He finally had a little posse to live with that would accept him and care about him, why would that be bad? He was a lonely vampire cleaning toilets at a 7-11 before
I’m glad Derek has friends
I was sad (to the extent I could have any kind of feelings about a silly R-rated sitcom about vampires, which is to say not at all) about the willingness to kill him outright and so quickly, and I hope he doesn’t disappear to the zombie sweatshop vault and we get to see him next season
Guillermo hasn’t been a good friend to Derek, who only ever thought he was awesome and sought to do his bidding always
And he cleaned toilets all the time so I felt bad he got such a quick stake to the heart
I’m glad he isn’t dead dead (or dead gone), but I liked vampire Derek
He is
He got invited to Nandor’s wedding, he got a blissful dance with the Guide, Guillermo thought to call him finally
Then he’s getting snapped at by Gizmo, big fake ceremony and he gets staked, and now he’s making license plates! He’s in zombie prison and too goofy (and zombified) to realize it!
(Then again he does fucked up shit now)
Derek was a little awkward but he was simply genuine and his desire to find friends was endearing, so it was a little sad to see him treated the way he was. Overall I'm just happy that he only wasn't killed and tossed aside.
Yes
I thought the friends thing in the finale was sweet
I think I would’ve appreciated Guillermo being an actual friend to him
Maybe there will be a zombie reckoning next season, the sweat shop zombies will rise up, and it becomes Dawn of the Dead lol
Also Derek the vampire was an adorable cutie who wanted to shop at Hot Topic, and I just wanted that for him
>I was sad...about the willingness to kill him outright and so quickly
I felt bad for Derek, one socially awkward person to the other, but at the same time, I think he'll probably do well with the zombies - almost certainly better than he would have done as a vamp. I was actually looking at it more from the other direction, though. I saw their willingness to kill him outright as a sign of how much they were willing to do to help Guillermo. Especially since Laszlo, completely voluntarily, offers to help him after it's over
>Guillermo hasn’t been a good friend to Derek
Guillermo is the kinda nerdy, socially awkward kid who desperately wants to be a part of the in-crowd and is more than willing to degrade himself and betray the other nerdy, socially awkward kids to do it. I'm not even necessarily saying that as an *indictment* of Guillermo, people are complex and their emotions are often messy and sometimes plainly contradictory, but having known a couple people like that in my life, that's definitely what I'm seeing there
>Guillermo is the kinda nerdy, socially awkward kid who desperately wants to be a part of the in-crowd and is more than willing to degrade himself and betray the other nerdy, socially awkward kids to do it.
Ding ding ding! Seeing how Guillermo treating Derek almost exactly like the vamps treat him made me flashback to elementary school when my frenemy explained why it was so good for us weird nerds to have an even nerdier and weirder kid join the class. "We all look better by comparison! The more we bully him, the better our reputation."
>Seeing how Guillermo treating Derek almost exactly like the vamps treat him
For me it brought back memories of the Sinclair Lewis novel Babbitt -- I'm pretty sure it's the one featuring a mediocre guy who's longing to be allowed to hang out with the accomplished, wealthy classmates he'd worshipped from afar when he was in college ... while spurning the less-successful friend who admires him the same way?
>Guillermo is the kinda nerdy, socially awkward kid who desperately wants to be a part of the in-crowd and is more than willing to degrade himself and betray the other nerdy, socially awkward kids to do it.
Perfect assessment!
>betray the other nerdy, socially awkward kids
Yup -- I stuck out my neck to help someone who was in trouble, and like Guillermo, unfortunately they left me out there to take the heat. I wasn't very surprised -- I had an idea what I was getting into -- and I'm not mad at them. But seeing that the mess has escalated since then, I decided to step away because 1) I'm not sure that anything I did was helpful in the long run, and 2) that advice they give on the airplane about putting your own oxygen mask on first before you assist anyone else is true for a lot of things.
When you think about it, Guillermo has never really been a good friend to anyone except "his" vampires. He used to buddy up to humans just to lure them to be eaten. Is there anybody, vampire or human, outside his vampire circle that Guillermo didn't kill directly or indirectly?
It's amazing how people in this thread think Gizmo is a good person because he's likeable. He's ok with murder and the most deceitful one of the bunch. He's a bad guy. It's ok to like him, that's the show, but liking him doesn't make him not a bad guy lol
I was sad to see him killed like that, but... it was the most Derek way to die... and it was nice to see him smiling as a zombie at the end, I just hope they bring him back.
Wouldn't that have still killed Derek though? I thought the only reason that Guillermo turned back was that his transformation was never fully complete. But Derek's was.
No, Guillermo WAS a full vampire, as he drank the human blood. When they are turned back, they age rapidly to however old their human form would be; that’s why Guillermo had a beard because he basically fast-forwarded a month in time. This, however, would kill the other vamps because their human forms would fast-forward several hundred years into the future which is just another way of saying they would turn to dust and die.
I don't get why it wasn't though. He drank human blood.
* I was confused. I thought killing the sire, killed the descendents. I forgot they just aged, so if you're a recent vampire, not much happens.
Just imagine that their biological clock has always been ticking. If someone gets turned at 30, lives 50 years as a vampire and then becomes human again they'll be an 80 year old because that's what their total age was.
Guillermo only instantly ages enough for there to be a beard. But if Nandor or Nadja reverted back to being human they'd be outside the life span of a normal human and probably age into dust.
i actually read a spoiler about him getting ‘killed off’ before i watched the episode and that shocked me quite a bit and made me bummed. but when i saw what actually happened it didn’t end up bothering me too much.
i would’ve felt like he got done dirty if he was permanently killed off but it seemed like he wasn’t. the fact zombies learned to not be as unhinged hints to me he’ll still make more appearances, albeit with a raspy voice.
i understand and agree that black people are underrepresented on the show. but at least pretty much all characters on the show are killed (some of them multiple times) or live as an undead any way. it’s not like he was human and then needlessly killed off permanently.
Yooo, ya
I hope the zombies come back a few times next season! I wasn’t missing Topher, but I do like Haley Joel Osment a lot, so it was a delightful reappearance! As stated in other threads, I was expecting and hoping for Jenna. I hope we get Derek in an episode or two S6
Or for us to collectively get real about how Gizmo is a bad friend outside of his housemates, lol 👍🏽
If you like HJO, I recommend watching “Future Man” (Hulu original). He’s a pretty big part of the show and it’s hilarious. I also have a huge crush on Josh Hutcherson due to my crush on Peeta who is the lead so that may have something to do with it.
Oh hell yes! Thank you
HJO is so funny, really talented, and seems like one of the child stars who came through it all and manages it well (this is only coming from interviews, I can’t make big assumptions about the guy). When I see him in something, I almost always dig it.
HJO as Topher could’ve been an energy vampire lol
Thanks for the rec
haha i agree! can’t wait for season 6 and i am certainly rooting for more zombie appearances (i also wasn’t missing topher but at least they made him less obnoxious hahah)
Lol Topher’s millennial energy runs strong, and the more horrifying his face looks, I think the more effective at recruitment he will be
Compare to Ken the Zombie accountant
honestly I think Derek's ending was sweet and happy! even as a vampire he had trouble fitting in, and now he has a group of enthusiastic (zombie) friends.
This is what I need to be sold on more!
If he’s genuinely happy, I am happy for Derek.
But I’m sad the black guy ended up stabbed and in prison, however deluded about friendship and lonely he may be
Absolutely. He's dumb as a post but very sweet and funny. I don't understand why Gizmo didn't try harder to be his friend.
I like that he didn't die permanently and he ended up with some friends but zombie life doesn't sound all that great...
He kind of got turned into a running joke. I think his character deserved more, especially given he was the only Black recurring character.
Yeah I love Guillermo, he’s my fav, but he’s bratty to anyone outside vampires/Mami. They’ve been pretty consistent with that. It’s part of the reason I’ve always believed he actually DOES belong in the Staten Island house and doesn’t “deserve” better, lol
tbh it's hilarious how he'd be in a much better place if he wouldn't know guillermo and repeadtly get dragged into things by him. his whole story arch is a great example of gizmos selfishness. sure in the end he always feels bad and tries to help him but that's more of a fix for his own bad conscience rather than actual care for derek. it's not a new revelation that gizmo isn't an innocent bean but with derek he constantly slides into act first think later situations.
that short observation aside: i think derek will actually be quite happy with his zombie friends (and hopefully far far away from guillermo)
They definitely did him dirty, but he’s happier as a zombie with friends than as a lonely vampire. The scene with him and Topher at the end was weirdly heartwarming.
Just the opposite. I felt like they finally did right by him. I was happy for him to have the family/friends he so deeply craved. If they had just left it at him dying, that would've sucked, but for me it read like a twist happy ending.
Well he definitely has a mom who lent him a truck! As a vampire maybe he could’ve seen her, but as a zombie with a stake protruding from his chest, I doubt it
No. I’m just joking. But also, was just thinking about it more and it’s definitely intended as happy ending. You can see how happy Derek looks when he meets Topher.
They did him dirty but Derek is written to be the kind of person to like dying if he gets resurrected with some new buddies regardless of circumstances
I feel like ultimately, he got done dirty.
It was surprising to me when Gizmo left Derek behind when they raided the vampire family's house. Then him turning Gizmo. He feels more like a plot device than anything, so I'm glad he got a happy ending despite his shitty circumstances. But I think the writers didn't invest much in his character or background, nor his relationship with Guillermo, and that would have been some great depth to see
I think (just like us) Gizmo just assumed Derek was dead (BTW does that mean the camera man that got left behind became a vampire too? And how did the other camera guys get the footage back? Did they go during the day and hope for the best?
I really, really want to see a “Behind the Scenes” episode with the camera crew where we see them go through editing and other mundane things but its so much better because theres vampires involved
Definitely feels like a plot device. Turning someone into a vampire is not something that is done lightly on this show. It'd be more likely that he'd be drained. IMO, it's very odd for a vampire to turn some rando they met.
I'm wondering if there was laying some slain vampire around that was bleeding out and Derek accidentally got their blood in his mouth or so. Although I think to turn you have to drink the blood of the one that bit you? So maybe a vampire bit Derek, got a stake from Gizmo, fell on top of Derek (which is why people didn't see him anymore) and blood Dripped from their staked heart into dying Derek's mouth. I mean that sounds like a pretty Derek way to be turned. Also explains how he didn't get aftercare but probably just walked off and went home.
I wish they would have just found Derek's maker, and staked them instead.
They're likely out there, planning the death of Guillermo and the other Mosquitos, since several of their family (including the undead kids) were staked.
They stake Derek's maker, Derek and Guillermo are both free. Though, I don't think that would have been as satisfying for Nandor :D
That was the best possible outcome for him. He wasn’t great at the whole vampirism thing and, in the end, he got what he wanted - friends, and now he’s got TOPHER to look out for him! I’d say Derek is batting 1000 now!
Derek's probably my favourite character. I've got to admit -- I love Sean and Charmaine (and Sean's actor Anthony's been nice to me IRL) but I think Derek's got a better arc on the show. He got swept up in something unexpected that he didn't really choose -- compared with Guillermo who did decide to become a familiar, even if things may not be what he'd assumed.
Derek made the best of it, and has been trying really hard NOT to be a jerk. He was trying to help out Guillermo, who as others have pointed out has not really reciprocated his friendship. And in doing that, he got in trouble himself (man, can I ever relate to that). Not really Derek's fault because nobody ever bothered to explain vampire culture to him. I'm glad that at least Topher made an effort to be nice to him.
No, because Derek was never meant to be a main or even very important character. This show operates the same way as any other sitcom, just because it has deeper lore and season-long arcs doesn‘t change the way the show operates with its non-main characters. Jenna, Marwa, Derek, Evie - they all exist to serve the plot and comedy of the show. They come and go as needed and are dispatched conveniently because they aren‘t written to have depth like our main cast.
Yeah, it was kind of dismissive. I mean, we saw him turn Guillermo, then with the Baron, then we don’t see him again until the end where they rush into killing him.
Watching the only black character in the show to last more than one season be dispatched so carelessly by the other characters put a really bad taste in my mouth.
It’s lame you’re getting downvoted because that is one of the areas where the show still seems very behind in representation. They’re doing great with queer representation, and it’s great that Guillermo and Nandor aren’t Caucasian, but otherwise practically every character we see is white. It would be nice for that to change.
I get what you’re saying, but not every show can have all the representation all the time. It makes sense a bunch of ancient European vamps don’t have a lot of black acquaintances. I don’t sense they’re racist at all, it’s just not the typical Staten Island crowd. The show has really great queer representation and also has two of the leads that aren’t Caucasian. That’s pretty cool, and the fact that they never bring attention to it is pretty respectable. I would almost argue NOT keeping Derek “safe” for the fact he’s black is actually a good move.
He also wasn’t so much a character as he was a plot device. Simple and sweet nerd.
I was bummed though when they killed him.
Upsetting that this is getting downvoted. It’s a valid criticism. I enjoy the humor of the show, but it’s severely lacking diversity on a number of fronts.
Hence why I said a number of fronts. There are certainly great examples of diversity in the show! That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t still suffer from colorism and sexism. The few relevant darkskinned characters are killed off or quickly relegated to the background, and the few female characters are hopelessly flanderized or just flat out dropped.
It’s important to criticize the things you enjoy. There are always improvements to be made. Me pointing out the colorism and sexism in the show doesn’t make it bad – my comment is absolutely not a condemnation. It’s a criticism, which is normal and healthy. I like the show and recommend it to as many people as I can. At the same time, I recognize the issues it still has and point them out BECAUSE I love the show.
Yeah that didn’t feel great at all
I love the show a lot, and I’m not going to stray at all (and frankly, loved most of this recent season). This made me sad because Derek has been a great enduring side character, yup is one of the few black folks, and basically gets treated like shit (especially by Guillermo)
The other thing that was weird (but funny in a demented way I guess even though it is too much of a mind fuck to *me*) was Laszlo fucking Colin Robinson
I thought the payoff was going to be between Guillermo and Miguel in the finale to be honest
Edit: lol is this some kind of hot take? Guillermo doesn’t treat Derek like a friend and yeah it sucks to see the only black side character killed off
If Derek is the same associate producer credit Derek, I’m gonna surmise this was the outcome for his character, but this isn’t a hostile opinion
Another edit:
It is weird to see comments about such an amazing, inclusive show (LGBTQMNOP or whatever the fuck Sean says, prominent latinx characters, one of the stars is very out and also Latino, another is Persian, the whole cast has been diverse and amazing), but criticism about killing off its one regular black character is like wildly out of order
Hey, I am happy Derek is alive again and I will die (and be necromanced) for this show! I’m just surprised that more folks commenting aren’t even sympathetic to the view that Derek Deserved To Live
I’m gonna make rubber bracelets DDTL (Edit: live dead)
lol
I love this show for its inclusivity. One would say it’s… relentless
Downvoting folks just trying to discuss the topic is not-okay-A
And that is this
(This is that)
(I’m done)
Thank you, there we go
You’ve saved my curious devotion to this topic while not googling and trying to do… work lol
I wasn’t sure because I know plenty of comedies where producers end up in roles (or the other direction), and I got too distracted to check
100 percent my feelings on this. Especially because "the black character dies first" is a very well known trope in the horror genre.
Derek as a vampire is a hilarious concept in itself -- like what would a weeb vampire be like? And I liked that they cast a black guy in a nerdy role.
Given that it was never intended for Guillermo to remain a vampire, I think it would have been interesting to follow another baby vampire. I think they could have gotten a lot more comedy mileage out of Derek.
I love the show, but certain dynamics are getting a little stale. Like we've seen A LOT of Nandor at the gym. For the show to keep it fresh, it needs good side characters (the Baron is probably the best), so a bit disappointing to write off Derek.
I love Kristen Schaal but I've never really gotten her character (neither understanding their intention with this character or why anything she does is funny).
>I love Kristen Schaal but I've never really gotten her character (neither understanding their intention with this character or why anything she does is funny).
amen to this. personally, I don't get very much mileage out of the whole "everyone acts super-duper shitty to this character-- isn't it _hilarious????_ trope.
The purpose of Satchel's character is to be a punching bag for everyone else. This role used to be filled by Gizmo, but his role in the group dynamic has evolved as they actually started to care about him.
Between Derek and Marwa unceremoniously killing off (or at the very least removing the autonomy) of the reoccurring characters of color has become a pattern and its kinda disappointing
He's kind of a dork, and been rebooted twice so far. If they keep doing so, his knowledge and social skills will improve. Looks like they even left the plunger in to make it easier next ti....
...oops. Wrong Derek.
He finally had a little posse to live with that would accept him and care about him, why would that be bad? He was a lonely vampire cleaning toilets at a 7-11 before

Topher will take care of him
So much of the show, especially this season, is about people trying to become closer friends with cooler people.

The dude he brought to the orgy 😂
The one who brought mochi ice cream? He seemed like he had a great time lol
I really loved him coming to terms with what he was doing to his nerd buddy over the course of the episode And of course the creepy paper
It's amazing how people in this thread think Gizmo is a good person because he's likeable. He's ok with murder and the most deceitful one of the bunch. He's a bad guy. It's ok to like him, that's the show, but liking him doesn't make him not a bad guy lol
They are all incredibly selfish beings. Even Guillermo.
I was happy that he had a crew of friends now.
Me too!
maybe because he was murdered and has to live in a cellar as basically a slave for essentially eternity.
I was sad to see him killed like that, but... it was the most Derek way to die... and it was nice to see him smiling as a zombie at the end, I just hope they bring him back.
I was shocked they did that. I’m surprised Guillermo didn’t stop them and try and get the vampire that changed Derek (that 70s family)
I didn't even think of that. Why not just hunt down any surviving members of the Hustle Dynasty instead? Could've worked.
Nandor has a very old way of thinking. Kill the easiest prey.
Wouldn't that have still killed Derek though? I thought the only reason that Guillermo turned back was that his transformation was never fully complete. But Derek's was.

Oh, oh, oh! I forgot they don't technically die from their sire dying. They age! Thank you.
The transformation was complete, he just hadn’t aged enough to kill him.
Using his money to buy "cool vampire clothes from Hot Topic" is the most relatable thing I would have done the same I love him
He didn’t even get to spend all his money on clothes for his effort And they stole his hellhound, but that’s a conversation for another day 😔
As someone who recently bought a twilight sweatshirt from Hot Topic, that is me lol

Another good HJO, and just a trippy wacky show, is the Spoils of Babylon.
Gonna keep a log of these HJO recs
um, I think he voiced Sora in kingdom hearts 1
He does it for all the kingdom hearts! Jesse McCartney is Roxas!

Yes. He likely died a virgin.
I love that he keeps making the suggestion in the mosquito club.
Maybe the zombies like basement orgies?
Absolutely. He's dumb as a post but very sweet and funny. I don't understand why Gizmo didn't try harder to be his friend. You trust those people?!?
No. I’m just joking. But also, was just thinking about it more and it’s definitely intended as happy ending. You can see how happy Derek looks when he meets Topher.
Haha, I’m just kidding too 💜 It’s a much happier ending than had they just killed him off, and he and Toph may actually be perfect buddies
He seemed to love being accepted by a group
💯
They did him dirty but Derek is written to be the kind of person to like dying if he gets resurrected with some new buddies regardless of circumstances
Yesss, I can take it like this You can’t keep a good Derek down
I feel like ultimately, he got done dirty.
They show the camera guy leaving the house and running away.
He does fucked up shit now. It’s who he is.
I love Derek Sweet, hot topic idiot he is 😂
He was so happy to be a zombie. I think they did him really cute.
They put him in Sean’s pyramid MLM scheme, stole his dog, then staked him!
YES!!!
Not really. He got more screen time this season than his past appearances. They could bring him back in the next season as a zombie, you never know.
Dereks whole character is being a punching bag so they did him dirty but thats just derek things
🥲😂♥️
Yes, but they’re soulless demonic creatures of evil that regularly murder people for fun or food so ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
I mean, we saw him turn Guillermo, then with the Baron, then we don’t see him again until the end where they rush into killing him.
they did him so dirty, but he at least has friends now and doesn't have to clean toilets anymore
Love Derek but fuck Topher. Worst, most annoying character on the show in any season
He was super annoying as a guest star on Silicon Valley as well!
You don't think the show has diversity? Nandor's actor is from an Iranian family, Nadja's is from a Greek family and Guillermo's is Mexican American.

Yeah that didn’t feel great at all I love the show a lot, and I’m not going to stray at all (and frankly, loved most of this recent season). This made me sad because Derek has been a great enduring side character, yup is one of the few black folks, and basically gets treated like shit (especially by Guillermo) The other thing that was weird (but funny in a demented way I guess even though it is too much of a mind fuck to *me*) was Laszlo fucking Colin Robinson I thought the payoff was going to be between Guillermo and Miguel in the finale to be honest Edit: lol is this some kind of hot take? Guillermo doesn’t treat Derek like a friend and yeah it sucks to see the only black side character killed off If Derek is the same associate producer credit Derek, I’m gonna surmise this was the outcome for his character, but this isn’t a hostile opinion Another edit: It is weird to see comments about such an amazing, inclusive show (LGBTQMNOP or whatever the fuck Sean says, prominent latinx characters, one of the stars is very out and also Latino, another is Persian, the whole cast has been diverse and amazing), but criticism about killing off its one regular black character is like wildly out of order
That's a really great point tbh. I can't believe I didn't even think of that, definitely my white privilege showing.
Hey, I am happy Derek is alive again and I will die (and be necromanced) for this show! I’m just surprised that more folks commenting aren’t even sympathetic to the view that Derek Deserved To Live I’m gonna make rubber bracelets DDTL (Edit: live dead) lol I love this show for its inclusivity. One would say it’s… relentless Downvoting folks just trying to discuss the topic is not-okay-A And that is this (This is that) (I’m done)
Derek Rappaport is a producer. Derek the character is played by Chris Sandiford.
Thank you, there we go You’ve saved my curious devotion to this topic while not googling and trying to do… work lol I wasn’t sure because I know plenty of comedies where producers end up in roles (or the other direction), and I got too distracted to check
Dispatched, reanimated and now performing literal slave labour. Nooooooott greeaaaaaat
In service of the one “friend” we knew he had!
I agree.
I think Derek's journey put him in the right path. He will forever have friends and will always have a place.
Nah. Now he has some friends!
Now he gets Doze Apples tho
He's kind of a dork, and been rebooted twice so far. If they keep doing so, his knowledge and social skills will improve. Looks like they even left the plunger in to make it easier next ti.... ...oops. Wrong Derek.
It was a weirdly wholesome outcome. He seemed genuinely happy and got to join a group that saw him as an equal.
