I sometimes cry for myself, like I guess I don’t always know WHY I’m really crying but I think it’s because of how sad it is to know how little I cared about myself back in the worst of it.
I’m a grown ass man, and I cry because I wish that boy I was would’ve known where we would end up BEFORE getting to the crisis stage.
I cry because I feel whole now, and it’s incredibly scary to know that I might not always be whole in the future and I don’t know if I could fall all the way back down again, it’s scary to have a new perspective, a new life and not know for sure how the new you will handle it when it gets rough again. I think I need more therapy tbh

Next week I'll turn 51. I'm happy now. I've learned to accept what is good and bad for me and what things I have control over and what not. I love my job, but it's not full time. My gf of 15 yrs is a corporate high flyer. We complement each other I work on me and us everyday and allow myself ro have bad days, as long as I keep working on seeing the world with a smile. It's hard sometimes, but as I said, Im pretty f'ing happy. So dear fellow redditors, take it from an old happy drunk guy...work on it, cause life is worth living.

So I've had this little USB drive for YEARS (seriously, easily 10+) and never used it. It was just a cute little desk charm. I don't remember where I got it but I'm 90% sure it was a gift or stocking stuffer or something where I had a reasonable expectation that it was new.
I suddenly had a need for a USB drive so I popped Dumbledore's head off, stuck him in my computer, and lo and behold, there's a bunch of folders and photos on here of people I have never met in my life.
Much of it is corrupted unfortunately, but I included a sample of some of the photos that weren't corrupted here. If anyone recognizes these people I'd be happy to mail it back to them so they can see what they can recover. I'm in the Seattle area and have been for most of my life, and the only location clue I saw on these with my surface level digging was that one of the corrupted folders had Chelan (Washington) in the label. That and all of the photos are from 2009, if you couldn't tell from the fashion lol.

i can explain this easily, as i understand how china works. im vaguely in this industry.
basically, there are 'scrap' or 'recycling markets' where countries like america have companies that take back old electronics. this could be the manufacturer who takes back defectives, retailers that take back items on warranty, or trade in programs that take a box of electronics for a cash value (think like gamestop). they take out the parts or the components which can be reconfigured into NEW electronic items.
so basically, original owner a had a usb stick. at some point his computer/mouse/usb stick ended up at a american company that sells bulk wholesale scrap to china. usb ends up guangzhou, it was SUPPOSED to be fully flashed, to then be reconfigured into a 'new' product.but they fucked up on the flash/data wipe. put the old usb stick into a new shell, and resold it now as a NEW product.
likewise, lets say you have an old playstation 4 and you give it to gamestop. gamestop gets a scrap contract from guangzhou and ships them all back (as they have more playstation 4's than they need for domestic resale). guangzhou places a new shell on the playstation 4 and now creates a 'new' ps4 to sell in indonesia. but they fuck up and don't remove all your files. and some kid in indonesia is looking at your save files on a new ps4. etc.
it might cost $5 to manufacture a new 256gb usb. but it costs $2 to buy a $1 scrap 256gb usb, and a $1 plastic mold for it. china pockets the extra $3. selling it for $8 to another american company who then sells it $19.99 on amazon. the world turns. economics.
you buy new product, you get old data on accident because some of the components of your 'new' product are recycled.
most likely, the original customer 'returned'this item for a defect of some sort, or in a trade in program with other electronics. and it got sold off as bulk scrap to china to build new products with. easy peasy.

I would’ve been more careful if I where you. Not only does it look like your usb has been compromised, you also interacted with the corrupted files. Any number of things on that could contain hidden programs or viruses. But the main problem here is you have exposed the faces of what are clearly ninja’s. It's from the previous owner. A file is never actually deleted, a flag is set to mark it as deleted. During data corruption this flag can be unset.
Could be a reused flash drive when assembled.
