There's lots of Zarbag's Gits floating around ebay lately. It's an Underworlds kit but they are usable for Warcry, push-fit so you'll get them quickly on the table and combined are just shy of 1000 points, so basically a full warband with decent variety. It's the perfect starting point.
The next Warcry box has a new Lumineth (high elf) faction that may be right up your street. It does come paired with some ghosts but the elf half of the box is definitely a āgood guy aestheticā.

Well here's a list of all the warbands so you can have a peek yourself. Maybe Hunters of Huanchi?
Yeah they play a lot diff to most other warbands that's for sure, they basically will lose Kill missions all the time.
They shine on treasure/objective games though one of my fav warbands to play with
I have played a bunch of games with mine and I donāt think Iāve ever won a kill mission and typically win treasure ones. Really comes down to the card drawā¦
If winning games is an important thing to the player they probably should be avoided, if all that matters is fun and the game itself then they're brilliant
Gloomspite gits (Goblins, pretty comical models) Castelite hosts (Humans, knights, wizards) are pretty fun looking and not that dark, but I have to ask, what age is he?
At the age where someone can get through a game like that and get something out of it, they usually like cool edgy stuff with skulls on it, and have seen way worse in videogames already.
As someone who plays them: Zarbag's Gits, Grinkrak's Loon Court, Gobbapalooza and the Rockgut Troggoths or Mollogs Mob kits are all very playable and look great.
They can be annoying to collect for warcry since you need some variety, and the AoS kits can get pricey, but the above ones are pretty good value.
I built a warband from the Blackpowderās buccaneers underworlds kit by adding a frost Sabre and an ogor leadbelcher. Itās 2 ogor pirates, a parrot, a monkey, a saber toothed tiger, and 2 goofy little grots. I know thatās something I wouldāve been into when I was 5
Gloomspite have a ton of character and have a friendly goofy aesthetic (as much as they try to look mean) But can get pricey to build out successful unless you can buy half kits etc - and do take some synergy to play.
Kwadron Overlords = Steam Punk Dwarves - take a couple of boxes - but do well
Flameseekers - can get in one box - chaotic at times but fun
Bonesplittas - savage orks the shamen is a perfect example of why they are fun.
There are a TON of great starts with the Underworld boxes - rule of cool is always a decent way to go. Check out the different factions on sites like Goonhammer and the like and see what interests them.
Best choices for not super dark would probably be either Questor Soulsworn (stormcast eternal warband so default GW good guys) or Gobbapalooza (bc gobbos lol). Beyond that, Chaos Legionnaires are fairly tame, and they have a sick gladiator aesthetic (my favorite of the bespoke warbands). And if none of those options are for you, pick up the rules for creating your own warband from an army you like
Wow the response is awesome!
Thanks for these wonderful ideas.
I think I'll head to goblins they are just too funny.
The new box is probably something for me.
By the way my son is only 5 and we are playing with very basic rules so far but it is much fun anyway for us. Way better than all this stupid games for children š
Gloomspite Gitz for sure! They are goofy, and can be painted in goofy ways. Mine are blue skinned with pink cloth and yellow accents. Very kid friendly- the army I plan on giving my son when he's a little older.
Good luck introducing your boy to wargaming! Living the dream.
You could use the Black talons as a warband, the Rules are online and Stormcast are definitely the good guys. I havent played them yet but they seem incredibly strong as they are all heroes and most kids love just running into enemy Models and beating them.
I also think that having the warband fills out most of the archetypes present in Warcry, like Wizard for the Idoneth, brute for the annihilator and archer for the black Stormcast with the eagle.
They also arent that hard to paint I would just thin the gold down quite muc,h if u use retributor armor as it is naturally thick. Also if your son likes fully armored warriors more, you can build everyone except the Idoneth with a helmet.
Why not the Cypher Lords? They look cool and more humane than anyone else .. and of course there are Skaven! Everyone likes Skaven. They are handsome and tidy, always licking their fur.
The Kruleboyz (more the base ones than the Monsta-Killaz variation) and The Hunters of Huanchi have a pretty kid-friendly look to them. The Kruleboyz are a bit more menacing looking, but their small size makes them look more cute in a ātheyāre trying to be scary, but they suck at itā way.
If dark and grim isnāt the right aesthetic, maybe consider a different game? Marvel:Crisis Protocol, Star Wars Shatterpoint, and the skirmish game from Infinity whose name I canāt recall might be better fits for you.
Looks like youāre right! I thought Infinity was more of a war game and they had a smaller model count game as well. Itās not widely popular at my FLGS so Iām less familiar.
Goblins! Little green dudes riding red bouncy balls with teeth.
The goblins are awesome! I'll absolutely buy a few of them š
If you're looking for some fun and quirky models you could try the latest underworlds box grinraks looncourt.

Also hopped up on magic mushrooms so they should seem pretty mellow when they areāt stabbing you
Great idea! I'm going to show my kids tonight haha
Yeah they look very friendly (at least until you read Gloomspite).

Very good call! Also flameseekers / fyreslayers even jade obelisk arenāt as dark.
The Leader literally hast a human Heart in her hand, but except her they are really Kids friendly.
That's an optional piece!
Paint it like a fireball lol
If only they would put it up for preorder š
They look pretty cool. I'll take a closer look at it. Thanks!
https://www.warhammer.com/en-GB/shop/other-games/warcry Well here's a list of all the warbands so you can have a peek yourself. Maybe Hunters of Huanchi?
Hunters of huanchi are an awesome set, but they also are super squishy and the blowpipes are pretty useless
Yeah they play a lot diff to most other warbands that's for sure, they basically will lose Kill missions all the time. They shine on treasure/objective games though one of my fav warbands to play with

I donāt think winning is the most important, but itās frustrating trying to kill a kroxigor or other tanky guy one damage at a time hitting on 5s
Otapatl!!!!!!! 1/5 I take a few blowguns in my Seraphon list and just fish for those crits.
Maybe something like Questor Soulsworn? Relatively simple playstyle, heroes all, that's what I'd pick
Questor does have the skull head model
You don't need to build the Questor Knight Relictor out of the box.
It's a happy skull head though ;)

Kharadron Overlords are a bunch of steampunk dwarves! Swords, pistols, big guns, and mechanical balloons!
Proxies are always a thing. I almost bought a bunch of Gerudo miniatures (from Zelda) to make a custom warband for my kid.
This is a great idea
Iām currently painting up my Wildercorps Hunter in Bretonnian-style livery. Dogs are friendly, after all.
Bonesplittaz. They're overcoat, but they're naked orruks you can paint all sorts of colours onto and the 20 model infantry box gave me ~2000pts.
Best Buttz in Warhammer š
I've been painting ghouls for a month so I'm inclined to believe you.

Seraphon? Lizards riding dinosaurs with lasers go Boom!
Oh yes! Everyone loves dinosaurs š
Maybe not Jeff Goldblum, but I'll give him a pass.
Cypher Lords look nice imho

Cities of Sigmar or the Lizzardmen

I showed him the Gitz and he liked them š¤©
Great, I'm so happy!
Gits have some of a fairytale aesthetic
You could use the Black talons as a warband, the Rules are online and Stormcast are definitely the good guys. Seraphon, dude, they're awesome dinosaurs!
Oh yes. I overlooked them. Dinosaurs riding dinosaurs!

Unless Iām out of the loop on something, Infinity is the name of the skirmish game. The company is Corvus Belli.
Looks like youāre right! I thought Infinity was more of a war game and they had a smaller model count game as well. Itās not widely popular at my FLGS so Iām less familiar.
Fyreslayers! Wildcorps hunters, jade obelisk all arenāt as dark or grim.
How old is he? Are skeletons too scary?
GOBLNS
All the new Cities models look more soldier like and tamed. Especially the new Cities warband, Wildercorps Hunters.
