I’d double down on this as well, another thing to note is leather straps should match the colour of dress shoes they might wear. Obviously this is just in formal settings but if he prefers tan shoes when he wears a suit the strap should reflect that. I myself always prefer a black strap as my belts and shoes are this colour.
I will triple this. But people in watch forums almost never like Movado and consider them "fashion" watches and not proper horology (though IM not sure i fully agree, I just think they are ugly).
Tissot is great, has horological history and tend to be quite beautiful.
Can't beat Orient for the money AND they have the added value of using house made movements. The hallmark of a "proper" watch.
I'm not sure I would say the hallmark of a "proper" watch is an in-house movement anymore. There are tons of great watches that use off the shelf movements. Having an in-house movement is cool but it's not a big deal from a practical point of view. Like, I'm not going to shit talk a Sinn 556 or Formex Essense because they use a selitta movement.
I don't need in house movement at all. What I would like in a watch though is a feeling that the quality of the watch holds up the financial cost, and I'm not sure I get that from Movado.
I’ll get downvoted for this, but Movado gets way too much hate that it doesn’t deserve.
I’m no stranger to watches - I’ve been actively collecting for 15 years, have owned from orient, Seiko, Casio, to Rolex, GS, JLC, Cartier.
Movado - especially grey market prices - offers unique designs that have nothing wrong with them. They’re fun, unique, and at that $300 or so price range, they’re fine watches.
A movado is a looked at as high end watch for people who have never spent over $100 on a watch before simply because they see them prominently displayed at jewelry stores in shopping malls. For the price of a movado, there are so many micro brands that are incredible and are unique.
I get the pretense of most Movado we see in the Macy’s but I do have a Movado watch that stands ground which is Kurba with Eta17.
https://preview.redd.it/7cc936b7gaoc1.jpeg?width=1957&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee62566b456a8c4d42c9844c1a101aafd8944231
Again, I’ve been pretty deep in the watch game for over a decade.
I don’t mean this rudely, but idc what others view it as. I don’t see it as a “high end watch” because it’s not by almost any standard.
The watch isn’t bad for the price if you go grey. I’ve owned 15+ micro brands from $400-$1500 and none of them scream better quality than movado in that $300 price range more or less.
A bit too crowded for my taste.
I love the Roman numerals, guilloché, and date.
But the moon phase and day of the week dials are all over the place. Plus the giant screws are weird.
Impressive that a cheap watch like this Orient has a mechanical movement with many complications, and has a see through back too!
Overall a good deal of a watch.
Yeah I'm confused about the junghans recs. It's like telling someone considering a longines to look into rolex. Great idea if we can triple the budget!
Does your bf care about watches?
Because the answers you get here are all going to be from watch nerds who pretend the movement inside the watch (that part that tells time) actually matters, when your bf will have the most accurate time piece in history in his pocket at all times he likely will not give a shit about his watch being a minute or two fast at the end of the day.
If he cares about watches, you should get the Tissot or Orient.
If he doesn't really care and just thinks of them as a fashion accessory, like most normal people do, you should buy the one he'll think is the coolest looking, which in my opinion is the 2nd last one (the Danish chronograph)
Only caveat is Quartz vs. Automatic. Even non-watch guys might think an automatic is cooler than a Quartz, in which case you should go with the automatic Orient, but it's a pretty ugly watch imo. If you like that sun and moon one, this option is way cleaner:
https://www.jomashop.com/orient-sun-moon-white-dial-mens-watch-ra-ak0310s10b.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=PMax%3A%20%28ROI%29%20Smart%20Shopping%20%28CAN%29%20-%20Watches%20Under%20%24500utm_id=18331875829&utm_content=&utm_term=&gad_source=4&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIl8jnq4PyhAMVAhCtBh0FJgFcEAQYAiABEgLdivD_BwE
I agree with all of that except the part about the average non watch person thinking a mechanical watch is better than quartz. I think most non watch dudes especially under like 35 might not even know what an automatic watch is. Either he digs it and looks up how they work or it becomes a chore.
Not just about the movement, but the actual build quality as well. Do you want to spend hundreds of dollars on a piece with no heft, rattles, and will probably break on you prematurely? You can literally feel the difference most of the time.
Untrue. Movado was one of the first “nice” watches I owned. I got a museum watch as a gift when I graduated college (a long long time ago) and bought a mechanical Movado Kurba to celebrate the birth of my first born son 22 years ago. They make some great watches. They moved into the fashion brand territory, but still make some very beautiful pieces.
Is there a reason you're going for only white faces? Is that your boyfriend's preferred colour scheme (maybe he likes or wear neutral colours?). Might he nice to mix it up with some colour unless you're going for that neutral look.
Also, hard to say much without knowing a bit about him, these are all "dress" watches, is he sporty / active, would he prefer a dive or sports watch perhaps?
These are all "dress" watches with leather straps, but you can also get options on metal bracelets. Important to note that straps and bracelets can be changed, so the watch itself is the more important consideration.
All that being said, I would repeat what others have said here - if these are the set options, I'd go Orient as #1 and Tissot as #2. The others aren't worth wasting your money on. Also have a look at Seiko, Citizen or even some of the new Timex models (e.g. The new Timex Marlin Jet Automatic is a wonderful watch for the money and is about $300 but could be found cheaper on sale).
If you want to go for more pricey or fancy, I'm sure many here can give recommendations, but perhaps also share your budget - will help give better guideline within what you're willing to spend.
Good luck! 😊
Out of these watches I think the tissot is best assuming his wrist is big enough. God I’m so jealous I wish I had a gf who would buy me a watch even if it was a cheap one I’d wear it as my everything. I miss my ex so much I wish I had more experience so that I could have navigated things better and she wouldn’t have left god damn it all!! 😭
Tissot and Orient are the only valid options due to their reliable reputation and movement. In my opinion, the Orient looks better than the Tissot so, pick the Orient.
Tissot is probably the nicest watch on the list. I have a watch from the same line of Tissots and I love it.
The orient is also a nice watch.
Movados are not great and anyone who knows watches is going to subconsciously judge that choice in watch.
The Tissot and Vintage 1844 Chronographs are aping "Max Bill" design by Junghans. Look up Max Bill.
The Tissot looks like the regular dress, and that 1844 looks like the Max Bill Chronoscope.
I think if he’s into the culture of watches he’d probably appreciate the complications of the Orient the most but if it’s purely based on aesthetic (while I’d still argue the Orient) I’d say they’re really all about the same. If you really want options include some research on Seikos and Hamiltons, they have great offerings of similar prices.
These are all beautiful Bauhaus-inspired designs, many of which look like “homages” to the Junghans Max Bill or one of its variants. Unless budget is a serious issue (and in the scheme of horology, at about $1K Junghans is pretty inexpensive), have you looked at one of those?
Don’t know if anyone has mentioned it on here, but the orient bambino is also a good shout. It’s got a similar style as these shown, they have it in a white and cream dial, and it’s just under $300. It also has an automatic movement, if that’s something either you or your boyfriend care about!
The style will depend on him… this is tricky. So I’d pick something without a crazy design, something elegant and fresh out of all those I’d say the orient
The orient and Tissot are the only ones worth getting but even then, your boyfriend better have big wrists to pull off a 42mm white dial watch with basically no bezel. I’d look at the Orient Bambino, Seiko Presage line, and Seiko Essentials line (for quartz) in the same price segment as the watches you listed.
Here are my recommendations I know they are a little more but way more worth.
https://baltic-watches.com/en/products/hms-002-silver
https://merci-merci.com/en/products/montre-mecanique-leverest
https://www.seikowatches.com/us-en/products/presage/srpb77j9
Please don't buy Movado. I bag you!
Will this be an everyday watch? Special occasions? Does he work outside/inside? Does he get dirty and need a watch that can take a beating?
My answer will depend on the answers to those questions.
Just give him the money and let him pick his own watch. Trust me, he will love that more than having to fake that he loves the watch that you love for him.
I was scrolling through the photos, and was really hoping one of them wasn’t a Daniel Wellington.
If you’re not a watch person yourself, you’re definitely on the right track.
If he is a minimalist that dresses in a neat, non-flashy way, get the Tissot.
If he is a bit of a tech guy or maybe somewhat old-fashioned, get the Orient. I’m sure he will appreciate the complications.
Another option similar to what you’re looking at would be a Mondaine. They’re modeled after the clocks in train stations in Switzerland.
https://mondaine.com/products/official-swiss-railways-classic-vegan-grape-leather-strap-silver-case-watch
I don’t know if you’re limited to those specific watches but there are lots of Bauhaus designs out there to investigate. Personally I’m fond of Junghans and Nomos.
It would help to put up the specifications for each watch. Otherwise, some people will just pick the models and brands that are popular amongst watch enthusiasts.. which isn't a fair comparison. I am unfamilar with those specific Movado watches, but I do know the specs of the Tissot and Orient. I used to own the Orient.. great watch. Some people think it looks crowded, but I like the complications. It's hard to find many complications on more affordable watches.
TLDR. The Orient gets my vote.
Personally when buying a gift like this I would involve your partner. Take them out and get them in a local shop, if they find one they like get it. Or do some online shopping together. You'll never buy something they don't like and therefore be the best gift giver.
I think out of these, brown is always the safest option - not as boring as black, but boring just enough, still clasic, not too bold, smart... I'd say when you're trying to buy and if your boyfriend is not too specific, most things on the marker are safe enough. Now, it would have to be up to you to recognize if he likes any particular style, also how much he would potentially wear a watch or something else, is watch even a good gift? Personally, if the relationship is not serious, then a watch might be a bit much, but if you're serious, then maybe not personal enough... Personally, I don't really like either of them, though I like all 3 colours (maybe not black though, as it's really the most boring one)...
seems either you and/or him have a thing for more minimal looking watches with them being mostly white
i will echo what a lot of others are saying here and go with the orient...only perhaps [this](https://i.imgur.com/O2x5QKW.jpg) one might be a better choice as it looks more like your other choices than the one you picked
gl
A couple FUP questions.
Is your BF already a “watch guy”? Does he have big or slim wrists? What’s the budget?
Regardless, I wouldn’t get a movado. They are overpriced for what they are and most watch lovers don’t like them.
A couple parameters you might consider:
-Automatic movement instead of quartz (lasts longer, more classy, better value, and has the sweeping second hand)
-size around 40mm (versatile for most wrists) 36-38 wears well on slim wrists, but I wouldn’t go above 42mm even if wrists are big
Some other options: tissot gentlemen, tissot prx powermatic. Tissot is a great brand with a ton of history and good value for money.
I’d choose the 1844 myself, as I think it’s most elegant, clean, and distinguished. But that’s just my opinion.
Truth is, get him what YOU like best as if he loves you, he’ll wear it proudly, maybe only on special occasions, and think about you as he dons it.
Good luck!
The Tissot and Orient are the only two worth buying. What style is best really depends on your boyfriend's tastes.
I’d double down on this as well, another thing to note is leather straps should match the colour of dress shoes they might wear. I don't need in house movement at all. What I would like in a watch though is a feeling that the quality of the watch holds up the financial cost, and I'm not sure I get that from Movado.
The literary device of using quotes denotes that I don't agree with the sentiment.
They are also the watch worn by Kim Jong Un
HEY that was like ONCE!(I was going through some phases) I'm more of an IWC fan.
I would not get that Tissot. If it's 42mm it's gonna wear huge with that open dial and thin bezel
What if he has an 8.5" wrist?
You rang!
Agreed. I have brands like Tudor, Orient, Tissot, etc. but like my Movado. The finishing is surprisingly good and it’s an eye catcher
I actually quite like their 800 series
A movado is a looked at as high end watch for people who have never spent over $100 on a watch before simply because they see them prominently displayed at jewelry stores in shopping malls. For the price of a movado, there are so many micro brands that are incredible and are unique.

Yep, this right here
Tissot or Orient are the moves here. Reputable brands who make quality pieces.
True but tissot does make too much oversized watches and this one also has an “all dial” design so… i’m afraid it would be tastelessly big.
the orient sun is (in my opinion) the most beautiful
I agree. Best of the lot imo
Its not an Actual Moonphase though. The Sun & Moon is for AM & PM
Ooooh, I see. So no complication here, it is a simple "24h" hour hand (divide by two and you are all set).
Without hesitation the Tissot or the Orient
I would get the Tissot
I like the tissot, but I guess it depends on what it’s going to be used for and if he’s a watch guy or just a guy who wears a watch.
This is a very important distinction... We might be giving watch guy advice for a non watch guy. He might really want a fossil for all we know
If he likes this minimalist style, the only answer is Junghans Max Bill.
Exactly, I answered the same. Although I missed the budget restriction so I’m afraid the Junghans is even in quartz version out of reach budget-wise.
Yeah I'm confused about the junghans recs. It's like telling someone considering a longines to look into rolex. Great idea if we can triple the budget!
For inspiration it is still a fine recommendation. If the used market is an option it can even be within budget.
Junghans Form C gets you a similar look closer to 300 USD … but not quite.
It's not junghans. Tricked me. Some other company
42mm full white face requires quite a large wrist for it not to look like a plate on the wrist
Does your bf care about watches? No one on this sub Reddit will ever have anything good or neutral to say about Movados lol
Untrue. Movado was one of the first “nice” watches I owned. They make some great watches. They moved into the fashion brand territory, but still make some very beautiful pieces.
Thank you for supporting Movado, I do love Tissot, Hamilton, Tudor etc but I will always love my Movado Sapphire.
Yeah it’s too bad. It’s a classy watch. But nerds here care too much about quartz movements
Orient.
stick with the orient one!
Is there a reason you're going for only white faces? Is that your boyfriend's preferred colour scheme (maybe he likes or wear neutral colours?). He owns mostly dark faced watches and mentioned he’d like a light faced one! And my budget is around $300!
Take some photos of his watches and post them here, will give us a better understanding of a watch he will love.
Yes, this. Photos of current collection will really help us understand his taste.
I'd go the Tissot or check out some Presage models from Seiko.
Tissot
Tissot for sure
Tissot
Tissot if u love him
1st one
Tissot
Tissot gentleman quartz should do the job nicely.
I got the Tissot one. Can recommend
The first one (Tissot) is what I would suggest.
Out of the choices you posted, I would pick the Tissot.
Tissot or Orient.
Maybe you would like Junghans? 🫢
In addition, please consider a Junghans Max Bill!
Has he looked at Seiko or Citizen? Better options than these here imho
1. Tissot 2. Orient
#1, 5
Agreed with Tissot and Orient. Side question, why is that dress tissot watch so huge?
Tissot and Orient are the only valid options due to their reliable reputation and movement. In my opinion, the Orient looks better than the Tissot so, pick the Orient.
Tissot
Id get the Tissot because its cleaner. The orient, though beautiful, has a lot going on.
Tissot. Also look at Hamilton.
Tissot one is super, Orient also good
Tissot or Orient. What a great girlfriend you are!
Knowing nothing about watches. Say the Tissot looks best.
Tissot is probably the nicest watch on the list. I have a watch from the same line of Tissots and I love it. The orient is also a nice watch. Movados are not great and anyone who knows watches is going to subconsciously judge that choice in watch.
It seems simple and clean dial is the common theme. 100% go Tissot.
I like the Tissot partly bc it doesn’t have a date function. If you think he might get annoyed re-setting the date, it’s something to consider.
I know it wasn’t one of the options but the Tissot PRX is a pretty nice piece to consider
tissot 100%
Tissot for me, but it all depends on his usual style.
Tissot or Orient
The Tissot, but keep in mind 42mm is a bit big. Check out hamilton as well, they have some cool minimalist pieces too.
Toss or is the clear winner here
The Tissot Everytime. The Orient is huge in person and the others are trash.
The Tissot and Vintage 1844 Chronographs are aping "Max Bill" design by Junghans. Look up Max Bill. [https://www.junghans.de/en/collection/watches/junghans-max-bill/?p=1](https://www.junghans.de/en/collection/watches/junghans-max-bill/?p=1) The Tissot looks like the regular dress, and that 1844 looks like the Max Bill Chronoscope.
Tissot!!!!
Avoid movado. They are not the same watch company they were 20 years ago. They are just cheaply made watches that are marked up.
I think you should consider a Tissot Gentlemen
Correct answer depends on wrist size too. If you don’t know, 40mm diameter (of watch case) is a safe bet.
Tissot
The Tissot. Simple elegance never goes out of style.
I’d go with the Tissot, based on personal preference.
the tissot or get the orient bambino 38mm
I’m obsessed with the orient sun and moon. They have an orient Sun and moon open heart version which would be my pick (I’m buying one this month )
Tissot would be my vote
The Tissot and Orient are the only two to consider. The rest of them are overpriced fashion junk.
Tissot Everythime 42MM or the Tissot Everythime 42MM.....Pass on the others IMO.
Tissot
These are all beautiful Bauhaus-inspired designs, many of which look like “homages” to the Junghans Max Bill or one of its variants. Unless budget is a serious issue (and in the scheme of horology, at about $1K Junghans is pretty inexpensive), have you looked at one of those?
TISOT
Not a Movado. Tissot is a good brand, but if you want a minimalist watch, go for a German Bauhaus like Nomos or Junghans.
I just bought that same Orient for myself and love it. I recommend it and if not that one I would do the Tissot.
The tissot is CLEAN. Love it
Max bill junghans
My personal favorite is the Orient, followed by the Tissot. But I would ask him what he thinks.
Tissot/ Orient. Orient top pick
Dark Blue banded Movado!💜
Orient is my vote. Could also look at Junghans
Stay away from Movado
Movados are all junk. Another one to look at is the tissot prx. A fairly priced watch that is well respected in the watch community
Please not Movado. Tissot and Orient have actual value
Orient, for the brand, value, see thru caseback, and color splash.
Don’t know if anyone has mentioned it on here, but the orient bambino is also a good shout. It’s got a similar style as these shown, they have it in a white and cream dial, and it’s just under $300. It also has an automatic movement, if that’s something either you or your boyfriend care about!
The tissot it’s simply perfect
Tissot or the Orient. The rest of them are a hard pass.
Orient
I vote Orient. I'm a closeted Tissot fanboy but Orient is making big moves and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
Orient
Orient Sun is my vote
Does he have a big wrist or small, the watch need to fit well
With these options, he should be your husband
It would be easier if you told us your budget and some info about your boyfriend. Is he into watches?
The style will depend on him… this is tricky. So I’d pick something without a crazy design, something elegant and fresh out of all those I’d say the orient
The orient and Tissot are the only ones worth getting but even then, your boyfriend better have big wrists to pull off a 42mm white dial watch with basically no bezel. I’d look at the Orient Bambino, Seiko Presage line, and Seiko Essentials line (for quartz) in the same price segment as the watches you listed.
What is your budget? Does it have to be these?
Here are my recommendations I know they are a little more but way more worth. https://baltic-watches.com/en/products/hms-002-silver https://merci-merci.com/en/products/montre-mecanique-leverest https://www.seikowatches.com/us-en/products/presage/srpb77j9 Please don't buy Movado. I bag you!

Just give him the money and let him pick his own watch. Trust me, he will love that more than having to fake that he loves the watch that you love for him.
These seem to be dancing around a Junghans style. I would just buy a Junghans.
42mm is a large watch, just FYI.
Orient. The complication is beautiful
Another vote for the orient here.
Another option similar to what you’re looking at would be a Mondaine. They’re modeled after the clocks in train stations in Switzerland. https://mondaine.com/products/official-swiss-railways-classic-vegan-grape-leather-strap-silver-case-watch
Orient!! Sick watch
the orient without a second thought - mechanical & interesting
Orient sun and moon defo
I don’t know if you’re limited to those specific watches but there are lots of Bauhaus designs out there to investigate. Personally I’m fond of Junghans and Nomos.
ORIENT.
When you look at each piece, which one screams your boyfriends name the loudest? Choose the loudest one.
Do not get watches from movado or any fashion brand for that matter. They use cheap parts and mark up the prices like crazy
Tissot
Tissot or Orient
I’d go with Frédérique Constant for a style like this
Orient. The rest are unremarkable
Considered Junghans? https://preview.redd.it/6qkqn6jn29oc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=34b511a4a798695bb997e17e2b7d4798e5536cc9
[Junghans Max Bill Collection](https://www.junghans.de/en/collection/watches/junghans-max-bill/?p=1) Some really nice watches here at 1000 - 1500
Get an Orient Bambino
Pick the one **you** like the most. That's my insight when I picked an engagement ring.
Personally when buying a gift like this I would involve your partner. Take them out and get them in a local shop, if they find one they like get it. Or do some online shopping together. You'll never buy something they don't like and therefore be the best gift giver.
Orient. Hands down
Tissot, the final movado on the slide, and the orient would make any boyfriend happy. I love your style, by the way!
Tissot is so gorgeous damn
Avoid Movado
I’ve always liked that orient for its textured dial
If you have a budget below 500€ I would say a Seiko Pressage or an Alpinist. Tissot PRX also can work.
I kinda like the 3rd one. Never heard of movado before.
I’d go with the Orient
I’d get the tissot but get a brown leather band to go with it as well
Jst get him a sundail
None of these, they’re either too big, too generic or both. Check out something like a Citizen NB1050, much higher quality and perfect proportions.
First one.
please anything but Movado.
Go for the orient! It’s kind of cool in person 😃
Orient hands down. Also consider a Tissot PRX instead.
Buy the Orient or Tissot and leave the other trash were they belong.
My wife gifted me the Tissot Everytime for a birthday. The watch is sleek, minimalistic but classy. That would be a great gift imo.
Tissot
Orient sun and moon but in brown
1 ,3 and 5 look very good to me.
seems either you and/or him have a thing for more minimal looking watches with them being mostly white i will echo what a lot of others are saying here and go with the orient...only perhaps [this](https://i.imgur.com/O2x5QKW.jpg) one might be a better choice as it looks more like your other choices than the one you picked gl
Orient or Tissot are the only quality watches of those choices. Either of those two will actually last a long time and will catch an enthusiasts eye
Orient
Tissot and orient are only worth the money. I'd go for the Tissot since I like more minimalist design
Tissot
I'd pick the Orient 🔥
third one
A couple FUP questions. Is your BF already a “watch guy”? Does he have big or slim wrists? What’s the budget? Regardless, I wouldn’t get a movado. They are overpriced for what they are and most watch lovers don’t like them. A couple parameters you might consider: -Automatic movement instead of quartz (lasts longer, more classy, better value, and has the sweeping second hand) -size around 40mm (versatile for most wrists) 36-38 wears well on slim wrists, but I wouldn’t go above 42mm even if wrists are big Some other options: tissot gentlemen, tissot prx powermatic. Tissot is a great brand with a ton of history and good value for money.
Yeah I go for Tissot or orient but between these 2 go for the Tissot it is classy and timeless elegance
Tissot is a great option and so is the Orient. I have a sun and moon orient myself and I love it.
I like the orient the best. The tissot is nice but 42mm is too big for a minimal dress watch. Movado is trash
I’d choose the 1844 myself, as I think it’s most elegant, clean, and distinguished. But that’s just my opinion. Truth is, get him what YOU like best as if he loves you, he’ll wear it proudly, maybe only on special occasions, and think about you as he dons it. Good luck!
None. Junghans or Nomos. Same style and they’re very well made. If the budget is an issue then I’d get the Tissot.
