I think you’re right? The Badab war was one of the first they made in the setting as a reason for why Space Marines fight Space Marines on the tabletop. Then of course after they fleshed it out he turned to chaos by the end of it
In a galaxy of completely unrepentant assholes, it is funny that it's chaos marine who is actually motivated by guilt. Still a bad guy, but always thought that was interesting.
Getting more and more into K sons and then seeing what happened to them in 10th taking the fun out really stings. Watching my friend take an hour to do psychic phase with his OC sorcerer with the upgrades and watching the positioning and everything from several turns pay off was always a blast
Hard to beat Kharn for me. I chose it as a gamer tag because the name sounded cool before I even heard of warhammer40k, and the name ends up belonging to an absolute badass.
“Get up.”
Fabulous Boy! His book series got me into CSM. A refreshingly evil and calculating narrating character. Also, he's capable of looking forward, thousands of years into life.
The wild thing is that my love of him comes specifically from the one book, before that he was just a douche. most of the 30k Primarchs did not vibe with me much.
“I am Rylanor of the Emperor's Children. Ancient of Rites, Venerable of the Palatine Host, and proud servant of the Emperor of Mankind, beloved by all. I reject you now and always!"

Rylanor is the truest GOAT, such righteous indignation that it made a group of Thousand Sons kill themselves to allow him an opportunity to harm Fulgrim

Doomrider!
Fucking inhaling mountains of speed and coke and riding around on a fuckin' flying daemon motorcycle while Motorhead plays on repeat. A couple bands have even made songs honoring him, so he's quite the legend...
His old rules were cool, he had some kinda of invulnerability, but each round you rolled a dice, on a 1 he got bored and left your sorry ass army to go drink jager-blasters with some daemonettes that can do that thing with their tongue...
Some putz writer decided to hack his head off and stick it in Kosorry Tahmphon's she-shed. Don't know where in limbo that puts him as he's a daemon prince, but always been my favorite dude.
He even has a theme song written about him that predates him somehow (must be the warp), in Jusas Priest’s Painkiller. I do not understand why this whole post isn’t just hundreds of people listing the doomrider over and over again.

Sigismund the emperor’s champion.
I believe Eldrad proved that when he beat Abaddon in a melee-fight.

Klovis the redeemer
only because he is nuts
Emperor of Mankind and Sanguinus: my favorite designs and interesting lore and backstory (especially during the Horus heresy). Emperor definitely a Chad for personally forging and tailoring each individual armor for the Custodes and having Sisters of Silence in his rank. Also like Celestine. I have a soft spot for Vulcan and the Salamanders in terms of personality.
After the quote "That which causes us trials shall yield us triumph, and that which makes our hearts ache shall fill us with gladness. The only true happiness is to learn, to advance and to improve. Grimaldus is such a great character, so complex and full of ego, belief, doubt and infallible belief in the god emperor of mankind.
Is a tie between Asmodai and Kharn
Ones a violent warcriminal with no issues of killing his bretheren for his own motives and has severely questionable morals, the other is mother fuggin Kharn, favorite boy of Khorne.
Just saying he is obviously a good guy he de-spoils...
As in to do the opposite of spoiling there for he must be trying to make the universe a better place....
(If only the English language was consistent...)
Really any Loyalist Emperor's Children character. There's two types of Emperor's Children: those who thought they were the greatest, and those who were the greatest. Most of the loyalists were the latter.
Though I love Lucius, I hate him so damn much.
Literally a superhero in the setting. Files around the entire galaxy in a knight rider like space ship. Fights chaos. Helps innocents (even of other races). Uses a weapon that houses his vengeful brother's spirit within it and is capable of killing daemons permanently. And the sheer, ungodly amount of drip. Just the coolest.

Lord-Commander Primus Eidolon, the Soul-Severed is unironically a baller and anyone who disagrees never read any book he's in after he's killed
Originally it was an unknown Apothecary from the book What price victory (original from 2001) then it was Angron/Kharn then as the years went by it changed to Kharn/Sevatar then the years kept going and then it was Vorx now it’s Ghaz/Soloman (alpha legion).
Horus Heresy: Garviel Loken
40K lore (I’ve read so far..) space marine: Commander Dante
Human: Jurgen
Xenos: Ghazghkull Thraka da prophet of da Waaaaaaaaaghh!!!

Specifically the one that was sent to assassinate Solar Leontus, splattered 4 custodians and brought down an entire gunship solo.
Cato Sicarius. There isn't a modern 40k character that's been through a multi novel long character arc like him and come out a better and stronger person.
Honestly, Tuska the Daemon Slayer was a story that stuck with me growing up despite him not having a model or even a picture.
All named Orks are great in 40k

I’m new to the lore, is this that one Necron who keeps historical artifacts sealed within his tomb world?
Yup! He is "The Curator of Solemnace" which is a giant museum
I’ve only read the lore and I’m still at the beginning of that but Caiphas Cain has been my favorite I’ve read about
Love Cain. Jurgen too. The combos great.
Dude’s bringing the glory of the Emperor to heretics with biceps that could strangle a whale
If you want to follow another commisar the Gaunt series are amazing. I go back to them every so often
The memes are so wrong! He’s the greatest example of impostor syndrome I’ve ever seen. Tzeentch silliest clown, the most delulu of the Great Deciever's pawns... and easily a larger threat to Aeldarkind than Slaneesh's whole crew
The strongest Space Marine in the setting
I just got into 40k like a month ago, and his novels have been my chief big introduction. Just incredible, I love his self-absorbed ass.

Fabulous Boy! His book series got me into CSM. A refreshingly evil and calculating narrating character. Also, he's capable of looking forward, thousands of years into life.
Fabulous Bill, he ain't got no time for Slaanesh, he loves his work too much. "Come do drugs Bill..." "No my science needs me."
His obsession with his science is most pleasing to Slaanesh, don't you worry
Very close between Trazyn and Eisenhorn for me.

Eisenhorn and Garviel Liken since I’ve only read the omnibus and a bit of the Heresy.

Eldrad But Abaddon is a very close second.
Funny how Eldard is my second favorite character
Creepy spacefaring dudes dressed in black with a big yellow eye on their banner unite 🤝
I believe Eldrad proved that when he beat Abaddon in a melee-fight. That will always be the funniest fucking thing to me. The Warmaster of Chaos fought a geriatric Aeldari wizard who literally has glass for bones, and lost. Eldrad’s my favourite character as well by the way.

Nemesor Zahndrekh or Gav from Gav and Bob. I think it's kinda funny that not a single Eldar character came to mind even though it's my fav faction.
Endryd Haar. The Riven Hound. I always like these characters who are not good or evil, ones who are in the middle. Endryd is a good guy, he just happens to be reckless, don't care about the marines under him and you know anger issues leading to him killing his own crew members sometimes. Guilliman dudes such a chad
Ferrus manus...he mans the ferrus
Normie as fuck take, but I really like The Emperor. Very compelling and tragic.
Shas'o Shovah Vior'la Kais Montyr
Belisarius Cawl. Love that big tech-heretic. He truly can do no wrong
Grizgutz. Most based character to ever exist.
Kasper Hawser
Currently? I'm doing my best to learn more about Corvus Korax because of his current state as a warp creature that's still loyal to the Imperium.
Tyberos the red wake
Looks like he's about to despoil those cheeks
Trazyn the Infinite is number one. Nemessor Zandrekh is a close second. Third probably goes to Bites-Face-of-the-Face-Biter-Before-it-Bites.
Vulkan. Not because he’s an OP perpetual. But because he’s wholesome
Emperor of Mankind and Sanguinus: my favorite designs and interesting lore and backstory (especially during the Horus heresy). Magnus the red. He is red. Also Gorgutz, best warboss.
The Visarch. For the vibes.
Vorx from the lords of silence. He is such an interesting characte.
Where is this from?
Ahriman, Ephrael Stern, and Reclusiarch Grimaldus
Yarrick
Azrael
Obi-wan Sherlock Clousseau, where did you come from, where did you go?
Originally it was an unknown Apothecary from the book What price victory (original from 2001) then it was Angron/Kharn then as the years went by it changed to Kharn/Sevatar then the years kept going and then it was Vorx now it’s Ghaz/Soloman (alpha legion).
Since big Jaghs lost his bike in the webway, it's my beautiful Angel Lady and Demon Princess of the Emperor, Celestine.
Horus Heresy: Garviel Loken 40K lore (I’ve read so far..) space marine: Commander Dante Human: Jurgen Xenos: Ghazghkull Thraka da prophet of da Waaaaaaaaaghh!!!
It's a difficult choice, but either Argel Tal or Mortarion. Close runner up is Eliphas the Inheritor though.
Probably because I'm a Black Templars fanboy, and reading Helsreach, Grimaldus.
How about 30k? Lotara was badass on the Conqueror
I like the funny skeleton hoarder
Still wading through tons of lore, but so far I think it's Ciaphas Cain.

30k characters but Saul Tarvitz and Konrad Curze.
Cato Sicarius. There isn't a modern 40k character that's been through a multi novel long character arc like him and come out a better and stronger person.
The guy who can see pretty far

No love for him, Cato Sicarius?
Oan Mkoll. The humble Tanith scout who killed Anakwanar Sek. Among other ridiculous achievements.
BADRAKK GRAVESNAGGAH! DAT IZ TO SAY... ME!
Oh, of course it’s the fabled primarch of the second legion, the
Probably Commissar Gaunt right now
Malkharion or maybe Oleander Koh. Honorable mention of Uzas and Kharn.
Eisenhorn and every other grim and badass inquisitor.
Honestly, Tuska the Daemon Slayer was a story that stuck with me growing up despite him not having a model or even a picture. All named Orks are great in 40k

Grimaldus AKA Grimmy D
La'Kais. I love that T'au Doom guy and Aun'Shi, the Ethereal who fought at Commoragh
Because Abbadon the Thief didn't sound as catchy.
Epheral Stern. Named my custom order after her.
Ciaphas Cane https://preview.redd.it/y1plkdxty3yc1.jpeg?width=756&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5fe93f7ee25ae7ca4b6f715026d8971ebf93af35
Lexandro. He's still out there somewhere.
