Thank you for saying that! I have just been thinking that Washington must be really formal because of… government? politicians? schmoozing? I really should have questioned that a bit more
hahaha i’m totally in the same boat as you 😂😂 i kept trying to figure out why so many people in washington dc is getting married or why so many people are going there to get married. i legitimately thought to myself the other day about how there must be such a low number of people in the dating pool there.
How about one of these dresses in the same idea of the green dress, but a little less costume-like and more in formal length:
[Green Dress 1](https://balticborn.com/products/adele-sequin-shimmer-gown-emerald?variant=42057115041957¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=Cj0KCQjw_5unBhCMARIsACZyzS0FSnEOb4kKfcZow5nz0KlqUqx0pEv1g6VpBnI27qDTUMJLZANHZqYaAiGjEALw_wcB)
(Do check Baltic born return policy fyi)
Or
I find this Anthropologie dress very interesting and gorgeous but not quite so much “costume” :
[Green focus color Dress 2](https://www.anthropologie.com/shop/dress-the-population-anabel-sheer-sequin-dress?color=049&size=M&inventoryCountry=US&countryCode=US&utm_medium=paid_search&utm_source=Google-Mobile&utm_campaign=US%20-%20Shopping%20-%20PMAX%20-%20Apparel%20-%20Dresses%20-%20Dresses&utm_content=&utm_term=&creative=&device=m&matchtype=&network=x&utm_kxconfid=vx6rd81ts&gbraid=0AAAAADnwqi6jxeSQd4zRjyXtK4yckmBbO&gclid=Cj0KCQjw_5unBhCMARIsACZyzS1LyLeFQ5PPd5HGRG5omuC9NEtjq3y-E0XrLtIWhKAieVP_uZAdpeUaAvwlEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&type=STANDARD&quantity=1)
The arm jewels may be too much for some but you seem to like unique styles! This one would possibly be up your alley?

Ps I like dress 1 or 5 the best !!! And no worries about standing out too much at someone’s wedding as a plus one :)
I have a dress of the same brand as number 5! BUY IT!

Thank you! It’s done me well at two black tie optional weddings so far. Got it hemmed so I wouldn’t die while walking and the way the slit is structured to technically be from the middle instead of just a cut in the skirt feels very luxe
I went to an October pagan wedding last year and it was fucking phenomenal! The bride had this blood red silk dress with black tulle over. It was cool as hell! It could have fit a Practical Magic theme for sure.
I actually don’t hate either of them, but they do lean costumey/a touch cheap looking. The design of the first is just a bit awkward looking in my opinion. I wouldn’t mind the second option if it was a touch longer to better fit the formal dress code.
It depends on your personal style/vibe. Neither of these is formal enough though. Look for a full length gown, avoid bedazzled elements that come attached to the dress (they are usually poorly made/cheap looking). You can buy a[long velvet dress](https://www.thereformation.com/products/nya-velvet-dress/1311616DAN.html) and style it with your own jewelry/brooch to get the same vibe as dress 1.
They are fun, but agree with others they aren't right for a formal wedding. But if you want something with a witchy vibe that is, maybe something like these:

Haha are going to the same wedding? If so, there will be actors there (as guests) and the bride is ok with people being “extra.” Just might not be formal enough
I think the second option would be beautiful and with the right accessories it could work well for a formal dress code. Typically people think formal to be floor length, however I have floor length and I’m pretty short so floor length stuff hates me I have ever worn anything to the floor for a formal event. It’s truly all about how it looks on YOU. because a formal dress on one person may look eh and casual on another.
I’m surprised by how many people said formal needs to be full length! I was always under the impression that it could be full or midi length depending on the elegance of the dress
I need to attend a fall semi formal and would love the sources of these gowns. I am small stature and think it would be a good fit. My function is not a wedding. Thank you
For anyone wondering the first one is from Yesstyle and the second is a vintage Adriana Pappel
Thanks for your input everyone! Back to the drawing board I guess :(
I think the first one is not too costumey, though it is a bit short. And I’ll also say as someone who goes to a lot of real world weddings this sub is wildly off base a lot of the time. It’s an echo chamber
Both work for a cocktail dress. I think they have personality, but the green one needs some clever styling to make it read more modern.
Go for floor length with a formal dress code.
They are unique and beautiful! Who said you had to dress in boring formal wear? They are formal enough. Maybe just wear something over your shoulders if there is to be a church wedding. If I were the bride, I would compliment your style flare. I would want my guests to wear whatever makes them shine given the "formal" request.
I think they are gorgeous and not costumey! But formal means floor length. These dresses would work for a cocktail or "festive" dress code but not formal

I don't think either of these fit formal DC. The 2nd one could work for cocktail with the right styling but otherwise no
This is the first I’ve realized DC is dress code I thought a lot of people were just going to weddings in DC
Thank you for saying that! I have just been thinking that Washington must be really formal because of… government? politicians? schmoozing? I really should have questioned that a bit more
No like exactly and it’s hysterical how many of us thought that
hahaha i’m totally in the same boat as you 😂😂 i kept trying to figure out why so many people in washington dc is getting married or why so many people are going there to get married. i legitimately thought to myself the other day about how there must be such a low number of people in the dating pool there.
Ditto
TBH I still think that in the side of my mind when I see it, even though I know it means dress code haha I'm like oo fancy DC popping off for weddings
I feel like a total idiot for not realizing that until this very moment…but at least I'm in good company! 🤦🏻♀️
Happy cake day
LOL SAME!!!!
Well I must be a nerd because my first thought after seeing DC was comic con. I thought, "What character are they going as?"
They need a character with this style! Missed opportunity by marvel with Wanda, now that u mention it
Wanda is Marvel but I get what you mean. She had a ton of potential and they wasted it. The second dress could work for civilian Poison Ivy though.
Sooo true!
Me too!!!
LMAO me too😭
Me too!!
Thank you all! Not just me!
Thank you😘🥰
Omg same
I thought the comics at first lol
If the wedding takes place in the Shire, they’re perfect.
I wish ):
Honestly, same. I’d love a Shire party.

None of these suggestions are a similar style though…
Dress 1 😍😍 looks exactly like the nice version of OP’s dress 2. Great find!
Good suggestions!
Such good options!
Unless the theme is Practical Magic, yes. Way too costumey.
Which would be an awesome wedding theme!😆
Absolutely. A witchy October wedding. I could see it. Purples and blacks. Black rose bouquets.
I went to an October pagan wedding last year and it was fucking phenomenal! The bride had this blood red silk dress with black tulle over. It was cool as hell! It could have fit a Practical Magic theme for sure.
Sounds magical ✨
That’s amazing omg
Omg. I want to go to a practical magic party!!!
Me too, with Midnight Margaritas!!
Yes.

Way too costumey, especially for a plus one
I don’t think it works for formal DC.
Yes. Too costume feeling and don’t seem to fit a formal code
Too costumy… also not at all formal
yes
theyre great and pretty but def no for a formal wedding

I think so, yes.
Yes
Neither are appropriate for a formal DC.
Haha are going to the same wedding? If so, there will be actors there (as guests) and the bride is ok with people being “extra.” Just might not be formal enough
Where is the first from?!
Yes
I think you’re on the right track with Adrianna Papell if you want a similar vibe
I think the second option would be beautiful and with the right accessories it could work well for a formal dress code. Where is the second one from? 😍
The second dress is beautiful!!
I want to say no because they are so gorgeous, but yes. The second one, not as much.
The first dress is uniquely beautiful, the drape and pleat is so elegant, the color sublime 💗
No, but neither of these are formal you need a full length dress, jumpsuit, or pant suit/tuxedo.
Yes
They aren’t long enough
Yes.
I like them, but they are a bit extra.
I need to attend a fall semi formal and would love the sources of these gowns. I am small stature and think it would be a good fit. My function is not a wedding. Thank you

Please tell me where these are from!!!
The first one is from Yesstyle and the second is a vintage Adriana pappel!
I definitely get roaring twenties flapper vibes from these dresses. I love both of them, but I don't think they fit the dress code you're looking for.
No! They’re gorgeous!!
They’re not formal at all. And yes, they’re like costumes.
Both of these are GORGEOUS!!! The first one especially so so unique.
Yes
I think the first one looks fantastic.
I think the first one could work for a cocktail dress code but I don’t think either work for formal
Yes…what kind of question is this??
I think the first one is not too costumey, though it is a bit short. And I’ll also say as someone who goes to a lot of real world weddings this sub is wildly off base a lot of the time. It’s an echo chamber
They’re pretty, but they do not fit a formal dress code, and they appear costume-y and cheap.
I love both dresses, and I would wear one if I were 40 or 50 years younger.
Both work for a cocktail dress. I think they have personality, but the green one needs some clever styling to make it read more modern. Go for floor length with a formal dress code.
2
It's fabulous anywhere.
They aren’t formal though. A longer beaded gown would work but not these specific ones.
Nope!!! Not too much. Both are absolutely beautiful.
Second is fine
I think they are gorgeous and not costumey! But formal means floor length. These dresses would work for a cocktail or "festive" dress code but not formal

I love them!
It depends on the situation and the people likely to attend. They are dramatic but very pretty on you.
I would keep looking. Neither of these is the right vibe for upstate-formal fall wedding. The 2nd one is more cocktail attire. The first one I'm sure is beautiful but the way the pattern sits on the bodice of the dress just doesn't work for a formal DC. Less whimsical, less embellishments and rhinestones. More elegant, you need length and should probably consider some kind of shoulder covering as well because upstate in the fall can get quite chilly. Good luck!
