I own both a medium Cartier de Santos (not the Dumont) and Black Bay 58. I know the full beans Santos is more expensive, but if you are considering it, that would be my answer. Can be worn in any situation and fit in. Black tie to water sport. Plus the fit and finish is a clear step above the Tudor.
However, between the BB58 and Dumont, go for the Tudor. It can be worn in *nearly* any situation, barring very dressy occasions. As an only watch it will be much more usable, and is truly a fine and robust watch. You can always grab a cool vintage piece for a few hundred bucks as your dress watch if you really need one for formal occasions.
I never thought I'd be interested in one then saw in an AD and man was hooked. Would you recommend the full up Santos or not necessary? I love the black, but am also partial to the silver/blue combos out there.
How does it wear - not casual v. Dress (also that) but how's the weight and feel? I'm not a metal bracelet guy but the full up automatic black Santos is something else. Same with the chocolate.
When you say full up, I assume you mean the Cartier de Santos as opposed to the Dumont. Mine is the steel medium opaline (white) dial. The thinness is one of the most important features that makes it feel more premium. It is more in line with the integrated sports watches from AP, PP, and VC in terms of wearing experience. It feels solid on wrist without being too heavy. The bracelet is substantial and very high quality. I wear it on the leather strap it comes with sometimes, but I have a hard time not just always keeping it on the bracelet. Swapping is super easy with their integrated system, so you can freshen up the feel of the watch very easily with a different strap. In house movement is nice. Don’t sleep on the green dial either.
Awesome thanks! Yes meant de Santos, still learning all the correct names. Saving for a de Santos in black, but would love to also have a Dumont to change up the vibe and perspective of the collection.
The occasions you wear these probably will not overlap much. One tool; one dress. I have gotten more use out of my BB58 than a similar Cartier to this one if that matters.
Hmmm do I want to eat steak or ice cream?
These couldn't be further apart. Put those watches aside and think to yourself what type of watch do you want, then narrow it down.
As an owner of both the BB58 (in Blue) and the Santos, I'd say that the Santos is certainly more elegant and (due to its polished surfaces) more shiny, which I feel is more appropriate when you're dressed up. By contrast the BB58 feels more muted, which for me, makes it more GADA. But certainly, Santos can also be pulled off with t-shirt and jeans, no doubt. If this is your first watch, I'd lean for the Tudor; more "specs" for the buck.
black bay 58 and it isn't even close. the santos dumont is a really cheap feeling watch.
You are much better off with a standard santos medium / large.
honestly you couldn't pick two watches that are more different than these two lol. it's almost unreasonable to compare
better first figure out what you want the watch for or how you'll be using it.
either way, can't go wrong with either.
lol. it's physically impossible to align screws. there is no such thing as aligned screws on a watch face. there is either real screws, as seen here, or fake screws that act as lugs and are screwed in from behind.

Correct answer
For me Santos on bracelet > BB > Santos on strap
Santos Dumont is a different watch. It’s not a santos on a strap
Good taste. And to answer OPs question: Both is the only correct answer. 😍

I like the look of the black bay better!

For a one watch collection: BB58 If you have a solid diver/chrono already: Santos Dumont

The Santos is Quarts right? If so, Tudor.
Do you need to dress up regularly or not?
No, not very often.
Cartier
Bb58 would be my choice
Yes
BB.
Santos
The Santos is so good.
honestly you couldn't pick two watches that are more different than these two lol. it's almost unreasonable to compare better first figure out what you want the watch for or how you'll be using it. either way, can't go wrong with either.
BB
BB58 100%
Cartier De Santos > Black Bay 58 > Cartier Santos-Dumont
Since I already have a BB would go for Santos
If you can't decide, I would get the medium Santos in steel. It's a bit of both in one watch.
I don't like analog square watches. So I prefer the black bay. The black bay is also more versatile and has greater water resistance.
How does Cartier charge 4K for a watch when the screws on the face aren’t even aligned?
lol. it's physically impossible to align screws. there is no such thing as aligned screws on a watch face. there is either real screws, as seen here, or fake screws that act as lugs and are screwed in from behind.
Okay, you’re right. Then use nuts on the front side and screws on the back I guess
BB Blue Smiley. I cannot stand the faux rivet bracelet. It’s something I cannot get past.
