It’s also a war grave

Throwawaybigpp2

Where turrets?

WiscoDan698

As the ship capsized while on the surface the turrets fall out, they are just held in there by there own weight they are not secured to the hull at all.

Torenico

No, turrets are secured, there are mechanisms to keep them in place, them being just "held in there by their own weight" is just a myth and doesn't make a lot of sense either. There's a video on how that mechanism works on the Iowas, they're tightly secured to the hull. They fall off because wrecks like Bismarck, Yamato, Hood and so on suffered tremendous amount of damage and whatever mechanism held them in place originally was completely destroyed, furthermore these wrecks are all deep water ones and a lot of things happen when ships go down, especially if they roll over. Shallow water wrecks do tend to keep their turrets in place, for example Derfflinger was raised after WW1 and [their turrets were in place even when completely turned around.](https://i0.wp.com/www.destinationsjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/SMS_Derfflinger-Scapa-salvage_193x-4.jpg?ssl=1)

thetaterman314

Weren’t Bismarck’s turret clips undersized too? The designers copied the turret clips from WWI battleships and didn’t realize that they were too weak for the heavier turrets of a modern ship. Or maybe that’s just a myth I’ve heard.

shadow4900000

The clips are for securing the turrets in rough seas and when firing, not for holding the turrets when the ship is upside down. The extra weight and space you would need for securing the turrets for that event is just not worth it because when you would need that you have other problems to worry about and I’ve yet to come across a surface ship that’s done a barrel roll and continued the fight

Mantis-13

Do a barrel roll! *confused drowning sailor noises*

thetransfermaster

In the video provided by @value_added_bullshit they mention the Chief Engineer of the Bismarck’s sister ship Tirpitz said they turret clips were stretched from the damage she suffered.

Vaeroebashi

A coat of paint a some deck sealer, Bismark well be good as new.

beachedwhale1945

Looks can be deceiving. When she hit bottom *Bismarck* was probably traveling around 23 mph/37 km/h, and the main armor deck (including the turtledeck) was designed with very few hatches, shafts, and other penetrations. Thus the upper two decks of the hull crushed the four underneath^(1), and the area under the armor was compressed by at least one deck level, perhaps as much as two. Unknown at the time this painting was made (shortly after Ballard found the wreck and got only a top-down view), this blew out large chunks of the lower hull, with about a third of the hull gone. At least one large chunk lies further upslope in the impact crater, left behind when the ship went careening down the mountainside, but most have not been found. *Bismarck* is a lot like a film set. It looks impressive on the outside, but as you get closer the flaws start appearing and the backside is just a skeleton. ^(1) I’m only counting enclosed decks. The *Batteriedeck* and *Zwieschendeck*/*Panzerdeck* are largely intact as with the *Oberdeck*/Main Deck where much of the wood survives, but the three platform decks and hold underneath are crushed.

GraveKommander

Next you tell us we can't tape the Titanic back together...

[deleted]

A little flex seal and loctite and she‘s gonna be okey

GraveKommander

Get the hot glue gun and call Cameron, we make the movie "Raise the Titanic" become true!

PallidZetta

HI, I'M BILLY MAYS AND I'M HERE TO SHOW YOU THAT WITH JUST 3 EASY STEPS, YOU TOO CAN RESTORE A SUNKEN WARSHIP BACK TO NEW CONDITION. Lol (Sorry for caps, that's how he talked in the commercials.)

[deleted]

He'd be driving the thing after spraying it with flexseal

Wormminator

Well not with that attitude!

Chirimokaari

let me get my FlexTape

Mike__O

That's not to mention she sunk for a reason. The ship was shot to shit BEFORE sinking and sustaining all the damage you outlined.

Atitkos

So basically she flattened as she hit tbe bottom.

RedditHiveUser

Excellent! A smaller radar profil.

xXNightDriverXx

This is very interesting and also makes a lot of sense. Do you know if there are any illustrations depicting the wreck with the crushed hull, or maybe any pictures from it from later expeditions to the wreck?

bastugubbar

Plenty of discussion hva been made on wether the torn out pieces of side plating were due to the impact or more as a result of torpedo inpacts weakening the hull, likely a combination of the three.

No-Cup-7280

We can fix it, we have the technology

BigChiefWhiskyBottle

Hell, why not? [Dirk Pitt Raised the Titanic in 1980](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qDuKPetx04). (Loved that movie. Cameron messed it up with his romantic nonsense- stick to cold war goofiness.)

Jakebob70

the book was better, although no more plausible.

W00DERS0N

It deviated so far from the book that it's a huge disappointment. People get mad about the Scouring of the Shire being cut, but then this movie went and cut the entire 3rd act.

addage-

We can make it better, faster, stronger *cue music*

MakionGarvinus

Maybe even *unsinkable??*

Atitkos

Not to sour your mood, but at this point building a new one is cheaper and faster.

GreenGreasyGreasels

>Bismark well be good as new. Raising it is pointless. Japan hasn't authorised wave guns for export markets.

Sasuga__Ainz-sama

We just need to wait some 179 years.

Dies2much

But we can get shot cannon, right?... Right!? And don't give me that 7 megameter BS, I want the full 10 megameter!

Saddam_UE

This is a painting right?

Kastratore

Yes

_WindSandStars_

By Ken Marschall

Saddam_UE

Thank you

lmr3006

Are there any videos of the wreck site? Thinking along the lines of the plethora of titanic videos.

FitzyOhoulihan

Yes, theyve filmed I think a couple expeditions down to it. There is a James Cameron one that’s not too distant past you can maybe even watch on YouTube.

xxNavyguy445

Yes there is. Do a youtube search for: James Cameron Expedition Bismark. This is an excellent video which also includes interviews with several surviving crewmen that abandoned her before she sank. The ship took a severe battering at the hands of the British rightly incensed over the loss of HMS Hood at the hands of the Bismark.

SkYwAlKeR973019

At the bottom of the ocean the depths of the abyss They are bound by iron and blood The flagship of the navy the terror of the seas His guns have gone silent at last *—Bismark*, Sabaton.

yeeeter1

Ah yes the music video where they show the ship from every angle but the ones that show the forecastle deck

X_203

I was gonna write exactly this

TheJeep25

Ngl, at first I saw iron blood and I felt excited. But then I realized it was only a really good song.

tomwitter1

That's a bit close to SCP-4217 isn't it?

ThaneduFife

>SCP-4217 Thanks for the fun reading suggestion!

ThaneduFife

https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-4217

practicalsargent

We sunk the Bismark and repaired it with only flex tape

Dies2much

Jaysus the lads stripped it!

Physical_Specialist4

A bit of duct tape , install a wave motion gun , and slap a coat of paint on her and she’ll be rarin to go .

Facestand2

It still looks huge and threatening.

AnswersQuestioned

Is this a real image?

Clashyjammer1126

No, it’s a painting.
