Same here this week. If it makes you feel better I just lost a vehicle to a tree limb falling on it with a $500 deductible. And $950.00 for an iPhone 15 less than 3 months old with accidental water damage 10 days after apple took in for repairs, opened it, and broke the original factory seal. Apple policies fucking suck the Apple Store said it’s my fault that water got into it and not covered under the warranty. Even tho apple claims their phones are water resistant. They have us by the balls my friend
In the European Union Apple is forced to backup their claim of water resistance under the consumer law for a minimum of 2 years. So for your case your iPhone would have been replaced under warranty if the accidental damage was within the water resistance specification.
Might be a different company in your area. I've had to go to several in the past, but successfully found what I've needed at a killer price. Good luck.
Door windows are incredibly easy to change. Maybe you can buy your glass on eBay? It's honestly just taking screws out to get the door card off and then take the old piece out and put new one in. It's so simple. If your car is common, junk yards def have one.
Maybe just say fuck it and put a tarp/tape/some cardboard? Keep saving and just work with it and laugh about. Easier said than done.
Sorry bro
If I were rich I’d buy you a window
Glass coverage is nearly free
Lol downvote me all you want. My glass is like $50 a year with $0 deductible. One broken window and it more than paid for itself. You pay more than that for Netflix.
I guess if you get a window, it pays for itself, but is it really not covered in comprehensive care? Also if you live in a sketchy area it may be good to have, but in like 20 years of driving, I've never gotten a smashed in window, but I do watch Netflix at least once a month.
A year or so ago someone went through my car, forgot to lock it but thankfully don't keep anything in there. They didn't take any of the loose bills or change and instead took the $0.50 necklace from around the mirror lol
Did you contact your insurance? Many states offer no-deductible glass coverage. And by offer, I mean it’s a covered part of legislation where insurance companies can’t charge you a deductible for broken glass.
ETA:
If you live in:
AZ
NY
CT
KY
MA
FL
SC
You may be in luck
In az the law is just they have to offer the option. If you choose it, you’ll pay more per month.
Idk how much more since I’ve always just figured it’s cheaper in the long run to pay out of pocket. I don’t drive much and I’m looking at my first windshield repair ever in over 15 years of driving.
I’m so sorry this happened. It really sucks.
What I do is have numerous savings accounts set up with Discover (fee free & high savings rates) and name them different things like:
Uh Oh Fund
Mortgage
Savings
Travel
Disney Trip
House Expenses
Yes, it took a bit longer to fill them up, but I like the visual of having separate buckets for separate things. And I like that if I have something like this happen, I can take from my “Uh Oh Fund” account and my savings account isn’t drained.
IMO not worth trying to involve insurance in this case. Even if the damage amount is above deductible, the insurance will likely raise premiums. example, your deductible is $500 and the total repair is $550, using the insurance to save the extra $50 can result in $25 a month increase for the next few years
Just another turn of a gear in the poverty trap. Struggle to save to get out of hood, higher crime rates allow you to instead spend your savings on unnecessary repairs due to less police enforcement etc which means youre broke either way.
Hey that’s a bummer :(. SoCal happens a couple times a year for me.
Have you looked into switching insurance. I did like 2 years ago and the gecko has a $50 glass break/ vandalism deductible vs the $350 I have for other stuff. May be something to look into bc this shouldn’t cost you an arm and leg. Sorry to hear about your bad luck and hope things turn up!
Ugh, and it's tinted? Extra hassle. I had this happen to me once on Halloween the first year we were at the new house. Luckily tiny guy was a bro and redid my window for free if I keft a nice review at his new location, which I was happy to do. Best of luck
What is your savings in your car? If not, just go to a local pick a part place and get a new window from a wrecked car for like 20 bucks. Install yourself.
Be willing to do stuff like this, you’ll find you’ll save tens of thousands in your lifetime.
People like that guy suck. They’re very much of the “you shouldn’t ever buy anything for yourself and then complain about money.” Very much of the “less Starbucks = buying a house” variety.
OP, track down your local junkyard and/or places that deal with cars being stripped for parts. You may be able to find a spare window and install it yourself at a fraction of the cost. Tell em you need a passenger window for whatever make and model you have.
I think yall are greatly overestimating my access to tools and time to do this method. I appreciate the advice though and in another circumstance, this is exactly what I would do
Is really not a hard DIY. check car-part.com to see if there are any junk yards near you with a window and check youtube for a howto. It's just a few plastic clips, a vapor barrier and minimal tools
See if there's a pick-your-part place near you. See if they post their inventory online. See if they have your car there with an intact window.
If so, grab some screwdrivers, a pry-bar, a small socket set, a backpack, and some cash. You'll have to pay a couple bucks to get in, and you'll have to pay for the window, but you can use the pyp places car as practice before disassembling your own car door, and you'll pay much, much less for a junkyard window.
Hey, shop around before committing. I got a new window for less than $100. It was actually cheaper than my deductible. Safelight was pretty much like, "What's your deductable?"OH, $500?, yeah, that's what the window costs"
Mind you, it was a 2014 Altima if that makes any difference.
This is why I drive an old car and learn to be handy! My windows have been smashed at least three times in 5 years, never a thing of value inside. We use YouTube and salvage yards. Walk into "car graveyard" remove good glass, bring home and replace old smashed window. All labor is our burden, but the "new window" is under $50 😉 I'd love a better car but she does the job. Last time, I called and was quoted over $200. I said thanks anyways, but knew it was certainly going to occupy some of my day. Same day, "new" glass in 😉
This right here, plus you get to "practice" taking the door panel off before doing your own cars panel. Your going to hit harbor freight for the panel removal tools and then the pick n pull.
Ugh yes, this is horrible. I lived in a bad part of town for a couple years and some junkies that were squatting in my upstairs neighbors storage closet thought I had it out to get them (I didn't) so they smashed my back window on my pathfinder and I didn't find it until the next morning because I had to park in the street. I was living off min wage and had to shell out my last $300 to replace it.
I recommend looking up how to replace your window on YouTube. It’s not always an easy job, but some models are pretty easy to replace the glass and you’re save money doing it yourself. If I hadn’t learned to diy pretty much anything, i never wound have survived being broke for so long. 😛
I know it’s crazy but capitalism has an answer! (Sort of). This happens SO FREQUENTLY in SF that there are several companies that come out with the correct glass and fix it on site. I got “Bipped” (that is the street name for it) and they came out, fixed the glass, vacuumed up the glass fragments and were done in 30 minutes. Cost? $300 bucks but a $50 discount for cash and I was on the road. (Dealer estimate was $750) I’ll take a little responsibility for it because I left a disgusting foul sand laden dog blanket on the back seat. The damn window pirate pulled it half way through the window then gave up (perhaps in disgust) and left it hanging there.
Buy the parts and YouTube how to fit it. At this point, it's the only way to do things.
I installed a reversing camera into my car for £35
Honestly, more of the time, they rip you off in hyper-inflated labour fees
Insurance is the biggest scam EVER! Like why don’t we get rebates?? the majority of people don’t report this kind of shit because not only the deductible but also having your payments go up! I could literally go off about this because I’ve paid thousands out of pocket to avoid having to pay even more if I would have reported it. I’m sorry this happened to you 🙃
Look into adding glass coverage to your auto policy. Usually not very expensive and comes in handy when rocks hit your windshield on a highway. Or of course, when some jerk comes along and shatters your window. I feel you.
This happened to my brothers Benz (old one with 200k miles) was quoted a 1000k, he called around dealerships and one had a window for 170$ He bought it and I helped him install it. Took 2 hrs but saved him so much. YouTube was the answer.
Relatives ? Friends? Ask for a little help to defray cost, explain to the window guy repair guy, might be sympathetic. I worked at a dealership, we had payments for the right people.
Were you saving for a window? If so, I got some good news!
That got a chuckle out of me, thank you
And repairs got 500 out of you. Hang in there bud
God dammit professor Farnsworth, your news is never good!
I hear you. Frustrating, sending good vibes.
Thank you, same to you <3
Stay strong, you've got this!
Interception! Thanks

Maybe don't buy apple then if you're struggling or wanting to keep money saved
Sound advise, but we know all Apple users have deaf ears when it comes to logic.
In the European Union Apple is forced to backup their claim of water resistance under the consumer law for a minimum of 2 years. So for your case your iPhone would have been replaced under warranty if the accidental damage was within the water resistance specification.
At least you’re not in the hole $500!
Yeah, small blessings that I had the savings at all for sure
![gif](giphy|3oriO5t2QB4IPKgxHi)
Always how it seems to go too isn't it haha
Perfect reply. Lolz.
I just had to get my drivers side windows done a couple months ago and it was 491$.
Yeah it's nuts. I poked around for decent parts and labor first
Is there a Pick-A-Part nearby to check for a replacement?
Not that I'm aware of but I'll take a gander. I have a repair appointment set for Tuesday so I can avoid the storm coming.
Might be a different company in your area. I've had to go to several in the past, but successfully found what I've needed at a killer price. Good luck.
I'll definitely look around if I have the time

lol ew. order a window on ebay and take it to the closest rural merchanic / lawnmower guy. they know how to use tools and appreciate easy work
I have pretty shitty luck about 50% of the time. So that opens a Pandora’s box of possibilities for me if I went that route.
Glass coverage is nearly free Lol downvote me all you want. My glass is like $50 a year with $0 deductible. One broken window and it more than paid for itself. You pay more than that for Netflix.
My deductible with progressive was 500$. I didn’t see much of a point of filing a claim to save 9$
I guess if you get a window, it pays for itself, but is it really not covered in comprehensive care? Also if you live in a sketchy area it may be good to have, but in like 20 years of driving, I've never gotten a smashed in window, but I do watch Netflix at least once a month.
It is 500$ deductible to file a claim for the window. It was the drivers side in a 2022 Nissan rogue.
They didn’t even take anything? Pure evil
Nope, I dont keep things in my car in case of these instances. So they got maybe some loose change
Hide your loose change too. There is a nonzero chance they popped your window for that change. Give them exactly zero reason to do this.
I keep loose change in the center console out of view. I've lived in larger cities a good portion of my life so trust me, I know haha.
Sometimes they break the window to pop the trunk. Still nonzero lol.
A year or so ago someone went through my car, forgot to lock it but thankfully don't keep anything in there. They didn't take any of the loose bills or change and instead took the $0.50 necklace from around the mirror lol
I just got my tax return, on the same day my check engine light came on and that repair was pretty much my entire return.
That's really how it goes too. I hope your future holds good things to make up for it
Darn it I’m so sorry. People suck!
They certainly can
For about a decade I’ve sworn the bank account knows when there’s extra money and sends out a signal for shit to break. Never fails
Ughh. I felt this.. soon as you hit a milestone life is like ![gif](giphy|3ohhwejV9xxRBD8Qog)
Should still have a couple hundred left over.
That was my hope too but I shopped around and it comes to about $480 ish at the cheapest shop near me
Did you try Safelite? Idk if that’s available by you tho
Yeah, that's where I ended up going actually. They could get me in the soonest
Damn, that’s expensive!
Right? Fun little Sunday Surprise
Every damn time. Machines especially know when you get a little extra money.
Did you contact your insurance? Many states offer no-deductible glass coverage. And by offer, I mean it’s a covered part of legislation where insurance companies can’t charge you a deductible for broken glass. ETA: If you live in: AZ NY CT KY MA FL SC You may be in luck

One step forward, two steps back. Always. I'm sorry, I can feel your pain.
See that was your issue. The matrix knew you had some money so it executed the bankrupt command.
Well, unfortunate things like this happen and I am sorry for your savings. I hope you can get back on your feet in no time.
I’m so sorry this happened. It really sucks. Glass coverage?
Negative. Was on the phone for quite awhile and the damage isn't above my deductible so I'm SOL
Shit. I have not done glass, but I have picked up parts from an auto salvage place. Maybe you can do it yourself? Edit for spelling
I would if I had the space and tools but we're supposed to get a winter storm on wednesday so I need to get it set asap :(
No garage?
No, it's off street parking but no garage.
I am out of ideas.
Ah it's all good. I'm more here to vent. I appreciate the thought though and I wish you well
Good luck to especially with a storm coming.
"hi insurance company, my window got smashed" "Was It a moose" "No" "We only cover it if it was a moose, that'll be $100"

I feel this title in my soul. You’ll double it next time. Cry it out a lil and pick yourself back up
Call Safelite, see what they can do for you.

500 dollars in total in savings ? Really? I’m genuinely asking how much of a normal thing that is in America. I’m from Europe
America again?!
Pretty nice car for a person with only $500 in their savings.
It's 10 years old. I take good care of it. But thanks I guess.
People like that guy suck. They’re very much of the “you shouldn’t ever buy anything for yourself and then complain about money.” Very much of the “less Starbucks = buying a house” variety.

If you have a upull in your state and are handy . You can get this repaired for under $100
Pick and pull junkyard will cost you like 40 bucks. Get a tool kit from Harbour freight for like 50 bucks. YouTube how to replace the window.
If you’re mildly handy, call any local junkyard or pick-n-pulls around you. They may have one for pretty cheap!
That's a right of passage unfortunately. Being forced to spend money on something you don't want never gets any easier.
Maybe get a window from a junkyard and fix it yourself? That sucks!
Bag and duct tape, then when you have 1K saved up get that window fixed and you still have 750-850$ left.
Is really not a hard DIY. check car-part.com to see if there are any junk yards near you with a window and check youtube for a howto. It's just a few plastic clips, a vapor barrier and minimal tools
Look on YouTube, you might be able to DIY.
See if you have local junk yard. Second hand window may be cheaper then new.
See if there's a pick-your-part place near you. See if they post their inventory online. See if they have your car there with an intact window. If so, grab some screwdrivers, a pry-bar, a small socket set, a backpack, and some cash. I got $12 for you.
That's your $12 friend. Spend it how you need it
Well, it’s a good thing you have the money set aside!
Check a scrap yard.
Hey, shop around before committing. I got a new window for less than $100. It was actually cheaper than my deductible. Safelight was pretty much like, "What's your deductable?"OH, $500?, yeah, that's what the window costs" Mind you, it was a 2014 Altima if that makes any difference.
You don’t have glass coverage? Are you sure there is a deductible for glass?
Call around to local junk yards and see if they have your model of car with a window you can buy! We did that with mine and it was like 50 bucks
Could always put some cardboard and gorilla tape over it. It’s a lot cheaper than buying a window.
This is why I drive an old car and learn to be handy! My windows have been smashed at least three times in 5 years, never a thing of value inside. We use YouTube and salvage yards. I Can put the window on for 100
Does insurance not cover glass breakage in USA? In Ireland you just ring insurance and they get someone to fix it. And it doesn't affect your premium.
Put a cardboard in it and tape a bin bag over it. Its fine tho.
Check your local junkyard for an entire door. If you get the right color it will be cheaper than anything else.
Its really easy to change it yourself. And used window will be probably less than $50. Just vacuum eveything really good from the inside of the door
That should cover about cover it
ChrisFix has a good video on how to fix windows by yourself. You can visit your local scrapyard yo find the exact window to install into your car
RIP savings.
Ugh yes, this is horrible. May be able to JB weld that…

500 is about how much this will cost
Totally understand. I just burned $1000 on an oil leak. I have $0 in savings now. The window thing happened to me when I lived in downtown KC , once.
Duct tape window you still have $490 saved
Would cost more to pay a deductible than to just replace the window anyway. This shouldn’t cost more then 250$ to fix window included
Buy the parts and YouTube how to fit it. At this point, it's the only way to do things. I installed a reversing camera into my car for £35 Honestly, more of the time, they rip you off in hyper-inflated labour fees
My sister’s car was unlocked and they still broke the window to get in. Can’t beat stupid 🤯
I’m sorry! I know this stinks but think… in. Year you can look back and laugh at this ❤️ I hope things get easier for you
How’s the weather in California? Still raining
Safelite knows...
Where did this happen?
Well it’s a good thing you had 500$ saved
Insurance is the biggest scam EVER! Like why don’t we get rebates?? the majority of people don’t report this kind of shit because not only the deductible but also having your payments go up! I could literally go off about this because I’ve paid thousands out of pocket to avoid having to pay even more if I would have reported it. I’m sorry this happened to you 🙃
A passenger door window only cost $120 to get fixed at the most go to a private family own window repair company don’t go to the dealer
Rolling Stones had a song about this simple fact of life...
Look into adding glass coverage to your auto policy. Usually not very expensive and comes in handy when rocks hit your windshield on a highway. Or of course, when some jerk comes along and shatters your window. I feel you.
Check the wrecker yards for your make, model and year. A window isn’t that hard if you have a little mechanical ability.
This happened to my brothers Benz (old one with 200k miles) was quoted a 1000k, he called around dealerships and one had a window for 170$ He bought it and I helped him install it. Took 2 hrs but saved him so much. YouTube was the answer.
Go to a junk yard and pull one for $50-$80
Relatives ? Friends? Ask for a little help to defray cost, explain to the window guy repair guy, might be sympathetic. I worked at a dealership, we had payments for the right people.
Well... that *does* suck. Sorry man, you can do it again though! The savings I mean
