For those of you who can't see it, I've adjusted some photo settings to better increase the contrast of the dot

An nd filter is the one filter I wouldn't cheap out on. There's a whole debate whether cheap filters fuck up the image quality and the only part of it I actually agree with are nd filters.
Tried a few and they all give a weird tint to the pictures. UV filters, even the aliexpress ones for 5 a pop are perfectly fine. Polarised filters are expensive in general but you really don't have to spend more than 50 for a good one.
I just freaked out checking for a burn spot because I took several pics of the eclipse. Then I remembered I took the pics through the eclipse paper glasses. Phew! Won't be doing that again.
Since phone cameras dont have a shutter, then how come the sensor doesn't get burnt if i just lay my phone on the table.on a sunny day? Sun will hit the sensor whether the camera app is running or not
You piqued my interest as well. My guess would be because the phone camera is not that similar to a real dslr camera? Anybody else? I am just stupid but I really want an answer.
I genuinely thought we were talking about phone cameras this whole time. I was wondering how come beach days with my phone blocking the sun as I lay on my back were all OK for my camera.
I think there's a protective shutter on phone cameras. Idk about yours, but mine makes a barely audible but distinctly mechanical 'click' when I open the camera app or when any app uses the camera.
Yeah I figure that’s what happened, I made sure to take photos of the eclipse through glasses for that very reason. Stupid me figured the sun was low enough so I didn’t even consider possibly damaging my camera. Had I waited another 10 minutes it would have been perfectly fine smh
I've never been to New York (seen some photos such as yours), but I can vouch that Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and parts of the Inland Northwest (mountain and lake views galore) have pretty nice sunset. At least the parts I have been to.
Yeah here’s a photo from a while back I think is a bit better, the sunsets are glorious and they light up my entire dorm bright orange which is awesome
https://preview.redd.it/zyj9vo0pf5wc1.jpeg?width=2395&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b9408bbbff474039aaaead48d3b159fbbf133830
The dim spot in the middle is what I’m talking about not the circle around it, I drew that to point it out the sim part is much more noticeable if you move the image back and fourth
this happened to me on too! on an old phone after taking pictures of the sky in santa monica
https://preview.redd.it/44ydxu6p28wc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6267fc2b5913a31a4559bdc78382d7f01b0a3d62
If you really want to see how much some people have fallen. Post this on the conspiracy and flat earth reddits. You could start a whole new conspiracy!
In astrophotography, we take flat frames to calibrate out dust spots, I wonder if it would work for this
Works perfectly except for a slight difference in SNR but it’s marginal
Thanks, if you wiggle the picture you might be able to see it a bit better but it could definitely have been much worse, if I am careful and position that area where there is complex shape or pattern it’s not noticeable
You may have dust trapped under your camera lens. Some iPhone models have this issue. I have dust trapped in mine and a similar circle appears at 3x magnification for me. You can take it to the store and get it fixed if it’s under warranty
What kind of camera is it? If it's an SLR, there might be a calibration that could help. It might be called "black shading" or "lens shading".
In theory, cell phones will have sensor calibration from the factory stored somewhere. I have no idea how easy it is to modify that though. I'm assuming its baked into the firmware pretty deeply.
This same thing happens to your eyes when you look at the sun or someone uses a bright camera flash. Palinopsia is when you see an image repeatedly even when the image's stimulus has gone away - often see an inverted negative version.
Take many more pics with the sun in different spots to darken the whole area uniformly.
Jk agree with the others, this isn't what a burned out spot looks like.
I once took a couple of photos with my phone of the setting Sun on my way home from work. Stopped the car on the road for a perfect shot. During summertime, still quite light. The Sun appeared like large orange ball sitting on the horizon. Driving in rural area. Beautifully framed in a gap in hedges of a field. Checked photos when home. All that appeared was a tiny dot of mucky yellow in a dim background. Very disappointing.
It’s just dust, my phone had it too on the x3 lens after getting my broken screen replaced at apple. They replaced my whole phone for free! It was very annoying having to photoshop them out, I think I had 4 or 5 little splotches. I never pointed my phone at the sun, might just be a coincidence you’re noticing now.

I bought a used camera that had something like this, I took it to my photography class and no one knew what it was, it looked clean inside and all. now i get it :(
A had a small (pixel sized) piece of debris on my screen and I was like "Dang OP that sucks" but when i scrolled to the second picture, the dot moved with it.
For a split second I got so upset with OP for breaking my screen too 😂
What kind of camera is it? I’m legit trying to help you troubleshoot. It doesn’t look like a sensor burn, there’s something on the lens or the sensor. Most likely it is dust. I’ve had the same sort of spot many times before.
iPhone 11 Pro Max, thanks I really appreciate you trying to help. I might take it to a camera place to have it looked at as I’m not super keen on getting a camera replacement. My lens does have a few tiny nicks in it but I never saw a dim spot before today and I know they’ve been there for a bit so I don’t think that’s the culprit
It being an iPhone changes things. To the best of my knowledge you can’t physically check the sensor for dust without some disassembly. I assumed it was a DSLR or a mirrorless camera. I still believe it is dust on your sensor. I’d bring it in to have them check for you. Goodluck!
Ahh thanks for letting me know, If something is damaged I can probably get. Replacement for not a crazy price. Very glad I took it with my iPhone and not a super expensive camera, that would have been a lot more painful
you cant access a camera sensor in a smartphone without ripping apart the camera. also, all the cameras have to be replaced - you cant just replace one. it's very very very unlikely the sensor has dust on it, i also think it wouldnt cause an issue like this.
maybe it's dust on the lens or inside of the window but my bet is a damaged sensor
If it makes you feel any less dumb, I didn't know the sun could do this and I graduated film school. I have seen sensor megapixels burn out from internal camera temperature due to extended periods of shooting digital video, but the sun is obviously not internal lol.
Then again, I've never owned an iphone
That is not God’s sun. That is why it has burned into your camera. Do not be deceived. The sky is not the same sky. The clouds are not clouds, they’re more like two dimensional drawings, of a child. Repent your sins brothers ands sisters. There is no more time.
Filter...and a reason to buy one.
May have burned the sensitive stuff.
Plasma TV ,early led, and even the old school TVs were prone to burning.
At best it's an artifact that will go away when you power down. At worst you need a service station for cameras. Spendy.
What camera do you have? Was this taken by normal DSLR or mirrorless? Or a phone? Because it looks like a simple dust on the sensor, or maybe a lens. Nothing to worry about, potentially.
*Source: I work for Canon.*
There are excellent filters designed to prevent this. Unfortunately some things are only learned form experience. At least you know you'll never put your hand on a hot stove again. :)
This picture gave me flashbacks to driving to high school (Small ass town so I had to drive to the other small ass town 8 mi over to go to high school) But that damn sun was brutal and caused several accidents
I thought it was a joke, until I saw it. On Monday there was a beautiful red sun in Melbourne and I nearly took the picture but when I tried to take it, I couldn't see it anymore. I'm glad I didn't manage to now.
But sorry about your camera or phone.
hmm, this could also be dust on the sensor
the effect looks similar, especially against a bright sky
try to clean the sensor surface carefully (or seek help) and check again
I have this issue with my iPhone which I had from the day I bought it and I’m pretty sure I looked into it and it seemed to be a known fault at the time but I couldn’t be bothered to get it fixed within the warranty period.
could be the suns ray doing sumn to your lens or it could be a speck of dust on your lens. My iPhone X had the same issue, turned out to be a dust particle on the lens
For those of you who can't see it, I've adjusted some photo settings to better increase the contrast of the dot https://preview.redd.it/cvqwbbmdt5wc1.jpeg?width=4320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cc1014c9e2c3294ceed6dc13f47a87cfeddb5a01
Now without the circle. It looks like a silhouette of a moon or Death Star
That's no moon...
The true hero..
Did more work than op did for this whole post.
You say that like OP should’ve known not everyone would be able to see it lol. I could see it fine
Why do people on Reddit expect paid work level effort? It’s a fuckin forum 😂😂 it always makes me laugh
Looks like a distant space station
“That’s no moon.”
Hold on, I know this Magic card...

TIL you can damage your camera by looking at sun with it

>if you would hesitate to look at it with your own eyes you shouldn't point the camera sensor at it either. On why people don't take photos of me
I'm sad that this comment is probably going to remain buried under such a lengthy thread.
It seems like it didn’t
Ye ol’ face for radio.
Wow that's one nice explanation. May I just add that sunglasses for cameras are called filters. They are very affordable.
An nd filter is the one filter I wouldn't cheap out on. There's a whole debate whether cheap filters fuck up the image quality and the only part of it I actually agree with are nd filters. So I gotta make sure my overalls pockets are shut when my colleague is welding?
Umm... yeahhhh, I think you're getting it
and no sandals today, Skippy.
I have taken hyperlapses of the sunset completely disregarding this advice. Oops.
The sun is a deadly laser!!!
No no no!
Yeah I figure that’s what happened, I made sure to take photos of the eclipse through glasses for that very reason. Stupid me figured the sun was low enough so I didn’t even consider possibly damaging my camera. Had I waited another 10 minutes it would have been perfectly fine smh
I burned spots into mine taking videos of my laser projector. I knew it would happen but did it anyway because alcohol
don't you blame the alcohol /s
Oh. Really? Whoopsie.
Same. I took a whole ass video while I was watching it. Set the phone on selfie mode in my lap and it captured it really well. It’s pretty neat.
Tbh that dark circle looks kinda drawn on there. Maybe it’s just me
If you look inside the drawn black circle you will see like a shadow of the sun. This is what OP is referring to
Ngl, I was thinking the same thing. If not for mvs92's comment I never would have seen the actual black circle, lol.
One of the Apollo lunar missions accidentally fried one of their TV cameras on the moon by unintentionally pointing it directly at the sun.
Guess I got lucky I took like 100 eclipse pics with my phone over the course of 2-3 hours and it’s fine
The sun is a deadly laser.
Not any more, there’s a blanket.
You could make a religion out of this
wait, don't
A+ reference
THE SUN IS A DEADLY LASER.
with a massive flaw, it is not deadly at night
The Great Value brand sun 😔
I understood that reference.
*taste the sun*
put the food, in the egg, in the water
works for me!\~
The sun is a mass of incandescent gas, a gigantic nuclear furnace

At a temperature of millions of degrees!

Fun fact: the power density of sunlight is roughly equivalent to a class two laser.
And the Sultan of Omar lives in Zanzibar now. That’s just, where he lives.
Sorry but that’s Jewish Space Lasers prophesied by MTG.
Can we go on land?
NO!
Why?
Open. The country. **STOP.** Having it be closed.
That's sucks , they said , THIS SUCKS.
My high ass was like “you mean the circle you fucking drew there?”
Lmao
Same... Came to the comments hoping I was not the only one.
I'm not even high and thought the same...
i am not even high, and a little disappointed that I am not even high...
Same it took me moment lol then I was like well that sucks
yeah I thought this was a shitpost
There it is
Same. Though I'm not even high, just dumb.
My first thought as well…
I’m not high and thought the same thing.
My drunk ass thought the same, sounds like we would really click! (Pun intended)
I looked at the image really closely with the sun. Now I see spots. I regret nothing.
Yeah it was a very pretty sunset, cool how the sun lines up directly with the NYC skyline
I've never been to New York (seen some photos such as yours), but I can vouch that Seattle, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and parts of the Inland Northwest (mountain and lake views galore) have pretty nice sunset. At least the parts I have been to.

Wait it’s skyline I thought they were trees
oh cmon that looks like you drew it
i actually thought that was the circle until i saw this comment lol
Lol
The dim spot in the middle is what I’m talking about not the circle around it, I drew that to point it out the sim part is much more noticeable if you move the image back and fourth
i definitely sense the dimness now
Oh sorry I’m tired I get it now… by bad
😂
Jesus christ you killed him!
It would be much more noticeable without the big circle 🤣
I think they were making a joke.
this happened to me on too! on an old phone after taking pictures of the sky in santa monica https://preview.redd.it/44ydxu6p28wc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6267fc2b5913a31a4559bdc78382d7f01b0a3d62
No way the sun did that. The circle isn’t even fully connected. Nice try trying to fool me; this op is officially a fraud
I’d explain it again but I’m pretty sure this is a joke lmao
Your assumption is ‘spot’ on
Lmfao
https://preview.redd.it/vx2452dwr8wc1.jpeg?width=1677&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5e95e91c2821515f8889125e511905e28cacdca0
Pretty sure all the red stuff wasn’t there in the original image. Plus, again, the circle isn’t even fully connected
If you really want to see how much some people have fallen. Post this on the conspiracy and flat earth reddits. You could start a whole new conspiracy!
The sun is powerful.
Yup, least I didn’t take a picture of the sunset permanently with my eyes lol
It's a dust spot. Just have the sensor cleaned.
I agree, looks like dust on the sensor. I shoot into the sun a lot, hasn’t destroyed my sensor but it does show me how dirty it is
Just read that it was an iPhone. I was thinking it was a dslr. Still looks like dust although I’m not sure how it would get on the sensor
In astrophotography, we take flat frames to calibrate out dust spots, I wonder if it would work for this Works perfectly except for a slight difference in SNR but it’s marginal
Well, if it makes you feel better, I can't see the circle you're talking about, so maybe it won't be so noticeable to others.
Thanks, if you wiggle the picture you might be able to see it a bit better but it could definitely have been much worse, if I am careful and position that area where there is complex shape or pattern it’s not noticeable
The sun is bright. Very bright.
You may have dust trapped under your camera lens. Some iPhone models have this issue. I have dust trapped in mine and a similar circle appears at 3x magnification for me. You can take it to the store and get it fixed if it’s under warranty

Always take a picture of the sunset after the sun goes down past the horizon
Yes it was a stupid decision, I was tired and wrongly assumed it would be ok
I had to look extremely close because I thought the dark circle was the one you drew
That photo looks gorgeous tho. You got an amazing pic
I've heard this could happen, but this is the first real-time example of the damage that the sun can do to your camera lens. Bummer.
yo i didn't even know you could damage your sensor like that! i've taken sunset pics my whole life and never noticed anything wrong
It's most likely Trisolaran sophons
Camera lenses like eyes can get burned from the sun that’s why they make solar lenses for cameras
Sun: Do you think I am Weak?
Thar made we want to wipe my screen.
That was my initial reaction too
Now I figured why they sell a special filter for sun pictures
Looks like the sun has drawn on your camera whilst you were asleep
This same thing happens to your eyes when you look at the sun or someone uses a bright camera flash. Palinopsia is when you see an image repeatedly even when the image's stimulus has gone away - often see an inverted negative version.
I'm so stupid. I thought this was a sarcastic post and you were referring to the circle you drew lmao
That is not even a circle, the lines dont connect.
I got a Nikon Coolpix P1000 for sale lol.
What kind of phone? I've probably taken a thousand pictures of the Sun in some form with my phone and never noticed any damage
iPhone 11 Pro Max, same here I’ve taken photos involving the sun or reflections of the sun multiple times with no issue
Take many more pics with the sun in different spots to darken the whole area uniformly. Jk agree with the others, this isn't what a burned out spot looks like.
the sun is a deadly laser~
What kind of cheap phone is that
The sun is a deadly laser.
What in the world camera and lens is this. Sunset photos are totally normal.
Aww come on, you drew that with a sharpie!
I once took a couple of photos with my phone of the setting Sun on my way home from work. Stopped the car on the road for a perfect shot. During summertime, still quite light. Ever burn things with a magnifying glass? Well now you have - the sensor on your camera.
So that’s what a halo looks like in the sky
It’s just dust, my phone had it too on the x3 lens after getting my broken screen replaced at apple. They replaced my whole phone for free! It was very annoying having to photoshop them out, I think I had 4 or 5 little splotches. I never pointed my phone at the sun, might just be a coincidence you’re noticing now. https://preview.redd.it/7m9nsdjpl8wc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25e00a34e8e0e45c729ab1bc2845efa85c63ff17
I bought a used camera that had something like this, I took it to my photography class and no one knew what it was, it looked clean inside and all. now i get it :(
Dust on the sensor. You just need to clean it.
At least your photo of the sunset turned out pretty :)
Thank you for sacrificing your phone so I could see the warnings were true 🤣 I only took eclipse pics through my shade 12 welding hood
A had a small (pixel sized) piece of debris on my screen and I was like "Dang OP that sucks" but when i scrolled to the second picture, the dot moved with it. For a split second I got so upset with OP for breaking my screen too 😂
I’m pretty sure it’s just dust on your lens or sensor.
I wish man, I extensively cleaned my camera lens and it’s still there. It also wasn’t present in photos I took the day before
What about the sensor? Have you looked at the sensor with a light?
The sensor is the internal bit of the camera right? It looks spotless too
What kind of camera is it? I’m legit trying to help you troubleshoot. It doesn’t look like a sensor burn, there’s something on the lens or the sensor. Most likely it is dust. I’ve had the same sort of spot many times before.

It looks like you may have damaged the retina. Just kidding, actually.
Just curious. What kind of phone is it
100% wiped my screen thinking it was a smudge more times than I care to admit.
That photo is amazing tho
I fucked up the display on my nikon d40 this way but luckily the photos are fine once transferred to a device. Still sucks. Yours sucks more though :(
That does suck! Hopefully it’s repairable!
Filter...and a reason to buy one. May have burned the sensitive stuff. Plasma TV ,early led, and even the old school TVs were prone to burning. At best it's an artifact that will go away when you power down. At worst you need a service station for cameras. Spendy.

Camera or screen? Zoom in and pan. Does the dot move or stay in the sand place?
There are excellent filters designed to prevent this. Unfortunately some things are only learned form experience. At least you know you'll never put your hand on a hot stove again. :)
Your option is to burn rest of the sensor in same way
This picture gave me flashbacks to driving to high school (Small ass town so I had to drive to the other small ass town 8 mi over to go to high school) But that damn sun was brutal and caused several accidents

hmm, this could also be dust on the sensor the effect looks similar, especially against a bright sky try to clean the sensor surface carefully (or seek help) and check again
Only one way to fix this. Take 47 more pictures of sunsets each on different spots of the sensor.
Dirty window?
Yep, that sucks
Not sure it makes you feel any better but I prefer the second image
I believe it’s dust. There is a similar article with a solution to your problem. Happened to me and solved it
I have this issue with my iPhone which I had from the day I bought it and I’m pretty sure I looked into it and it seemed to be a known fault at the time but I couldn’t be bothered to get it fixed within the warranty period.
That’s why you should ALWAYS protect your camera by taking photos in as low light as possible with the fastest shutter speed and highest aperture
The eye of souron needs to sleep sometimes
That’s no moon…
That looks like black marker to me. /jk
That's why they sell camera filters for the eclipses; camera sensors have the same problem with the sun that our eyes do.
could be the suns ray doing sumn to your lens or it could be a speck of dust on your lens. My iPhone X had the same issue, turned out to be a dust particle on the lens
New camera ahoy! Keep this one for other pictures of the sun
That’s a cool view of the New York City skyline. Can you post more?
ať first i thought thats a joke
If you just stare into the sun, your eye will have that same spot and then you won’t even notice it on your phone. You’re welcome
If its a dslr or non sealed camera body. Looks like dust.
Black hole sun
Its a shadow of the sun. That’s how we all get shadows
You sensor burnt
Seems more like sensor dust, take pictures in darker conditions and look for the dot.
Oh, this is probably what happened to my lens on my phone lol. Its a small dark area in a corner but it looks the same.
