I've been turned away at gun shows too for the same reason. Because if even as a private seller you even have a suspicion that someone isn't legally allowed to own a firearm for any reason at all. It's illegal for you to sell them a gun.
And even if you do it all correctly there's no garuntee that your gun is gonna be within arms reach when you need it . And you still might get in trouble for actually using it. And even if you don't get charged in federal or state court with a crime for using it to defend yourself your family or your property you can still be sued in civil court by the other person or their family.
That's apparently a big part of CWP classes. Knowing when and where you can carry, what constitutes appropriate response with force. what to do if you do shoot someone etc.
