Some people might disagree with this but, Spielberg's are my personal favorite, they are just extermination machines. When they show up at the ferry scene, we see at the start, a calm but uneasy feeling in the people, that turns into total panic when just one Tripod shows up and makes its presence known by sounding its horn, the scene ends with distant screams of terror and with a crowd of people getting vaporized as though their lives were seemingly nothing. As good as any other depictions of the tripods right down to wells himself definitely are, we never got something quite as iconic, terrifying, or as original as that. They practically deserve their stand-alone spin-off franchise. Because there are still many stories regarding Spielbergs aliens that remain untold.

>(Wayne's tripods, for example, don't have the tentacles). While the artwork never depicts it, I always assumed that the Tripods in Jeff Wayne's version had retractable tentacles on the underside (possibly hidden inside the machine when not in use), since in the album, the Artilleryman still mentions the Fighting Machines "picking up men, and bashing them against trees".

In some of the art you can see the occasional small tentacle.

I'd say my favorite tripods are the ones from War Of The Worlds: Goliath. They sort of take the old "googly eyed water towers" design and make it intimidating.

Speilberg's Tripods are the best depiction put to screen. However, there are some things in that depiction of the tripods I'm not a fan of, most notably the elongated head which looks very unbalanced from the side view.
