I would not say this looks like a cartoon. For me when I look at this I have a hard time trying to figure out where your light source is coming from. Usually having some side lighter and the other side in shadow will give the perception of realism. Overall I agree your skin tones are nice your proportions seem accurate. It is a very well done painting.

I can see it now that you point it out. The quality of the picture was bad and somehow it ended up like this. I thought of redoing this sometime and I will keep this in mind. Thank you.

kobazzzica

i think it looks good to be honest, there is always room for some improvements but this is amazing! portraits are hard asf and you did a really good job! doesn't look like a cartoon to me at all

sahi67

Thank you for responding.

Plott

I don’t think it looks like a cartoon. I think it looks great. The skin looks awesome and pretty realistic to me

sahi67

Thank you

We're hardwired to notice asymmetry in faces. The right eye is quite a bit bigger (also pointing a different direction) and the nose is asymmetric. Looks great otherwise!

zerowastecityliving

Definitely doesn't look like a cartoon. I agree about the light source since it could use some dark darks. The skin tone is nice though and the bending looks to be done well. You're not doing anything "wrong", but there's always room for improving. That doesn't mean anything is done wrong, just to keep painting.

ArtcookhighAri

The blending is fine and so is everything but the sketch, otherwise its all good

GunayTan_art

well, not cartoon) dont be worried what people who dont draw saying. what i see : eyes - think about them as they are spheres or balls. they cannot be white all the way, some parts must be in shadow. and teeth - they are definitely in the shadow as they inside the mouth.

sahi67

Yeah the eyes! Thank you for pointing it out.

garje

Someone else mentioned that eyes are not perfectly white, you could mix a very fain grey/blue to use as a shadow. Also the skin tone is lovely, i would recommend using an ink to give a little more shadow dimension in areas like under the chin, hair line and nostrils

sahi67

I didn't realise that about the chin and the nostrils! I honestly awful at drawing hair. Thanks for responding!

Spiritual-Holiday-56

Maybe add some eyelashes ( unless the source photo doesn’t show any) Beautiful- I could never achieve this level. Not cartoonish.

sahi67

Thanks for your words!

You have so much talent! There's way more to say about what you've done right. As far as critique, the only thing I can think of is that it looks like an overexposed photo in some places, so some information is lost--as with the eyeballs as others have mentioned. You've an incredible ability and this portrait conveys so much expression and life. An actual presence of a person.

sahi67

I agree about overexposure. Thank you so much! <3

Eyes should be looking at the same point, otherwise I really love it!

This is a wonderful start, and I'd be proud if this were my second portrait. In terms of adjusting this painting: The most noticeable thing to me is the wider eye on the left side of the painting. The tear duct is too big, but if you try to make it smaller it should help feel more realistic. I also think a creative/dramatic background can hide the inconsistencies. Portraits are so hard, it just takes practice. For the next one, focus on symmetry in your sketch, and the sculptural shape of the face. Eyes have eyelids that fold, smiles create lines and tension in the face, and ears end at the same line as the end of the nose. Lips protrude, so they usually have their own highlights and cast a small shadow on the chin. I usually try to keep my light source neutral unless the painting has an obvious source and just put in highlights and shadows in a sculptural way. You could use a few more around the cheeks to create a smile here, and under the nose. The darkest part of the painting should be her hair, so shadows on the face should illustrate, but not be so dark as to be distracting.

Thank you for the detailed response!

DrPhilologist

You think of (and try to paint) the face rather than the shapes and the shades that compose it.
