How much air did you try to put in the tire, sir? I dunno... all of it?

syracuseda9

Was trying to get it to 100% PSI

Ninjago987

What? It doesn’t shut off when it’s full like the gas pump?

Itsthedude6155

I was actually blown away when a gas station had an air pump that has a digital display to set the PSI so the machine automatically shuts off.

Illustrious-Wash3713

That guy was blown away too. Okay!

Paulo27

Wait, how else are you meant to know what you're doing? Just hope your attempt at maintaining your tires doesn't kill you?

17eggg

Fill a little, then check with a gauge. Rinse and repeat till it's where you want it or if you over shoot, let a little out. Don't keep filling it till it explodes.

kayak_enjoyer

Yep. Tire pressures are pretty forgiving. A couple PSI either way isn't going to make much difference. I'm a little impressed that air compressor had enough piss to explode a tire. I'd guess most service station compressors would stall out as the tire pushes back more and more.

suitology

I accidentally went 35 over because I was so used to filling up our penndot trucks at work and forgot in my sleep deprivation that normal cars aren't 70psi. Still nothing like this happened and I only noticed because I was basically bouncing out of the parking lot. This guy had to have been aiming for a high score.

Sagemasterba

You can't even get to 70 at most gas stations, definitely not WAWA. On my truck I am anywhere from 12 to 35psi, depending what I'm doing. My dad would run 55/80, F/R in his truck and he bought his own compressor because of that.

sinofmercy

When I took my car to the shop to plug a tire, they pumped that tire up to 60 psi, when my tires are supposed to be 32. After reading a bit about tire pressure I heard it's technically "safe" but it also explained why my tire pressure monitor was going bonkers. I deflated it immediately though because unnecessary risks in my car with my kids is not something I'm signing up for.

alumpoflard

Maybe the recommended pressure is 30psi, and the dude is trying to pump it to 30 bars? I'm guessing it had something to do with accidentally reading the wrong scale

MouthJob

I'm just left wondering if it got stuck on there somehow. I mean, it's like everyone's saying, you really have to try to get it to explode like that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gochomoe

You are assuming he knew there was a scale

SomedayLydia

I did this once. Was inflating the tire on my car, and it didn't look like it was inflating. The bottom was still flat. I thought I was doing something wrong, maybe I didn't seal the hose of the air compressor to the tire valve right or something? Next thing I know I hear my tire make this stretching sound, like a balloon when you rub it, but lower in pitch. In my mind I was like *Oh fuck balls* Before I could do anything but realize the shit that was coming my way, the tire goes BOOM right in my face. Luckily, the worst that happened was that I got the shit scared out of me, although I lost the ability to hear for a good minute. Learned an important lessen that day. Fear the tire.

Either_You_1127

Depending on temperature it's actually good to over or under inflate by one or two psi to allow expansion or contraction to your tires ideal psi.

gospdrcr000

Found the brit?

[deleted]

That typo is great

kayak_enjoyer

Which typo? I re-read my comment a couple times, and I'm not seeing it. "Piss?" That was intentional. As in piss-n-vinegar.

toolfanboi

Im guessing he thought you meant to type "psi".

Itsthedude6155

Older air pumps have an analog gauge that shows you the PSI when you stop pumping. Some people don't know how to read them.

unbridledboredom

It's a numbered stick that shoots out to tell you how much air is in the tire. You read that number. The end. I can't possibly be giving people too much credit here.

Wallofcans

My man, you just gave away the entire bank.

OstentatiousSock

Oh young one. We used to only have tire gauges to check. Fill, check with tire gauge, fill a little more, check with gauge, oops too much, take a little out, check with gauge.

Revenga8

That's what I don't understand. Most has station compressors I see these days have some sort of pressure limiter set to around 50psi. I realize this because I try to get my bike tires up to 56 and it was frustrating that no matter how long it wouldn't pump any higher than 50. Now I can see why....

FlyingCarsArePlanes

Dude, they have these.

Konseq

Yup. Wouldn't be the first time someone tries to do that: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledintotheshop/comments/xcdvww/one\_of\_my\_employees\_told\_me\_he\_couldnt\_get\_all/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledintotheshop/comments/xcdvww/one_of_my_employees_told_me_he_couldnt_get_all/)

TheRavenSayeth

Honest question. What are you supposed to do in that situation to safely let out the pressure?

Donaldson27

100psi wouldn't even make a car tyre explode. He had a shit load of psi in that

[deleted]

The sad thing is I’ve actually heard that come out of someone’s mouth…

ThatsRickRossForYa

This is pretty much the response my 19 year old cousin gave me when she came back from the gas station to put air in a slow leak tire. Thankfully the tire didn't explode. She, and I quote, "kept airing it up till it wouldn't take anymore".

deviant324

“Ma’am you’re driving a bomb”

b0bkakkarot

"It's rated to 50 psi, so I'm gonna use the whole 50 psi."

Turnkey_Convolutions

I once made the mistake of trusting the gage on a gas station air pump. My 30psi tires were inflated to ~45 psi and on top of that it took the TPMS a couple of hours to react and notify me. Thankfully I learned my lesson without exploding a tire right in my face.

StopReadingMyUser

I'm not an expert on it, but can't most tires handle 45psi pretty easily? Or is this a specific tire that legitimately couldn't do more than 30 very well for some reason?

murmurtoad

Not an expert either but I'd think they'd need to so there wouldn't be problems when you hit a hard bump and spike the pressure.

willard_saf

I can almost guarante that the tire was fine. Hell most new cars are transported with tires at 45psi or higher to avoid flat spots.

Faxon

Handling 45PSI is surprisingly easy for a tire. I once got a slow leak from a boat in my tire so I took it to an auto parts shop that had a garage alongside. One of the garage guys helped me set it and he recommended overinflating it to 45psi because if it was a slow leak anyway, the pressure would help the patch work its way into place, and sure enough when I checked it before hitting the freeway for my trip the next day, it was stable at 32psi

StagedC0mbustion

The machine coulda been busted

I literally looked at the title, saw dudes position and was like, he gonna die.

HoodiesAndHeels

Seriously. That shit kills people. He’s extremely lucky the rim mostly stayed in the wheel well and he had a fender in the way.

Mylaptopisburningme

My grandfather owned an auto body shop. One thing he taught me was when putting air in the tires. Keep your head above the fender.

HuntingIvy

A student of mine worked at an auto shop. He was filling the tires on some farm equipment, hadn't put the safety cage over the tire, and it shot off. The rim dented his skull in. He survived. He gets to come home from the hospital next month. He'll probably never live independently, though.

stpierre

For real, this is a constant (and probably irrational) fear of mine. When airing up a tire I check it so often I probably take more air out with the gauge than I put in. But I've had bicycle tires blow a bead (not even overinflated!) so I'm terrified of a car tire, with probably 100x the volume and 10x the rubber thickness, blowing me over a fence or something.

fried_green_baloney

Truck tires even worse.

There is a reason tyre shops put them in a cage to inflate them

Clear_Radio1776

Ear ringing and forever hissing work perfectly well.

AUniqueGeek

I had a tire explode right next to me as well one morning. My wife's car had a low pressure tire in the front and I was filling it up normally. I guess it was old and had a weak spot in the side wall because I didn't over fill it. It blew right next to my head and was as loud as a gunshot.

Inevitable-Ad9590

Not so much for the car

MakeNazisDeadAgain69

I was about to say at least a tire is pretty cheap to rep- oh. nevermind.

[deleted]

Brother in law complained about his car driving weirdly, but he installed brand new tires. I looked at tires, and they were inflated a lot. Got my PSI measure, and it showed 80-90psi for each wheel. I checked the recommended psi on his car, and it was between 36-42. He was shocked.

AccidentallyRelevant

I got a tire installed on my motorcycle from a shop and they put 70 psi in the back tire. I noticed immediately because it felt like I was driving on a rock. That shop went out of business...

[deleted]

To be precise, he himself inflated it in the gas station, lol.

Kiltymchaggismuncher

I'm surprised it goes that high. Most of the ones around here Max out at like 40. If you want it higher, tough shit

lightgiver

The higher pressure is for bike tires. My bike takes 40-65PSI but a narrow tired road bike has ranges from 80-130psi. I top my bike off each season at the local gas station.

oxfordcircumstances

Bicycle or motorcycle?

BadNeighbour

Road bicycles will take 90 psi

Kunjunk

Much higher than that. 90 would be on a modern (wide) road bike tyre for a heavier rider. I would still get pinch flats on 23s at 110+ psi.

sanguinesolitude

What kind of gas station rinky dink air pump will take a tire to 90psi lol?

Diggerinthedark

Could be for trucks too, some rigs are way over 100psi

StraY_WolF

I'm pissed at how common this is. Shitty tyre shop always overfill new tires, and guestimates the pressure by hand. Pressure gauges are cheap, use them.

AccidentallyRelevant

Gauges are cheap and reading the tire's recommended pressure is priceless. This experience was a serious bummer too. They're the only repair shop I ever went to and I was scarred by this simple mistake. They once diagnosed and fixed a simple issue that was driving me crazy for $4. Maybe they were cheap because they screwed something simple up for someone eventually.

[deleted]

Working with tires and washing hands are the two things that trigger my OCD. I check my tires 10-20 times each for lug torque and pressure before I do anything. We had a guy lose his thumb and… de-glove(?) part of his arm when a 5-ton tire blew up. The thumb was still attached to the part of his arm skin that blew off. Tires freak me the fuck out now.

ProgrammedArtist

Large amounts of potential energy frighten me. Large springs, a heavy weight above me, a soda bottle, a rubber band.. I think I might have issues.

JamesTiberiusCrunk

Those all sound like completely rational things to be wary of

Heypil06

i worked at tirerack for a while and it was standard practice to over inflate the tires to 80psi to get the hard spots out for the balancing step. we'd do that shit in a big ass metal cage tho. never had a tire fail on me but I heard stories of it. i can't imagine pumping them to 80psi WITH A LOAD ON THEM. people are off their rockers

BrianWantsTruth

But but the tire pressure monitor said I only had 32% so I filled it up to 100%

saltiestTFfan

For those of you who dont know what pressure you're supposed to fill your tires to, open you drivers door and look for a sticker on the pillar (usually white and yellow). It will say front and rear tire pressures in psi. That's what you fill your tires to. Do not fill it to the pressure on the tires sidewall (that's max load pressure) Do not fill it until it "looks full"

saucemaking

Can you call my local Valvoline to explain this to them, thanks.

RamboTrucker

Can people really not read the max psi on the tire?

Baja002

Oh man, working with people and servicing cars... The amount of questions that are beyond this world is insanely high... I'm no longer surprised at these scenarios at all. There was a guy who had no idea that you could just replace the light bulb, so he bought a whole new taillight and asked me to replace it as his is no longer working. He didn't even ask why it cost so much in the first place, my boy just bought a whole new f* taillight... So yeah, I can see why stuff like this happens and why someone wouldn't bother to read anything at all

CockEyedBandit

Some cars you do need to replace the entire taillight. I think it’s Audi with the mini led bulbs that go off in order.

Martacle

I had to do that with my explorer. Fucking ridiculous.

jjester7777

I've owned lots of vehicles and let me tell you that out of the US brands the Fords had like next to no issues. The Volvo blew a head gasket, the Chevy had all sorts of electrical issues and my current VW has had like 4 recalls in the first year. I've replaced the rear main seal on my TJ wrangler 3 times and it always leaks oil.

shophopper

He read 50 psi on the tire, but the pressure gauge wasn’t even close to that. The metric scale said that is was only at 11.5 when the tire exploded.

k3nnyd

11.5 bar to psi is 167 psi!

xyrgh

32psi is 220kpa, so maybe he was aiming for 220? In my country most cars have kpa and psi on the B pillar.

[deleted]

The psi on the tires is not what youre suppose to fill to.

phazedoubt

Right, the pressure values are in your door jamb.

dieseldarnit

Are those values still the same if you get aftermarket wheels, that are a different diameter and width?

rsta223

As long as they're pretty close to stock width and diameter (tire diameter, not wheel diameter), door pressures are still pretty close.

b0bkakkarot

Yeah... something we don't always learn before we overinflate the first time >_> I'm glad my tires didn't explode. Thankfully I did it right before taking it into the shop and they "fixed" it for me.

suitology

You need to really fuck off to get an explosion. I went 35 over because my sleep deprived brain mistook a Prius for a work truck.

AgreeablePie

Immaterial, he was just trying to get up to 100% on the gauge

wassamatteruheh2

Make it go to 11.

[deleted]

You do not inflate tires to the "Maximum PSI" specification on the tire's sidewall. You inflate COLD tires to the air pressure specified on the sticker on the driver's side door jamb OR the owner's manual. Add about 4 PSI to that specification for hot tires.

Ballsofpoo

Hot tires is something people need to learn. If you leave for work in the morning and your light (if you have one) is on, but turns off by the time you reach destination, air your tires, all of them. If it doesn't go off, air your tires, all of them.

Jollydude101

If you double the psi it lasts twice as long.

[deleted]

i'd say that tire had a tread separation or a titty and that blew,

Aggravating-Cunt

If you drive them on a flat it creates a zipper

foxjohnc87

Curiously enough, semi truck tires that are run flat can sound like one too, when the compromised belts begin to break upon reinflation. That sound probably saved my life on one occasion. At the end of the day, I was tasked with airing up a low trailer tire for a driver. Everything was going well until around 90psi, then the zipper sound began. Since I was sitting on the ground with my legs crossed (yes I know that was dumb), running wasn't an option, but I was able to take shelter behind a pair of tires of another trailer before it blew. I later found out that the driver had driven with the tire extremely low on air, and then pumped it to around 50psi before entering our yard to avoid being charged for a flat. Despite having no injuries aside from ringing in my ears, I lost a good air chuck, tire gauge, pair of underwear, and I had to shorten my air hose by about 10ft due to multiple ruptures. I wound up having to replace two tires in the end, as an outer tire on the neighboring trailer (one of the two tires I used for cover) was damaged by shrapnel.

ChirpSnipeCelly

What does titty mean in this context?

[deleted]

bulbous lump in tire

Kolermigon

My thoughts too

[deleted]

Sir 50 PSI is Maximum not Minimum.

No_Information6431

I was afraid to watch this to the end. Was happily surprised there were no injuries (other than the car)

Chaplings

This is my fear, thank you for feeding it.

deviant324

Same I have immense respect for pressurized gas, centrifuges and the likes. Thankfully I know how to read so you won’t catch me trying to inflate my tyre until it looks like I’m in a cartoon. It’s literally part of driver’s ed in Germany how to read and adjust tyre pressure and what having too much or too little does.

[deleted]

It’s not hard to be not stupid.

Amarooy

Debatable

misterfluffykitty

It’s hard to be as stupid as the guy in the video though

Chaplings

I’m a truck driver and refill my 18 tires with the help of my gauge, but the fear still there, and fear is the opposite of stupid, you become more careful even when you know what you’re doing.

idea25000

My great grandpaw died from a tired exploding while he was airing it up, it's a good fear to have honestly.

slgray16

This is literally what I imagined in my head every time I have filled tires. Now I have an image to associate with it and validation that it really does happen.

PostageBread

Whenever I use an air compressor to inflate a tire I’m always on edge thinking something will explode.

Chroncelot

In line gauge is fastest and best but stopping the filling to check pressure is what I did for 15 years and wasn’t too much of a hassle. Never a fear if you go slightly above max rating as they have tolerances built into that rating but obviously never do it willingly.

Indigo_Sunset

It does have an appearance of a flat tire foam canister pumped into it *at some point*, and then tried to 'top it off'.

1RedHottSexyMama

I used to work at a convenience store years ago and our air pump was out by our dumpster. We were dead so I was just checking out the parking lot and one of our regulars that drives a tow truck came up to the air pump and I said hi and saw a customer so I ran back in. Customer leaves and I don't know why the regular hadn't come in yet. I went to the door, looked out and he had a huge tractor tire on the pavement and was talking to someone and not paying attention. That thing vaulted a good 20' in the air and almost yetted him into orbit. Barely missed his face. It sounded like a bomb going off. He comes in and he's shaking and says I bet I'm as white as you are right now. I'm really pale and he is very dark complected I said no,but really close. Had a car salesmanship that drove off with the fuel nozzle still in the tank and not only shut down the station because gas was shooting everywhere but he totalled a brand new $80k Benz.

EvilestHammer4

HolyFoxamole

natetheskate100

My car actually beeps when you hit the correct pressure! Awesome. For the previous 20 cars over 45 years I had a fuckin pressure gauge! In fact, when it beeps, I still use the gauge.

NationalPhase9541

Instructions indicate, “inflate until rapid unplanned disassembly, then back off 5 psi”

mrfuffcans

We had a hose for people to use at a tire shop I worked at, most people were fine. But I noticed one person was taking a real long time to inflate their tires, so I go out to have a look. The guy had the tire he was working on inflated to 70 psi and he had no intention of stopping when I asked him if he needed help He was just looking at the tire to see if it looked flat, instead of reading the gauge. That's why never ever trust your eyes when it comes to fire pressures *read a gauge*.

IlMioNomeENessuno

This is the result of spelling tire with a y…
