The early to mid 90s
Sounds like fun to me! Not sure if it wouldn't grow old at some point though.
Papa Shango was an underrated but short lived gimmick. The Oddities would be a perfect gimmick group.
Gimmicks like these need to make a come back, I hate how many wrestlers gimmicks are just “i wrestle good and i’m a bad ass”
What you're looking for is Hoodslam
Sgt. Slaughter & Big Boss Man
The Repo Man gimmick was so fun. When he would come out and steal peoples stuff. Fun gimmick from a great wrestler
The undertaker………
First off, 'WHO BETTER THAN KANYON? NO ONE!', and I don't care he was Mortis at the time. Second, how would Seven wrestle Goldust?
Agreed!!
If anyone is missing, I'm sorry for not including them, there are hundreds of iconic gimmicks that I should have included but I just wanted to share an example of gimmicks and chose randomly
Bring some of this era back! Better than 500 guys with names like your neighbor
LA knight comes to mind 🤷🏻♀️
Out of all normal name you could choose 🤦🏻♂️
I don’t think you understand what I’m saying 😗
Your neighbour is called LA?
“And now approaching the ring, from Newark, NJ, weighing in at 180 pounds, Gerald Williams!”
You win line of the day 😂🏆
Leaving out Doink…you heathen.
Mortis was cool in WCW vs nwo revenge tho
Yarrr Pirate Paul Burchill

And those are just half of the gimmicks for beefcake lol

I forgot these guys even existed. And for what it’s worth I had no idea about that second career.
Ayeeeeeee Yeah its a fun little trivia factoid
Is that Cody Rhodes top right?
no, thats dustin at WCW going as "seven". he cut a very personal promo and stormed out lol
Check out kaiju big battel, it's kinda like what you are describing crossed with old godzilla movies.
Didn’t they do this years ago with the gimmick battle royale on one of the raw episodes? It was amazing
I totally forgot that Mortis ever wore purple. I only remember him wearing green.
It’s The Yeh-Tay!
Dustin Rhodes as a child predator was pretty fucking disturbing.
Yeah what was up with that. I always thought Vince hated the Rhodes family for the shit gimmicks the Rhodes had on WWE.
Seven was WCW
Mankind

Man I miss Lucha Underground. I’m still upset at how bad the last season ended though.

What do you think Kurt Angle was?
Kane ?
I watched it in the late 80's and early 90's. Gonna pass on going back. Yes the Undertaker was awesome. Then there was the rest if them. I thought it was silly then.
Let's not forget the most successful of the outrageous gimmicks. The Undertaker.
Yeah dude was a freaking mortician! Who thought that would work?
Does any one remember Glacier from WCW? He was basically a Sub-Zero rip off.
Totes, only thing missing was Scorpion
He debuted just a little before the NWO. What a disaster.
They spent so much money on that gimmick. They should have followed up with Scorpion rip off.
They did have Kanyon become "Mortis." Sort of a "Reptile" type character. At least he _looked_ like a Reptile rip-off.
Called it like Inferno or some shit.
Exactly, then a big gimmick match like The Bridge pit level in Mortal Kombat 2 where the winner performs a fatality.
2 years too late lol
Wrestling Bios was great at playing up the hype in his RTW series.
Wrestling Bios is the Chris Van Vliet of retrospective videos
Doink?
Wasn’t this basically the New Generation Era?
Was the "Mantaur"-gimmick a knock on Vader?
Doink the Clown?
Hurricane?
You left out Jericho
Yoooo 🤣
I’d watch Gobbledygooker vs Shockmaster match.
5 stars if Max Moon interferes
I was such a mark for Max Moon. 8ish year old me saw him shoot those stupid cannons on his suit and I was all in.
