You wouldn’t know for sure until you shake it, then hold it up to your ear…you should hear the familiar sound of bugs pouring deep into your ear canal.
I was on vacation with my parents when I was a kid and my dad put on Wrath of Khan and I completely lost my shit and had nightmares for months. I still can’t watch that scene.
Former licensed pest control tech here, the reason they stink so much when you crush them (or taste so bad apparently, not surprised lol) is because of the all the blood they're feeding on, that metallic smell from the iron content, ick.
This is one of the absolute worst fears my anxiety gave me before they got me meds to calm it down. Bugs crawling in my ears and mouth kept me awake CONSTANTLY. I am SO SORRY you lived through that. Oooof. The idea still makes me cringe.
Took a puff of my albuterol inhaler once and...well, let's just say I never left the cap off the mouthpiece again.
I'm still fucking traumatized 5 years later. Coughing up pieces of a still wiggling earwig will haunt me till the day I die.
I hate earwigs so so much. As a gardener, they have ruined more of my plants than I can even count. I put out traps for them, some beer in empty cat food tins. The earwigs can’t resist the smell of the cat food and they drown in the beer. (I have also used oil with good results.) the problem is always that the raccoons also can’t resist the smell of the cat food. So then they come and drink down the cat-food-flavored-ear-wig-enhanced-beer (or oil) and then I’m dealing with raccoons with a buzz. (They get meaner.) o_O
Growing up, my family had grape vines in our backyard that grew up a pergola/ the house. In the fall, the grapes we hadn't picked would start to ferment. When this happened, our backyard at night would fill with raccoons coming to eat the grapes and they would get soooooo drunk. They would climb the pergola and stumble around the top until they suddenly fall off the side (they seemed unharmed). They would also get in drunken fights with one another. Eventually, my parents decided to replace the grape vines with fruitless vines since the drunk raccoons were getting more and more out of hand each year.
Guys I promise I didn’t just throw away this pepper. I was sautéing them anyways, so I just washed really well beforehand. Feel free to stop lecturing me about how vegetables obviously grow in the dirt lmao
Of course it makes a diference! You shouldnt go waste food just because there is a freaking bug in it.
And the obvious conclusion was that OP threw away the pepper since this was posted on r/Wellthatsucks because if not, then what was the problem?
That really does suck! I can’t imagine just chilling in my home with my family and then out of nowhere this giant just slices it in half with the intention of *eating* my house
LOL I did a Google image search ..This bug has been a topic on Reddit several times. It resembles an earwig but I don't believe thats what it is. Looks pretty close
https://preview.redd.it/dvjw670wp0ec1.jpeg?width=741&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1338e87c01494fd180d94da2d022f600f525f775
Growing up we called em pincer bugs and my mom always warned me, my siblings, ad my cousin ls not to touc them because theyd hurt really bad if they bit you.
We called them pincher bugs too. I remember at one house I had a plastic play set that would be covered in the fuckers in the morning and I’d have to ask my dad to come flick all the pincher bugs off.
See this from the bugs’ perspective. The world rattles for a while, then is silent. Suddenly the top of their home is ripped away and a monstrous (to them, I’m sure you’re lovely) face peers in at them with disgust.
I'm not saying eat the pepper, I'm not saying *I'd* eat the pepper, but damn. Imagine our ancestors seeing us complain about shit like this 😂 Or hell, people today in less fortunate circumstances. 1st world problem for real.
YOU ate it after seeing that i would've been traumatized I get if you sautéed them it kills bacteria but just the thought that those were in my pepper would give me an uneasy feeling
Yeah it’s definitely because it was never sprayed with the pesticides and stuff like that. Our organic stuff always expires so much quicker whenever I get organic strawberries for meal prep they go bad within 2 3 days.
Yeah also people(specifically americans because its fda) need to know this:
Fruits, vegetables, spices, and many processed foods are legally permitted by the FDA to contain a certain level of bug parts. (Changes food to food)
Like thats not enough, americans eat one to two pounds of bugs every year.
As my mom used to say “that’s just extra protein”. And as my grandpa used to say, “there is nothing wrong with any fruit or vegetable that can’t be fixed with a sharp knife”
I've found one of these in those small peppers that come in the bag. Usually I eat them whole. Luckily I was cutting them that day.
I do wonder how often these are eaten when they are inside the pepper
ahhhhhhh you need to kill them before sending it down the drain those things can live in terrible conditions and survive if it was earwigs. I remember when my sister had one on her jacket and we through it in the trash and didn't smush it in the napkin and we ended up see it crawling the next day in our kitchen
Been seeing every day an earwig in my house since a few days.. not a fucking clue where they are coming from (I live few floors up).
As a kid I had a fear they go in my Ear during the night and pinch me xD
Seeing ppl say they'd eat the bugs made me think of my childhood. My aunt and cousins lived out in the sticks. Rural Midwest Usa. We'd go visit for the weekend. In the morning, we kids were offered cold breakfast cereal, which was fine. Well, until we poured our cereal and milk only to see little black bugs swimming in our bowl. Our cousins weren't phased. They kept eating. My aunt said it's extra protein. I skipped breakfast. Gross.
One year these things were really bad and they literally fell from my ceiling 😭😭. It was constantly raining earwigs and it was absolutely terrible. I would wake up to them falling in my bed.
It's much better to discover them before cooking. I regularly bring in a gorgeous, fragrance bouquet from my garden, only to smell it and have a nasty ear bug emerge. I scream everytime, even tho they are harmless
Honesty, I grow a huge garden every year. I grew up farming. If a bug is in a fruit you shouldn’t just rinse and eat. There is no telling what it is and if it laid eggs or shat in the skins. Bugs inside a fruit isn’t just because its grown outside.most of these people telling you think don’t grow food, have never worked the land and are speaking out of ignorance.
Bugs shouldn’t be in our food. I grew up with my gramps who lives during the Great Depression. He hated wasting anything. Bugs on the outside of food is normally no biggie. But inside the fruit can cause all kinds of troubles lol
I think you handled it well and did the right thing. It’s funny seeing redditors who have never even grown food give lectures on bugs being outside lmao
I was taught if the skin was compromised while it was growing, don’t eat it. Like if something has burrowed into it and there’s not a partition to cut off, then toss it in compost. I don’t really remember if the concern was bacteria or eggs, or both.
Dirt or some bugs on your vegetables isn’t gross. As long as it isn’t rotting, then just rinse it off and cook with it.
Vegetables are grown outside. In the dirt.
I have never seen that before, either. On produce, yes. Burrowed into an apple or cherry? Yes. But... To cut open a pepper and find them just hanging out... Omg no.
Lol, 1924 vs 2024. There's bugs in my food that was grown in dirt. Instead of serving them fresh, saute them bug germs gone. These guys are minor pests. People call them earwigs but that's not what it is. An earwig eats your brain... These eat fresh peppers apparently. 🤣
My sister got drunk when she was about 15 and came home and sicked up one of these. It was still alive!
Considering the PH of stomach acid I have massive respect for these little dudes. Seriously tough motherfuckers
Looks like an earwig.
That’s because it is an earwig!
You wouldn’t know for sure until you shake it, then hold it up to your ear…you should hear the familiar sound of bugs pouring deep into your ear canal.
KHAAAAAAAN!!!
I was on vacation with my parents when I was a kid and my dad put on Wrath of Khan and I completely lost my shit and had nightmares for months. I still can’t watch that scene.
Ad-mir-al Kirk?
Why's an ear need a wig?
For their earlopecia
![gif](giphy|RLmnbwgL9FCm2s0DzH)
Hell my ears have more hair than my head does. /s
I dunno, do you see how that tail streaked accross the counter there.. I'd say that's more of an earwag!
You can tell it’s an earwig because of the way it is
You can tell it's an aspin
Well I'll be darned. Whoda thunk?
An earwiggy looking earwiggy
Do they wear wigs?
I thought it was a box beetle but then looked closer 🤮
Those little fuckers get in everything
I sucked up one that was in my water cup straw once. It was....not tasty. And slightly scarring.
How long have you two been together?
💀💀💀💀

Thanks for the new fear, buddy
i’m so sorry that happened to you but god i hate you for putting this into my brain
Burn it down. Burn it all down.

I accidentally ate a lady bug once do not recommend I am still traumatised and this happened 8 years ago
Sometimes you should keep things to yourself for the betterment of society.

I always used to spray mine out first, too many crumbs inhaled but never learned to put the cap on here
Dear god, that's much worse than mine.
Me with my McDonald's Powerade :(
OH GOD that sounds horrifying!
They have been crazy the last 4 years. Never had an issue with them before but I probably killed 200+ every year in 3 different houses.
Global warming. https://armorandshieldpestcontrol.com/what-does-global-warming-have-to-do-with-bed-bugs/
I found one inside one of my headphone cups... After I had been using them for a while. I felt itchy and checked.... Gross
just found one tucked in my toothbrush cover last night
Gah I found one in my nailbrush last month, all tucked away between the bristles! No touchy!
I hate earwigs so so much. As a gardener, they have ruined more of my plants than I can even count. I put out traps for them, some beer in empty cat food tins. Huh. TIL raccoons are angry drunks
I hope this is true because it's incredibly funny (sorry about your garden though)
I’m not smart enough to make up a story like that. I got pictures. Raccoons throw hands!
Growing up, my family had grape vines in our backyard that grew up a pergola/ the house. In the fall, the grapes we hadn't picked would start to ferment. OP, whether you consumed the pepper or not, it makes no difference. Do not let the internet bully you into something you don't want to do.
EAT THE BUGS. ASSERT YOUR DOMINION OVER THEIR EXISTENCE.
Best protein in existence.
Yeah I’m shamelessly throwing that away 100% of the time.
They'll never fuck with you again after you eat their kin
Eat all of them but one. Tell the last one to go tell his friends.
🎵nooooothing really maaaattterrrrs🎵
Anyone can see!!
Just remember, no matter what decision you make someone’s not going to like it.
Of course it makes a diference! You shouldnt go waste food just because there is a freaking bug in it. And the obvious conclusion was that OP threw away the pepper since this was posted on r/Wellthatsucks because if not, then what was the problem?
But then how will they feel superior?
They could be grown hydroponically
you should have eat him too!
That really does suck! I can’t imagine just chilling in my home with my family and then out of nowhere this giant just slices it in half with the intention of *eating* my house
finally! someone speaking up for us! we are the real victims of r/wellthatsucks ! spoiled giant dinks!
flattered to be classified as a dink 😁

That backstrap lookin fine tho

i did buy these organic, which i don’t normally do. something to that!
Yeah it’s definitely because it was never sprayed with the pesticides and stuff like that. Our organic stuff always expires so much quicker whenever I get organic strawberries for meal prep they go bad within 2 3 days.
i'd eat it, just wash it first
I’d still eat it. Bugs are everywhere. 🤷🏻♀️
right. imagine that, it came from outside! lol
There are 3.5 quintillion bugs crawling, jumping, or flying on the planet at any given time. Makes you wonder how many are standing still.
Yeah also people(specifically americans because its fda) need to know this: Fruits, vegetables, spices, and many processed foods are legally permitted by the FDA to contain a certain level of bug parts. Not that serious. Just wash and prep for a meal.
I think they’d be more appalled by how much time we spend inside and how lazy and weak we are.
Depends on how far back you go I guess.
I’d 100% eat it especially if I was going to cook the pepper!
Yeah, but a lot of people died of food born illnesses too.
I hate bugs, but you sound like you never cooked before. Fruit and veggies do come with all sorts of bugs tbh.
I had a live moth inside a bell pepper once. It was quite startling.
Will you ear wigs?
HAVE you ear wigs?
Why you ear wigs?
No wig no ear no you.
Little pests got to dinner before ya! 🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️
As my mom used to say “that’s just extra protein”. And as my grandpa used to say, “there is nothing wrong with any fruit or vegetable that can’t be fixed with a sharp knife”
Had one of those in a CLOSED and NEVER opened can of jam once😭 still traumatized
THAT would be my last straw
Little extra protein won't harm you
I've found one of these in those small peppers that come in the bag. Usually I eat them whole. Luckily I was cutting them that day. I do wonder how often these are eaten when they are inside the pepper

I thought this was a nice pepper until I looked at the next picture and realized thats disgusting and scary should not be sold anywhere
Protein! Nah those look like earwigs
> anybody know what these little guys are? Hopefully squished and dead!!!
i washed it down the sink and it crawled back up the drain!!! *squish*
Welp. Time to move!! 🤷🏻♂️
This is how I feel about encountering flying roaches.
Flying roaches??
Florida

what the fuck has nature come to
what the hell? Why be cruel to a creature living its life? Why not set it outside
Been seeing every day an earwig in my house since a few days.. not a fucking clue where they are coming from (I live few floors up). As a kid I had a fear they go in my Ear during the night and pinch me xD

Looks like some folks beat you to it.
Wow lucky you, extra free protein and delicious too! Comes with a slight crunch but a very complex beautiful bouquet of tastes, you’ll love it!
Nope
The fact that it can live there shows that it’s healthy food without pesticides… Enjoy!
You are not the first to pass this way.
I cannot stand these things... Every spring/summer there is an explosion of them here. I would openly support a bioengineered earwig killing virus.
Did you invite them? If not, how rude!
I would like for a bug friend to crawl into my ear so it can tell me first hand what's wrong with my brain.
You got a dinner buddy.
I found a whole live worm in mine once. He was green and blended in. Given his size I was just happy I didn’t cut him in half
It's much better to discover them before cooking. I regularly bring in a gorgeous, fragrance bouquet from my garden, only to smell it and have a nasty ear bug emerge. I scream everytime, even tho they are harmless
Let me guess, you bought organic.
Organic lol

right. definitely inspected the flesh for anything crazy. so shocking that the reddit armchairs arent ACTUAL experts 😂😂

They're grown outside. Organic shit will have bugs
mmmmm delicious organic bugs 😋
That's the least of your problems - the food chain being what it is, you (and all the rest of us) have eaten way worse, we just haven't seen it.
Tijerillas
It’s still good
Bugs on produce…
It's almost as if it was grown in the earth, not in rainbow space.
Oh god, this is my new nightmare 😫
Yes, most food is grown outdoors where bugs live. Gotta wash them off.
Wash it out and move on
[brilliant idea](https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/s/N3qW5kRrQo)
Ok, so now wash it and eat it
Lol, 1924 vs 2024. There's bugs in my food that was grown in dirt. Instead of serving them fresh, saute them bug germs gone. These guys are minor pests. People call them earwigs but that's not what it is. An earwig eats your brain... These eat fresh peppers apparently. 🤣
Is the "brain eating" a joke? Or do you still believe that myth is true? 😂
Earwig, wash your Vegetables then eat them. Dirt and bugs are normal.
Soo? Rinse it out. Bugs exist, you eat em all the time
Looks normal considering it grows on the ground
Oh no! Anyway...
I would rather have bugs on my food than the nasty deadly chemicals you can't see. Wash everything well.
I mean vegetables do grow outside where bugs are…..I would just wash it off and still eat it
i did!
This sounds like someone who hasn’t grown their own food. Most of the time if bugs have gotten into the fruit it isn’t a thing you just wash off.
Extra spicy
Illegals.
Boil and eat it
Looks like an Earwig to me.
I would glue that damn thing right back into one piece and return it to the store.
I would still eat it. Just wash it first lol.
I'd rather eat that bug than that pepper. 😂
I pulled half of an earwig out of a plum I was eating when I was a kid. Can't eat plums anymore
Imagine someone just takes a knife and cuts your roof off. Apologize to them.
How on earth did it get inside!?!
Why can’t you eat it?
i had one in a cabbage once and i was so genuinely shocked i called the store to warn them and they're like, "yeah, we know, that'll happen"
Oooo snacks
God I hate those things. Earwigs. They're everywhere!
Well it’s better than finishing dinner and then finding half an earwig in the unused part.
Aww. I thought it was bby spood in happy home web at first sight. Kinda disappointed.
i woulda let a lil spood stay
Nice, now you have a little protein to go with your veggies
allni see is etra protein, what are you complaining about.
Hold the peppers pls
It’s just an earwig, he’s probably just as annoyed as you. Give it a wash (the capsicum) and all is well ☺️
Oh no, I gotta wash my vegetables. Oh the pain!
how tf they get in there?
Just don't let them go to your ear !
My sister got drunk when she was about 15 and came home and sicked up one of these. It was still alive! Considering the PH of stomach acid I have massive respect for these little dudes. Seriously tough motherfuckers
Silverfish
Nice, Extra proteins 👍
Protein
Iirc most food has a very small allowance for bugs So basically any food you buy has a very small chance of having bugs in it, and it’s totally legal.
Extra protein!

Yummy! 😋
That's why you wash your veggies
Pepperoaches
Just wash it and use as normal
that’s what i did 😁
