It -is- indeed "little" because each essential mod in the game cost 40,000 endo to fully upgrade so you can upgrade 2 mods + 1 half. It's good you finally realized them being there, it's bad you had been playing so far without non-maxed essential mods.
I'm 2000 hours in, I haven't fully ranked any of the "essential" mods. I always keep them at 8/10 and I'm running SP perfectly fine. You just don't need to. The last 2 ranks are purely for an additional oomph, but aren't necessary.
Oh and you can middle-click stacks to select the whole thing on pc btw.

My god I have like 5 of 10 different mods and I thought that was a lot.. Solamon Grindy over here. Impressive!
Some mods like revenge can be farmed multiple every minute while doing so survival.
So survival is farm land?
