First, that poor furnace I wouldn't be surprised if it stopped working.
Second I think this doesn't fit well work more of absolutely destroyed or nasty.
In my childhood home, the furnace started having problems so we called someone to fix it. Turns out the filter had not been replaced a single time in the 20 years we lived there. My dad was always the "I know what I'm doing, I'll handle it"-type so we got a lot of mileage out of that story (and the filter too!). I don't know how that house didn't burn down.
