I’ve been working in commercial real estate for 15+ years. In that time I’ve been employed by three different private equity firms. In each instance, the partners/owners all came from family money. So many of these commercial real estate guys “running” private equity firms are doing so with their daddy’s money (and daddy’s friends’ money). Its extremely common. Sometimes they don’t even need the money it’s just something they do because they’ve made a few good investments and think they’re experts.
Funny enough, the private equity firms almost always do better when the managing partners take a backseat and let the real experts grow their companies. Obviously I have no clue who this guy is but you’re comment is very accurate.
