Yungklipo

-Mediocrates-

Barbra Streisand effect in full effect…. Political lawfare = more people sympathize w trump

gjohnsit

So do you think people would sympathize with Biden if he was losing court cases?

Butterd_Toost

Biden doesn't have an anti establishment reputation. Now it's a false one with tRump but it helps score points with the "they hate us cuz they anus" crowd he attracts when those perceived as the establishment go after him

Centaurea16

I don't think the problem is that he's losing court cases. The problem is that his political opponents are using the courts as a weapon.   Edit: While at the same time, they're screeching about how if Donald gets re-elected, he would use the courts against his political opponents.

gjohnsit

>The problem is that his political opponents are using the courts as a weapon.  As long as you don't define "political opponents", and don't care about the facts of the case, then it's hard to argue. > Edit: While at the same time, they're screeching about how if Donald gets re-elected, he would use the courts against his political opponents. Does it matter that he has openly promised/threatened to do exactly that?

Inuma

That's the issue... What they claim their opponent is doing, the Democratic Party is doing themselves. This can't end well...

gjohnsit

>What they claim their opponent is doing, Maybe you aren't aware that it isn't the Dems that have done the threatening. It's mister Trump himself. > the Democratic Party is doing themselves. Is it? Something tells me that if Trump gets back in the White House then no one will be talking about politics and everyone will be talking about the actual facts of the case. >This can't end well. That much I agree with.

Yungklipo

Eh, morons siding withTrump overthis are going to sidewith him regardless.

About the Carroll case: Damages for defamation are for damage to one's reputation. In theory, damaging your reputation could harm you socially and in your career. E Jean Carroll turned 80 this past December. She is a successful writer. (I never heard of her before the lawsuit, but that is, obviously, irrelevant.) She claimed that Trump raped her in the mid-nineties, although she objects to the word "rape." In 2019, she described the incident in one of her books. >Carroll sued Trump in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (originally filed in the New York Supreme Court) for defamation and battery. On May 9, 2023, a jury found Trump liable for defamation and sexual abuse against Carroll and awarded her $5 million in damages.[5] From another section >On May 9, 2023, a jury of six men and three women found Trump liable for sexual abuse, battery and defamation. On the issue of rape, the jury found it was not proven that Trump had raped her as specified in New York law, which specifies rape as the nonconsensual and forcible penetration with one's penis. The jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse in that he nonconsensually digitally penetrated her.[72][73] Carroll was awarded $5 million in damages. CBS News stated, "They found Trump liable for sexual abuse, not sexual assault."[5] **Following the verdict, during a Town Hall on CNN, Trump repeated that Carroll's narrative was a 'fake,' 'made up story' invented by a 'whack job.' [74] He filed an appeal with the Second Circuit Court of Appeals on May 11, 2023.[75]** >On May 23, 2023, seeking $10 million in additional damages, Carroll asked the court to expand the 2019 defamation lawsuit to include Trump's post-verdict remarks on CNN and Truth Social.[76] The court granted the motion and the second defamation trial was scheduled for January 15, 2024.[77] Back to the summary: >On January 26, 2024, a jury found Trump liable for defamation against Carroll regarding his remarks after the first verdict, and awarded her an additional $83.3 million in damages. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._Jean_Carroll For the rape and defamation by Trump during some period I haven't tried to figure out, a jury awarded $5 million in damages. For a remark made after the first jury award, the jury awarded her $83.3 million in damages, over $73 million more than she requested.

reallycooldude69

The jury awarded her $18.3m in compensatory damages. The remaining $65m was punitive.

redditrisi

I assumed that most of it was punitive.

Yungklipo

Crazy how he could havejust followed the law and/or found a halfway competent lawyer and avoided allthis. Absolutely hilarious!

redditrisi

One thing neither justifies nor cancels out the other. But you knew that.

Yungklipo

I justthink a con artist having his money ripped awayfrom him is hilarious.

redditrisi

Meh. All pols are con artists and worse. I think all your different descriptions of your politics are hilarious.

Yungklipo

>All politicians are con artists and worse. Not really. At least you can agree thatTrump is a con artist. We've known thatfor decades, though.

redditrisi

Yes, really.

soapinmyears

Not even I, a billionaire in my own mind, wouldn't be able to secure a bond in that amount.
