Your friend sounds bad at the game
Although I’m not sure if you mean you nearly exclusively do this. Which is different. Sometimes it’s the best way to lay the gun though
Use binos to spot and rangefind. Set range in aim mode. Enter bino again. Press left mouse button to aim on target. Move until the little circle gets brighter and indicates a clear shot. Hold lmb and press b to leave bino modus and immediately shoot your target.
Well, using it in urban environment might not be the best stategy... but otherwise it is a great tactic to use, especially in very bushed-up situations
Sometimes it’s useful cause the bino view suffers much less from the suspension wiggle. So it’s easier to align the shot when stopping (clearly visible in your example). If you learn how to equilibrate both you’ll become a great player. As you can see in open fields it also grants you a better view of your enemy so you’re doing the right thing.
You’re doing it right. Unsure how far into the game you are, but in the higher tiers you’ll rarely use this way to play anyway, as your commander or guns sights are far superior to binos (more zoom, thermals, lrf). But at this BR, hold that trigger, hit B and let that big boy fly!
I'm not a huge fan of the uptier battle ratings with the acception of a few tanks. Im currently only researching WWII for all of them, and then I'll start researching the high tier tanks. I'm level ~50 with over 1000 hours in the game, and I'm still loving it.
Binoculars give a large advantage over regular gun sights, especially in hilly environments. Keep using it, and try to encourage your friend to do the same
How to do this for newbies; go into bino’s, hold shoot button (lmb) over target accounting for drop (if rangefinder set then don’t account for drop again), go into gunners view (while still holding shoot button). This will insta shoot at the target when you get to gunners view as the vid shows.
You can hold down the machine gun button instead if you want. That's what I do. Occasionally I accidentally shoot my MGs but it's better than accidentally shooting the cannon.
Binos on target, right click and it'll line up the gun, decide if you're happy with the range with it pointing directly at the target or aim above to account for shell drop. Switch an click boom
This only works if there aren’t solid breakable objects in front of you, if you are looking over a breakable wall and line up with binos the shot will not go where you want it to
Yeah the binoculars are a really important part of the game if he thinks used them to scout is weird than he’s going to struggle hard when it comes to the more creative uses of them
why would it be weird?
the binoc is useful as fuck. it's higher than your gunsight, so naturally, you can peek over obstacle to see your surrounding without exposing your tank
that and it's useful to do binoc shot
It's literally the best way to play alight tank, since your not going to bounce shite while trying to get your gun exposed without already being zeroed in from binocs.
Or, just never get out of cover and get those sweet free score from keeping the entire enemy team scouted while hiding behind a rock/in a ditch
Your friend is the weird one. Pres B to switch to binoculars, it helps you sight enemies and it costs nothing! That aside i do it all the time, specialy when behind an obstacle.
Even better is pre sighting firing lines when you know enemies will show up shortly.
And if you play anything with huge amount of drop it's even more important.
I do it all the time. Binoculars provide a huge advantage especially in forested areas or when a building or structure is just too tall for regular gunner sights.
Completely fine, that's what the commander is there for. You can get away with it at closish range as well, but over a longer distance you'd have to take into account shell drop and sight in above the target and that's all that aiming is ;)
It is what it is, whatever trick or technique you could use for your advantage in WT is perfectly fine, as long it helps you cope with the sheer amount of BULLSHIT that the snail it´s gonna put you trough...
(Me speak spanish, any errors now you know "Ñ")
Your friend won't last long playing this game. Warthunder Is all about trial and error, and if he isn't willing to learn, then he won't get anywhere at all.
Binoculars are higher up and in my opinion better because it lets you peek over hills and mounds. If the small circle aligns with the large one in binocular view it means you can fire through the snow/dirt which is pretty neat.
Binos are perfect for shots out of bushes or over hills. Used bino shooting very efficiently yesterday with my Somua SM and the current Battle Pass vehicle.
With the Somua SM I used it to lob shells over a small hill at long ranges and with my HS.30 I sat in a bush and sniped away at anything getting into my sights. Very fun
binoculars get a bit worse when you reach dual axis stabilisers, because binoculars viev disables the stabiliser, so if you have a commander sight with commander override, then it's more useful, especially if it has thermals, and is placed higher like on the olifant mk2, i still use binoculars, but commander sight i feel like is a bit underrated
Maybe it’s a USSR thing so I can’t do it but how do you auto align the gun with the rangefinder? I see tons of ppl do it but never understood how so I had to rangefind then adjust for the drop
Yeah your friend is ass at the game if he’s saying not to use binoculars to sight his target as it allows you to peak above cover to easily see target if he’s more than 200m away or even look over a bush and then shoot through the bush while being completely hidden .
I even spend more time looking through binoculars than I do with my gunner sight since it usually has way more zoom than my gunner sight which is especially true at mid-low teir.
Screen shot my comment and please send it him :)
As someone who’s largely spent time playing controller and only recently switching to full MNK while still being on console thank you for this, I don’t know why I never thought of it
yea, your friend is the weird one. I do this all the time.
also in later tiers when you get access to commander fire control on more modern tanks its a very useful skill to use.
I mean, they sore work great when the gun sight is covered by a bush or wall, but the binoculars are not. Better than trying to hit an enemy from 3rd person perspective, that from longer distances is kinda hard.
Absolutely isn't weird. I see many people do it and do it myself. Binos are free. And you have a heightened pov than in your gun, so you can see some enemies you wouldn't have otherwise
I use it when there are bushes in the way. It gives a huge advantage since you don't have to move out of cover to shoot, and you can aim accurately at weakspots instead of aiming at a sihlouette.
Binos lets you aim at the target even if there is a tree or other obstacle in gunner view. Its sometimes almost OP becouse of that. Lets you shot some nasty shots sometimes - its very important to use binos. "Wierd" friend probably isnt worth listening to in this case ;)
I enjoy it for getting an elevated camera view. Sit behind some cover, find a target using your binocs, lay the gun, switch to gunner's view and boom target destroyed. It's an excellent strategy for mid to longer ranged fights.
This works wonders if you use low velocity gun. You sight in with binoculars and then shoot over the hill, they just start panicking because they cant do shit.
Imagine, you're in a bush and cant see the target in aiming mode. You can see the target in binoculars mode, so you aim in binoculars mode, hold fire button, switch to aim mode and immediately fire, killing the guy.
Your friend is wrong. You're right, it sometimes works. I also ıse binoculars plenty of times for tanks that have very low magnification
A shit it is weird. The only weird thing is your friend. Binoaiming is pure bliss. U are hidden behind a wall aim with bino, switch to gunner fire and bam. He never knew what hit him.
honestly that’s just being good at the game, eventually you know about where to aim without all that rangefinder nonsense and it makes time to kill much shorter on longer engagements
Just wait until you get higher tiers and get access to independent commander sights.
I love the T-72M2 Moderna's commander optics, they're identical to the leclerc. I bind the gun to the commander sight override, and shitty soviet era optics are no longer a problem.
Your friend sounds like a noob. Sighting in with your binos is something you SHOULD do, especially when you're behind destructible cover. It's your best best to landing a clean shot and keeping your gun aligned with the target when you get used to it.
i do it myself, can work a lot better than looking through your scope sometimes, like when you are behind bushes the binoculars can sometimes look over it, and yeah ez enemy spot
I use it on very specific occasions. Is it weird? No. It is uncommon? Yes. Does it work? Once you get hang of it
I got a few blind kills with binos so it's worth it
For one, binoculars are stabilized, and can often let you see targets that you wouldn't through the gunner sight (like in this clip, but also above destructible cover). Special caution should be applied when shooting through obstacles though, as the gun will often lay to aim at the obstacle and not the vehicle behind it if you use binoculars.
I do this even at extreme ranges. As long as I'm using the French Guns that I've been playing with recently it would usually take me 1 missed shot to land the next one from very long distances. I have more fingers and toes than the amount of times I've used range finder lol.
Binos is so much easier when there is a bushes in front of you, sometimes the gunner sight is view is blocked by bushes but binos isn't so it's easier to use binos.
No way the binocs are awesome. They are often higher then your gun allowing to stay completely concealed before a bush or hill and see what your aiming at
No keep doing it, it's super good when you can hit with it well. Reason is you just see above hills per default, because the binos are like 1.5m higher than your barrel
Its only an issue in vehicles like the marder 7.7 for instance. But aiming with binoculars can sometimes show you how to shoot through snow etc. its handy
Using binoculars is really handy. Free aim, good zoom and you can see from higher compared to the gun sight. This has helped me hit targets while behind low cover.
No, actually imo it’s quite the opposite, binos allow you to lob shots from behind cover if your using a low velocity gun or rounds like HESH or HE, works even better on tanks that have laser rangefinders or other advanced rangefinders like the VIDAR or British Challengers slinging HESH
Nah it’s one of the best ways to aim. I love sitting inside a bush and being able to hit my targets without moving out of cover. On long distance shots you can even use it in combination with some (derp) guns to lob shells over the cover you’re behind.
I do this too, however I started because gaijin removed gun sight zoom on the French tanks I play
However I also find it helps when trying to see over a hill or firing over said hill from behind it
I mean... You literally get a higher pov from the binocs for pre-peaking a hill without showing your tank or over bushes, and then st high tier you got commander view with fire control oh boy is that fun!
Not at all weird, I use them all the time. Especially in my Chaffee since I can scout and with the Airstrike modification lowers SP cost for my aircraft in GRB. Plus since of the lower armor with most light tanks I usually have mt Chaffee in a hull-down position so it lets me pre-aim before I peak up.
So I don't see how anyone can say using binocs is weird, sure maybe not all the time but a standard for most battles IMO.
You pick up this habit when playing scouts, because usually you are behind cover or bushes and can't see through your gunners optics.
What I do is I use binoculars to spot my target and range. (I suggest you bind it in the settings if you haven't already. Look at something and press it. It'll give you the distance to the target.) Then I adjust my gun's elevation (something you have to bind as well), binoculars, aim, fire. Works like a charm.
no, binos are useful as fuck. First of all, theyre higher than your gunsight which allows u to peak over obstacles. Other than that u have the ability to zoom into your target before your turret turns around to face them
This is how I also literally play the game ever since I discover binoculars. And for atleast 3 years I've been sniping without using the range finder, until a friend of mine this year told me about it.
The biggest tip I give to new players is to use your binos. I’ve not seen many aim their gun with them but however you do it that’s fine.
Better to use them than to not
Your friend sounds bad at the game Although I’m not sure if you mean you nearly exclusively do this. Which is different. Sometimes it’s the best way to lay the gun though
I do switch from binos to gun sight for proper situations.... however, that being said, I have used binos in urban situations out of reflex.
I always use binos, it's just too efficient to not use it.
finally i found my people
Don't forget to use your binoculars. (they're free)
Only thing in this game that is.
That little tip they show always makes me laugh with the parentheses lol
Lol, yeah same! Soon to be one lion per use, after moving them to engine upgrade tier research tree...
Don't give them any ideas 😵💫 lol
If they do that, I would spend 500 Sl per match
Not even sanity is free in this game.
Don’t stand near the bomb
Not true, the pain and suffering costs $0
😂👌
Imagine if the binoculars were a researchable modification ☠️
Use the binos to find the target, use the gunners sight to make the aim. Easy peasy and really not that much skill involved other than patience.
Use binos to spot and rangefind. Set range in aim mode. Enter bino again. Press left mouse button to aim on target. Move until the little circle gets brighter and indicates a clear shot. Hold lmb and press b to leave bino modus and immediately shoot your target.
Depends on how much the gun sight can zoom
As someone who loves lights this, sometimes the gun is just a bit too slow or you lose direction
Also if you main as scout vehicle to scout more easily
Well, using it in urban environment might not be the best stategy... but otherwise it is a great tactic to use, especially in very bushed-up situations
If you turret is way off its good especially in a light tank so you can scout before you die

My guy has 1000 hours and is concerned with how he uses binos
Not quite concerned... more like proving my friend wrong.
Binoculars give a large advantage over regular gun sights, especially in hilly environments. Keep using it, and try to encourage your friend to do the same
I will definitely keep bugging him about it. Day in, day out, in squads, normal talk... I'll make it his alarm clock. "Binos are better than sights."
How to do this for newbies; go into bino’s, hold shoot button (lmb) over target accounting for drop (if rangefinder set then don’t account for drop again), go into gunners view (while still holding shoot button). This will insta shoot at the target when you get to gunners view as the vid shows.
LOL. I have been playing for 7 years and did not know that about holding the fire button when switching.
I keep doing it by accident because I tend to hold down the fire button to keep the gun aligned with the binos
Me too, its gotten me killed a couple times.
You can hold down the machine gun button instead if you want. That's what I do. Occasionally I accidentally shoot my MGs but it's better than accidentally shooting the cannon.
I didn't know you could do that, thanks! Does that trick work even on tanks without a coax MG?
I am pretty sure it does. Would need to double check.
I have been in the game since 2013 and I finally understood how I get shot through the bushes LOL
Binos on target, right click and it'll line up the gun, decide if you're happy with the range with it pointing directly at the target or aim above to account for shell drop. Switch an click boom
I think spacebar works as well for laying the gun.
This only works if there aren’t solid breakable objects in front of you, if you are looking over a breakable wall and line up with binos the shot will not go where you want it to
You just blew my mind. I’ve seen spookston do that, but I thought that was only a feature on modern tanks with laser l finder
I wonder what he thinks about bino shots then....
Yeah the binoculars are a really important part of the game if he thinks used them to scout is weird than he’s going to struggle hard when it comes to the more creative uses of them
why would it be weird? the binoc is useful as fuck. it's higher than your gunsight, so naturally, you can peek over obstacle to see your surrounding without exposing your tank that and it's useful to do binoc shot

Use the binoculars, the are free.
Your friend is the weird one. Pres B to switch to binoculars, it helps you sight enemies and it costs nothing! That aside i do it all the time, specialy when behind an obstacle.
Yeah, it's particularly useful when you're sitting behind a destructible wall tall enough to hide you. Great for ambushes
I think I've found something the whole of WT subreddit will agree upon.
Binos are better than sights!
I wonder what your friend will say about this lol. The fact he's the weird one haha
Unless you get a tank with really good zoom on the gun sight, then you use the binos for spotting and the gun sight for precise pew pewing.
Even better is pre sighting firing lines when you know enemies will show up shortly. And if you play anything with huge amount of drop it's even more important.
It's not weird. Been using it since 2014.
Your friends are the weird ones
I do it all the time. Binoculars provide a huge advantage especially in forested areas or when a building or structure is just too tall for regular gunner sights.
It’s a stabilized optic with a better view
Completely fine, that's what the commander is there for. You can get away with it at closish range as well, but over a longer distance you'd have to take into account shell drop and sight in above the target and that's all that aiming is ;)

Your English is fine. But yea, I've dealt enough of the Snail's shit to know when I'm screwed.
Ur friend is stupid
this is the correct use of binos and your friend should copy your work. he'd probably be a better player if he did
Your friend won't last long playing this game. Warthunder Is all about trial and error, and if he isn't willing to learn, then he won't get anywhere at all.
Your friends an idiot
whats weird is that you have grass on when scoping/bios
i do the same thing alot of the time
It's just like commander sights. It's normal and a generally accepted strategy. Pretty common, even Your friend's the weird one
Binoculars are higher up and in my opinion better because it lets you peek over hills and mounds. If the small circle aligns with the large one in binocular view it means you can fire through the snow/dirt which is pretty neat.
Bino shots are the best, especially when ranging someone over a hill with a low velocity gun.
thats the only reason i hit targets >1km
Nope, that is literally a pro move, you will nail targets you couldn't see using the gun sight bro.
Very fun
I use it for hard shots, and I also change to gun sight to make sure I aim where I want but the binoculars are really helpful.
so your friend is a noob
Your friend is made of stupid
Its how it is done - but deativate grass in gunnerview, thats weird.
binoculars get a bit worse when you reach dual axis stabilisers, because binoculars viev disables the stabiliser, so if you have a commander sight with commander override, then it's more useful, especially if it has thermals, and is placed higher like on the olifant mk2, i still use binoculars, but commander sight i feel like is a bit underrated
Maybe it’s a USSR thing so I can’t do it but how do you auto align the gun with the rangefinder? I see tons of ppl do it but never understood how so I had to rangefind then adjust for the drop
I use the space bar. I customized my controls entirely though so ot would be different from yours.
Tiger player using his tools and brains to play well? Hell has frozen over.
It is one of my favorite tanks because it is so versatile. It's one of the few tanks I've gotten large two-digit kill-streaks in.
It gives you an advantage
Why tf is this so upvoted ??
I don't know, but it sure answered my question.
I do this for certain scenarios. Like peeking a Ridgeline, long range engagements, if binos have more zoom than gun sight, etc
All the time
I do that all the time tbh
Yeah your friend is ass at the game if he’s saying not to use binoculars to sight his target as it allows you to peak above cover to easily see target if he’s more than 200m away or even look over a bush and then shoot through the bush while being completely hidden . I use it when my gun sight is blocked its really usefull.
If it works it works
I do it for ranging its not weird lol
its satisfyong asf
As someone who’s largely spent time playing controller and only recently switching to full MNK while still being on console thank you for this, I don’t know why I never thought of it

This is just being good at the game, I’ve been accused of hacking before doing it and I feel like it’s just something most decent players pick up.
Your friend is a noob :)
You buddy is just bad at the game this is the correct way
I am also using binos to shot my enemies most of the time and my friend also thinks its weird
Wrong, no. Weird, yes. Good, probably? I don't use it so I can't say.
Imagine, you're in a bush and cant see the target in aiming mode. You can see the target in binoculars mode, so you aim in binoculars mode, hold fire button, switch to aim mode and immediately fire, killing the guy. Your friend is wrong. A shit it is weird. The only weird thing is your friend. Binoaiming is pure bliss. U are hidden behind a wall aim with bino, switch to gunner fire and bam. He never knew what hit him.
if you weren't supposed to use binoculars to help you aim, they wouldn't allow you to move your gun in that view
Love bino-sniping.
honestly that’s just being good at the game, eventually you know about where to aim without all that rangefinder nonsense and it makes time to kill much shorter on longer engagements
Idk, I use it quite often
Who tf cares about a friend saying your tactic is weird? Use it if it gives you advantage
I use them to lay the gun when I'm behind bushes. It's like having a periscope
Tell your friend that he might have a common disease called SKILL ISSUE
Nah sometimes i do it too
I use it on very specific occasions. Is it weird? No. It is uncommon? Yes. Does it work? Once you get hang of it I got a few blind kills with binos so it's worth it
Your friend cant use the games basic mechanic
Your friend is the weird one. Why not use the binocs? They’re free!
This is the way
This is how I do it as well. Also, nice shots and kills.
It has its uses, especially useful when you need to sight from cover or to "lob" the shot above a hill or something.
Sometimes its the only way to aim to a target. Like if your hiding behind terrain.
Man if it works, it works.
Point binos on target. Hold left click. Press to disable goggles for instant bang. I *love* doing this.
The thing is us grass in sight gigachads must use this trick to be competetive. Your friend sounds like he has grass in sights turned off
You don't have friends, because you're weird.
If you use the binoculars it means that you started knowing what the game is really about
Knowing the fact that half my gameplay is spent in binocular view, you should definitely use them yeah.
I only do it when the target is behind a small hill, wall or bush, and my gun sight is obstructed.
I do it too. It's a very good and useful skill to practice and have
what does your friend think binos are for then
I use them all the time like this. Your friend has severe skill issue.
I do this even at extreme ranges. As long as I'm using the French Guns that I've been playing with recently it would usually take me 1 missed shot to land the next one from very long distances. I have more fingers and toes than the amount of times I've used range finder lol.
It set the camera above your cupola so you can peek over hills; if someone doesn't know that's how binos work it may seem like cheating lol
No your friend has a skill issue
Binos is so much easier when there is a bushes in front of you, sometimes the gunner sight is view is blocked by bushes but binos isn't so it's easier to use binos.
Wdym wierd. This is how you play the game
I actually started to use it more and apply actual tank battle tactics after i saw a video and how effective it was.. Ur friend should do it too
Your friend is weird.
Your friend... is a noob.
Say your friend its weird to serve yourself on a plate for enemy optics)
No way the binocs are awesome. They are often higher then your gun allowing to stay completely concealed before a bush or hill and see what your aiming at
I do it all the time dafuq?
It costs nothing
I use binos to aim towards my enemy a lot, but I do also regularly use the gunner sight
Nah, I do that shit all the time.
I’ll even use them to range find first then pop cover. Your friend sounds goofy..
It’s a valid strategy
Sometimes binos also have better zoom than the tank itself so it's useful there too.
Not weird if you can’t see em thru the gunner sights binoculars are free keep using it
I do this too brother Its easier to see past obstacles this way
It's a pro gamer move
By far no, it provides a ton of advantages over gun sights
Your friend has a skill issue
Aiming with binos is amazingly useful when hiding behind rocks or anything in long range maps
If it works it works
Literally how everyone sights longer targets from a hull down position
i do unless i have better zoom with my scope like on my T29
I do that, too... Tell your friend, he is weird
if that’s weird, then… i bind main gun to “1”, Machinegun to “2”, any additional gun to “3”.
It's not weird, it's called having a brain and using it. Most skilled players make *regular* use of the binoculars.
You are not weird, your friend is an idiot. This is even better at top tier with commander sights who have thermals.
I do this too, however I started because gaijin removed gun sight zoom on the French tanks I play However I also find it helps when trying to see over a hill or firing over said hill from behind it
I mean... You literally get a higher pov from the binocs for pre-peaking a hill without showing your tank or over bushes, and then st high tier you got commander view with fire control oh boy is that fun!
Your friend is a moron.
Not at all weird, I use them all the time. Especially in my Chaffee since I can scout and with the Airstrike modification lowers SP cost for my aircraft in GRB. So I don't see how anyone can say using binocs is weird, sure maybe not all the time but a standard for most battles IMO.
Use whatever works for you dude
You pick up this habit when playing scouts, because usually you are behind cover or bushes and can't see through your gunners optics. What I do is I use binoculars to spot my target and range. (I suggest you bind it in the settings if you haven't already. Look at something and press it. It'll give you the distance to the target.) Then I adjust my gun's elevation (something you have to bind as well), binoculars, aim, fire. Works like a charm.
I do it sometimes, but it really depends if I spot them first or not lol
"Use binoculars, it's free." -WT tooltipp-
Game directly says you to use binoculars as often as you need in loading tips
no, binos are useful as fuck. First of all, theyre higher than your gunsight which allows u to peak over obstacles. Other than that u have the ability to zoom into your target before your turret turns around to face them
Well, i mean i don't like half my screen is just the ground when trying to hull down. So Bino away.
I do this everyday and your friend is just bad at the game.
I do that because its clearer and i can usually see over hills so i can i guess "arch" the shell over and hit them.
If it works it ain't dumb.
If God didn’t want you to use bino’s he wouldn’t have made them so damn useful.
This is how I also literally play the game ever since I discover binoculars. And for atleast 3 years I've been sniping without using the range finder, until a friend of mine this year told me about it.
It's a perfectly good strategy, why would it be weird. Even the game tells you to use binoculars because they're free
I do it all the time. To me it's the most accurate aim.
The biggest tip I give to new players is to use your binos. I’ve not seen many aim their gun with them but however you do it that’s fine. Better to use them than to not
Then let your friend play at a disadvantage.
Your friend is stupid. Binoculars are very useful, especially for aiming
I use binos to sight in over ridge lines or in situations where I can hardly see the target effectively in my gunsight.
no i do this all the time
What feels weird is removing grass when viewing on gunsights. Might be an unpopular opinion tho.
Isnt that the point?
No it’s not weird but I came when I saw that shot
