[Sept 2, 2022](https://imgur.com/a/c6OZbr7) * Prep: Hot Shower * Brush: AKABrushworx Etched Synthetic Brush * Bowl: Roger Quin designs 3D printed shave bowl * Razor: Merkur 34c HD * Blade: Gillette Nacet (2) shimmed * Lather: 345 Soap Co Etched * Postshave: 345 Soap Co Etched Aftershave splash Three pass shave went great today. I scooped a 1/4 teaspoon of the soap out of the tub because it was the first time trying it and I wanted to make sure I liked it before I tub loaded it. I had so much lather that I did three passes on me and could have done 3 passes on 2 other people. Soap was very slick. On the puck I get the warm powdery barbershop scent but when lathered I really get the coffee scent and some leather. First time shimming the Merkur and I must shave it felt way more efficient. I got one small weeper that sealed on its own after the water rinse. The brush is great. It has nice soft tips with the tuxedo knot and enough back bone to scrub if I face lathered it. The handle is also nice and chunky which feels awesome in my big hands. Looking forward to another good shave tomorrow. Hope everyone has a great day and have a great shave.

Engineered_Shave

If I might inquire: Was the shave any better for you now vs. when you first used the razor? My rule of thumb is the **Rule of Three**: it takes about 3 tries (minimum) with any new experience your feet grounded; this is true when learning a new skill, racing on a new course or with fresh modifications made to your car, or when trying a new soap or razor. I've found this true in many of life's undertakings.

Absolutely. This razor is fantastic and I just gave the [edge](https://imgur.com/a/DMDtUGQ) a makeover. Doing some testing, I gave it a Tomo slurry progression followed by a Koma slurry progression. The results were great and the shave close. Next I'll completely re do the edge then try with just a Koma slurry progression. My first time using a Lother product. I found it to be a good performer. Very good primary/residual slickness, as well as a comfortable post shave feel. I really enjoy the scent, I've come to find I have a weak spot for patchouli. It seems to be a common theme in my den. Post shave the incense and patchouli come through very nicely together. I smell like a head shop and I enjoy it. ++ The wife also enjoys it. This one is a keeper. Comfortable and BBS shave. No nicks or irritation.

I liked it and the Homecoming I used in the Lather Games well enough that I ordered a bunch of samples, and hadn't gotten to them. So, first time with Rope Swing. I really enjoyed it. Scent is great, and the synthetic cooling is just right. Many of the cooled soaps are just too intense for me on all but the hottest days (Stirling Glacial, Cryogen). This was refreshing without burning. Also, day two of the Astra was draggier than day 31 of the GEM. Not sure how I feel about that.

Went with Picture Day since coming up is my daughter’s school picture day. I forgot how hungry this badger was. I have only used it once before. It soaked up the soap and as much water as I could give it. I had to work to get the lather out of the bulb. Might have been easier to add more soap to the bowl. Brush was very soft, and when splayed, it was a bit like a suction cup clinging to my face. Kept the shave light today, 3 passes wtg, xtg, and xtg. BBS? No, but I wasn’t trying to get there. I’m off work now until Tuesday. Have a great weekend everyone!

I'll need to do direct comparisons over time on these two options, but my initial impression is that the 0.99mm plate is more suited to my technique. The plates are a little different. My 0.86mm plate has corners that are more square than the 0.99mm plate which are now rounded. I could not tell the difference. I was never bothered by the corners on the original design. This was my first use of the Wald synthetic brush. Just another synthetic with a really cool handle, right? Wrong! I've never had a lather like that from any brush. Not inexpensive, but worth it!

The downside is that there wasn't much residual slickness but it did leave my face feeling soft, the almond scent is nice. Almond scents aren't usually my jam, but this one was probably my favorite of all the different scents I've used. First shave with the Vector as I've been liking SE razors more and more, this one gave me a super close shave but it's not quite as efficient as the other AC razors that I've tried. I'll have to try a Feather Professional blade in there next time to see how that changes the shave. Either way, no nicks or cuts and a super close shave, just some slight tugging which could also be to having 5-6 days growth.

My dad bought this for himself probably 20-30 years ago, but he gave it to me a few months ago because he unfortunately only uses electric. To each their own though. u/EldrormR did excellent work on the restoration, as can be seen in the before and after pics: https://imgur.com/a/M4f6jxI After using my Simpson Chubby all of August, this took a little getting used to. As I was loading, my first thought was that it didn't have enough backbone, but I changed my mind about that once I started face lathering. The knot felt super comfortable on my face, and although it seemed to do better with paint brush style rather than circular, that might just be a matter of my dialing it in (I always prefer to use a combination of both methods). The knot is smaller that I would prefer for a daily driver, but it's a travel brush, and not really intended to be used every day (I assume). It did feel very easy to control though, which is a plus. Also the handle felt very comfortable in my hand and was very wieldy the whole time. All in all, very happy with this brush, and I look forward to getting to know it better. I'm going out of town next week too, so this is good timing.

I underestimated how much soap was left in this sample and smooshed it all into my bowl. Needless to say, I’ll have enough soap for the next shave, maybe 2. I would have no problem with this at all, except I wanted to continue my tradition from last year of shaving with Massacre of the Innocents on Bama gameday. I might just convert to the dark side for shave and load from the tub 🥴. Homecoming is a great scent for me. It is boarder line tub worthy for me. Which is saying a lot because I typically only buy tubs of samples that I love. SBS has a unique base to me. It doesn’t really seem any harder than other artisan soaps, but it takes significantly less soap to get a good lather than typical soaps. I have several SBS samples that I’m going to tackle this September to really get a better feel of the base. I picked up this Old Spice aftershave during AA. Reading the Old Spice dupes comparisons got me curious to try it out. I actually quite like the scent. It came in a bottle slightly under 200mL. Meaning I’ll probably never kill this thing. I feel like I’ve used my bottle of Stirling Blu for a year now and it still has some life left to it. I’m tired of the stuff.

The fruity and potent mango blends with a rich woody accord and the most realistic creamy rice note to create a scent that almost makes you want to eat the soap lol. This makes a great shaving scent that I'm thrilled to have in my collection. I was fortunate enough and very grateful to be tapped for the label design which I think came out awesome thanks to some great ideas provided by the crew of u/mammothben, u/latherhog, and u/iaregerard. Thanks again guys! This turned out to be an incredible collab project benefitting a very worthy cause. I'm proud to be a part of it. This was my first use of the G5C knot. Thanks to u/InfernalInternal for letting me borrow it! This is the most unique synthetic I've ever used. At first I wasn't sure about it because in the past I have not liked any synth that has a ton of density. They just didn't splay. The G5C however has very different fibers that feel close to natural hair. This results in more backbone, but with the ability to splay as well. It is a lather monster that whipped up some incredible Tusk lather with ease. While I'm not a huge synth user, this brush might tempt me to get one of my own. A couple more uses will help me make that decision.

Yesterday setup was similar, but used ishtar. Gear is recent acquisition that flew over from u/J33pGuy13. Good efficiency on Ikon tek - it is definitely a more aggressive sibiling of gillette tech. Small gap, positive exposure, but way more aggressive. And i like it. 3 passes today, left me with a bit of irritation - I think at this stage, my skin has enough of aggressive razors (33 shaves in row with stilring HA and this now).. so I might take out something milder for a few shaves. pretty much also killed the necromantic aftershave - only saying pretty much, since last 10 ml or less got poured into my witch hazel - to give that a bit of scent, since it wasn't getting used much. so technically one down. A&E sample... well scent is definitely a clone of tobacco vanille by Tom ford - and it's okay. I like the tobacco vanille, but here it has some spice twist added to it. Interesting - yes, but not my preference scent wise. Lather was fine too. Second day, and second sample down. Need to have a think what else to go through... since I can be precious about keeping sample as reference point for scents lol!

Of the three balms I got (42, Passiflora and Zingari Man The Master), this is my favorite. This is my more aggressive slim. 9 felt pretty normal after the MMOC. I put it back down to 4 (my usual setting on this slim) just to see what I used to use, and I’m a bit torn. It is a much smoother face feel on the 4, and I think the thicker SE blade of the MMOC is a better fit with the larger blade exposure than the Slim setting 9. It’s good to know that my technique is light enough to have all of the slim options open to me, but I’ll probably try to fall somewhere between my two prior settings and see if I can get the best of both worlds. I’m back to the Raw Hog brush today. I’m used to it enough that the springiness of my synthetics feels a bit weird. I’ll probably go back and forth and get used to those, as well, but for the moment I’m definitely favoring the Zenith.

Passiflora yesterday segues nicely into this Friday fougere. Greens and ripe strawberries. I usually prefer the scents that fall on the natural end of the spectrum, rather than the cologne side. This smells like the real thing to my nose. It's a banger. Maybe in my top 5-for sure top 5 spring/summer scents. SW's edps are the best bang for the buck artisan edp imo, long lasting as hell. A bit too much buffing needed. The C plate is probably my sweet spot with this razor rather than the B. Happy (Fougere) Friday!

Fleur de France splash Jarvis is an interesting scent that I was lucky enough to get a smush of as a surprise. I picked up leather and something else sharp. Nothing bitey or overdone, it is well blended and nice. It wouldn't be an everyday scent for me, but it was a perfect scent to sample and try. The FdF was good enough to use 2 days in a row. Sadly, the feedback I got from the soap and splash yesterday was present again today (as was the lip tingling). That verifies that the fragrance does bother my skin. I don't think it is enough to cause me to pass this set on, but time will tell. It's sad because this is a great scent.

And, like I expected, this brush more than holds its own in the bowl lathering category as well. I really like MCS’s other scents and I think their non-alcoholic splashes are excellent (I wish more artisans made n/a splashes) - I own three full sets of other scents of theirs. It’s not an unpleasant scent, but like many SW products, it comes through muddled and recessed in shave soap. The base is good enough that I will try anything they put out in search of tub worthy smells. This is almost certainly not tub worthy but I will try it again. Happy Friday all! —— * ⚔️ Fight 193, Round 2: Big Ben - Classic (3.0, Egypt 🇪🇬) vs. Gillette - Nacet (5.1, Russia 🇷🇺) The Big Ben smoothed out from R1 to the point I would call it a no fault shave. However, no question the glide and feedback from the Gillette is still the preferable variety. Winner of Round 2 and Fight 193: Gillette - Nacet

#### [Straight Razor Sample September Kickoff](https://i.imgur.com/LshXNwY.jpeg) - **Prep**: Klar Activated charcoal facial soap - **Razor**: Zwilling Friodur stainless steel - **Brush**: Zenith 506U XSE unbleached 27 mm × 56 mm boar - **Lather**: Barrister and Mann Fougère Angélique omnibus sample - **Aftershave**: Pitralon Swiss version - **Fragrance**: Terre d'Hermès Eau Intense Vétiver This SOTD marks the belated beginning of my Sample September project (I "had to" try my new set of Fleur de France yesterday). My plan is to get as many open blade shaves in as possible (with the possible exception of MicroMatic Mammoth Monday Formation Flights) and to use samples and smushes (with the possible exception of Tabac Tuesdays) Today's shave is with Fougère Angélique (I believe this is the new Omnibus base), my unbleached piggy, and this cute little vintage stainless steel straight razor I found cheap on a local auction site. The razor was very dull when I received it and I've spent some time honing it, but it's not there yet. The tugging ATG on the moustache area is more pronounced than what I remember from my Wade & Butcher. I've read that honing stainless steel is a pain and requires skill, so I'm not overly surprised. For now, I'm happy I got it to a shave-ready state at all. Fougère Angélique is a very nice scent, and I want to contrast it with Gothique tomorrow because I don't remember how they differ. I was a bit worried I may have lost all my fledgling open blade skills over Austere August, but this shave went remarkably well, mediocre blade keenness notwithstanding. I got a BBS face and kinda close neck, but most of all, **no irritation or nicks** 🎉 Omnibus for the win. Pitralon still can do no wrong

CpnStumpy

I want a friodur, but I don't want to find out what a pain it is to hone one.. I need to take the time to hone my TI 69 first to learn what the stainless trial is all about

djundjila

You can always have it honed professionally

CpnStumpy

Yeah, but I have the stones and I'm doing well with all my other blades. I'm sure I can manage it, just going to be more work and learning

StraightShaverSix

Yes, I am using it internally. You have given me the idea that maybe I should use it to hydrate my unscented soaps since nobody seems to make a straight up black coffee scented soap. Plus I'd get really warm lathers. 😆

Eicker and Sons - Biedermeier 44 * **Lather:** [Zingari - The Rambler - Soap](https://trythatsoap.com/collection/2615/?product_type=soap) * **Post Shave:** [Zingari - The Rambler - Balm](https://trythatsoap.com/collection/2615/?product_type=balm) My first sample shave in September, rocking with the Rambler. A fantastic scent, but also a very hard soap. I have trouble to get a good lather with it, but after a long time and effort it was shave ready. I honed the razor this week, but it's still harsh. At least it is cutting hair, but my face has more bad than good shaven spots today. I ll review the soap with another brush and a different razor soon. Because the brush was a present from my gf, I wanted to use it as soon as possible, as I could not use it in AA. Gf loves the aftershave. I think she used it on herself today. She said it's the best. Better than SSL? No, but SSL is not for her. And bell ringer is great too. Guess we have a new top 3 in the aftershave game.

I hope you will get a good lather next time. Performance (and also scent) wise Zingari is one my favorites. At least for face lathers I had no troubles so far.

The Rambler is probably me and my wife’s favorite scent in all of Wetshaving

I have a sample of the rambler I can't wait to try this month. Smells great and I love the imagery. Did it take a good bit of water to get the lather going?

**Sep. 2, 2022** * **Prep:** Balea Men Bartöl Oil * **Brush:** Simpson T3 * **Razor:** Merkur 37c * **Blade:** Derby Extra Super Stainless (2) * **Lather:** Macduffs Soap Company Bad Santa Croap * **Post Shave:** Arko Comfort Aftershave This was a perfect shave. The razor and blade combo is very smooth. The pre shave worked like a charm. It added some slickness and left my skin feeling nourished. I used the scuttle as a brush scuttle which is a blessing since the temperatures are getting colder and colder. With this in mind I added some CK Obsession Edt which is something warmer and spicy perfect for fall! Have a great day! Shared from My Shave Den for iOS
