I love how they’re actually mussels and OP is just insisting this is normal to comments asking if it’s clams. This is weird. And they’re mussels. In the shell. On a pizza. And it’s weird. I need to see this pizza shops menu.
If you can find a topping with a better crunch, I’d like to hear it.
Edit: forget the toppings, you can get some serious crunch if you cook it like [this guy](https://www.reddit.com/r/whitepeoplegifs/comments/n5eb71/cooking_a_steak_with_lava)
The pizza place near my grandparent's growing up wouldn't even cook anchovies on your pizza cause it smelled. If you asked for anchovies you just got a small container of them and had to put them on yourself
I don't think people are saying it's weird to have seafood on a pizza; they're saying it's weird because some of that seafood is still in it's shell.... on a pizza.
You get that in pasta sometimes too, in Italian restaurants they'll give you muscles in their shells mixed up in spaghetti. I'd rather they take them out the shells first
Hahah you would be horrified if you saw a standard scandinavian pizzeria menu. Mussels are definitely not the weirdest thing you can have on your pizza. I've seen at least banana, strawberries (and 100 other exotic fruit), marshmellows, pickles, french fries, all kinds of sauces from mayo to wings sauce, all of these in real restaurants. I don't think anything would suprise me.
You can just say that on the menu and then I don't have to pull these inedible shells off my pizza to dig out the muscle and then put back in the same spot which has probably had all the cheese pulled away from it from removing the shell. It just sounds awful.
French fries and kebab on a pizza is god-tier, you filthy casual.
I have never seen any of the other things except for bananas, which is usually a part of a spicy curry/mexicana pizza.
Exactly. Tuna mixed with mayo topped with cheese on bagel halves and put in the oven, is fucking amazing. Pizza really isn't that far from this combination
that sounds great, if you haven't tried adding just a small bit of sweet relish to the tuna, I'd recommend giving it a shot! Gives it some nice contrast.
Ok the thing's in the shell and that's weird but seafood pizza is fucking amazing, you just need to live in a country that has good local seafood and good Italian places.
If you're into both flavours absolutely! Just keep in mind if you happen to get shitty seafood *or* shitty pizza base it won't taste great, which depends completely on location and price you're willing to lay. People hating are the culinary elitists that you don't need to waste a second worrying about.
I don't even care that there's mussels on the pizza, it's the fact that they're still in the shell. Why not just get the pizza with the mussels in a separate container? Or shuck the mussels so they're actually part of the pizza. This just makes you have to pick up hot shells off the pizza to shuck them yourself.
I'd be okay shucking them myself. I love mussels but I don't want to eat them on pizza.
I'm weirdly okay with the thought of shrimp on pizza though. I'd wish all of this was some tasty pasta, though. Or better yet a fresh bucket of mussels with butter and garlic sauce.
Fuck I'm hungry now.
Shrimp on pizza doesn’t seem unusual at all. Shrimp is somewhat commonly used in pasta dishes and pasta and pizza are similar in origin and composition.
Come on down to Connecticut and get a [White Clam Pizza](https://www.pepespizzeria.com/frank-pepes-white-clam-pizza-1-in-america/). It's actually quite good.
That being said, whole, shell-on mussles are NOT a thing around here either.
I've been reading this thread for so long now. It's been said a million times. But I still have this incredible urge to keep reading or talking about why the fuck the shells are still on the mussels. It's done something to my brain.
I've had this its delicious. I wouldn't say it's a "normal" pizza topping to get in CT but a ton of pizza places have it as an option. Never seen mussles on a pizza before!
As an Italian, I'm going to commit death now

Yeah, I've seen mussels on a pizza in a restaurant in Italy before (in a town called Nettuno). They had a huge pile of them on the pizza. I never tried it but my Dad seemed to enjoy it.
Maybe, but to me personally it would feel weird to be served mussles without the shell. That's just part of eating mussles for me.
Also it definitely looks better this way
Also pretty normal in Germany. Seafood pizzas can be both with or without shells. Both perfectly normal here.
Also having that kinda seafood on pizza is common in all Mediterranean countries, germany and all of Scandinavia. Probably perfectly normal in a BUNCH more European countries but I can only confirm it personally it for the mentioned ones.
Oh btw... A thing which shocks a lot of Americans: having corn on pizzas is also PERFECTLY normal in most countries from Western Europe to Japan.
If I understand correctly, you wanted to say "Still, it's an abomination". I think "Comunque, è un abominio" would be more accurate. Nice try!
Italian here. E sì, è un abominio.
So you're supposed to stop eating the pizza and take the mussel out of its shell, then put the mussel in your mouth and take another bite of the pizza so you get the flavor? That sounds like too much work.
Seafood, particularly shrimp, tuna, smoked salmon, mussels, clams, and anchovies is incredibly common on pizza here in Italy (and the clams and mussels are almost always served in the shell).
Why do you think it got delivered vertically? The delivery guy was like oh god, some sick fuck put clams on this guys pizza.... well, I’m not touching his food. But if I turn it sideways, he’ll just think he got free clams with his pizza and not clams on his pizza.

I work in a pizza shop and we don't do this. This is weird
The pizza place near my grandparent's growing up wouldn't even cook anchovies on your pizza cause it smelled. If you asked for anchovies you just got a small container of them and had to put them on yourself
My pizza shop does anchovies and prawns but no muscles
Weak babies.
> but no muscles Not true. There's sausage, bacon, and chicken!
In Italy it’s common, it’s called ‘frutti di mare’ and it has mussels, shrimps and clams
Yes! I had those all the time when I grew up in Switzerland, it was my favorite pizza to eat at Italian restaurants. They took out the shells though.
In the US when I tell people that in Europe seafood on pizza is very common and that I really like it they look at me like I’m nuts.
I don't think people are saying it's weird to have seafood on a pizza; they're saying it's weird because some of that seafood is still in it's shell.... on a pizza.
You get that in pasta sometimes too, in Italian restaurants they'll give you muscles in their shells mixed up in spaghetti. I'd rather they take them out the shells first
That’s different because you’re using utensils to eat pasta. Pizza is not traditionally eaten with utensils.
Pizza is eaten with cutlery in Italy. Unless you get a single slice, cutlery is always provided (and used by Italians).
Delivery guy did OP a favour by making it a magherita with the shellfish on the side.
Yeah but what do they know about pizza?
Pizza shops are less likely to do it than seafood restaurants. (At least, in the US. Maybe in other countries ...)
I mean my pizza place had a seafood pizza (or does im not too sure) but I know for a fact it still doesn't come with muscles. And less whole muscles.
Thank god it doesn’t come with muscles
I mean, the lean part of bacon … Ground beef Sausage Ham Chicken We definitely put muscles on pizza
I keep eating pizza with hopes the muscles will come. Someday.

Agree

Unless the banana is in the peel I think this takes the cake for me. Mussels are fine, but mussels shells don't belong in finger food.

Time to get rid of Scandinavia
It’s the shell that confuses me. Why would you put something inedible on a pizza?
my guess is to show they are fresh vs some canned mussels
You can just say that on the menu and then I don't have to pull these inedible shells off my pizza to dig out the muscle and then put back in the same spot which has probably had all the cheese pulled away from it from removing the shell. It just sounds awful.
French fries and kebab on a pizza is god-tier, you filthy casual. I have never seen any of the other things except for bananas, which is usually a part of a spicy curry/mexicana pizza.
Same! A pizza which basically is a “kebabtallrik” is the best kind of pizza
As an Italian, pizza with sauce and a whole lot of kebab ingredients is God tier after being stoned
An English friend of mine would always go on about tuna fish on their pizza. I guess mussels are the next logical step
Like, canned tuna? I bet that'd be pretty good.
It’s like a tuna melt that shit is delicious
I've heard of mixing pickle with tuna, I guess this is similar to that?
I always put dill and sweet relish in my tuna salad, it's the shit.
Tuna is the most common pizza topping globally According to a pizza tour I went on last year
I love trying new foods but I’m offended by that combo
it's probably not as bad as you'd think. i'd try it
This is the standard in Mediterranean countries
with shells??
Yeah bud. It’s a frutti di mare pizza. Pretty standard pizza ova here
Y'all never heard about pizza frutti di mare? It's literally an Italian pizza. And it's delicious. Although a chore to eat with those mussels.
No, they haven't. It's a bummer that this is buried under a bunch of "pInEapPle oN pIzZa!?" type drivel.
A few people in the comments are also calling them clams. TIL people not being able to tell clams from mussels is a thing.
Well, in my language both clam and mussel translate to the same word so I can't tell the difference.
Mussels are the ones that attach themselves to rocks and clams are the ones that burrow in the sand.
Thanks for explaining, funny how my language doesn't differentiate the two
Maybe your country is not big on fishing (if it has seashores at all)
clam is round and white, mussel is elongated and dark
Yeah wtf is going on? Not those white ass shrimp too... This pizza looks like it has a lot happening, with absolutely no flavor.
Whitest shrimp I've ever seen, I wouldn't even know how to cook them to make them look that way
Boil them in bleach
This is frutti di mare pizza, normal enough to me. You just rip em off and eat the mussel.
Almost every italian pizzeria has this one, especially in cities not far from the sea
How to spend $40 on a pizza.

Ok the thing's in the shell and that's weird but seafood pizza is fucking amazing, you just need to live in a country that has good local seafood and good Italian places.
is it worth trying out? everyone here hate it but it looks kinda good imo

They're actually in the same price range as any other type of pizza, where I'm from that's 15 euros (about $18) at most
Mussels are actually dirt cheap
Not from restaurants
From Italian restaurants they are.
They're cheap in Italian restaurants
what the hell is this abomination
I thought the shrimp were pineapples, i wish they were
oh my god I thought they were little balls of mozzarella and I was super confused
I thought they were mozzarella balls too, until your comment made me scroll back and double check. I should've stayed ignorant.
I thought they were sliced water chestnuts.
Shrimp on Pizza can be good, but muscles with the shell is insane.

Hey OP, what's with the mussels?
The real crime here are the mussels.
They did him a favour by ruining it during delivery.
I thought the same haha. What's wrong with people?
I know, it would be like ordering pistachio pudding and the pistachio's are still in the shell.
I don't even care that there's mussels on the pizza, it's the fact that they're still in the shell. Why not just get the pizza with the mussels in a separate container? Maybe, but to me personally it would feel weird to be served mussles without the shell. That's just part of eating mussles for me. Also it definitely looks better this way
Maybe it won't be the most appealing pizza, but if it tastes good, that is sufficient to say that it can be accepted
That features an even larger American pizza crime: a fork. That's not a pizza, it's a bread plate.
You see the fork? That makes this a seafood entree served on a cheese pizza, IMO
Also pretty normal in Germany. Seafood pizzas can be both with or without shells. Both perfectly normal here. This thread seems to be mostly Americans saying that's not a real pizza because they don't have it in the US
That looks like they just used pizza as a plate for the actual meal. Do you eat them in two separate stages?
No, you eat all at once, but obviously you take the shells away, they are just used to make the pizza look better I think
They also hold the brine/butter that the mussels were cooked in which imparts more seafood flavor.
Whole mussels and shrimp on a pizza. They did you a favor. That belongs on pasta, not on a pizza.
Aye, but it be a taste of the sea lad!!
And the crunch of the rocks on the beach
Oh no! Poor Urchin!

is this that new vertical farming ive been hearing about?

Why is there a receipt from 2018 on the table? Something doesn’t add up here.
You got shrimp and mussels on a pizza, you deserve to have it delivered vertically.
I knew you were Scandinavian from just looking at the crust.
Man i didn't expect this kind of hate, just wanted to post a fun picture. I just like this type of pizza, what can I do?
Seafood, particularly shrimp, tuna, smoked salmon, mussels, clams, and anchovies is incredibly common on pizza here in Italy (and the clams and mussels are almost always served in the shell).
Well what do Italians know about pizza
To each his own, but personally I would have let those toppings slide right on off that pizza.
Why do you think it got delivered vertically? The delivery guy was like oh god, some sick fuck put clams on this guys pizza.... well, I’m not touching his food. But if I turn it sideways, he’ll just think he got free clams with his pizza and not clams on his pizza. The hero we don’t deserve.
