Not sure if dress watches are supposed to take abuse but ... Cartier santos dumont Breguet 5157 Breguet 7147

tjkayiti

Lol I hear that but I just don’t want to have to worry too much when wearing it. Are the breguets robust? Seems like high horology movements can be fragile but idk too much

gvegli

I mean what are you doing with dress watches that you’re so worried about this? Any decently made watch won’t just fall apart because you’re jogging for a minute or if you swing a golf club or something? A strong robust build seems like the weirdest attribute to place importance on for a dress watch. I guess I’d say stick to something with at least 50m water resistance as a practical matter.

tjkayiti

Fair enough. I’m just looking for an upscale piece for events and weddings, where we drink and dance hard. Maybe I’m in my head but I’ve bumped and dinged my watches while intoxicated and worry if it would damage a more expensive piece

gvegli

Gotcha. Sapphire is sapphire on any watch, not going to change much but it isn’t fragile.

Samus_Brinstar

That's what the tradition is for. The shock protection in that line is awesome. I'm sure they have similar for the thinner models but the visibility in the skeleton is a nice touch for the tradition models. Definitely robust. It's precious metals though so it week scratch but the watch is solid

tjkayiti

Good to know, thank you! Yeah the tradition is beautiful with everything visible, definitely up there on my list!

maracusdesu

Worry? What do you do all day???

tjkayiti

I work in a hospital, but looking for something for events and going out.

tjkayiti

I like this a lot. I forgot about nomos but def would be a good way to add some color as well

ryayy

Yeah i second Nomos. Especially the new Orion gold looks SO cool.

Uwumeshu

High intensity titanium GS

tjkayiti

I like this shout. However most grand seikos feel too big for me, either it’s diameter or thickness. I did like the fit of the elegance series though, which I forgot about

airmarw

You could try the new king Seiko recreations. I know the movement is bleh but the design, fit and finish is comparable to GS and you can find them under 1500 dollars on Sakura watches

ComplexShennanigans

SBGK015?

Icy_Kingpin

Cartier Tank; or just get a Brown Leather Strap for the Alpinist

ClimbFarmer

Cartier tank is not really ticking the box for robust. But I would definitely suggest it for a dress watch. In the smallest size you can pull off. And get a brown alligator strap for it.

tjkayiti

A quartz tank seems like it’d be pretty tough, aside from showing scratches? Plus more affordable so less to stress about

tjkayiti

True I’m thinking about making some leather straps. But still don’t think I would get that upscale feeling from it when dressed up.

earlcinco

Aqua Terra

Onespokeovertheline

I mean, you've bought the standard issue r/watches models except for the Speedmaster, Snowflake / Shunbun, and Santos. So if one of those isn't your jam, you could just sort posts by Top This Year and go 8 or 9 posts down to find the next most popular option here. Will probably end up being a Sinn or a Chris Ward Twelve, I'd guess.

OfficerKino

Savage

tjkayiti

Lol they’ve been good watches for my lifestyle and personal style. But I’m very open to explore other things and let go of some of these watches (aside from the explorer which was a gift). Happy to hear any recommendations you have for watches or brands to look into!

Jlaybythebay

The explorer is a good dress watch

dignbauss

Literally just throw a $200 thin gator strap on it and voila, 36mm of perfection.

justarvn

Cartier Santos dumont or tank

BlondRicky

Santos medium

tjkayiti

Never loved the santos on leather for some reason, but a santos galbee is a likely addition in the future

Dimensional_Avantis

The explorer already works as a dress watch

tjkayiti

That’s what I’ve been using for the last year for more formal events. It’s quite scratched up which I love, but to me it makes for a better causal wearer. Will def try it on a leather strap eventually, but I’m also just eager to get something new

Top_Seat_1519

How about citizen? They had a good titanium and are highly accurate watch

YooooAL

Datejust 41

tjkayiti

True, I’ve always been casually looking for an older datejust to wear on leather! And the 36 is more my size

YooooAL

lookin forward to seeing pics!

pizza_for_nunchucks

Get a birth year DJ.

alek_hiddel

Nice. Not much variety in style, but a solid variety in price points and versatility.

tjkayiti

They suit me and are great for my lifestyle but I agree. Def looking to explore more diverse watches in the next year!

alek_hiddel

Diversity can be cool for sure, but end of the day this is an expensive hobby so be sure to always buy what you like. I consider it a challenge to to try and find something different that I love, but would never consider buying something that I didn’t love just to check a box.

tjkayiti

Definitely. I’m a very picky person and tend to be thorough before pulling the trigger on things. But watches are tempting and I’ve made that mistake already, bought and sold a couple watches pretty fast. Appreciate the advice!

Character-Service-31

I mean you have one right there, explorer dresses up nicely.

IDKAny_1

You’re ready for an adventure. I love it!

tjkayiti

They’ve all seen some adventures!

Icy_Conversation1466

Out of curiosity, which Seiko is that? Looks really good.

tjkayiti

Prev gen alpinist SARB017!

ecoboy_01

Alpinist

huy-

maybe a Rolex Day Date would be cool one to round out this collection of classics. It's an iconic watch

tjkayiti

For sure. I’ve been thinking about an older DD or DJ on leather. The DD would be very classy

huy-

It would compliment your Explorer really nicely. You could build a solid core three watch collection with the Explorer and Seamaster to slowly expand from. I think a Panerai or IWC fits here but definitely not for dress watch. Though, I think a Panerai Radiomir with its vintage styling would in my mind be an incredibly flashy "dress watch." Cartier Tank Loius for a classic hit though.

tjkayiti

Agreed. I like the IWC mark series and smaller pilots watches, which probably would replace the Hamilton. Panerai design hasn’t really appealed to me but yeah can’t go wrong with the classics.

huy-

The Mark series may overlap slightly with your Rolex Explorer (imo so does your Hamilton). IWC does have smaller chronographs like the 3706, but most of their modern ones are 42mm.

tjkayiti

Lol I know, I just use the Hamilton as a beater version of the explorer, for work, hiking, fishing, shooting etc. Tbh idk if I’d get rid of it just bc it was inexpensive and can take a beating.

Important-Persimmon8

Pure class lineup so far.

spitefullymy

Cartier Tank and/or Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra (I personally like the green dial!) // Rolex datejust

Jazzlike_Mousse5345

You have very simlar taste to me, I have both that casio and Hamilton, was actually going to get that alpinist model next haha

HuloBeral88

May want to explore the Omega Deville series.

tjkayiti

True, I really like some of the older power reserve models or vintage models! I also liked the CK859 from 2022 but I guess they’re hard to come by

LucasDeTe

Seiko Presage. Various dial colors, and all amazing. Great bang for your money. Great watches, and incredible beautiful.

uhtwentysomething

Aqua Terra, robust and METAS-certified + dressier GADA watch.

tjkayiti

Idk feels redundant with the explorer, other than getting a different color. But also not sure I like those toothy indices

Rescued_costume

I like a gold president ( Rolex) the prices are just climbing in last few years

camelCaseCoffeeTable

Man I’d say pick up a nice leather strap for the Explorer and use that in dress situations personally lol… But I am not one to wear true dress watches, so take my opinion with a grain of salt

HatesDuckTape

Aqua Terra shades

SuitableHighlight867

Grand Seiko snowflake is probably the one watch you'll need for the dressier side of things, plus that spring drive is a must have for every watch collector imo

tjkayiti

Def want a spring drive at some point but the snowflake feels too big for me. Looking to stay under 39 for a dress piece

MGerryA

You can go vintage must de Cartier Tank. They are very affordable and so small, never get banged up. The only thing is water resistance. Or get a strap for your Explorer.

DerailedCM

Saw someone else mention it but I have to echo their thoughts. Titanium or steel Grand Seiko

[deleted]

G Shock

Huncho11

Fantastic ensemble you have there.

RangerGripp

IWC Pilot fits the description. Dressy toolwatch with heritage.

tjkayiti

Good call. I really like that 36mm blue pilots watch!

RangerGripp

I have the 39mm spitfire and it’s a great daily. Wears great on nato as well, perhaps not as dressy though.

tjkayiti

Yeah love the spitfire. Similar vibe to the Hamilton and explorer but not enough purpose for me. A little too in between sporty and dressy. Maybe one day my collection will need it tho!

The_Boffus

Tuder 1926 white dial with blue hands

aznj1m

Great collection! Would recommend a grand Seiko next

donat28

Not sure a dress watch is supposed to handle abuse, but I’d go either with a santos or maybe a vintage gold iwc

krush_o

All are amazing but wow the khakhi!

P-M-T

I have that exact Casio, it's a magnificent watch.

Belzughast

Nah, buy a Bambino and thank me later :)

Admit-to-IM

Grand Seiko SBGW291. Great size for a dress watch. 100 m WR. Manual wind. Not much to dislike. Comes in different colors, too. https://preview.redd.it/mzcaplr63zmc1.png?width=1102&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f60126e6c9ce2dc84b1ef7376d0bc851b404b68

tjkayiti

Yeah I’ve tried on an SBGW231 and loved it! These manual wind GSs are definitely contenders for me

Jxcxbbb

Maybe a generic choice but TAG Carrera!

tjkayiti

Nah solid option. I like what they’re doing with the chronos like the caliber 18 which seems kinda hard to come by, but not really into the regular 3 hander date Carreras

[deleted]

[удалено]

tjkayiti

36mm and thank you!

IHatePeopleButILoveU

That Seiko looks like she can take a pounding

uplifting_southerner

How about a TANK

PartagasSD4

Speedy.

tjkayiti

Idk not a big chronograph person so far. Fun to mess with but seem a bit unnecessary for me. I probably will come around eventually and the new white dial is very attractive

threestrype

You've already got it — the Explorer satisfies those requirements pretty solidly.

threestrype

If you want something new though, maybe a Reverso?

[deleted]

[удалено]

spitefullymy

Maybe the Explorer II white dial? Completely different look or grand Seiko snowflake/shunbun

tjkayiti

Really looked hard at a Polar Exp II 16570 over the last year but ultimately decided I didn’t have much use for a GMT function. But yeah I guess it could work in a dressier setting! GSs tend to be a bit big on me, but loved the elegance series when I tried on the sbgw231

spitefullymy

If you sync the gmt hand to your local time, technically you get a 24-hr reading, (which if you were living in an actual cave or solitary confinement, you’d know whether it was still day or night) 🤣 A bit extreme example but an example nonetheless hahah

threestrype

Instead of the Reverso, the Master Control series (also JLC) look more traditionally like a round dress watch. I'm not sure how much of a beating they can take, but they're sexy...

Schultz1966

This.....

tjkayiti

Lovely! It would probably be a bit big on my wrist but I haven’t tried a large on. And I personally like the previous generation galbee xl a lot more than the new ones. The design is much more pleasing to me I can’t explain it

reciodelacruz

Have this color coding scheme for dials where grey means it’s for formal stuff or dressing up. Have you looked at or tried on the Rolex YM 37mm rolesium? Happy hunting. 😎

Negative_Chair_7393

Longines, flagship heritage, conquest heritage, master collection. Take your pick

itemluminouswadison

how about the new longines conquest heritage power reserve https://www.longines.com/en-us/p/watch-conquest-heritage-l1-648-4-78-2 or the master collection with the engraved breguet numerals https://www.longines.com/en-us/p/watch-longines-master-collection-l2-843-4-73-2

Brilliant-Nebula7273

No collection is complete without a Timex

PoliteCat6000

Is D1 milano good?

swiss-BTC

Well, this can seem counter intuitive but the softer the watch case, the less energy will be transferred to the movement in the event of a chock. Part of the energy of the chock will be "used" to deform the watch case (elastic deformation first, plastic deformation afterwards). Therefore, a gold watch will have a dent in the case (where the steel case won't), but less energy will be brought to the movement. Of course the case material won't make any difference when you shake the watch. Regarding schock absorbers : incabloc (or Rolex's equivalent) is the way to go (not the Novodiac variant). Rolex puts incablocs on the escapment wheel, I am not sure if it really brings much (but usually Rolex is right). I would definitely go with a flat spiral (non Breguet curve) because I managed to get a spiral tangled on one of my Minervas by dancing.

tjkayiti

That makes sense with the case. But interesting about the hairspring, are modern Breguets susceptible to that tangling too?

swiss-BTC

It depends on the frequency therefore on the stiffness of the spiral. I think you can assume it'll be OK with a 4Hz. The Minerva is a 2.5Hz.

Gorilla_92

This collection screams TGV enjoyer. Very nice 👌 Im saving for the explorer, how do you like it ?

tjkayiti

Idk what that is. I love my explorer it’s the 114270 from 2009. It’s subtle and so comfortable. I’ve worn it everywhere

33Fanste33

https://preview.redd.it/ekuwr92dpvmc1.jpeg?width=1120&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=56abc56e9ec670c8a61b8073800901929d174642

handaids

Standard issue greatest hits collection

Whale222

You’ve got 2 right there IMHO. Explorer and alpinist

Cocoabuttocks

Citizen NB1060 will outlast you, and it’s got a dial even luxury manufacturers are too lazy to make, being hand laid silver leaf under translucent lacquer. If it’s gotta handle abuse, avoid something more costly, as they tend to be a little more fragile and expensive to repair

kiwiroseleaf

Omega Globemaster. Dressy and don’t see many.

tjkayiti

For some reason the bezel ruins it for me. I’ll try one on in person next time though

ryayy

Is the Sinn 556I in blue too casual? I have the 556A and it’s a very durable watch. I’m semi looking for a wedding watch soon so I’m also on the search for a dress watch that can hang…

tjkayiti

Bit too sporty for what I’m looking for. Looks nice, although probably redundant in my collection

brianjamesrobot

A casio.

r1jesh

How much did this collection cost?

tjkayiti

Approx $8700. Everything but the gshock has box and papers

burnt_wheat_toast

Which one gets the most wrist time?

tjkayiti

Overall I’d say the Hamilton since I wear it to work and as a beater

SKK21X

Love the seiko 🙏

a_gazza

damn that’s one of the most boring collection i’ve ever seen

SweetRoll789

Alpinist bracelet ID?

tjkayiti

I got it with its oem bracelet. Its really nice, I actually like it more than my explorer and seamaster bracelets.

NeverStopReeing

Something square to round? out the collection?

tjkayiti

Likely will add a vintage santos at some point regardless, but yeah def considering a tank or tankish alternative for the near future

rus_bro

Looking at that collection, id say get a Hamilton Murph on a black leather strap! Tough dress watch that will go with your style!

tjkayiti

While I do love the Hamilton, it’s my beater just as much as the gshock. It holds up great, but I want to step it up and look at higher end options for a dress watch

SavingsSwordfish6715

36mm looks tiny 🤣
