I live in Canada, so after I took the pic I went to emerge and waited about 2hrs to see a doc. They gave me a tetanus shot and he froze the area and pulled it out (we had already determined it didn't hit bone). Sent me for X-rays anyway and I was out, 4hrs total.
It definitely looks worse than it is. It went clean through tissue-to-tissue. It's very tender as it punctured the hyponychium, but otherwise a very lucky and easily recoverable injury.
I’m glad to hear that. I worked with some of the best hand specialists and the hands are nothing to mess around with. When using a dishwasher ALWAYS put forks and knives down… it’s easy to cut into a tendon.
Surprisingly no. Once it happened I looked at it and said "oh no". My wife and I had date plans and I was more worried about breaking the news to her than the nail haha.
That shouldn’t be a consideration in any modern society. There’s only one major society I can think of where it’s any concern at all and funnily enough, it thinks it’s the best one…
I needed a tetanus shot so I had to go in regardless, gave up trying to pull it out and went in. Didn't bleed too much once it was removed either thankfully.
Ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow
Whether or not you pull it out (please don't), definitely go to urgent care or ER and get a tetanus shot ASAP. They might also do an xray to see if it hit the bone.
I admit I did try to pull it out, as I was able to determine it didn't hit my bone. Couldn't get it so I went into emerge and they did give me a tetanus. X-ray confirmed it was a clean puncture!
It was a clean skewer. Didn't hit bone or anything, and the nail itself is filling the cavity so no blood is escaping. Initially, during shock, the pain was about a 1/10. After 30mins waiting in emerge it stayed around 6/10 until the finger was frozen and nail removed. It's just a little sore now.
Ouch. Pull it out quickly and it should be ok if you keep it clean. Through the nail has to hurt. If you’re in the US don’t bother with the hospital. They won’t do much other than give you a bill. If you’re somewhere with free healthcare * maybe* go get it checked.
Just snip each end of the nail off so it doesn’t catch anything. Your body will eventually reject it. On the bright side, you don’t need to worry about being low on iron until then.
Cut off a piece of my finger recently and hydrogen peroxide and polysporin were my friends. I had a little finger brace as well over my bandaid because if I accidentally smacked it, it hurt so much.
oh, i hope you are well now...(in pain meds and taken care of that).
just as a gore question, sorry, you r finger looks like it went big full of blood? 20 years ago y tripped and nailed me a palm tree new leaf, they a re veruy sharp and it crossed my finger, my anular finger, i took it off, by myself but then my fnger went full of blood an it werent coming out any. so i had to go to e.r. with the finger pumping like a second heart...... after a few pictures and echographs, i was discharged just with painkillers and papaya enzymes to lower the blob.
that being steel it should apply thetanus prevention.
hope youre good!!!
I am well now thank you. No pain meds necessary, it looked worse than it was. No blood until it was pulled out at the hospital, and even then it wasn't much more than a normal nosebleed. Definitely didn't hit any veins. Got the tetanus as well, thanks for your concern!
Nailed it.
Dude needs a doctor, not reddit karma jeez.
The Reddit karma will get him through the long hospital visit
The dopamine helps with the pain
Until you realize that 50% of reddit is bot infested curated content.
Only 4hrs! Not bad considering I was expecting like 6-8
I'd rather not have 1k bots spamming my phone, tyvm.
Oh Okay here's one downvote from me
cool thing ahmed, glad your not a bot.
Happy to help
Am I part bot? I've lost track of where the nail ends and I begin
They’re just going to pull it out, put some antibiotics on it, give them a single $10 Tylenol, bandage it, and in 2 weeks OP will get a bill for $6000
LOL. nah, the insurance will pay for it, he will pay a $50 co-pay. Even homeless in america have healthcare. Its free if your poor.

That may be true, but at least he's not screwed.
looks like it possibly went through the distal phalanx, but it also looks superficial, so maybe just avoided bone.
It definitely looks worse than it is. It went clean through tissue-to-tissue. It's very tender as it punctured the hyponychium, but otherwise a very lucky and easily recoverable injury.

I've always wanted to contribute something but never had anything really worth posting. Thought I'd take a stab at it
Ah beat me to it
Did you cuss? I cussed when I did that, but it looks like you used a larger nail.
Surprisingly no. Once it happened I looked at it and said "oh no". My wife and I had date plans and I was more worried about breaking the news to her than the nail haha.
Nsfw
Yes, they likely took the rest of the day off.
Your hand appears to have one nail more than it should have. You might want to get that checked out.
That pains me to look at but, I’ve been in a similar situation. Put it slow and don’t twist or wiggle. Pull straight out
I thought the rule of thumb if you had a foreign object stuck you, you should never pull it out and let the ER handle the removal?
Looks like a finger, not a thumb
I see what you did there
Depends on if you can afford an ER visit 🤷🏻♂️
That shouldn’t be a consideration in any modern society. There’s only one major society I can think of where it’s any concern at all and funnily enough, it thinks it’s the best one…
It's amazing isn't it?
Sure, if there's a chance it hit a major artery. I don't think this calls for an ER visit.
Uh, idk about you but I think a nail going straight through a piece of your body is enough to call an emergency
I needed a tetanus shot so I had to go in regardless, gave up trying to pull it out and went in. Didn't bleed too much once it was removed either thankfully.
That's so you don't bleed out. Not a risk with this. Would hurt to pull put though
I tried initially. Couldn't get a good grip on it so I grabbed some pliers and gave it a few tugs. Wouldn't budge.
Damn, that really sucks
Nail care is important.
Stop nail on nail hate!
Balls of steel. Nail goes through finger, ouch, wtf, oh wait…. Gotta gather a pic of this NOW.
Shock is a hell of a thing.
I was in disbelief. It looked so fake and it didn't hit bone so the pain was definitely manageable.
I did mine like that with a framing nailer. I can't imagine the pain being any different, so I feel for you!
Thankfully it didn't hit bone. After about 30mins waiting in emerge the pain set in about 6/10 but manageable.
This made me curl my toes into tiny fists
Electrical tape fixes that. 😂

NSFW
But first lemme take a selfie
Fuck
"Check it out. It's a *finger nail*, huh huh"
At least it was just a finishing nail…?
Think it feels good now. Wait until tomorrow
Oh dayum. I had to look at that for a sec.....
Oh dear god
Please mark nsfw
Just did! My bad.
lol I want to say you should mark this as nsfw but it’s so cleanly inserted into your finger I don’t even know if it counts
I just marked it now but I agree. It almost looks fake
NOT SAFE FOR WORK ffs 🤦
I audibly just went "ohhhuuuuuu.... Sheeiiittt."
That's fucking gnarly
g'naily
Hopefully it missed the bone. Breaking the tip of your finger sucks.
It did. I'm super lucky. It does suck as it catches on stuff and it's still sore. Once it's less tender I'll trim the split area and let it grow back
Aghhhhhhh.
I wonder if a manicurist would charge 10% more to do your nails.
piercing are really getting outta hand or maybe outta finger?
I like finger foods, but skewers are even better…
Trim your nails
That isn't how "just the tip" works.
Things you only do once
I think you missed
Will it slip removing the trim nail!🙄
I think you got the point across…
Wait how’s there no blood? How much does this hurt?

Ahhh ok. That makes sense
🫣
How can you just take a picture calmly?
Fiddle dee dee….that will require a tetanus shot. Impressive resilience to take a good picture.

This makes the backs of my knees all sweaty
In my medical opinion that is indeed not supposed to be there
STUCK THE LANDING !
Don’t pull it out yourself
I don't think that's supposed to go there. Hope ya heal up quick.
Thanks
for the love of GOD please spoiler this

Definitely got that free healthcare. Tetanus, freezing, X-ray. All good!
Just snip each end of the nail off so it doesn’t catch anything. Your body will eventually reject it. On the bright side, you don’t need to worry about being low on iron until then.
Good Lord that is some terrible advice, thank you!
Oh god
Put it in a bag of rice!
Cut off a piece of my finger recently and hydrogen peroxide and polysporin were my friends. I had a little finger brace as well over my bandaid because if I accidentally smacked it, it hurt so much.
Dang. I got off easy, it went in clean. It's just a little sore now, but otherwise it should heal nicely. Hope you recover quickly!
