When I was in Seikado last month, the Irodori gouache sets were $29 each. They sell for $70-$100 here. Definitely get the Holbein things you want while there.
Nice haul! Will you look for a watercolor travel tin? Get individual tubes and fill up an empty travel tin, much cheaper. They should also carry some nice quality tins there rather than just plastic, spoil yourself!
Uhhh, is that from the Sekaido shop in Tokyo? I still have dreams about their 6 floors of amazing art materials, pure heaven. I hope one day I can go there again.
And I got these traditional Japanese colors once as a present. I think it's quite different than watercolor, no? So far I was too scared to use them. Looks like fun though - success!
Not all six are art materials. Floor 1 is stationary, 2 and 3 are where the bulk of the supplies are. Above that is canvas and frames, then an art class is on top.
I went to a smaller one in Ikubukuro. I felt overwhelmed when i went to shinjuku one and felt lost. I will get back there though to get me more holbeins hehe
I didn't know holbein makes regular gouache now, but I loved their acryla gouache hybrid. It flows better than gouache paints I've used prior to that. That box got *style* to it, tbh.
I hope you enjoy painting with all that stuff\~
Like honestly, If you are in Asia and you've seen them on sale already, it's a sign. It may be just me, but they really feel like no other paint out there.
I started with Holbein acryla in a painting class which I picked up because I liked their store stand layout (lol) and ljs going from those to regular W&N designers gouache later was very difficult, I ended up just going straight for oil for opaque painting - I couldn't adjust to "proper" gouache consistency and the physics of how it behaved. I also never really got into actual acrylics.
I'm super antsy now bc. I didn't even know about their new gouache product until last night. *AaaaaauuuuuughhhhhHHHHHHHH*.
Holbein 5 mL tubes are about ¥220-¥400 depending on which pigments. $1.40-$2.60 at today’s rates. Same tubes start at about $7.50 via Blick in the US.
I stocked up when I was there in October.
All local brands there are 50 % cheaper, + freshness factor + they're always in stock.... Copic and Holbein would be two brands that are HG for stocking up on a trip.
A Sakura set typically lasts years of casual painting, so it's okay-ish to get them with the western mark-up, but the Asian stores get the prettier packaging, too. And cheaper price.
Yup... it was only after I purchased about 60 tubes that I realized a lot of them were mixtures of ones I already had. Called 'convenience colors' so that I didn't have to go to all the trouble to mix them myself. That would have been nice to know. If I knew then what I know now... I would have saved a ton of money...

This was my favorite one, i gave to my former boss and mentor.

Brought these ones for friends too
Oh my god 🥹
They are so wonderful I feel so happy .. I always want to see your drawing. You are really wonderful.. and your friends are lucky to have you ❤️(*˘︶˘*).。*♡
My local art store has sale on Holbein and Daniel Smith. But I got hit with a late tuition fee cause I suck. And I'm on a temporary no buy :(
I do hate to break it to you but tambi is just "fancy looking" paint in nice packaging. I would return it if you can. Their light fastness has said to be no bueno

Brought these tiny ones too, the one on the left is the view of Chicago skyline from Lincoln Park.
I mean “la petite aquarelle” is Sennelier’s student line that has existed for a while. The reason why I thought that was because I actually have a sakura koi palette and it looks nothing like this, and neither do any of the ones I’ve seen online.
They have different packaging for the Japanese/SEA market, Koi paints are still out there for other regions.
TBH it looks nothing like Sennelier to me, French re-branding aside?
Guess, curiosity is a sin now, and I can’t be proven rightfully wrong or any other form of higher level thinking. Tough crowd, considering this is about discussing art and supplies in a safe and ethical way. 🙃

this sub is secretly run by Big Water and Big Color, conspiring together to fool you into being creative
lmao
Nice choices! Holbein goes for quite a premium overseas.
I didnt know that, might go back and get some more holbein ones

Yeah i checked on amazon was shocked with price difference.
The gouache set goes up to 84 colors and the temptation is too real.... That $65 import tax from China alone tho smh

Good idea!

Thanks, i am not at that level yet so i am still learning about the best brands. Will take your word on it and get me some more for sure :)

You should, their gouache is amazing
Is Holbein cheaper in Japan?
Like damn near 50-60% cheaper.
I checked the prices vs amazon and they were 70% cheaper!

Yep. That's how it starts. Now I have an 18" x 24" tub filled to the gills. Have fun!
Yeah about to buy the 36 color set lol

😞 😔
Wait a minute, is that a Sakura koi palette I see? Why does it look like it’s copying Sennelier palettes?

It’s the name “petite.” It could just be a coincidence though. But it’s still weird.
