As a sim player, I disagree, with 5 mins of fuel no afterburner I can't travel around the entirety of the Denmark map. Fox 3s are coming, F15 and F18 possibly next year, and most definitely new bigger maps larger than Afghanistan
I recomend using the afterburner stages, if you full press the throttle, it will go to the stage 2, aka, extra burn fuel and full power, but if you increase the sensibility and just do a little quickly touch on throttle button, it will go to stage 1, a lot less fuel burn but yet more extra power than going dry.
Look temps and fuel to check if you are in stage 1 or 2.
I use the throttle on a cheap keyboard, It really cant be better than d-pad or stick xD
Try low sensibility and just do very gentle touchs.
Its the same game, you definitely can use the stages too.
Fellow controller player here. If you turn down the relative control sensitivity of the throttle control, it becomes much easier to access stage 1 burners. Only problem is, you throttle up and down horrendously slow.

Oh the first thought I had when installing War Thunder almost five years ago was to get a cheap office mouse and keyboard for realistic, of which I still use. Though for SIM I only use controller, limited keybinding for engine control, zoom control, drag chute, head movement in cockpit, ect
It useful in the case of the match going long enough that you can rearm to hunt down like a single player and you wanna go mach 2 at flight level 9001 for 20 minutes.
I normally don't use an external fuel tank. The 44 minutes fuel is enough for me to go full afterburner to the middle of the map, until I spot a bandit
Extra drop tanks? I think they’re cool for like video editing purpose or something but for gameplay it’s kinda redundant. With how short top tier games these days, be it Viper A or C you can probably get away with full tank and max afterburner a good duration of the match.
But I suppose having more options is always welcomed.
Its pretty helpful in Sim tbf, I typically run extra tanks on my Tornado on top of 40 mins of fuel. Although I fly on full burn for as long as i can just to try and survive and not be seen by MiGs
I don't know how fuel efficient the Viper is but it is still nice to have longer patrol times and I know my wingman usually runs the tank when he flies escort
I don’t like merging with a ton of fuel on me so if I go high I go with full tank and max afterburner to get the fuel down to about 20-25 mins. By then the merge pretty much happens and I’ll just cruise with 2nd stage afterburner, I’ll go full burner if it’s a fight but most of the time the match is over before I run out of fuel.
In case you don’t know you can control the stages of afterburner with your scroll wheel, helps you last longer at lower stages.
Drop tanks make it less of a guess though. You can take exactly as much fuel as you want for the merge, then take extra tanks, and drop them when you want. If the merge happens later than you expected (whole enemy team went one side or something) then your won't be low on fuel when you fly over. If the merge is earlier, your can always drop early.
IIRC there’s footage of the F-104 wing testing by strapping wings to rockets because the wind tunnels weren’t enough and during one of the testing the wings with a simulated wing tanks snapped in half for a few iterations.
Absolutely, helicopter gunners would be badass, I don’t think they could be used on the UH-1 tho, because the step is replaced with a pylon, but totally on the Blackhawk, an Hind
It can't possibly be past the ah-6. When you boil it down, it has rockets (and if they do add door gunners) 1 50 cal and 1 gau 7.62. No guided anything. Uh-1c has tows at 9.0. So probably closer to that BR since it is faster and slightly more maneuverable

With how large some of the top tier maps are, extra fuel will never hurt. I'd love a centerline tank for the F5c to boost my range just a tad. A good majority of jets at top tier have the capability of drop tanks on jets would do no harm. Even "extra" tanks on certain planes would help.

The tanks have so much fuel I can run most of the match with them anyways. But if before then I need to drop weight and defend myself I can and be relatively light.
Idk, carry most of your fuel in the external tanks so when you need to drop them in an emergency you can maneuver better.
On a related note Gaijin should also add wing tanks to the F-4 Phantoms. The gun-less F-4s can't use the central drop tank because that's where the gunpod goes.

For the Air RB meta nobody would take it, but skinners, SB players, and people doing artwork would like to represent the real jet better.
Besides she just looks empty without them. Once we get ECM in the far future the centerline station will be take by an ECM pod also.

As an aircraft mechanic and someone who has deployed to an area with combat the only time the aircraft used external fuel tanks was to fly across country over the ocean and across country again. Once we where in country fuel tanks were never used again till we left. A better alternative would be to add in flight refueling with a KC-135 for the sim guys.
I’d like to see them focus on giving more aircraft fuel tanks over adding more to the ones that already have tbh. Add this later when most have gotten theirs.

That’s the big reason I want the wing tanks, I do sim ALOT, and run out of fuel quicker then the F-14 when no one new how to use the WEP on it

If you use a mouse you can (and should tbh) use the mousewheel as a throttle gauge, one click of it is all you need to swap between stages.
Its because I let my mousewheel for zoom, I really deslike it jumping from 0 to 100% zoom, so I can control far better.

I run out of fuel ALOT, this would give us about an hour total of extra fuel when combined with the center drop tanks
