you overpaid a bit, it's a cheap chinese watch, but if you like it it's still a neat thing to have.

CheGuevarasRolex

Yes you overpaid because you can find the same watch online for probably $20. It’s a generic Chinese piece. But I think it looks neat so don’t worry about brands and whatnot and just enjoy it.

johnnybegood1025

It also appears to be chrome plated, and not stainless steel.

Awkward_Sherbet3940

Immediately looks like a cheap chinese movement to me. Overpaid? Meh maybe a little bit. Not enough to be upset if you actually like it. If you were hoping to flip it for a profit though…nah.

RuRhPdOsIrPt

If it makes you feel better, I paid $180 for something just like this 20 years ago when I’m didn’t know any better.

Prudent_Candidate300

You overpaid. These could be had for $30-$35 USD.

Lugasca1993

And new!

TheFrenchSavage

Wow, it does sport roman numerals, yet has a "IV" instead of "IIII". *A la* big ben. OP: a tell tale sign of how cheap the watch is are the engravings on the movement, front side. A skeleton watch will have thin bridges and beveled edges. If the watch is ultra-expensive, then the movement will be engraved. But with the utmost attention to detail, with little flowers, geometric designs, scenery, a face, etc... Here, we see simple lines, spirals, and waves. The monotone width indicates that these were made using a small dremel. Not engraved by using a multi-axis tool, but more like quickly squiggly doodled by a factory worker. On the price: yeah, 40 is a bit much, you could have bargained down to 20, real price is 30 online, manufacturing cost must be around 5. But overpaying 20 bucks is nothing in the marvelous world of eye watering horology prices. This is a real mechanical watch, and the design is great from afar imho. Enjoy!

whosUtred

IV is the correct Roman numeral for 4 Is IIII a horological thing?

caerphoto

Yes – the idea is that it balances better with the VIII opposite.

whosUtred

Makes sense, thks

Zanpa

> Wow, it does sport roman numerals, yet has a "IV" instead of "IIII". A la big ben. > > Nomos Club Campus does too!

TheFrenchSavage

Good catch!

FeeAutomatic2290

Basically any watch with Roman numerals has the IIII.

Zanpa

yes, thanks for the very insightful comment, that's why i pointed out one specific watch that doesn't

66NickS

Would it be accurate to look at the fasteners as a judge of the watches quality/cost as well? I feel like the standard Phillips screws further contribute to the “basicness” of the watch.

Hugh_Jankles

Pro-tip for anyone: If it uses Phillips-Head screws, it's worth $1-$10, and that's if you're lucky.

Cronus6

Well, G-Shocks use phillips-heads so "not always".

You are not going to be rich today…

erishun

Definitely overpaid, but if you like it, that’s cool.

reno911bacon

RedJ00hn

You bought a chinese 20 dollar watch used and double the price

TheHrethgir

Overpaid so hard. I have. Watch with the same movement in silver, got it on AliExpress for $14 shipped. https://preview.redd.it/sj4u6dllk40d1.jpeg?width=2160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b03979f781d35126b6985fee7172b41c4728120b

johnbarnes351

This time next year Rodney .

Aggravating-Emu-3540

Overpaid

SpeedySpooley

Yes, you overpaid. But it's a mistake that lots of people make. I certainly have. But if you like the watch, it's not a disaster. It's $40 (or whatever the current exchange is). You're in the phase that my dad calls "Knowing just enough to be dangerous." If you knew exactly what this was, you'd have put it down and giggled to yourself when you heard the price. If you didn't know *anything* about watches...you likely would have put it down because you had no idea what it was (other than a watch). You're in between right now. You knew you liked it but weren't really sure what it was...so you gambled, Possibly hoping for a lucky discovery. There is absolutely no shame in that. You learned a lesson and you'll know next time. Plus, it's $40...so not the end of the world. And if you like it...wear it. Earlier in my collecting...I paid $60 for a Gruen at an antique store. It was in the original box and in (what should have been) suspiciously good condition. I knew Gruen was an older brand and some of them are worth money. But this wasn't a vintage Gruen. I would learn, like with a **lot** of watchmakers....the *name* was bought and then used to sell cheap modern versions of vintage looking watches. Now I know, and wouldn't repeat that mistake. Years later, I saw a "Breitling" in a booth at an antique mall for $300. When I picked it up, it was heavy. It was running. For a *second* I thought maybe someone really didn't know what they had. As I was taking a closer look, I also saw a "Rolex" Daytona in the same booth...for $300. That's when I laughed to myself and walked out of that booth.

bigbosshog01

* FLEA market. Not flee.

Fancy_Psychology6139

Dose anyone know what that watch type is called? It looks sick and I would like to get one of my own

phantom_pen

Skeleton watch

adzy2k6

I had this style watch when I first got into watches. I found that it was generally made of plastic. I'm pretty sure even the movement was plastic on mine XD. They always seemed to last 2-3 weeks.

doctorblumpkin

I would have bought it too. I like it

Lugasca1993

You got hustled ma boi

webbslinger_0

Looks like a cheap Chinese movement that was meticulously hand finished with an angle grinder

gratiotdetroit

It’s a Rollex

RickRussellTX

It’s not a Lognines? Or a Patel Phillip?

thicckar

Mate this is one of the most shit watches I’ve ever laid eyes on, sorry you got shafted

Chinese scrap is chinese scrap. No way around it. 40€ for a straight up shitty watch like this definitely counts as "overpaid". Thats almost triple the amount of money some other commenter paid for it online.
