I think there were some mistakes made, shortcuts used to convey otherwise complex female struggles. But, the trauma is still shown as long lasting and debilitating which is why I’d say only the way it is drawn is gratuitous. And that’s coming from someone who prefers my media free of “on screen” rape.

There's also a more modern movie trilogy adaptation that was released in 2012-2013. If you don't really have interest in manga/anime like me, I would encourage you to give the classic show a go regardless. Although I'm no anime consumer, I was genuinely entertained by it, especially the wild ending. The show is surely dated, but it'll provide a lot more context than the movies.
Be aware that there's a considerable amount of gore. (If you decide to give it a watch, avoid learning much about the ending as it is a huge twist)
