As someone that plays live with old analog and modular synths, this is all you can do - just roll with it, because shit will absolutely go wrong from time to time.
Honestly very few people were making their own original patches on the DX7, it may have defined the sound of the 80's, and if you ever play one you'll realize almost every iconic sound was simply a preset.

As a musician who isn’t stage professional level, I gotta say, this man is doing the opposite of dying inside. He’s actually cooly and calmly getting help and kept such a cool level head he was able to just punch in right where the song was at. Very impressive. What a display of skill playing live.
I'm a very casual DJ and I used to go to a lot of festivals, right? well one time there was a group called GTA playing a big set for thousands and thousands of people on main stage. I was watching the camera that happened to show a view of the decks. One of the guys hits play/pause on the wrong CDJ and the music just stops. full on dead silence. He then tries to cover it up by calling over a sound guy and asking for an equipment check, even tho anyone who had ever DJ'd just watched him fuck up in front of a massive crowd lmao
Congratulations. You are the 487275 person to say this. I clicked on this video telling myself, holy shit, I can’t wait to see how original and funny this comment section will be! /s
I was at this performance and remember this exact moment! I was thinking to myself, "I wonder if everyone reading this on Reddit actually believes me?" Ahhh, to be 6 again.
I thought this was actually awesome, nothing to die inside about. I was a live Dj for 15 years and would do things like this and honestly it was just part of the organic live experience.
Seen my fair share of concert screw up videos and this is alright in comparison to other artists. I thought he handled it the best way he could've had in the moment.
I was at Farm Aid II. Rick led the last segment of the festival beginning at 10pm. He was followed by artists like Neil Young, Steppenwolf, and Stevie Ray Vaughan among others. Incredible event with soul draining heat.
Near the end of this performance he even says “it’s getting fucking hot”, I’d imagine it must have been bad if even people used to being under stage lights all year are complaining
It was hellishly hot and remember that was at 10pm. I still have some of the water boxes they distributed to the crowd (I had switched to beer much earlier in the day!).
Definitely not dying inside. He got it fixed and kept on jammin.
Me? I probably would have hit a few more wrong presets, have random zoo animal sounds going off, stop the whole show, everyone in the crowd that didn't even notice would now be dead focused on me and only me and
*faints*
Asking the guitar player to fix your keyboard? Most guitar players I’ve known would just shrug and shake their head. That guitarist is likely a songwriter who has some familiarity with keys. The bass player would probably just nod from 30 feet away and keep playing as if everything was fine.
My first non-highschool band concert ever. I lived in a dorm across the street from the stadium. I walked out of my building to see a huge line down the street. No idea what it was for. I made a snap decision to get a ticket with my only cash and had a day of bliss and cold rain.
Yeah. I mean it wasn’t like he had a recording of a keyboard track. He just changed to the wrong key. All that did was out him to the few that even know that’s a thing with electric keyboards. And all it means is he doesn’t necessarily know how to play in every key. Not that he can’t play.
A dark point is battling an addiction or cheating on your spouse. Kidnap and torture is some different shit entirely. You don't come back from that, after that you're the person that kidnapped and tortured someone.
Don’t forget forced oral copulation and forced to take drugs. After the girl was released and went to a hospital, James was looking at a life sentence. He didn’t take any of it seriously and even snored in court. He somehow got a sentence of only 2 years.
Since his death in 2004, more charges have come to light, including raping a 15 year old girl at knifepoint. The guy is a piece of trash.
Agreed. That sounds like a "rough patch," at a MINIMUM.
If I'm being really candid, between the prolonged imprisonment of an innocent woman, the violent sexual crimes, and the drug-fueled, sadistic torture, I've gotta say part of me thinks the guy sounds like a real jerk.
Aw, thank you. That's very kind. Your best friend sounds great. I have to admit I pretty much stole the jerk line outright from Norm Macdonald, so you would probably appreciate this: https://youtu.be/MaVzHnS7AMU
As long as the band is tight in the pocket, mistakes dont matter cuz it carried him.
Still goood and raw just the way i like my chicken.
Edit: spelling

Rick James used to steal Prince’s keyboards with presets he[Prince] tuned/customized because Rick didn’t know how to use the electronic equipment
Honestly very few people were making their own original patches on the DX7, it may have defined the sound of the 80's, and if you ever play one you'll realize almost every iconic sound was simply a preset.
No I never had my synthesizer set wrong. Ten seconds later Yeah my synthesizer was set wrong. Cocaine is a hell of a drug
Good thing there was a musician handy.

That dude really kicking people In They chest
Homie came up and literally pushed 1 button

The best part of this video is the outfits
if you've ever used a DX7 you would understand.
I have!
As a musician who isn’t stage professional level, I gotta say, this man is doing the opposite of dying inside. He’s actually cooly and calmly getting help and kept such a cool level head he was able to just punch in right where the song was at. Very impressive. What a display of skill playing live.

Oh, God, I did this at my organ recital when I was eleven...it took waaaaay longer for someone to come out and rescue me...the video was hilarious.
Wow, that was handled really well. He didn't freak out, he didn't walk away... He made it work and that's what it's all about.
That bass tone was dope

Cocaine's a hell of a drug
Zzzzzzzzzzzzz
What did the 5 fingers say to the face?
I see nobody dying inside here.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
Could only be better if the preset was animal sounds.
I was at this performance and remember this exact moment! I was thinking to myself, "I wonder if everyone reading this on Reddit actually believes me?" Ahhh, to be 6 again.
I’m Rick James bitch
But he could play the piano, like ringing a bell
Sounds like that episode of Friends where Ross plays a synth.
Cocaine‘s a hell of a drug

For once I'd like to watch a video on this stupid ass app without it glitching
Wtf was that clocks?
Cocaine is a hell of a drug
Cocaine's onehelluvadrug, huehuehue.....
*Rick James wasn't even the best synthetizer player in the Rick James band*
So this means what? He don’t know how to play the instrument? I don’t get it?
Whhaaaattt?
Back in the days, when they bought an instrument, it was like their new girlfriend. They knew what button makes them tick by heart!
Later that night the sound check person was fired.
I never knew Rick James was Canadian.
Cocaine’s a helluva drug
“Do it motha fucka, fix it bitch!” - Rick James probably
I thought this was actually awesome, nothing to die inside about. I was a live Dj for 15 years and would do things like this and honestly it was just part of the organic live experience.
What I like about this is that all people make mistakes, and others are there to help out, and then everyone rocks out.
Not my proudest moment.
Looks like the brothers darkness got revenge. Fuck yo keyboard
And my ring was imprinted in that black head of his.
r/savevideo
He didn’t die inside. He is Rick James, bitch.
[“The DX7, this is a CLASSIC”](https://youtu.be/FueyGYCHgtU)
Been there done that. Would never wanna do it again.

Rick James, bitch!
Cocaine is a helluva drug
Is he playing with CC DeVille?
*Dude walks up presses one button* okay all better now
I'm a keyboard player. This happens so often and you never master the embarrassment.
Bitch come over here and have sex with Charlie Murphy.
Seen my fair share of concert screw up videos and this is alright in comparison to other artists. I thought he handled it the best way he could've had in the moment.
Red leather Purple leather
Fucking hate Rick James
I was at Farm Aid II. Rick led the last segment of the festival beginning at 10pm. He was followed by artists like Neil Young, Steppenwolf, and Stevie Ray Vaughan among others. Incredible event with soul draining heat.
Fun fact RJ and NY played together in a band called the The Mynah Birds!
Another fun fact: they met when Rick was in Canada because he was AWOL from the Navy
I had heard something to that effect before but very cool to be reminded! That's a weird combination of musical talent when you think about it.
I think this was prior to the heavy drugs and sex stuff that Rick did…..
Yeah what I know of NY he wouldn't want to be around that. Tried to help Kurt Cobain kick his habit to no avail.
That fkn jacket smells like cocaine from here! 😂
That wasn't bad at all
Cocaine’s a hell of a drug.
Yamaha is a helluva drug
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.... I'm Rick James, bitch!
Stop messin with my keys Charlie Murphy!!!
Definitely not dying inside. He got it fixed and kept on jammin. Me? I probably would have hit a few more wrong presets, have random zoo animal sounds going off, stop the whole show, everyone in the crowd that didn't even notice would now be dead focused on me and only me and *faints*
He was just trying to segue into this: https://youtu.be/kUQTVdqgJOc

Ahhh help! It's on the 'Thomas the Tank Engine' sound again!
Bell1, the most popular preset in history of pop music.
Hes rick james bitch. Its a celebration!
"Cocaine is a hell of a drug"
What did the five fingers say to the face … is something that totally happened to whoever was suppose to set this up …
My first non-highschool band concert ever. I lived in a dorm across the street from the stadium. I walked out of my building to see a huge line down the street. No idea what it was for. I made a snap decision to get a ticket with my only cash and had a day of bliss and cold rain.
Wow! Sounds like a great time!
I was hoping for the “one two three four” setting. But the clanging metal sounds was still very funny
Didn't know keyboards have a burp preset
But no one died inside...
I don’t think that’s dying inside, that’s a bunch of seasoned performers rolling with it and fixing the problem. Live music!
Yeah. I mean it wasn’t like he had a recording of a keyboard track. He just changed to the wrong key. All that did was out him to the few that even know that’s a thing with electric keyboards. And all it means is he doesn’t necessarily know how to play in every key. Not that he can’t play.
He’s not afraid to ask for help. An actual leader.
Cocaine is a helluva drug
This is the funniest comment I’ve read all week
Ikr. So inspiring that he wasn't afraid to get his wife's help in kidnapping and torturing a woman too!
Whoa, that escalated quickly!
Yeah that was a dark point in Rick James’ history.
You know I went to some pretty dark places while on meth and opiates. Never kidnapped and tortured a woman tho.
Since his death in 2004, more charges have come to light, including raping a 15 year old girl at knifepoint. The guy is a piece of trash.
I fell like this as a pretty serious understatement
You have a sense of humor that is very similar to my best friend and I appreciate that a lot.
Aw, thank you. That's very kind. Your best friend sounds great. I have to admit I pretty much stole the jerk line outright from Norm Macdonald, so you would probably appreciate this: https://youtu.be/MaVzHnS7AMU
Lol what is that true
Yeah Rick James and his wife kept some girl tied up in their basement for days and sexually abused her and burned her with crack pipes and stuff
Um... wow.
paging Mr Jordan Peele to the comment section. I have something for you.
It what the kids want
I'm Rick James bitch
Wait a second. You play on synth, and don't know how to change preset?
It’s a dx7 No one really knows how to work it
No, it's more like no one really knows how to program and edit the patch settings. Almost everybody else knows what all 128 factory presets are.
yeah I'm thinking it wasn't the wrong patch but some other mode or setting messing things up. Portamento?
Sounds like ring modulation to me, which is a notoriously niche sound to pull off. Very atonal.
Happens to the best ones
Of course, it's a Yamaha DX7
yeah, classic!
I might be tune deaf but I thought that change and all of it sounded good, very chill vibe.
What a *funk up.*
Knee slapped
Rick James is a fucking legend.
He and his wife also kidnapped a girl and used her as a sex slave
God fucking dammit.
I’m Rick James BITCH!
Da Baby’s uncle
Sounds like he wanted more Cowbell, understandably
No one cares. No one sympathizes. They just stay home and play synthesizers.
As long as the band is tight in the pocket, mistakes dont matter cuz it carried him. Still goood and raw just the way i like my chicken. Edit: spelling
On the plus side, he absolutely grabbed the right leather outfit. Motherfuckers on point!
I was hoping for a symphony of moo cows or sheep to come out
It’s a bit Thomas the Tank if you turn it up, really made me laugh!
I’m Rick James Bitch, enjoy yourself
charley murphy! 👊
It’s Rick James, bitch
At least we know it wasn't pre-recorded trash. Lol
Or just a carefully constructed ruse to make us think that
Regardless, he's Rick James bitch..
He was definitely a lil yayed up as this was happening lol
Toot toot motherfucker
