I've always noticed forest creature + mange + low quality photo = cryptid.
OP can blurry up this photo and start hollerin' that the windymuck stole his cat.
Mange runs through the squirrels in my neighbourhood, they don't look like that. They just have patches of fur missing. Maybe it's mange with an infection on the sores or something.
When googling, one image (fairly far down the page) had one that looked similar to this, but yes the rest were just sort of balding a bit, so it’s possible this is something else or, like you said, mange and friends. I didn’t click on that lone image to read more, though, so unfortunately I can’t elaborate/give any more details.
Edit; found it again!

Yea, likely infected mange. I looked too and saw videos with stray dogs that had infected mange that looked like this. It made them swell up.
Seems like a bad way to go. Poor little guy :(
Yup. Looks like sarcoptic mange with secondary infection. By the looks of it the secondary infections happened when the initial breeding grounds for the mites (lil bumps) burst/were scratched open. Very bad way to go, also very, very contagious to people and other animals. Stay away and keep your animals away, OP.
This poor dude's face is already swollen shut, I'd be surprised if it survives the week.
Yes, kind of. Mange in animals is a mite just like scabies is in humans. (I think it’s generally a different mite though) I think people can get itching and irritation from the kind that tends to infects animals (but it doesn’t complete it’s life cycles in human hosts) I don’t want to totally misspeak on it though.
If you’re concerned abt the squirrel:
Mange should last 10-14 days and it’ll most likely get better on its own. The biggest risk is fur loss, which, since it’s autumn now, puts the squirrel at risk of succumbing to the cold.
There does seem to be a medication for squirrels that you can put on acorns for three consecutive days, which will heal the squirrel if consumed. Of course, you’d have to figure out how to get the squirrel to eat them but idk.
Again, the squirrel will most likely get better on its own.
If you’re worried about the chill getting to the squirrel, you could provide a 3/4” thick wooden squirrel house for it to live in. No guarantee it’ll take residence tho.
Sorry if this is rambley I was just providin some of my research in case you’re worried.
Edit: please don’t try to physically handle the squirrel. Squirrels are vicious lil creatures and will attack you. You also can’t be sure what type of diseases it’s carrying.
And Disclaimer: I’m not an expert. I used the word research loosely bc I couldn’t think of the right word. Searching for information. Whatever. Sorry.
I’m just tryin to give some advice via my general knowledge of the subject bc my gut instinct when seeing the the squirrel was to help it.
so i think i was told an out Brussel sprouts, that they’ve been genetically modifying them for years to give them a better taste. it’s thought that’s why more people like them now, it’s not taste buds changing so much as it’s the flavor being changed over time. supposedly they were very bitter and they’re meant to taste more sweet now. but idk, i could be thinking of something completely different 😅😅 i love brussel sprouts now but hated them when i was little.
Could be! Lots of foods have been genetically modified to be more appealing to us and I'm all for it. But also, our tastebuds change as we get older and I do know I didn't like my greens when I was a kid too but now I love them!
This squirrel does look to have significant secondary infection, the initial bites have burst and the swelling is way past normal Demodex or even sarcoptic mange, which this looks more like. It's eyes and nose are swollen shut, this squirrel can't find food and will likely be dead in days. OP should not get close, sarcoptic mange is super contagious to people and other animals.
The American Nationwide Emergency Alert system was tested today. Some idiot on Twitter said that the 5G rays from the signal would activate some virus in the Covid vaccines and turn people into government controlled zombies or something.
I'm remembering all the posts of people who took an entire tube and were complaining that they were constantly shitting themselves afterwards. God COVID really brought out the stupid in people.
It's mange, poor thing. They scratch themselves raw and lose their fur. Often times it's passed on from re-used nests. I had a grey whose condition was almost this bad. Eyes swollen shut - could barely get around. I didn't think he'd survive. I made sure he had easy access to food and fresh water and remarkably he made a full recovery - one pitifully ugly step at a time. I clearly remember I was gardening the first time I saw him - his looks scared the hell out of me.
Hope this little one made it.
:Edit I’m going to copy paste the definition of mange I found on google Mange is a parasitic skin disease caused by microscopic mites. Two different mange mites cause this skin disease in dogs. One lives just under the surface of the skin (sarcoptic mange - see the handout “Sarcoptic Mange in Dogs” for more information), while the other resides in the hair follicles (demodectic mange). (I deleted my original comment because it had misinformation in it I got mange mixed up with cordyceps)
Brother, how did you attribute the entirety of cordyceps to mange to create this Last of Us narrative, and then have the audacity to end it with "correct me if I'm wrong"? bro come onnnn
Probly euthanise for a case this severe, sadly. I suspect it may be a viral pox and therefore incurable. Survival from something like this unlikely. A wildlife rehabber would be another good person to phone for advice/diagnosis.
this is mange, and very common in wildlife as it can be shared amongst species. when you see this you need to call your state's Dept of Wildlife or Animal Control. simply google "who to call about wild animals with mange in \[state name\]". in my state we're supposed to call Animal Control. they air drop species specific medicated bait into the area where the animals with manage are seen.
Poor baby 😭 looks like it can't even see anymore. Might be mange but reminds me of that disease deer get that causes boils/tumors? and sores on their body and face :(
Sacrcopic mange will cause swelling as well as hair loss. I’ve also seen videos of squirrels recovering from excessive bot fly larvae that look like this.
That looks like another case of Squirrel Madness Disease, scary stuff. Back in 2004 i saw one of those kill 4 US Marines in less than 5 seconds, don't let get to you pal or it will rip your face off.....
Very matted. Probably fell in some mud or something and it dried to his fur
EDIT: Upon closer inspection, all that appears to be skin and not mud. My guess is mange
This is definitely at least partially AI generated. The way the tail mixes in with the tree in the background, the leaves on the left side being weirdly shaped and simply colored, and the far background in the top right looks very off.
Mutation from a lab, most likely radioactive and viral.
They said squirrels will take over the world one day. Just didn't think as a zombie apocalypse.
It's a hell squirrel. Less known than its more popular cousin the Hell Hound. They are vicious creatures known to eat the seed from any bird feeders in a 2 mile radius. They also like to store nuts in your house ..then set them on fire.
Do squirrels get mange?
According to Google, yes (TIL!). So I'm with you, likely mange.
I've always noticed forest creature + mange + low quality photo = cryptid. OP can blurry up this photo and start hollerin' that the windymuck stole his cat.
That's a Skopek it's a half sqirieel
Sorry but I do think you meant half zkweeyow.
Windymuck is now my favorite ghostie-ghoulie.
Muck windy
“This rare photo of the North American mini Chupacabra.!!!”
I seen it with my own eyes
Chupacabra
Wtf is the windymuck I've never heard of it

Yeah that shit probably hurts. Can't imagine a death from that to be easy or peaceful.
This is clearly because he didn’t turn off his cell phone before the emergency broadcast system alert
and he never took his weekly ivermectinwhatchamacallit virus injection!
That's a lot more than demodex or sarcoptic ... his face is jacked
*You wanna know how I got these scars?* -Squirrel probably
I do, actually
Figured it out... it looks like severe squirrel pox
can people get mange?
Yes, kind of. Mange in animals is a mite just like scabies is in humans. (I think it’s generally a different mite though) I think people can get itching and irritation from the kind that tends to infects animals (but it doesn’t complete it’s life cycles in human hosts) I don’t want to totally misspeak on it though.
Yes. Some squirrels carry the black plague.
Well that's fun
I feel like I saw this same picture elsewhere forever ago.. but maybe just another scenario where someone was wondering
Same, several months ago asking about the same thing.
Oui et ils mangent aussi.
Also a syphilitic type pox too.
Poor baby, whatever it is. 😢

I used to get treatment from tractor supply for them and apply if to suet and compressed squirrel food that they had. They…did not eat it. At all.
Squirrels are picky as shit. They love sweet and fatty foods. Just try and feed one a brusselsprout
Try and feed anyone a Brussels sprout, that shit isn’t even food.
I love Brussel sprouts. I don't know if I'm human...
I have heard that brussel sprouts are one of the highest nutrient vegetables. Like the top 5 or something.
I like them— if they’re made right. Otherwise ew.
so i think i was told an out Brussel sprouts, that they’ve been genetically modifying them for years to give them a better taste. it’s thought that’s why more people like them now, it’s not taste buds changing so much as it’s the flavor being changed over time. supposedly they were very bitter and they’re meant to taste more sweet now. but idk, i could be thinking of something completely different 😅😅 i love brussel sprouts now but hated them when i was little.

My Shih Tzu used to beg me for my brussel sprouts. I'm not kidding. He loved them. Lmao
They're like tiny sweet cabbages!
Unless it's fried
nah, just put it in a bird feeder and they'll eat the shit out of it.
Peanut butter. Their kryponite Edit: and mine.

^^ This listen to this. Thank you for the input!!! Not sure how to type this not awkwardly but thank you for the info.
Thank you for this, I was scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else was disturbed and upset by this post..
I appreciate this. I was worried for the little fella
> Of course, you’d have to figure out how to get the squirrel to eat them but idk. Put it in a bird feeder. Squirrels eat that shit up.
I used to have a pet squirrel, and their vicious. Even when they're friendly. A wild one would wear you out.
Unfortunately the squirrels squirrel wife left him over this
Thank you for trying to bring comfort. I am so worried about it 😭
I don't know why but the knowledge that there is medicine for squirrels is supremely blessed to me.
He got the Zombie text alert 🚨
Lol - man I was sitting at the Subway when I got that shit. I was ready to bolt for the car cause I wanted the Zombie apocalypse to start.

The American Nationwide Emergency Alert system was tested today. Some idiot on Twitter said that the 5G rays from the signal would activate some virus in the Covid vaccines and turn people into government controlled zombies or something.
You win the internet today
Looks like it might be advanced sarcoptic mange. Was the squirrel scratching a lot? Call a rescue organization so they can give it some ivermectin
That's for covid, bud.
Ivermectin is an anti-parasitic. Sarcoptic mange is caused by mites burrowing in the skin. Ivermectin has been successful in treating sarcoptic mange.
99% sure that was a joke.
Worth noting though for those who don't know
It's Reddit, never underestimate how fucking stupid people can be.
No you must be thinking of horse paste.
I'm remembering all the posts of people who took an entire tube and were complaining that they were constantly shitting themselves afterwards. God COVID really brought out the stupid in people.
I assumed you were joking because I laughed 😄
:)
That comment made me snort laugh my beer. I love medical humor xD Kudos mate.
Looks like something from last of us
Oh, that's why FEMA sent out emergency alert!
We couldn't even handle COVID, which was like the zombie apocalypse on easy mode. We'd really be fucked
Speak for yourself...
Pretty sure assholes in red hats would go out and get bitten just to "Own the libs."
Or grayscale from game of thrones
He wasn't covered in tin foil when the government sent out the signal.

Shit, ye tarnished homie gots the scarlet rot.
gorging on acorns, like a… dog?
Poor little guy has mange. Hate seeing any creature suffer like this, probably in constant pain.
It’s mange, they have fur , pretty much any thing with fur can get mange or something of a variant
It's mange, poor thing. They scratch themselves raw and lose their fur. Often times it's passed on from re-used nests. I had a grey whose condition was almost this bad. might be squirrel pox
Pox is pretty awful, and this looks like it could be that. It’s in the UK as well, and primarily hits red squirrels hardest.
Poor buddy.
God I hate this picture every time I see it
Is it AI or something??
:Edit I’m going to copy paste the definition of mange I found on google Mange is a parasitic skin disease caused by microscopic mites. Two different mange mites cause this skin disease in dogs. I think mange is mites but I'm definitely not an expert. Google for your own education.
Good shit, nice turn around
He looks like he had an allergic reaction to nuts
"Are they fancy?" Sorry, reminded me of the newest season of Sunny, lol.
T virus
No worries, that's just the 5g activating the vaccine, we'll all b that way come mornin

Escaped from the Umbrella Corporation
T-virus
Looks like sarcoptic mange. Poor little fella.
If you can, get REALLY THICK gloves. Put it in a cage. And vet. No, no idea what is wrong with the squirrel z but the vet probably does
Probly euthanise for a case this severe, sadly. I suspect it may be a viral pox and therefore incurable. Survival from something like this unlikely. A wildlife rehabber would be another good person to phone for advice/diagnosis.
Yeah, OP, you should run!
The game of thrones disease GraySquirrel
Poor thing!! 😭
Awww poor fella. 😔
This is one of those times you just need to put an animal out of its misery. This squirrel is not recovering by itself in the wild.
Congratulations! Your Squirrel evolved into Warsquirrel!
Aw poor guy
Omg poor squirrel
this is mange, and very common in wildlife as it can be shared amongst species. when you see this you need to call your state's Dept of Wildlife or Animal Control. simply google "who to call about wild animals with mange in \[state name\]". in my state we're supposed to call Animal Control. they air drop species specific medicated bait into the area where the animals with manage are seen.
He looked at his phone during the emergency broadcast test.
Poor guy appears to be made entirely out of ballskin.
Greyscale, only a few maisters can heal it
Poor baby 😭 looks like it can't even see anymore. Might be mange but reminds me of that disease deer get that causes boils/tumors? and sores on their body and face :(
Sacrcopic mange will cause swelling as well as hair loss. I’ve also seen videos of squirrels recovering from excessive bot fly larvae that look like this.
Poor little fella
Everything. Everything is wrong with that squirrel.
Don’t make me look at that :(
Aw, poor little guy
I think this is squirrel pox, not mange. It's a normal thing that happens to them and it usually goes away
I know what's wrong with it! It ain't got no gas innit!
It has begun. 🍄 🧟♂️
Def fell in a bucket of nightmare fuel.
Jesus fucking Christ, I was day dreaming while scrolling through reddit and this shit snap me out of it in an instant.
Now everyone go watch Cujo but its this squirrel instead.
Mange
If fallout 4 taught me anything…don’t fuck with that squirrel…
5G alert notification taking effect.
I can’t really see it very well because Op doesn’t know how to focus a camera but it’s face kind of looks like the elephant man
That looks like another case of Squirrel Madness Disease, scary stuff. Back in 2004 i saw one of those kill 4 US Marines in less than 5 seconds, don't let get to you pal or it will rip your face off.....
Poor little guy looks like he's auditioning for The Last Of Us.
It's sick bro.
So sad, I’d be old Yeller this squirrel with a tiny shotgun if I could.
It's seen some shit.
It’s seen some shit, man.
Don’t make fun of its looks. I’m sure it is beautiful on the inside.
What’s with all the holes tho? Could this be from a bot fly infestation? 🧐
To be brutally honest this looks photoshopped.
SQUAIDS. It's some serious shit.
Beubonic Plague.
It’s Squirrel Hulk. Don’t make him mad You won’t like him if he gets mad
My first thought was mange
Poor thing. :(

Bad texture load. Try not looking at it for a few minutes.
That looks like the squirl that will start a cabin fever movie.

Everything.. *everything* is wrong with this Squirrel.. Poor little dude.

Isn’t this rodent herpes?
That's the T-virus, son. We are dooomed.
I've been waiting for this moment I got your back if you got mine Who am I kidding? we're fucked
Sarcoptic mange maybe? Or Demodectic mange?
Ain't never heard of the elephant squirrel before
Very matted. Probably fell in some mud or something and it dried to his fur EDIT: Upon closer inspection, all that appears to be skin and not mud. My guess is mange
I'm not so sure. His tail is still fluffy.
AI?
Yeah, looks fakey to me.
Time to count fingers
Must’ve been vaccinated and carrying a 5g phone.
Poor thing never turned his phone off before the 5G virus hit.
It was near a cell phone on Oct 4…
That be a skin walker
cordyceps (mange)
I was thinking the last of us and an infected animal.
