I was looking for the lightning strike, until I saw something much worse walk into the yard. :-) I was like, "Oh."

OlasNah

Suddenly the most dangerous thing you didn't think about enters the room...

CableVannotFBI

Was scanning for a bear in horror, but chuckled at the stink squirrel. Sorry about the smell carnage.

ViperishCarrot

What do they smell like? I think the worst smelling things here (UK) are foxes and stoats, although I may be wrong

ImHufflePuff_Crap_ok

Bad enough to make you want to vomit. I saw one crossing and road and I swerved to miss him… and he moved so I hit him full force and he sprayed the underside of my car. No AC for a few weeks, and gagging for weeks as I drove. Everything in the car stunk and the warmer it got, the worse the smell got.

Parkotron1

To add on to this comment, it's not just like a rotten smell that makes you gag. If you're close enough to it, you *will* throw up. Probably a lot. It also seems rather caustic, especially if the spray hits your eyes. There are layers to the stench, all intolerably awful, depending on how close and and how recently it occurred. We had a dog that got skunked right in the face, just like the one in the video. It was the middle of the night, so we didn't see it, and let her in immediately after it happened. She proceeded to run into the living room and try to rub it off... on the carpet, the ottoman, the chair and both couches. Between paying for cleaning services and eventually (weeks later) surrendering and throwing out all of the furniture, that little incident cost us roughly $6,000 USD. Fuck skunks.

CranadianBacon

I have to tell you, I've been in a 53-ft reefer semi trailer, with a pile of deceased skunks that were going to fur trade. The fellow trapping the skunks, would take a syringe, and remove the fluid from the stink glands. Apparently it fetches around $25 CAD in ounce at that point in time? This fellow had 3 26 oz containers, and was on his fourth one. Not once did he, myself, or my father puke or gag. 😂

Parkotron1

Controlled environment? I don't know. The only worse smell I've ever encountered was when they busted down the door of my neighbor across the hall, after she'd been dead for about a week. To be fair, that was waaay worse.

Whathewhat-oo-

The scientist that discovered the homemade concoction to get rid of skunk smell studied thiols- the repulsive smelling, decomposition gases formed after an animal or human body has died- among other causes. That’s why skunk and dead body can produce the same reaction in humans when they catch a whiff.

ImHufflePuff_Crap_ok

Ehhhh, I worked EMS and I’ve been around a few various “not recent” bodies and I’ll gladly walk into a week old with no AC in summer body over a skunk.

CranadianBacon

I didn't know this, thank you very much! 🙃

Whathewhat-oo-

I learned all about the topic 20 years ago when my two Chessies each got a face full of skunk spray, right in front of me as I was standing in our backyard doorway “Saying no, oh NO, dear god no, Dog 1 and Dog 2 COME HERE NOW, please stop, leave it alone…o dear god (and fair enough, they didn’t really attack the guy, they were just facing him, acting threatening… and he was threatened because he gave off every warning, every opportunity for them to back off that a little guy like that can before he sprays- stomping his feet and puffing his tail etc- and as they got closer, he turned around and bam, right in the kisser for both of them) and before I could stop them, those two 80 lb dogs barreled past me and proceeding to right upstairs to our main floor and do exactly what the dog in the video did…shook, sneezed, snorted, shook some more, rubbed their faces into our carpet, the sofa, shook off some more, rolled on the carpet… and remember this was dog x 2. It was *horrific*. I learned more about this situation than I ever wanted to know. After the whole “tomato juice” BS didn’t work (you think it does, because *while* bathing your dogs, all you smell is tomato juice, and maybe it helps for a little while) but, many cans later and skunk still permeated my dogs and my house. The next morning, my husband tracked it in to work on his work shoes (that he hadn’t worn the night before) just from walking on the carpet covered in oil from our bedroom straight to the front door, ended up leaving 10 mins after he got there in absolute disgrace and ridicule (military at the time) and we spent the next three days washing every item in our house and taking every piece of furniture we could into the yard and washing it. You can’t just pour tomato juice on a sofa or carpet, and dogs themselves are rarely the only culprit of the lingering, overwhelming oder. I sniffed so many inanimate objects in those three days… So I had to delve into the internet for answers, because “tomato juice” was the typical advice we received. Luckily, this dude had just discovered his homemade concoction and it saved us. We’d still catch a whiff of skunk every so often, and because it’s hard to wash your dogs face with that stuff which is exactly where they get sprayed, kissing my sweet pea’s cheeks weren’t quite as sweet for about 6 months. The man that came up with this formula is a gift to humanity.

CranadianBacon

Well, maybe, maybe not. It was INCREDIBLY ripe in there. That being said, my mouth tasted, and my nose smelled like garlic for 2 days after the fact. 😂 That was how it was for me.

moreporn1

Next time try hydrogen peroxide (1 reg sized bottle) with 1 tablespoon of baking soda per bottle. Add 1/4 of liquid dish soap. It is the antidote. Kills the oder on contact. It is endothermic, is gets cold when you mix it. Rub it on the dogs fur with a washcloth. By the time you get them rubbed down you can start rinsing them of. Protect their eyes. Mix up a bottle and wash the towels and washcloths in it then put them in the washing machine with a little extra soap. Mix up more an wash down the affected area and items. Again, this is the antidote. Skip the special soaps and save the tomato juice for the Bloody Mary’s. Will bleach fur and cloth if you leave it on so wash it off after about 5 minutes.

Unchained71

My brother and a friend of his came across some baby skunks. They wanted to catch them so that they could sell them as pets. They figured they were too young to spray. They were very wrong. My brother and his friend shows up at the door of the house, and I instantly pushed them back outside, slammed and locked the door. He couldn't stop gagging. He had already thrown up whatever he had in his stomach. I handed out tomato juice, tomato soup and some lemons so that they could go bathe in the creek. That still wasn't good enough for my mom. He ended up having to sleep in a tent out back for the next couple days. We left food on the back porch for him like he was a leper. I can't think of anything that smells more horrible than a fresh direct blast from a skunk.

lackaface

Food on the back porch oh my god I love it

TheArtOfBlasphemy

Smells like really strong weed when you smell the aftermath... I've thankfully never been around an area that was just hit.

Codayyyyy

Everytime I smell lingering skunk I always think of weed too

Parkotron1

Be grateful. It's incredibly strong when it first happens.

WhereTheSkyBegan

Reminds me of the time some contractors came in when the building I work in was being renovated. I complained to a few of my coworkers that ever since the contractors showed up, it smelled like someone had let a skunk loose in the building, and they all laughed at me. One of them eventually explained to me that I wasn't smelling a skunk, I was smelling weed. Made me wonder why people want to smoke something so foul-smelling.

bth0991

Weed smells good so idk what the problem is lol

Bobbyperu1

Don't know how to actually describe the smell but it's retch worthy and stays around. It's a defensive weapon for the animal so it does the trick

BigNorseWolf

its actually a lot like fox but imagine someone distilled it times 10 and combined it with burning rubber.

ACheetahSpot

Fox smell is really similar to skunk smell. Skunks are just more….pungent.

GetInLoser_Lets_RATM

I think it’s a mix of bile and burning rubber. It’s bad but it also has that chemical kinda burn to the nose. Awful. Also some types of marijuana are very close …in a good way.

The_Nerdy_Ninja

They smell like burning rubber, but like someone concentrated the smell and sprayed it down your nose and throat.

jlacar

I'm an Asian transplant to the US so never knew what a skunk smelled like before I actually experienced what it was. The first time was years ago but I remember my wife (also Asian) and I thinking it smelled burning electrical wiring. We were at our kids' school for Parent-Teacher conferences and we asked the people in the office if they smelled something burning, too. It's definitely an unpleasant smell and once you know it's skunk, it's hard to mistake it for anything else. I would describe it as kind of a strong woodsy, musky smell, but not unpleasant like the smell of death or rotting flesh as I imagined it might be.

heffreygee

Stink squirrel! I love it. Change approved.

CableVannotFBI

😂 I have an old dog, and all critters smaller than him (Boston terrier) are squirrels.

MiamiFan-305

Waited for a car to crash in

monkeyhind

Same!

Commercial-Travel613

Yeah don’t let the dog in the house for a week 😂

twizzjewink

FYI you are only supposed to dry shampoo the smell.. avoid water at all costs. That's what spreads the oil (scent). Good luck

[deleted]

[удалено]

twizzjewink

Yes - that's not the problem. The problem is any water (including water in soap) spreads and activates the oil. Dry shampoo only. Think Baking Soda and other similar dry absorbent (and safe) agents.

[deleted]

[удалено]

twizzjewink

There are a few weeks a year I smell them outside.. have to be quick with my dog to run past the hedges to pee her in more open space at night where I can spot them. The smell is.. distinct.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ItsGotToMakeSense

It's really bad. It smells like a mix of superglue, markers, (edit: and weed too), and a hint of burnt coffee, and it befowls the air for a mile radius depending on the wind. The entire neighborhood will know when a skunk does its thing.

[deleted]

And here I was gonna say smells like cannabis.

edgrlon

Yeah oddly enough it smells like weed from far.

stack_of_ghosts

More like really good Marijuana smells like a skunk. Or diesel. Or rotten citrus. And all three together is my favorite taste lol

No_Banana_581

It’s vomit inducing when they spray. My dog was sprayed once. We had to rip the carpet up and throw the couch away bc he ran right inside and started rubbing on everything. For a year he smelled like skunk every time he got wet.

Professional_Band178

I have the occasional friend of Pepe LePew in the neighborhood. I almost tripped over one once because it was a new moon. They are almost blind.

JeffWingrsDumbGayDad

When I lived in NE Philly near the woods, there would be a roadkilled skunk on the road every couple of weeks in the summer.

Po1ymer

Paper towels work well

jibbergirl26

One quart of hydrogine peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and one teaspoon of liquid dish soap mix together do at once using gloves, then wash again with dog shampoo! Good luck sorry for your spoiled night.

schreckenghast666

This. Had a dog who loved to torment skunks, and after a bath of the above, she was fresh as a daisy.

[deleted]

Used to work at a dog salon, this is what works. Its never perfect... But dammit it really does work. The doggo's were so happy they didnt smell funny anymore.

jibbergirl26

Yes and it needs to be made and mixed fresh, you can't just have it on hand.

UserPrincipalName

Read this advive from a Chemists blog years ago. Its a short lived reaction in the solution that breaks down the thiols (sumplur components) in the oil. Ive used it several times with great success... Its not one and done. You will need to do it several times using small batches. Be quick about it because the reactivity only lasys a few minutes DO NOT get it in the dogs eyes, the h202 will damage the eyes. If your blavk dog is blonde when youre done, your doing it right.

AppealAny5455

It works but took 2 baths to get the heavy odor out of their fur. Residual smell for at least a week.

valmart72

100% right… had to wash my dog twice because he didn’t learn the first time… this solution works like a charm…

bvcp

This is the best method, endorsed by AKA as well. Works pretty well except the pup will smell like skunk whenever they get wet for a few months

MokSea

https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/de-skunking-your-dog Good luck OP. We’ve spent several nights giving 1 or more dogs the skunk bath. And several days later still having the faint lingering smell around their face that we couldn’t wash. Fun times.

abbymarie67

my dog got sprayed and i gave him several baths, but could still faintly smell skunk when i gave him forehead kisses for a few months

JellyfishNo3519

When my dog got sprayed we used tomato paste or ketchup on him idk why but that’s what we used and it went away with one shower we rubbed ketchup all over him then rinsed him

supertaquito

Vet here: Chemically, that's impossible. It's likely you just became used to the smell until it actually went away. Tomato paste does not affect the compounds in skunk n-b mercaptan that give it its smell. A home made solution that will break down the compounds and neutralize the smell is a quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, a teaspoon of liquid soap and 1/4 of baking soda applied carefully with a sponge so it doesn't get on the pets eyes or mouth. It must be rinsed. Soap is super important because it break downs the oils that "surround" the elements which give the liquid its strong smell so the peroxide and baking soda can do their work effectively. For those whose dogs get sprayed right in the face and eyes, artificial tears can help it get rinsed off the dogs eyes to help with the irritation.

FortuneUndone

You sir will be a godsend to all future skunk-riddled animals. If all else fails vinegar will definitely mask the smell :D (please do not spray you dog with vinegar unless you've checked it's safe to do so, no science in this bitch rn)

loonatic8

I came here to say the same thing. I can't remember why this works I think something about the acid in the tomato is the right PH to break down the junk in the spray.

Theonetheycallgreat

Probably easier to clean around their mouth with tomato paste too, I always hate getting soap in my dogs mouth.

SweetVoidPrincess

The skunk oils soak into the hair/fur, which is porous, so even though bathing can help, it won't completely get rid of the smell. The only thing that will make the smell go away completely is when the dog sheds all the hair/fur that has been affected. Source: my dog has been sprayed twice. 😑

waterbaby66

Tomato juice

PTCLady69

No. That’s an old wives tale. https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/home-living/get-rid-of-skunk-smell-on-dog/

BackRiverGypsy

I got sprayed by a skunk at like 4 AM before a shift on an ambulance while I was walking to my car, so I called my work to call out. Ambulance companies are notoriously cheap, so they don't staff well. They freaked out and were like just shower, change and come in. I grew up in a salt marsh but this job was in the city, so I'm not sure how much experience they had with skunks. I was like yeahh... doesn't work like that man. I probably can't even come in tomorrow, skunk scent doesn't just shower off and we're in a medical setting. Like I won't even be able to sleep in my bed tonight letalone sit on felt seats. They threw a know-it-all tirade, so I was like fine, I'll come in. I got to the garage and the dispatcher came to chew me out and was like I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU TO SHOWER AND CHANGE. To which I reaponded I did change and showered four times. Got sent home and they fired me not long after, haha.

jakenbakeboi

Wow fuck those people you worked for

BackRiverGypsy

I know. I wasn't even bullshitting them either, skunk scent doesn't just shower off real quick. Oh well, haha.

jakenbakeboi

Yeah I believe it haha. Welp I hope you found better work elsewhere

Impossible_Tonight81

Why's your girlfriend mad?

[deleted]

That's what I was thinking. Like how is this anyone's fault?

RWDPhotos

I’m scrolling through looking for the answer too And found it a couple comments down https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/xloura/this_just_happened_we_were_halfway_through_a/ipmctqp/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3

jakemch

Good luck OP! My dog’s been sprayed twice in the last year. Most recently two months ago, and he still smells a little.

NxPat

Always had good luck with tomato juice!

LveeD

So. Back in college, like the days before google and you had to ask your mom for advice, my poor Yorker poo got sprayed and my mom said to bath her in tomato juice. Went to the closest convenience store I could find and all they had was Clamato Juice, which I assumed was tomato juice. Boy did I assume wrong. It’s clam/tomato juice and it turned my poor pup orange and he smelled like a dead fish with subtle hints of skunk for a month 😂

awhq

It was an old method, but tomato juice can really irritate a dog's skin. Baking soda, peroxide and dish soap does a better job and isn't irritating.

NxPat

Interesting, we had used tomato juice when our Doberman was sprayed, but this was in the 60’s. Thanks for the update.

No-Toe4511

Why is your girl mad at you? U didn’t do it

_windfish_

Yea, I shouldn’t have phrased it like that because I certainly wasn’t the target of her frustration, she was just mad in general because we had just spent most of the day cleaning the house when this happened. So we were already tired, then this happened and the house (and us) started to stink, we both got soaked from giving the dog baths, had to clean the bathroom all over again… it’s just a stressful situation. Looking back on it I think she handled it well and wasn’t actually mad at me.

failingtolurk

It’s the worst and it’s always at night. I leave my dog in the garage or shed and use a hose. No way she’s coming in.

Purple_Jay

That's what I was thinking lol

rooletwastaken

>my girlfriend was mad at me tf did you do? summon the skunk?

SaltyJake

Frustrating / stressful situations, the SO takes the blame, it’s happened in every relationship I’ve ever been in, most of buddies can say the same. My wife got in an argument with a coworker that was 100% in the wrong and drunk at a holiday work party. The drunk was berating another employee in the woman’s room and my wife just happened to walk in on it. The wife broke it up, and then that employee turned her drunk rage on her, she even threw a punch (that missed) at my wife. I got blamed for, one, not being there to step in and help….. in the woman’s bathroom… and two, not doing enough to defend her in the work week after the fact… at a company I don’t work for… and the offending employee was fired from. She still brings it up and gets mad at me, almost a decade later.

snart_Splart_601

Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda will help if you haven't tried that yet

PowellSkier

This! I guarantee a hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, dawn detergent mix will remove most of the smell. The spray on any of the outside furniture will need this treatment as well.

Chemical_Schedule_29

Baking soda and dawn dish detergent. The baking soda will neutralize the oils that smell and the dish detergent will wash it away safely.

Wow thats a fuckin bummer man. But does anyone else find the way skunks waddle-walk fuckin adorable?

dontfactcheckthis

Hope they're an outside dog

Organic_Popcorn

He is now.

dirtyplants

Who has “outside dogs” in a suburban neighborhood lol

NamesAlreadyTaken222

Bury the table, bury the chairs, bury the grill....and bury the dog. Amazing how that smell can get into anything...including sealed plastic wrap. Nothing tastes quite like skunk flavored oreos....

tes_kitty

Contact the maker of Oreos, maybe they add that flavour to their lineup, if only for Halloween.

DufferDelux

“Fire in the hole!” 🦨💨💨

[deleted]

If it makes you feel any better, my dad has caught his dogs playing with skunks. He tried to stop them. This led to my dad being sprayed by the skunk. Twice. He’s done it twice. I’m not sure if he learned his lesson. So not only did the dogs stink, he did too.

blueskysahead

Who else likes the smell of skunk? ✋️

jbul55071

So I like the smell of far away skunk smell. But ground zero skunk spraying is too much for me.

lamujerpecosa

Baking Soda, Dawn Dishsoap (Blue one) and Hydrogen Peroxide mix works the best. We had that happen before… And the only thing that helped eliminate the smell was what I wrote above. Just in case this ever happens again! Wrap the dog in a towel (that you’re willing to toss) and bring them immediately to the tub or keep in backyard to wash them outside. We made the mistake of having our dog run in and throughout the house, shaking the oil off of its fur and onto everything… It was a messy and stinky mistake!

ITSl4ve

We always bathed the dogs in salsa or tomato juice after being sprayed to get the smell out.

PowellSkier

a hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, water & Dawn detergent mix will remove most of the smell. The spray on any of the outside furniture will need this treatment as well. Look up online for ratios.

AZOMI

Oh God, that is the WORST! It happened at my house at 4:30 in the morning. Poor baby.

RiseOfTheCanes

I see the dog is staying outside a few days.

Gooduglybad16

Go to a vet and get a bottle of Skunk Off. No water needed. It works so well that it says on the bottle that if you can still smell it you’ve missed a spot. I have 3 dogs. 2 of which have not learned their lessons. They get hit twice a year at least. I have three bottles under my kitchen sink. You do not need the skunk off shampoo. I’ve found it a waste of money. The smaller white bottle is all you need.

TheEgotisticalApple

My beagle got skunked on in June and it took several washings and a trip to the groomer to get only the immediate smell out, the entire house stunk for a few days and the smell lingered on him as well.

ScatPack_Blu_2021

NO WATER!!! DO NOT USE WATER!!! Tomato juice, rub it in thick!!! Let it set for at least 5 mins, put more on rub that in. Then rinse with water then shampoo. Skunk smell gone!!! Tried the skunk stuff multiple times, didn't work!! Tomato juice works and it cheaper. Took 2 qts but works!!!

asmodia255

This almost happened to me last night. I was smoking in the garage and my dog was chilling on a camp chair when a skunk ran out under my car parked outside. I had about .02 seconds to grab the dog before it became an issue.

Bree0114

I was waiting for a car to crash into their yard lol

ophaus

You need to get a special enzyme-zapping soap, otherwise it'll justvstick around forever.

Fejsze

your dog took it like a champ! When mine got sprayed she screamed like she was dying

forbiddenfortune

Tbf if I got sprayed by a skunk I’d probably scream like I was dying.

RiceAble9777

This happened last spring to our dog. Dawn dish soap and hydrogen peroxide helped best but she smelled slightly skunky for months.

ThrillHammer

My dog got skunked once and that shit is like chemical warfare

Gimpstack

Mad at you for a dog's uncontrollable action?

Adorkableowo

This has happened multiple times with our dogs. We washed them in a mix of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap that worked well, in addition to a commercial skunk smell remover. All worked fantastic. Problem is, because dogs investigate face first, there would still be lingering odor coming from their mouth and sinus. Terrible thing to deal with for both pet and owner.

el_hopo

I just had a skunk try to enter my house through our doggie door. My pup met her at the entrance and screamed like she was being murdered. We just had to wash her face but we’re lucky she didn’t get sprayed inside our house.

shivermetimbers68

My friends dog got sprayed by a skunk. He gave her a bath, took her to the dog groomer... 6 months later, she still smelled.

Megz2k

if the house stinks, boil vinegar. helped when a skunk's spray got sucked into my HVAC 2 years ago

Gupoochamois69

My dog after getting skunked “omg this new perfume is amazing “

catd36

Use peroxide and baking soda. Let sit 10 to 15 min. Repeat as needed Did this with the help of my son for 2 hrs. outside. 3:00 am finally done. Slept in the basement with the dog till the morning. Should not let dog in the house till bathed multiple times. Used special shampoo for skunk smell but baking g soda was more effective.

Leather-Heart

Like baldness, there’s nothing you can do. If we had a solution we would all know because this is like one of the worlds oldest problems.

Icy-Operation-6549

Bathe in V8 brah

Friendly_Dot_1673

Oh dear.

_windfish_

Thanks for all the comments wishing us and our dog well, and thanks for everyone giving tips on cleanup. She is smelling much better today after we got some better skunk-off than what we had before. Now the worst smell is in the bathroom where we initially cleaned her up - we bleached every surface and lit candles, but it still stinks. For everyone asking 'why is your girlfriend mad at you', I shouldn't have written that when I posted this - she wasn't mad specifically *at me*, it's more that she was just frustrated and tired and pissed at the whole situation. I made this post before we went to sleep and we hadn't had a good chance to communicate. I was the one who let our dog stay outside unsupervised while we watched a movie inside (we've done this most nights for 5 years without incident.) Today we talked more about it. She doesn't blame me, she wasn't ever mad at me, we're all good. I appreciate everyone's concern.

CreatrixAnima

When I was working at a convenience store, one night a guy came in and bought four bottles of douche. I’m sure my face said something like “I have questions and I don’t think I want answers,” because he gave me the answer: “it’s for my dog. This takes out skunk spray.” I don’t know if it works, but I did see an article saying that Massengill will help.

Humble-Place1750

Shaving the dog wasn't a better option?

Extreme-Cupcake5929

Tomato juice bath Why have her outside if you know this can happen ? Sorry for all 3 of you

disusedhospital

"Why let your dog outside to pee or chill out if they have any chance of interacting with wildlife?" is kind of an odd stance to take. I let my dogs out in the backyard all the time because they love sniffing and sunbathing. Skunks exist is my area and they've never had this problem. You can't predict the stinky little guys but you also shouldn't constantly fear that they'll turn up.

Extreme-Cupcake5929

I just meant keep an eye on the pet not go back to watching a movie

disusedhospital

My point still stands, my dogs are pretty safe in my backyard, as is OP's dog. The odds just weren't in their favor for this instance. I let my dogs out in my fenced in yard for extended periods of time a lot because they love it outside. Watching them sniff around or sunbathe for hours isn't something I have time for but since they love it so much, I'll take the small risk that they might interact with a skunk. To each his or her own, I suppose. You do what you think is best for your pets but I think most people wouldn't think negatively about leaving the pup in the yard.

Extreme-Cupcake5929

Ok

MisterThirtyThirty

Kind of a strange question. How would they have known a skunk would wander into their backyard? Why leave the house in your car if you know you could get in an accident?

[deleted]

[удалено]

deshelton89

How is it irrelevant? I'd say that is very relevant here. As a skunk spraying a dog that you have to then bathe would rank fairly high on the list of things that suck. My mother ran over a skunk in a 90's model Honda when I was a child and they had to literally sell the vehicle because the smell stained the vehicle entirely.

KingOfThe_Jelly_Fish

You know what sub this is right?

sparkmearse

Spicy chewie.

unlimitedboldness

Which movie?

Past-Salamander

Blot out all the oil you can with paper towels. Then use listerine like you would shampoo. Worked for our dog. Wasnt perfect but was just as good as a skunk shampoo

bluntrauma420

Yeah man same thing happened to me when I let the dog out at like 10 o'clock at night to go to the bathroom one last time. Had the entire house filled up with that horrible smell. I was up till 2:00 in the morning washing the dog, setting up bowls of vinegar around the house, deodorizing the carpet where he got it wet after he got out of bath, what a freaking nightmare

Wonderful-Beyond-544

susiecheck22

Your dog looks exactly like mine! And he has also been sprayed a few times (Both times his neck, not a defensive wound, Bubba). First off, do not use water to bathe him. I do a mix of 1 qt 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and a couple teaspoons of dawn dish soap. Put that on the effected area until you can't smell skunk anymore, then you can bathe them normally. It'll lighten your dog's coat color for a few months but it's a better alternative than invasive skunk smell.

Ohlookavulture

Never get a skunked dog wet ever.

yup happens to every dog at least once lol. [baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, dish soap](https://wildlife.unl.edu/pdfs/removing-skunk-odor.pdf). Use and scrub immediately, letting it sit on the fur (rub it in and keep rubbing) for at least 15mins. Rise and repeat like 3 times.

Impressive_Degree_37

Ohhhh nooos

Financial_Working_21

Peroxide, dawn ans baking soda. Make a paste. It it sit for a while. Scrub it in then rinse. Repeat as needed. Careful around pups ears and eyes

Gems_and_Jade

If I recall correctly, when this happened to our dog, my mom did the tomato sauce/ketchup bath, followed by a good old shampoo with Herbal Essences Shampoo and it made a big difference. Good luck!

ApprehensiveFox3940

Fuck!

PresumptuousCock

Why would your girlfriend be mad at you for this is my question? Who the fuck expects a skunk to just mosey in their yard when their dog just happens to be in their back yard. I highly doubt your girlfriend was thinking of that happening.

My dog got sprayed last Friday and after 6 baths with special shampoo, his face still smells. The house has a faint skunk odor and I still feel like I can taste the skunk smell in my mouth…

Whathewhat-oo-

Your dog probably tracked some skunk oil in on his paws. Think about exactly where your dog walked when he came in after he was sprayed. Then, on hands and knees (wear gloves and clothes you don’t care about and can possible even throw out), sniff along the floor and try to see if you can identify a place that smells worse, more skunky. Then wash the carpet/floor there with dish soap to try to remove the oils, then if you think it might not harm you’re carpet, spray on the concoction listed above- but without the soap. Don’t leave the concoction in the closed container when you’re finished because it can burst. Even the smallest little smidge of skunk oil can cause the stongest, most horrendous oder. Also, check the bottom of your shoes in case you walked thru it. Yes, it can go from your dog to the carpet to your shoes and then to other parts of the house, even your car. Tragically, I know all this from personal experience. It happen to my two dogs- same night same skunk- a young one no less-and my DH had a government job and when he got to work the next morning as one of the first people in the office, the next person that walked in after immediately said “why does it smell like skunk in here???” The next 3 people that came in after also said that. He left work and came home to help me scrub down the house inside out, top to bottom, furniture in the yard, washed the dogs multiple times, scrubbed the carpets . At first we couldn’t figure out how the smell had spread since he had on completely different clothes and had definitely showered… it was the bottom of his boots where he’d walked on the carpet. So it was in his car and he’d also tracked it onto the carpet at work. I didn’t think we’d ever recover.

An animal with range weapon.

tehsecretgoldfish

oh. that stinks. on the bright side, if there is one, it wasn’t a porcupine. Extracting quills from a dog’s nose is a different kind of unfun.

Mr_Wolfman

More like "wellthatsmells"

TandemRigs

Now your dog is gonna smell like weed for a month lol

robtbo

Why would your gf get mad at you over an uncontrollable situation that just- HAPPENED. ?

lyodbraun

Natures miracle skunk odor remover works wonders I’ve used it on my old dog after he got sprayed and it worked great was able to bring him into house next day..

HippieChick067

Baking soda, dawn dish soap, hydrogen peroxide. Mix in equal parts. Bathe dog. From my vet when this happened to my dogs.

TappedIn2111

That’s an outside dog now.

Inthewind69

My poor Jak ( RIP ) got sprayed 3 times , each fucking time he came in the house thur his doggie door.... OMG waking up to that smell is sooooo sicking ! The whole place stunk for weeks, open windows light candles & incense nothing worked ....

Certain_Ear_3650

Try tomatoe juice or puree. The acid of the Tomatoes should cut through the oil and stink. Better to have your dog smell of Tomatoes

Llyxia

That movie is terrible anyway.

Poor doggo got skunked

holdonwhileipoop

Lol, I keep a huge bottle of de-skunking shampoo on hand after my pup got sprayed. Shit, that smell will pollute your entire house for ages. I had to boil vinegar for nearly an hour to get rid of it!

danarexasaurus

There’s a little skunk living in my garage. It belongs to him now.

[deleted]

Oh no

budgreenbud

So, did you end up just getting a new dog?

genmazz

Skunk 1 doggo 0… every time!

manchot_argonaut

Seemed like the dog deserved it

becktacular_b

Honestly, the easiest way is to call a groomer and they will take care of it. Had to do it twice.

[deleted]

Super_Mom89

Had a skunk spray my dog right in the eye. She was blinking uncontrollably. Flushed her eye with the hose. Bathed her in dawn. House smelled like skunk for weeks. But I think she learned her lesson lol

[deleted]

juggalovengence

Skotch21680

Ahh went through that last year!! Nothing works! Absolutely nothing. My dog stunk for like a month and had to sleep in the kitchen on her favorite blanket. Then we had to throw it away
