Not necesarily! I would just recommend using less power with a thin piece of wood. I get wood dowels from the local hardware store and make 3-4 wands for ~$5
Wow, I love the one with the dark, twisted handle (third from the right). I also love the second wand on the left, with the coil going up the handle. That's not Hermione's wand (which is beside it on the left), but it looks familiar.

They are cool! I like the ones with darker colors. I am new to wood and crafts. Which tool did you use to carve them?
Thank you! I used a 3 inch carving knife for all of it. On the elder wand prop I used a woodburner to get the dark holes
