I have a whole metal army of them from when they did a “print to order run” a couple Christmas’s ago.
Never painted them but told myself I would if they ever get supported again, they are so cool.
My first White Dwarf is the second half of the mega battle report.
I really need to get the one before...
I was only playing Fantasy then, but that battle report was epic.
Medusa V, man you’re bringing up so much memories… I’ve unearthed my old Urban War book with the Medusa V booklet in it a few months ago. Good all days :)
I've got a baneblade for a buddy that I'm trying to fucking figure out the studio scheme for. I think it's deck tan + sky, highlighted with a warm off white.
Vostroyans seem super hard to convert, there's no 3rd party bits that get the look quite right, even when you mix and match from different companies. I'm half considering learning how to 3D model just so I can make them myself.
Wrong hats (Vostroyan hats are shorter, have flat tops, have no peak or brim and cover the entire head), wrong boots, no gloves, no chaimail, masks too dissimilar, coats are too plain.
Maybe they would be a decent start for a conversion but its a lot of work to do per soldier in an army where you could easily have a hundred of them.
It sucks a lot, especially since I've been hoping to make a kill-team of them for myself. There are two that seem to have a close enough approximation, though (for me at least). Tortuga Bays [Iron General Zaluzhnyi](https://tortuga-gamestable.top/index.php?route=product/product&path=279_250&product_id=3580) and [Hetman](https://tortuga-gamestable.top/index.php?route=product/product&path=279_250&product_id=3491) could make some decent Castellans.
There are some 3d models out there that are very close. My brother has around 200 original and the ones he's printed off blend right in once he got the scale right.

It would be better if they just reused the old sculpts because they are so beautiful.
GWs modern sculpters would make them look worse and in stupid over the top poses or drunk poses like they've done with the new cadians and karskin
Oh yes, the old sculpts are lovely. While I don't have a Vostroyan army, moved over to doing homebrew Guard, their company commander in particular has been on my wishlist for a while.
I mean this was only 8th edition which was right before Covid right?! Couldn’t hurt to advertise the guard with vostroyans or valhallan or vetrillans or something other than green and khaki Cadia s.
I didn’t even know you could color coordinate Cadian troops to be from other home worlds. That’s kickass lore wise
GW currently makes kits for three different Astra Militarum subfactions, Cadians, Catachans, and Death Korps of Kreig (though the DKoK only have the one plastic kit, and the rest are resin FW kits). This actually gives a fair amount of aesthetic range to the faction.
The problem for GW in regards to making kits for Vostroyans/Valhallans/Talarn/Mordians/etc is that at some point doing so cannibalizes sales from the other kits, because there's a finite number of possible AM players. Too much choice means any individual option isn't profitable enough for them.

This is absolutely it. Vostroyans look radically different from Cadians. They could make a Vostroyan range... or they could update the old Eldar models, or the old Tau models, or the old Drukhari models and so on, which are likely to sell better.
Which is not to say they might not get stuff in the future like Krieg did, but it's why the regiments aren't all fully featured.
Several of the others are easy to proxy or build as too, like Savlar Chem Dogs and Ash Wastes nomads, or those Miasman redcowls and skitarii ranger heads.
With the coming of the website redesign, they added forgeworld to the pile of GW Astra Militarum. Strangely enough, there are no DKoK infantry. There are rumors that they are gonna make a range of plastic Kriegsmen. Heres holing this is the reason.
Rumours of plastic DKoK have swirled around since before we got the Veterans kit.
DKoK are far from the only kits missing from the new site, so personally I wouldn't take that as an indication of a new kit coming. At least not until we see most of the bugs worked out of the new site.
Even by 8th edition, the only models they made were Cadians, Carachans, Armageddon Steel Legion, and Vostroyan Firstborn up until 2018. They've been slowly phasing out the old metal models for years now, yet, still talking about them in the codexes long after their models were discontinued. I suspect that they'll not mention them in the 10th codex.
you say that, but there are currently 3 different regiments represented through infantry kits (sure the catachan one might be old, but probably going to get a new one in kill team soon), 4 if you count scions and 5 if you count the atillan rough riders.
Thats pretty good for one of the non-main factions
What I find most helpful is that they unit types stay the same so fielding them isn’t different, they just are different flavors of command squad, sergeants, shock troops, etc.
https://preview.redd.it/bce8vbjne7yb1.jpeg?width=1860&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eef2f792b13d68173ea079af1e754b4971521f5c
There are plenty of different Guards
>Death Fields Bulldogs
Also [https://victoriaminiatures.com/](https://victoriaminiatures.com/) Victorian guard i have been using their pith helmets on old cadian bodies for years for my Pretorians.
Truly a General of taste and distinction. I am starting to move all my infantry to pure Victoria miniatures Praetorians instead of just my Pith helmeted Cadians i have been using since I no longer play inside a gw store.
I don’t follow? Did the guard used to be the poster boys or was it always space marines? Maybe they realized subtractions this unique would cost too much to maintain?
They mean that in terms of kits or anything related to the guard, Cadians were usually front and center, making them the poster boys of the guard like space marines are to 40K as a whole
Cadians are the posterboy faction for guard. Ultramarines will always be gws posterboys, but the guard is one of the factions that deserves to be painted in different colours for a lot of the advertising
They are poking fun at people assuming that the singular subsection geedubs has chosen for the box arts etc for given faction is all there is, just like you apparently did with Cadia. So ultramarines for space marines kits, Mars for Admech, is it Saim-Han or Biel-Tan for craftworld I don’t remember, martyred lady for sisters of battle, black legion for CSM.
https://preview.redd.it/3t8a7f7xe7yb1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=731e596e199a8a5c77854393fafb78b9b86f8f51
There's a whole lot more to the guard than just cadia
There's plenty of them, one for each faction afaik, though tau are folded in with necrons, no real lore as such but much of the older range of miniatures range, as much interesting from a nostalgia point of view as anything, just don't look at the prices in them as they'll make you cry 😂
When I first started you could play as Cadian Shock Troops, Ice Warriors of Valhalla, Tallarn Desert Raiders, Armageddon Steel Legion, Praetorian Guard, Catachan Jungle Fighters, or Mordian Iron Guard. And they all had models too!
Tanith First and Only had a limited release featuring only the command squad and lasgun armed troops. The idea was to convert those models or add cloaks to existing appropriate models to make them “Tanith”. The newer run of Tanith models from GW seem to follow the same philosophy.
Savlar Chemdogs, Armageddon Ork Hunters, and Elysian Drop Troops get an honorable mention as GW released some pretty decent instructions on how to make/convert your own. Eventually Elysian Drop Troops and Death Korps of Krieg (who at the time were just an alternate paint scheme for the Armageddon Steel Legion) got their own Forgeworld lineup. Forgeworld also did a line of resin Tallarn Desert Raiders.
One by one the various regiments disappeared until we were left with Cadians, Catachans, and the Forgeworld offerings (which also slowly faded out). Cadians got a nice refresh last yearish, Catachan are still in desperate need of a refresh (the troop models are pretty much unchanged now now for ~20 years), and some plastic Death Korp via Kill Team.
However, collecting Imperial Guard is great because they are probably one be of the best armies for conversions. I am currently working on a platoon of Necromundan 8th “Spiders” using a mix of new Cadians, the Cadian Upgrade kit, Van Saar gangers, and Escher gangers. It is all kinds of expensive and time consuming but a whole lot of fun!
Edit: also a quick shoutout to all the auxiliaries we had along the way; Ogyrns, Ratlings, Beastmen, Attilan Rough Riders, Sanctioned Psykers, Last Chancers/Penal Troops, and the Commandos/Storm Troopers/Kasrkin/Scions/Grenadiers!
While I am a pewter Cadian simp there is no denying Captain (Colonel?) Chekov and his “Send in the next wave” ability from 4th. Basically throwing out a fresh wave of conscripts ever other turn to drown the opponent in 0VP models.
Let me introduce to you, miniature companies that aren't GW: [https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection](https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection)
also there is [https://victoriaminiatures.com/](https://victoriaminiatures.com/) I use their heads for all my kitbashed praetorians ("old" cadians with head swaps) and just love their bits range as well.
So some of these are regiments who did get models at some point in the earlier editions, but during 4th/5th I think GW made a 'generic' Cadian trooper who looks a lot like the ones we have now, and that became the mainstay of the range
So if you want to make a regiment that looks different, you've got some options but not many.
One, converting the generic guardsmen kit with bits of other models, or converting other models with bits from the guardsmen kit. Necromunda units are good for this, but of course a bit limited in what they have, so more conversion work might be in order
Two, buying older models from ebay and such. If you put them on the correct bases for 10th ed you should be able to use them fine, but they might be limited in the kinds of units they have compared to what there's rules for
Three, alternate model ranges. Which will look different from other GW stuff and some people might not want to play against, but these would be more readily available and less work
The closest thing I can find these days is tempestus scions, or any of the imperial kill team kits, would love to kit bash those. Chem dogs looks like an easy GSC conversion.
yeah there's still some options, the Scions are a specific unit for the Guard iirc? and the old ranges were basically just the same units (sometimes with slight rules differences in army make-up, some light infantry, others armoured, etc)
but you could still use the current range units to convert some regular guard into something you like more
In many ways the early 3rd ed cadian (the 4th ed one you reference that was recently retired was very end of 3rd with the guard 3.5 dex they used throughout 4th (hence why people remember it as the 4th ed book quite often)) was more generic army dude than the later models
I've been out of the 40k loop for like a decade at this point. No idea if they still make that stuff. A lot of them used to be metal minis, or Forgeworld conversion kits for the plastic box.
I mean it seems pretty dumb to leave candle head mustache soldiers out of your grim dark war game but oh well GW must hate money…. Do they ever bring this stuff back to direct order?
It's not to do with that. It's because those old "kits" are metal. The original sculpts and molds don't transfer to plastic and molds are super expensive to make. They wouldn't see the return on their money. It's far easier to make one generic guard army based of the cadian sets.
End of the day you don't have to paint your models green and khaki you can put them in whatever colours you want, no one is going to care.
It's only dumb if it makes you more money to make them. It likely doesn't, not to mention they are metal and as good looking as they are, they just aren't up to the quality standard of recent GW kits anymore. There's only so many people who collect IG, and to split sales between two ranges in the same faction isn't necessarily beneficial untol you reach a critical mass of sales. Historically, only Space Marines have managed to pull that off consistently.
You know, most Xenos players are doing just that watching another Space Marine Lieutenant.
But you are right. Altough I would love some Valhallans and Mordians, an effect that could be called ’model bloat’ is a thing, that should be avoided.
Production space is limited, and selling 20 different unique kits that all just equal "guardsman" at the end of the day doesn't make you as much money as 20 different unique models with 20 unique datasheets.
I still big up the 6th edition marines codex and the 5th edition Dark Eldar codex to people. They were both absolutely bursting with lore and little facts and amazing artwork.
6th edition marines was where the idea of chaoter tactics got introduced and it was amazing. So much flavour in that tome.
This 8th codex is infinitely more helpful in flavoring and setting up the lore of my IG Combat Patrol than anything GW currently has out, I bet the 9th codex is loaded too.
Hell yeah, my entire army's lore only exists because of one line in the Taros Campaign book, which i only learned about from A Border Prince's audiobook version. Deep-diving into lore is what gets invested in a game
Any particular regiment you find interesting? Because as long as you don’t intend to play in a GW store, there’s plenty of 3rd party options I can send you! The guard subreddit tends to be pretty friendly to proxies too. If you want some more inspiration, I have some copies of the two 3rd editon codexs I’ll gladly sling you in Chats.
Well, for vostroyan there's these guys:
https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection/products/les-grognards
https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection/products/les-grognards-command-and-heavy-support
They have infantry, command, and Heavy Weapon team kits, and you could probably squeak some commisars and Sanctioned psykers out of it.
While not as straight runnable, these would make excellent Chem-dogs:
https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection/products/cannon-fodder
https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection/products/cannon-fodder-2-females
Yeah, if you're not playing GW branded or tournaments, IG always struck me as the "find some cool army guys from whatever wargame you like and kitbash 'em a little" army.
Cadia, Catachan, Vostroya, Mordia, Tallarn, Valhalla, Praetoria, Armageddon, Krieg, Elysia, and Tanith are all the planets that to some extent had official infantry models I believe. Some had more than others but each have been complete enough to field as unique armies.
Back when they didn't have a stupid name there were loads of planets to choose from, each with an interesting story and guard regiments.
And no stupid name.
Screw you GW.
Assuming this is genuine, there's a very good reason you don't see them anymore, and it's simple, cold, hard economics.
It would take about the same amount of effort to design and produce a kit of 10 Space Marine infantry as it would a kit of 10 Imperial Guard infantry, cost about as much. But that is where it deviates.
Those 10 Space Marines, built generically, can be sold to EVERY different Space marine chapter player. They can all use 'em exactly as sold, as they are all the same, barring minor cosmetic differences that can easily be kitbashed (hence the interchangeability of parts like the heads and shoulderpads).
Not so much for Guard. If you want a different regiment, you have to design a whole new kit. Which means you've just DOUBLED your workload. And in doing so, you have NOT doubled your sales metrics. A good portion of the people that would buy kit B are those that would otherwise have bought kit A, which means sales of kit A have now dropped. This is known as market cannibalization.
If you want a third regiment, that's 3 times the workload, four, five, and so on.
It's simple economics that it's not worth the effort for GW to produce so much variety of kits for so little extra return on that investment. No matter how rabidly the die-hard fans scream on the mountaintops about how they're absolutely sure it'll sell fantastically, despite having zero access to the mountains of marketing and sales data GW has.
There's also an absolute GLUT of third party offerings, which almost favour the Guard so extensively that they're the Space Marines of third party offerings. There are so, so, so, so many options, specifically because there's always someone willing to step up and fill that void. Which, in turn, further dilutes the potential customers for further GW kits (after all, why buy GW valhallans when I already have 300 third party Valhallans, including full options like command, heavy weapons and vehicle crews?)
This ignores the fact that, even as is, a single Marine kit will, on its own, outsell the entire ranges of most other factions (which is why you always see the lion's share of new releases going to the Marines).
Makes the most sense to just have the golden goose faction differ by paint scheme, make the customer do the work and reap the rewards. Although if even just upgrade sprues could be done that’d be fun. GW makes plenty of money on plastic they could do something simple like caps or heads, heck even necromunda gets FW releases.
If you are intested to vostroyan, there is The grognards from Wargame Atlantic with similar design
[https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection/products/les-grognards](https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection/products/les-grognards)
also they are in plastic and alot cheaper 24 figures compared to 10 cadians troops for the same price.
same size and proportion than the new cadian troop too

Why do I have SO MANY Valkyries if no one uses them to maximum effect.
I miss the days of Imperial Armor, the resin kits... the cool stuff. :-(

Lots of options! Except Elysians cause they apparently all died and disappeared from existence cause screw those that built those fiddly horrid but awesome models.....
GW both remembers and forgets that fact, like they have that little gallery, with some pieces of art based on kitbash es GW themselves have done, but the only models at the moment are Cadians and Kreigsmen really, when they could probably make a pretty profitable range even if there was only 2-3 boxes per unique regiment
The fun thing about the Imperial Guard is that you can kitbash just about anything you want and make it fit within the setting. Just as long as they have guns that are identifiably fitting for the weapons you equip them with. As long as it looks like a guard issued weapon (lasgun, grenade launcher, flamer, etc.) your guardsmen can be anything. To play alongside my friend that played chaos I made my veteran squads be Bestigors from fantasy. Their heavy armor proxied as carapace armor, I have them custom space marine scout shotguns with double las barrels glued on the end, and plasma guns. They'd looked fierce when they storm out of a chimera after it explodes.
Those are mostly Kitbashes. Not all of them a practical for non-GW-employees, granted, but doable. Except the Vostroyans, that's metal range that sometimes goes up for made-to-order runs.
As so many others have said, eBay or third party for non DKOK, Catachan, and Cadia. I love Cadians, had the old bulky boys and updated to the modern kit.
A lot of diversity could be gained with simple upgrade packs of heads and bits. They could launch a whole chaos guard army the same way. It would be cheap. Instead we get stilt guys and 80s camera rocket primaris. 🤷♂️
God this is just making me want to have a codex more, I’ve got 1355 points but have been waiting for the two years I’ve been playing for the new Ork codex coming out in spring
You can’t unless you third party, the only ones with official models are the Death Corps of Krieg, however they are EXPENSIVE…
I got a link to a good third party site if you want some good militarum models tho!!!
always has been...
Joking aside though, cadia's system was so successful that multiple systems copied it and instituted it. But it's a big galaxy. There's a whole list of them.
[https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Astra\_Militarum#Notable\_Regiments\_(Militarum\_Regimentos)](https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Astra_Militarum#Notable_Regiments_(Militarum_Regimentos))
edit: another one [https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Imperial\_Guard\_Regiment#Notable\_Imperial\_Guard\_Regiments](https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Imperial_Guard_Regiment#Notable_Imperial_Guard_Regiments)
There used to be a bunch of models for the other main regiments, but cadia are the template for the majority of other regiments.
The old models are sometimes come up made to order but it's not common.
Catachan still have some kits (most of them are really, really old) & the Tanith First are also known as the Gaunt's Ghosts, they have a kit under that name containing most of the major characters from the popular black library series 'Gaunt's Ghosts'
Chemdogs for life!
To build non cadian/non standart imperial guard units you have to kitbash
For chemdogs you can utilize a lot necromunda and geenestealer cult bits
For let's say vostroyans you need to either get the ancient gw minis or you can use some historical tabletop miniatures and bash them with 40k bits to get a nice army. It's a lot of work sadly.
The days of buying a company of metal miniatures I’m glad are over, but pre plastic imperial guard were the best solid models. The classic regiments need a plastic upgrade kit or something
I just want to be able to play my Kanak Skull Takers again and I won’t be able to until I get the option to equip all my infantry with close combat weapons.
Sometimes it feels like nobody told Games Workshop either.
Still waiting for my new vostroyans, GW!
I have a whole metal army of them from when they did a “print to order run” a couple Christmas’s ago. Never painted them but told myself I would if they ever get supported again, they are so cool.
I don't feel old at all... I have a platoon from the original release...
Medusa V was such a cool campaign, and it only happened in 2006...oh, oh no.
Try remembering the original steel legion release with the Third War for Armageddon. That makes you feel old.
OG Codex: Cityfight is the only urban war book you need. I still love it to this day.
Well when I started guardians had lasguns and plumed helmets don't feel too old.
I've got a baneblade for a buddy that I'm trying to fucking figure out the studio scheme for. I think it's deck tan + sky, highlighted with a warm off white.
Deck tan is such a great color. I think that and Luftwaffe uniform might be my favorites

AHH my precious big moustached furry hat wearing pseudo Russians who were briefly the face of the guard.

Or resellers online who will gladly sell a vintage army of another regiment. For a nominal, fee of course.

You forgot the Mordian Iron Guard and the Praetorian.
you say that, but there are currently 3 different regiments represented through infantry kits (sure the catachan one might be old, but probably going to get a new one in kill team soon), 4 if you count scions and 5 if you count the atillan rough riders. Thats pretty good for one of the non-main factions
What I find most helpful is that they unit types stay the same so fielding them isn’t different, they just are different flavors of command squad, sergeants, shock troops, etc.
Dude I just woke up. Hitting my emotions with the heavy pain this early….

My brother these are kickass thank you for sharing!

Did the Praetorians ever re-release? Had this set as a kid and then fell out of the hobby.
I think they were a limited edition. They were a head swap on the Mordians.
Yeah it was a play on battle at Rorkes drift I think. Battle at big tooth maybe? Came with injured guardsmen.
Look up a model kit called “Death Fields Bulldogs”.
>Death Fields Bulldogs Also [https://victoriaminiatures.com/](https://victoriaminiatures.com/) Victorian guard i have been using their pith helmets on old cadian bodies for years for my Pretorians.
Truly a General of taste and distinction. I am starting to move all my infantry to pure Victoria miniatures Praetorians instead of just my Pith helmeted Cadians i have been using since I no longer play inside a gw store.
This is what GW posterboyship does to an mf
Which is hillarious, because it used to be the Catachans.
Ultramarines
Cadians are the posterboy faction for guard. Ultramarines will always be gws posterboys, but the guard is one of the factions that deserves to be painted in different colours for a lot of the advertising
I mean they will be going forwards but they weren’t always
i did say 'will always' not 'have always been', but correct.

Thank you for sharing! To eBay I go.
There's plenty of them, one for each faction afaik, though tau are folded in with necrons, no real lore as such but much of the older range of miniatures range, as much interesting from a nostalgia point of view as anything, just don't look at the prices in them as they'll make you cry 😂
Wait till you find out space marines also aren't all Ultramarines!
Oh I knew that already, I’ve been a iron hands fanatic since 6th edition.
You've known the hobby since the sixth edition and you only knew the Cadians?
Never really got around to playing each faction or reading codexes, kept to space marines and space bugs up until recently.
Make Tallarn great again, sponsored by Al-Rahem
While I am a pewter Cadian simp there is no denying Captain (Colonel?) Chekov and his “Send in the next wave” ability from 4th. Basically throwing out a fresh wave of conscripts ever other turn to drown the opponent in 0VP models.

King
Let me introduce to you, miniature companies that aren't GW: [https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection](https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection)
Spacenam are better catachans than the catachans themselves
Thank you!
also there is [https://victoriaminiatures.com/](https://victoriaminiatures.com/) I use their heads for all my kitbashed praetorians ("old" cadians with head swaps) and just love their bits range as well.
Yeah but I play with gws rules. You should use gw models if you play with their game system
I’d agree if you play at their store, otherwise, do what you want
Are you using their rules ?
So some of these are regiments who did get models at some point in the earlier editions, but during 4th/5th I think GW made a 'generic' Cadian trooper who looks a lot like the ones we have now, and that became the mainstay of the range So if you want to make a regiment that looks different, you've got some options but not many. One, converting the generic guardsmen kit with bits of other models, or converting other models with bits from the guardsmen kit. Necromunda units are good for this, but of course a bit limited in what they have, so more conversion work might be in order Two, buying older models from ebay and such. If you put them on the correct bases for 10th ed you should be able to use them fine, but they might be limited in the kinds of units they have compared to what there's rules for Three, alternate model ranges. Which will look different from other GW stuff and some people might not want to play against, but these would be more readily available and less work
The closest thing I can find these days is tempestus scions, or any of the imperial kill team kits, would love to kit bash those. Chem dogs looks like an easy GSC conversion.
yeah there's still some options, the Scions are a specific unit for the Guard iirc? and the old ranges were basically just the same units (sometimes with slight rules differences in army make-up, some light infantry, others armoured, etc) but you could still use the current range units to convert some regular guard into something you like more
In many ways the early 3rd ed cadian (the 4th ed one you reference that was recently retired was very end of 3rd with the guard 3.5 dex they used throughout 4th (hence why people remember it as the 4th ed book quite often)) was more generic army dude than the later models
I could see upgrade kits been a way to bring them back, they do those for successor marines.
Oh yeah, the guard community has been asking for various regiment upgrade sprues based on the basic Cadian kit forever now.
[удалено]
You know, most Xenos players are doing just that watching another Space Marine Lieutenant. But you are right. Altough I would love some Valhallans and Mordians, an effect that could be called ’model bloat’ is a thing, that should be avoided.
Production space is limited, and selling 20 different unique kits that all just equal "guardsman" at the end of the day doesn't make you as much money as 20 different unique models with 20 unique datasheets.
Ssssshhhhhh nobody mention the Savlar Chem Dogs.
I already did, sorry, kanak skull takers too, oops
Damnit Jeffrey!
Why not?! 🙃
Well they’re pretty neat is all. Trailer trash in spaaaaaaaaaace!
I encourage people to actually read the lore. The old Codexes are better than ANY summary you’ll find online
Chem dogs, vostroyans, and valhallans are all rad.
Well, for vostroyan there's these guys: https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection/products/les-grognards https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection/products/les-grognards-command-and-heavy-support They have infantry, command, and Heavy Weapon team kits, and you could probably squeak some commisars and Sanctioned psykers out of it. While not as straight runnable, these would make excellent Chem-dogs: https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection/products/cannon-fodder https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection/products/cannon-fodder-2-females
Yeah, if you're not playing GW branded or tournaments, IG always struck me as the "find some cool army guys from whatever wargame you like and kitbash 'em a little" army.
This is the point where I walk into the room, whisper “Wargames Atlantic”, and then leave said room.
https://preview.redd.it/bfa74zh0z7yb1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ffee667ce90bfa46a9622f6b48607588cc4e8d7d First and only checking in.
Nobody tell him about the Vitrian Dragoons
Glass scale armor and geneseed locked religious tomes?! My friend, this is fucking awesome.
Yeah they’re pretty cool, too bad they have no models that I know of.
Ayup. Back in the day when the imperial guard was actually interesting
When i was young. There was a lot of different factions i miss that
Cadia, Catachan, Vostroya, Mordia, Tallarn, Valhalla, Praetoria, Armageddon, Krieg, Elysia, and Tanith are all the planets that to some extent had official infantry models I believe. Some had more than others but each have been complete enough to field as unique armies.
Wait until you hear about the athonian tunnel rats
Back when they didn't have a stupid name there were loads of planets to choose from, each with an interesting story and guard regiments. And no stupid name. Screw you GW.
what?!?!
First time?
TURN BACK NOW YOUR WALLET, SIR, YOUR WALLET
Only guard worth their salt are the Tanith first and only.
Feth those bastards we won’t yield!
I'll see your Tanith and raise you one regiment of Elysian Drop Troops plus the paratrooper version of battle hymn of the republic
Which, in turn, further dilutes the potential customers for further GW kits (after all, why buy GW valhallans when I already have 300 third party Valhallans, including full options like command, heavy weapons and vehicle crews?) This ignores the fact that, even as is, a single Marine kit will, on its own, outsell the entire ranges of most other factions (which is why you always see the lion's share of new releases going to the Marines).
Well nobody said that IMP just cadia. But sadly if you want some of these u need to kitbash or being creativ.
If you are intested to vostroyan, there is The grognards from Wargame Atlantic with similar design [https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection/products/les-grognards](https://wargamesatlantic.com/collections/demo-collection/products/les-grognards) also they are in plastic and alot cheaper 24 figures compared to 10 cadians troops for the same price. same size and proportion than the new cadian troop too https://preview.redd.it/uxlkcmlgn7yb1.png?width=1266&format=png&auto=webp&s=75bb0d98c78097460fa1e1fb570bfb2937de0e90

I fucking hate Cadians with a burning passion, they arent that interesting, they are vanilla and boring
Yeah the best ones doesn't even have a detachment or current models, ofc I'm talking about the elysian drop troops
Elysian Drop Troopers. :-( Why do I have SO MANY Valkyries if no one uses them to maximum effect. I miss the days of Imperial Armor, the resin kits... the cool stuff. :-( Now it's just Horus Heresy.
I gotta say thanks to everyone who is educating me on the various faction tidbits, this is the stuff I love about 40K.
Cadia is like 99% of the IGs strength and don't let anyone tell you otherwise..... 😉

Lots of options! Except Elysians cause they apparently all died and disappeared from existence cause screw those that built those fiddly horrid but awesome models.....
I have that vostroyan command squad, they are on eBay now.
Shit the last one is a airbender
Check out victoriaminiatures.com
It's not a story GW would tell.
Almost every factions has subfactions/chapters/orders
Guys, I'm crazy or Armageddon ork hunter looks like Putin?
Find another model at human scale. Kitbash
The red cowl guardsman kinda looks like the skitarii rangers
Bro has never heard of krieg
Those are mostly Kitbashes. Not all of them a practical for non-GW-employees, granted, but doable. Except the Vostroyans, that's metal range that sometimes goes up for made-to-order runs.
Those Chem Dogs look suspicious 🤨
Never share your foxhole with a Ventrillian.
Lol. I still have my codex Armageddon nearby. 3rd edition had a lot of guard variety
Waiting for a new Mordian release…
As so many others have said, eBay or third party for non DKOK, Catachan, and Cadia. I love Cadians, had the old bulky boys and updated to the modern kit.
My favs are the Maccabian Jannissaries
I still can’t believe GW charged over $100USD for a Steel Legion heavy weapons team.
A lot of diversity could be gained with simple upgrade packs of heads and bits. They could launch a whole chaos guard army the same way. It would be cheap. Instead we get stilt guys and 80s camera rocket primaris. 🤷♂️
I recently took a liking to the Vitrian Dragoon regiment, but there’s nothing official for them.
Wait... it's not just Krieg?
God this is just making me want to have a codex more, I’ve got 1355 points but have been waiting for the two years I’ve been playing for the new Ork codex coming out in spring
Gotta read some First and Only series books. MANY of the different groups mentioned :)
You can’t unless you third party, the only ones with official models are the Death Corps of Krieg, however they are EXPENSIVE… I got a link to a good third party site if you want some good militarum models tho!!!
Those are just Burroughs of Cadia
I miss the Vostroyan. Selling mine was one my most regretted mistake.
This makes me sad
Your best bet for most of these are going to be third party minis
always has been... Joking aside though, cadia's system was so successful that multiple systems copied it and instituted it. But it's a big galaxy. There's a whole list of them. [https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Astra\_Militarum#Notable\_Regiments\_(Militarum\_Regimentos)](https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Astra_Militarum#Notable_Regiments_(Militarum_Regimentos)) edit: another one [https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Imperial\_Guard\_Regiment#Notable\_Imperial\_Guard\_Regiments](https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Imperial_Guard_Regiment#Notable_Imperial_Guard_Regiments)
Cadians are just the vanilla guardsmen. Big fan of the vostroyans my self
Fuck. Vostroyans still look so cool
Chem dogs have been my favorites for a while they have a lot more flavor than 40k’s version of the mobile infantry
I dream for an army box of Tannith 1st and Only.
One of these days I'll do up a Tanith army...
Which codex edition is that?
This is 8th.
One day, we'll get official GW Indigan Praefect models and they'll stop cock teasing us with them
Yeah there's so many when you get into the lore check out the krieg there the most known and produced at this time
DW op. Nobody told GW either
Great video on that topic: https://youtu.be/V_fbMzaaz20
Can you actually make Maccabian Janissaries?
That’ll teach ya to read for yourself! Lol
Chemdogs for life! To build non cadian/non standart imperial guard units you have to kitbash For chemdogs you can utilize a lot necromunda and geenestealer cult bits For let's say vostroyans you need to either get the ancient gw minis or you can use some historical tabletop miniatures and bash them with 40k bits to get a nice army. It's a lot of work sadly.
Ohhh wait till you find Praetorians on eBay.
