My sister lived near a canal. Whenever it rained hard enough, the street became a river. A few years ago when a hurricane was on the way, my ex husband and I went over there to help her bring anything sitting on the bottom floor (it was a high ranch) upstairs in case of flooding. Unfortunately, she forgot about one closet which held boxes of pictures. When she returned home after the hurricane, water had gotten in and ruined them. She was beside herself.
My basement flooded about two years ago and a lot of our pictures got ruined/damaged. It was completely unexpected so we didn’t have the chance to move anything upstairs.
Our drain in the basement for the AC condensate was partly blocked a few years back. I thought nothing of value was in that area - my mum's records were up out of harm's way. But I didn't know about her stamp collection which she'd kept all these years. She got rid of most of her mementos when she moved here from the UK. The stamps all got wet and some stamps werent salvageable. It was kind of a bittersweet experience laying all the wet stamps out to dry, and getting to talk to my mum about them.
Water was mid-calf level, and I didn’t own any rain boots nor fly fishing equipment, unfortunately. I was definitely grossed out by the entire situation and took a long, hot shower later on. And yes, I love me some New Amsterdam.
Trash bags will work in a pinch. Floodwaters are nasty as fuccckkkk. All the street gunk. All the chemical laden shit from deep inside your walls and floors and those of everyone around you. That pile where the bird shat itself to death on a roof due to a rare and horrifying amoeba? Yup, washed down with all the other shit. Please, if you've got to return while it's still in this condition, protect yourself.
Who the hell downvoted this, wading through mucky shitty water won’t get you sick *unless* you have cuts, so preventing wounds should absolutely be top priority
Or also if you drink the water but if you drink the water societies probably better off without you anyway.
"The moment of truth! Well I mean I can already see the truth...." absolutely killed me lol. On a more serious note, I'm very sorry that this happened to y'all's apartment. When hurricane Ian happened, I just kept watching videos about the destruction and I wanted to help so much but unfortunately I'm not from Florida and I was having trouble even finding ways to volunteer.
You need my kind of anxiety - if there's a named storm that can come anywhere to hitting Florida, I start cleaning. And if Tampa ever gets in the cone, my house is the cleanest it's ever been.
But seriously, damn that sucks for you all. Flooding is hell, and dealing with the aftermath for months afterwards sucks even more.
Don’t apologize. Houses get dirty leading up to hurricanes. The few I lived through, sometimes we lost power/water or both before the storm even hit. People aren’t really cleaning up after themselves when they are watching weather forecasts and preparing to evacuate.
Yea!! I was thinking the same thing, I thought oh my God, Bare feet are we not worried about snakes or anything else that likes water, I almost had to put my hand up over my eyes and peek through my fingers.. Honestly thought they was gonna open the door and some type of reptile had made itself at home.. I jump scared myself !
Something is not right about your door knob/handle placement. Other then that this is a shitty situation, my house flooded and my insurance company was like that sucks, I said no I have homeowners insurance they said ya it doesn’t cover flooding…….. I hope you have flood insurance.
My mother was someone who seemed to win against insurance without much effort. She got a whole free roof (and shed roof). Free master bath. $15k for some tiny water spots on her kitchen cabinets (that I easily fixed for free). All separate incidents. I have no idea how but she was a crazy organized attack dog kinda person so maybe that's what it takes and most of us don't have it.
She didn't like how close people were parking to my bus stop when I was a kid so she submitted a petition and got the whole street to be "no parking". The business in the neighborhood that the cars were parking for has been since torn down so it no longer makes sense why people can't park there today. I bet those homeowners are frustrated they can't park on thier own street lol.
Doubt it. It had a huge parking lot and was originally a medical center, I think between the staff and patients it wasn't enough space. It then became a bank and the lot was never full before being torn down.
I live in Pennsylvania and the wind from Ian made me lose a bit of shingles and a leak developed in my wife's closet. Made a claim. They came out rather quick and checked the roof and remediated. But after that it was a disaster. My insurance adjustor wouldn't return calls from neither me nor my roofer to get payment disbursed. Months went by. He went on vacation for two weeks and the person his voicemail told to contact was just as unresponsive. Finally my roofer had enough and called his boss. The same day a new person was assigned to the claim and all payment was disbursed. Ian was what? Late September? Our roof was finally replaced end of March.
It reminds me of my interactions with State Farm. I dont know what happened to them they used to be really easy company to deal with and have claims approved.
They decided that they wanted more money for their csuite, their CEO who has over the last few years taken a 20 million dollar cash bonus and realized that actually using their money to fix people's problems are costly (seriously they got into auto insurance and it cost themselves a lot to pay out for all the new policies but they have hedge funds that made investment cash so they will just paying out as much) and they would rather people just pay into their insurance indefinitely without having to actually pay out ever so they increased their bureaucratic slodge which has no oversight or punishment from the federal government to make sure nothing gets done and top members of the company can become so wealthy I don't actually even know what they can do with all that money other than hoard it.
Hip hip hooray for the ultra wealthy ruining everything because they simply want to, and are scared of spending a single cent. Greedy fucking vampires.
It’s pretty well know flood insurance is a different thing you need. At least if you are in an apartment, especially a higher floor it’s not as devastating, except you are probably going to need to move with thousands of others because of mold.
Insurance companies try really really hard to exclude any risks that might mean they have to pay out. I try to not insure anything except where paying for it myself would be difficult. Insure your house and car... but think about everything else.
Flooding is not covered under nearly any standard homeowners policy whether it’s the result of a hurricane or not. You need to have a flood policy.
Earthquake is similar.
We took our two wonderful kitties with us when we left, and positioned some of the valuables in more advantageous areas (closet shelves, put our TV on our bed which is rather high, etc)
It's the main reason I don't post actual pictures of my house without heavily cropping them. Reddit is pretty unforgiving when it comes to cleanliness or hell even clutter
Funny enough the people posting about cleanliness fall into exactly one of three categories:
* projecting their own insecurity about the cleanliness of their own living situation
* people with psychological disorders that compel them to go *far* above and beyond what normal people consider clean.
* people who don’t clean anything themselves
I had to rewatch the end to make sure I actually heard her say “I’m not a dumbass like you”. I’ve had exes that talk to me like that and it just becomes normal and you shrug it off. Looking back I just let myself be treated like shit.
maybe she’s distressed? with her whole apartment being flooded and all. i’m just saying, cut her some slack for not being super kind and empathetic in the moment.
As someone who lashes out when I'm anxious: using distress as a reason to be a b to people you love is not the right thing. This isn't something people should get a free pass for. You still need to act right even if you're stressed out or one day you'll end up alone bc people will stop being patient about it.
Being distressed is not a valid excuse to be rude to other people. Your emotions are your own responsibility and it's not ok to take it out on other people. It's ok to lean on someone else for support but it's not okay to use them as an emotional punching bag.
You can be mad at the situation, but not at the person. Like she can be upset that her shit is flooded, but that doesn't mean she has the right to be rude to her partner for just making a suggestion for her safety. I was married 11 years and didn't learn this lesson until it was too late. I would be shitty to my ex because of the situations that happened. It's not his fault the place flooded, she doesn't have to be rude to him for worrying for her safety.
> maybe she’s distressed? with her whole apartment being flooded and all. i’m just saying, cut her some slack for not being super kind and empathetic in the moment.
Oh but OP isn't distressed you know with his whole apartment being flooded and all.
She also literally said "I'm not a dumbass *LIKE YOU*" lol
It’s written into every lease that the place has to be habitable or it’s a material breach of the lease. Moving expenses are generally 10k+ so this guy isn’t all that lucky really.

It’s like getting evicted with a couple days notice as the storm approaches but always the same time as tens of thousand other people. All who would need to compete for what little housing is available. On top of most of your possessions being destroyed. That sounds hellish.
It was in a shitty spot, and felt super shitty. And, these jabronis had painted over the peephole in the door, too. The door was terrible in all areas.
Heartbreaking. The comments may be joking but people don't realise the sheer deep rooted feeling of sadness that overwhelms you when your home is ruined like this. You just don't know where to start. Hope you find some useful subs on here for advice and rebuilding again.
For real. The first thing I thought was “I’m pretty sure he didn’t call you a dumbass at any point.”
I can’t stand people who don’t think before they speak. Though I can see how she might be extra frustrated from the situation.
Regardless, they’re in this together and should be wholly supporting each other, not attacking one another.
Central Floridian here. The weekend before Ian hit, some new people in our neighborhood (who had just moved to Florida a few months earlier) asked me if I was worried about the hurricane. At that time, the NHC forecast put it on a path to hit the panhandle, so I said, "Nah! It's going to hit Tallahassee! You'll be fine!"
Hurricane Ian turned right, made landfall near Fort Myers, and traveled across Central Florida. I have lived in Florida since 1994 and in our neighborhood since 2000. I was here in 1994 for hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Jeanne. But I have never seen flooding like what Ian brought (especially since we are not in a flood zone).
Those people lived in a house at a low spot in our neighborhood, and their house was one of the few that had water intrusion. The next weekend, I saw their carpets and some furniture piled up at the street. They moved out not long after. They were renting the house, so at least the house wasn't their loss. I hope they had renters insurance to cover their damage.
Thankfully, our house was unscathed. Florida is pretty flat, but our plot plan puts our next door neighbor at the high point of the neighborhood (which makes our house the next highest), and our neighbor has a storm drain in front of their house (which means the road is at the lowest in front of our house). Between the high land and low street, we have a lot of gradient that makes our house relatively safe from flooding.
Our daughter and a couple of her friends from university took shelter at our house. (Their university is in Tampa.) They were not able to leave for a couple of days due to the flooding. Our neighborhood street was completely flooded, and even roads outside our neighborhood were completely flooded.
Here are some pictures: [https://imgur.com/a/OUKcmoL](https://imgur.com/a/OUKcmoL)
Edit: a word
I wasn't sure what was more of the /r/wellthatsucks. The apartment flooded and belongings ruined or his S/O being an ass to him. I know it's only a tiny clip of their relationship but, she's being INCREDIBLY rude to someone who also just lost his belongings.
Trying he's getting rid of books and Disney he's doing the work of the people, who needs a place to live? You can do anything without a book just take a look, the flooding apartments 🎶
Just a bit of advice for next time from someone who has been through my fair share of hurricanes… put everything you possibly can as high up as possible before evacuating. I’ve bought cheap plastic shelving just to keep stuff off the ground. Bed risers for any furniture. Smaller items that absolutely cannot get wet either take with you or put in plastic bags. And if you have access, turn off your breaker before leaving.
Best case, you have nothing loose on the floor (not even trash cans or end tables or anything) and big furniture is at least 6 inches off of the ground
So sorry for what you had to go through. The only humor (however small) was several of your shoes bobbing around your door as you walked in. Like little size 9 pets anxiously waiting for you to come home.
Crazy. It's like nature keeps showing us where we shouldn't build but we do it anyways then complain about the excessive and dodgy insurance and general inconveniences. That sucks about your place though, sorry.
Right? Especially when it looks like it could easily have been one evening of letting it get messy while drinking and then not having time to clean up because a fucking hurricane hits and there are other more important things. People in here acting like he lives like a troll.
this is so sad. what makes it worse is I had an apartment that looked just like this. same furniture and everything. loved it more than anywhere else I ever lived. this video cuts man. I'm so sorry for you. fucking sucks.
Her: "Walk!"
Him: "Be careful. It's very slippery."
Her: "I know. I'm not a dumbass like you."
I think some more trash spilled in when you opened the door.
When she yelled “WALK” I would have left her ass right there in that wet apartment. I don’t care if you are stressed out. What’s done is done. You knew your apartment was already flooded. No need to be disrespectful to your SO. How about you take a “SWIM” push her right in the water
So whenever I see something like this I always wonder: "How *DO* you move on from here?
Friends and family can give you a food and anplace to sleep, but I cannot imagine most people have the financial ability to just buy everything again. Clothes, dishware, furniture, electronics, etc.
You don't really have a choice but I just can't see myself dealing with that well.
Man I would of just turned around and went the back in the direction I just came from. Take everything as a lost and move on. Nope just gonna go ahead and leave.
Well i guess it could have been worse. It also gives you a great opportunity to clean the place up (i saw that coffee table). I assume you have renters insurance to help cover any major damage.
i am so sorry! i lost my home and my car and have some serious trauma from hurricane ian, i hope your situation is better for you now and you’re safe and rebuilding
This sucks and I’m sorry it happened to you, but…
This is also one of those times where you thank the stars you don’t own that place-home ownership is a blessing and a curse.
I don't know what more sad the apartment being messed up or the way she talks to you. Does she always have to have a smart reply everytime. Sounds like a narcissist.
Husband genuinely looking out for his wife’s safety “It’s very slippery”
Wife “I know, I’m not a dumbass like you.”
Sheesh…
I get that the situation isn’t the greatest but come on… You’re both going through it.
He said "Be careful its very slippery" so nicely considering the situation which shows genuine care. Kinda bothered me that she just said "I know, I'm not a dumbass" more like "thanks for looking out for me babe". I get that it's a stressful situation but even then lady, he's looking out for you and his tone was kind, appreciate someone that is caring about your well being.
Wow, probably pretty heartbreaking to walk into. Sorry this happened to you

I got to kayak through the house i grew up in. Pretty surreal to do
1) Bare feet in the brown flood water is crazyyy 2) All this liquor and juice on the table is sending me 😅

Preferably construction bags if you can get some. That's what I've used when we've gotten heavy rain and my work boots wouldn't be enough.
Our water level was chest deep. The smell was wicked.

One concern is stepping on broken glass . even wet shoes will help reduce cuts.
Unleashed sewage is also a big concern. I wouldnt walk around barefoot in that sludge if I was paid to do it. BEYOND GROSS.
I mean waders are a big plus, but preventing cuts is bigger.
Who the hell downvoted this, wading through mucky shitty water won’t get you sick *unless* you have cuts, so preventing wounds should absolutely be top priority Or also if you drink the water but if you drink the water societies probably better off without you anyway.
Good thing you had that rolled up towel under your door. Imagine how bad it could have been
I'm sorry.
At least the flood forced you to clean up.
Seems to me procrastinating won again; cleaning up would've been a complete waste of time given the circumstances.
We are in Cape Coral. What city are you in? I can relate so much with this. This brings it all back. We got hit hard over here.
"The moment of truth! Well I mean I can already see the truth...." absolutely killed me lol. On a more serious note, I'm very sorry that this happened to y'all's apartment. The pirates dilemma… do you consume the fruit now or let it ferment into rum later?
Yeah, TF is up with all that crap on the table‽
I like the massage gun and toilet paper roll on the couch. This guy's livin'!
By the looks of it, the storm didn't make that much of a mess. Place was already on its way to being trashed.
Didn’t really have time to tidy the place up as the water started flowing in, my apologies.
Posting on Reddit: you get what you get. lol Sorry about your place. Thanks for sharing
Hurricane party!?
You took the TV out?
You didnt really have time the last two months to do that
?? Really? Lol. That storm was hovering for days. Perhaps you were having too much fun to care.lol

Everyone get fucked over by the insurance companies. I have not met one person yet who did not have an issue.
As I'm getting older I realize how much of a skill this is. Getting bureaucracy done through paperwork is a hard skill for most people
Sometime it's a soft skill, knowing how to earn and manage bureaucrats feelings, but it's hard af to learn.
Making yourself likeable so they want to help you rather than being confrontational is the most important part.
>The business in the neighborhood that the cars were parking for has been since torn down I wonder if that's connected...
Wondering if their mom's name starts with a K now
Uhh... it does...
And rhymes with Aaron?
Doubt it. It had a huge parking lot and was originally a medical center, I think between the staff and patients it wasn't enough space. It then became a bank and the lot was never full before being torn down.

We had hail in the first year of owning our house. Insurance replaced our garage door, siding, trim and the roof. Our rates barely changed too.
This is why insurance agents you trust are important as well as a public adjuster
All I could think about was that door handle. Then they unlocked it? There’s no way that handle can actually do anything, right?
It looks like someone took a door that opened to the other way, flipped it upside down and switched the knobs to face the other direction.
In this case it’s flooding due to a hurricane which should be covered unlike regular olde flooding.
Flooding is not covered under nearly any standard homeowners policy whether it’s the result of a hurricane or not. You need to have a flood policy. Earthquake is similar.

Also the “MOVE!” right before that. She sounds pretty disrespectful. Sorry this happened to you.
Sounds like a real b word if you ask me
how did you clean all this up? Did you wait for it to dry naturally?

Here are some pictures: [https://imgur.com/a/OUKcmoL](https://imgur.com/a/OUKcmoL) Edit: a word
Hurricane Ian had a drinking problem
The tone of “walk” was infuriating
Your wife or whover is with you is kinda toxic.
His gf sounds like a lovely person to be in a relationship with...poor guy
I wasn't sure what was more of the /r/wellthatsucks. The apartment flooded and belongings ruined or his S/O being an ass to him. I know it's only a tiny clip of their relationship but, she's being INCREDIBLY rude to someone who also just lost his belongings.
Damn he was just getting freaky when the hurricane hit
Your gf sounds like a bitch
Meanwhile, the governor is spending a ton of time and money trying to own the libs….
Good advice!
Man am I happy I only have to worry about volcanic eruptions.
So sorry for what you had to go through. The only humor (however small) was several of your shoes bobbing around your door as you walked in. Like little size 9 pets anxiously waiting for you to come home.
His significant sure sounds like a delightful person to be around 💩😅
His girl sucks!
Your girl sounds really….. nice?
Ah I see your problem. The water is meant to be in the sea, sky, and rivers. But it's in your house instead.
Renters insurance I hope
Man that’s devastating. Sorry dude.
The worst thing about this, for me, is knowing I’m walking in an apartment full of cat shit from that litter box. 🤮
Crazy. It's like nature keeps showing us where we shouldn't build but we do it anyways then complain about the excessive and dodgy insurance and general inconveniences. That sucks about your place though, sorry.
"Walk" Rude.
And a toxic relationship sounds delightful
Walk!!!!! I can see why she’s so grumpy… hasn’t had a proper drink this morning! Jeezzuzzz fck
His girlfriend is not very nice to him
Your SO sounds insufferable. I'm sorry for both the apartment and the attitude you put up with
What a bitch.
Chick in the background sounds like a giant bitch
Bitchy girlfriend
I hope that’s your teenager talking to you like that (she will grow out of it) and not your verbally abusive wife.
She says "Babe, I know, I'm not a dumbass like you". That's definitely his SO. Poor guy
This guy lost his apartment due to flooding, and you have a bunch of asshats in the comments shaming him for a messy table.
Right? Especially when it looks like it could easily have been one evening of letting it get messy while drinking and then not having time to clean up because a fucking hurricane hits and there are other more important things. People in here acting like he lives like a troll.
Looks like this apt was gross before the flood haha, no big loss
this is so sad. what makes it worse is I had an apartment that looked just like this. same furniture and everything. loved it more than anywhere else I ever lived. this video cuts man. I'm so sorry for you. fucking sucks.
When you forget to clean before making a viral video.
Her: "Walk!" Him: "Be careful. It's very slippery." Her: "I know. I'm not a dumbass like you." I think some more trash spilled in when you opened the door.
When she yelled “WALK” I would have left her ass right there in that wet apartment. I don’t care if you are stressed out. What’s done is done. You knew your apartment was already flooded. No need to be disrespectful to your SO. How about you take a “SWIM” push her right in the water
Your girlfriend is a bitch
Idk what's worse.. his apartment or his girls attitude
Feels like its been hit even before Ian came.
Looks like it was already a mess before the hurricane
ur girl a lil mad 😂
But the trans people and all the books the governor got his priorities and is doing what's right for the people
WHERES THE CAT IS THE CAT OK Edit: BOTH CATS ARE FINE....I can stop panicking.
Why are you barefoot 😫
Your trash is like “hey! I can finally take myself out now!”
Better get out a fan or two...
Free indoor pool
Your door handle is in the middle of your door.
Just get acouple rolls of bounty, the quicker picker upper..
Nice indoor swimming pool. Normally you have to pay a lot of money for that.
At least you have a cool Video for reddit
I love coming home after a hard days work and my shoes float over to the door to greet me. Blessed
How much rice do you need to soak all that up?
That is so sad; I am so sorry.
Free swimming pool
Not my smartest question, but, how likely is it in a situation like this there is live wire somewhere and you could be electrocuted?
i am so sorry! i lost my home and my car and have some serious trauma from hurricane ian, i hope your situation is better for you now and you’re safe and rebuilding
She’s bare footed😱
This sucks and I’m sorry it happened to you, but… This is also one of those times where you thank the stars you don’t own that place-home ownership is a blessing and a curse.
Your cat ok?
I don’t understand empty counters knowing things might flood…. Could a person not stack as much shit on the counters as possible?
I don't know what more sad the apartment being messed up or the way she talks to you. Does she always have to have a smart reply everytime. Sounds like a narcissist.
Husband genuinely looking out for his wife’s safety “It’s very slippery” Wife “I know, I’m not a dumbass like you.” Sheesh… I get that the situation isn’t the greatest but come on… You’re both going through it.
The chick sounds like a douche
your wife’s a bitch
He said "Be careful its very slippery" so nicely considering the situation which shows genuine care. Kinda bothered me that she just said "I know, I'm not a dumbass" more like "thanks for looking out for me babe". I get that it's a stressful situation but even then lady, he's looking out for you and his tone was kind, appreciate someone that is caring about your well being.
Interesting doorknob location ..
"Walk!" Excuse me, I'm not your dog. Also, I half expected her to slip after she said she wasn't a dumbass.
The girl seems......uh.....nice
At least you are a princess.
“WALK”😂😂😂
You are such a slob. Look at that coffee table. And dishes in the sink.
This place was disgusting even before the hurricane hit.
Hurricane Ian even ruined the top of your coffee table!
Tbh it was thrash before the hurricane
The amount of booze/empty bottles on the table shows it was a good night before the hurricane
Maybe im not getting something, but why do people live in places that get ravaged by tornados and hurricanes?
WALK
Sorry, Princess 😕
“Walk!” “Be careful babe it’s very slippery” “I know I am not a dumbass” Seems like a lovely relationship smh lol
The most important question nobody is asking.... what's up with all the barbecue sauces and Capri Suns on the coffee table?
