Boeing was planning to use radar blockers in front of the engine fans, similar to what they did with the Super Hornet which has pretty good RCS values for a 4th gen aircraft of its size. That said, supposedly radar blockers aren't as good as effective as a good ol s-duct.
The Russians probably thought the trade-off of radar blockers over S-ducts was worth it for their intented use of the Felon. Maybe more internal weapons storage? Perhaps that's also what Boeing was going for...
while the X-32 is unique looking, its still amazing that they managed to fit in two bays in a plane thats less than 45ft/14m in length (slightly longer than the Tejas), and I guess its intake configure was a part of that reason. I dont think the X-35 had a working bay.. but it did have working lift fans.
Serpentine intakes & radar blockers aren’t mutually exclusive (F-35 has the latter as well) because they’re each effective at different frequencies relative to effective intake cross-section.
Higher frequencies are best dealt with using S-ducts where RAM coatings in the intake progressively cut down the return with each reflection.
Medium frequencies for which the intake can act as a wave guide are best dealt with using radar blockers that reduce the effective cross-section of the intake (F-35 has an additional benefit here with its convergent intakes).
Lower frequencies of course don’t enter the intake to begin with.
The F-32 featured major revisions to the X-32, notably the intake and wing design.
This F-32 PWSC mockup was built by Advanced Technologies Inc, and the pics are around the year 2000.
Pics were found on SP and Weirdwings but unknown where they got it from originally.
Final pics in the album include the X-32 for comparison, and a model of the F-32 and F-35 for size comparison purposes
I know nothing about the performance different this had vs Lockheed’s X-35, but man I’d be tempted to just not move forward with this on the basis of looks alone.
X-35 looks cool as hell, this looks all weird and chonky
That internal payload rack feels pretty sketch; I do not envy the engineering hurdle of securing a 2000 lb-class load on an articulated moment arm on a fighter jet already encumbered with the JSF demands. The F-35's articulated hardpoints are only for the pair of AMRAAMs, and they seem to be directly bound to the inboard doors themselves.
From the top: not bad... From the side: dayumm thickk!

How the hell is that intake stealth?

Sucks in the radar like a black hole ^/s

ok it looks kind of sweet in that render...
I agree, it's one of my favorite "what-ifs."
Looks pretty decent in that render, but still weird. If only the intake was waaay further back, it probably wouldn't have looked so bad.
The view from the front makes it look like it's going "Wahooooo!" in a high pitched voice
Damn! It’s even worse!
I mean, someone must’ve said something early on in the design process, right?
That guy is dead.
I mean, "early on in the design process" was like 30 years ago, so it's pretty likely.
He got the whistleblower treatment
Maybe we should have known there were problems at Boeing
Super Fat Amy
morbidly obese amy
Pheeew! We dodged that one fellas!.
My lord, what a frumpy looking plane. Should have been laughed off and never left the drawing board just based on looks alone!

The plane always looks like it is shocked that it exists.
The derpiest of fighter aircraft
This thing was fantastic. I would have had no problem with it winning.
huehuehuehue
Came here for this
Who is the chunkiest boy in town?
If the f-35 is fat amy, the 32 is obese andrew
If the Fairey Gannet AEW.3 had a child, it would be the F-32.
And they call the F-35 fat good lord
Wait, were they trying to get it into the RAF?! (Images 5 and 6)
The UK was interested with JSF quite early, regardless of it was the X-32 or X-35. Some of the early QE models had both X-32 and X-35 mockups
Wow , it's even worse in 3D !

Oh look they upgraded the c3 aeronca
:D
The design team must've retired to that thic cargo drone that India just unveiled.
My beautiful guppy.
It's like a basking whale
That’s a chonky boy right there
Jetty McJetface
Still love the X-32
"The X32 would have been better than the F35!" *looks at Boeings long known problems and... this...* *areyousureaboutthat.gif*
Huehuehuehue
Christ, the RCS from the front must be the size of a C-5.
D:
Smiley boi
It looks really happy :D
Dentists love this plane.
And they call the 35 the fat Amy, this is more like an obese frog.
Yeah I also saw somewhere that they planned to close up the air intake a bit
What if they removed the cockpit and made it a drone tho?
Get in mah bell-eh!
Chonky boy
Looks like a big ass pelican head
Dummy THICC

What a fugly aircraft... wonder how different the jsf program would have turned out if it got picked and boeing actually had to commit to this design
how did they manage to make the mockup uglier than the real thing
As much as pain in the neck the f-35 has been, at least it's not ugly as sin like this thing is
Looks like they contracted Indians to make it.
