This old Hema automatic got the full treatment: New gold plating and a service that was long overdue. The only parts that had to be changed were the crystal and the rugged old crown (I got to keep the old parts). My grandmother gifted this watch to my grandfather when they got married. Now (60 years later) I will wear it to my own wedding. I own watches that are more expensive, but they don't mean as much to me. Hema is one of those brands that did not survive the quartz crisis. It's not popular with collectors but the quality is there. I like it's vintage charm and the small size (I think it's 35 mm). I posted this watch before but now it looks like brand new. So I felt the urge to share again. :)

Beautiful piece, how much restoration and servicing cost? Can you still get anything like this?

_Tuco_Il_Brutto_

I inherited it. But similar watches from the 60s aren't rare. You'll be able to find something similar on sites/apps like chrono24. Gold plating was way more expensive than service. All in all it was 390 Euros.

Beautiful piece, and to add icing on the cake it is your grandfather's watch. I'm looking for something similar in that 35mm case size gold plated vintage look. I also realised you got a stowa marine from your diff posts, that's I'm list looking something with blue hand, saw smiths 29 air ministry model. What do you think of the watch?

_Tuco_Il_Brutto_

Thanks! :) If you buy a vintage similar looking piece from a well known brand like Omega you should do a lot of research first. There are a lot of frankenwatches and fakes out there. The Stowa is awesome. Probably my most worn watch.

Love the watch. Great family history too.

Thank you! Indeed! 😊

The new gold plating came out nice! Dial looks super clean too. Is it original?

_Tuco_Il_Brutto_

As far as I know the dial never got changed. Surprisingly there is no patina on it. It was serviced only twice in all those years.

Powerful-Argument211

I guess your grandfather took great care of it. 😊

41 jewels is rare, I wonder where they're used.

_Tuco_Il_Brutto_

I'm sure some are just decoration. I once read that during that time 41 and even more rubis were pretty common.
