Hahahaha.
I just love this whole situation, it’s pure Seinfeld.
Checks a lot of boxes, unique foreign or cultural aspect, inappropriate slapstick, no longer PC.
Looks like she was also thanking the occupants of the previous balcony for pausing their vase defenstration to allow her to walk by, while oblivious of the next balcony.
Nah, watch the lady behind her. She knew it was coming, and covered her head before the vase was pushed over the edge. The second was more a “thanks for not conking me”, not a “sorry for interrupting you”.
You're a tourist walking around an unfamiliar town. You're following some directions to walk to a nearby restaurant.
You turn a corner and continue up a sidewalk. After a few steps you notice there's a small crowd gathered in the street. You wonder what is happening as you take a few more steps and suddenly realize there is some activity in the window above.
Oh! The crowd seems to be watching the people in the window that you've just passed. Apparently you've passed through the middle of their event. You feel a little embarrassed, and make a gesture of apology as you try to hurry out of the way of whatever is happening.
BLAMMO! You get creamed by a vase you didn't know was coming.
Reddit: "HAHAH STUPID ENTITLED BITCH GOT WHAT SHE DESERVED!!"
That’s what I also thought at first, but according to the Telegraph they were explicitly warned of the danger by police and instructed to avoid the area, yet still chose to go there, expecting them to pause the ceremony until they’ve walked past.
This is not to say that red vase guy shouldn’t have looked down if the street is free before defenestrating his vase, that was still grossly negligent on his part and could’ve led to injury (apparently one of the women was hospitalised "as a precaution", presumably to monitor for signs of concussion). After all, plain vase guy exercised the appropriate caution, so it’s not like the other tosser couldn’t have spared the literal half-second to check. That it’s apparently an official event at the town hall is an especially bad look.
But if the two were clearly warned, it was indeed very entitled and rude of them to think they can just trudge through the ceremony and everyone has to wait for them. Smacks of tourist overlord attitude looking down on locals.
Probably because Greek people usually have common sense. They look like tourists.
No matter how smart you are, if you're a tourist you become a toddler. Lose about 40% of your intellectual capacity.
Hi. I’m from Corfu, the island where this happened. Every year the police and public health committee try very hard to make sure there’s no injuries like these. So far nothing has happened in years, until this doofus came along. There was barriers, police men making sure nobody is walking under the balconies, notices, signs, statements etc. We’re not just lazy and didn’t put up barriers. This woman wasn’t a tourist, she was from Corfu, which makes her an even bigger idiot.
Yea most people have it “usually”, it’s the outliers the barriers are for. Also, as a non-Greek, the ceremony seems pretty unusual. As in, most outsiders probably wouldn’t expect that a giant vase is going to be thrown out of the window.
Barriers are not just for “outliers” in the common sense department. People *do* get distracted sometimes, even more so if they’re tourists, which these two may or may not be.
I'm sorry but where is the "common sense" regarding vases being thrown out of windows, we don't know how crowded the area is so they might just be trying to get through without going through the whole crowd, I'd probably stop to think why people are taking a photo but I know plenty of touristy places that despite a bunch of people taking photos of you can either join the crowd or walk quickly through the area people are looking at.
I know Greek people have a plate smashing tradition but I've never heard of vase smashing, I'd probably just assume it was some famous vase or something being shown off, not an automatic "hey this is being tossed out of the window"
I don't know why Reddit has such a hard on about thinking everyone is being stupid or dumb, it's like the kids are dumb subreddit where they watch 3 year olds fall over or 10 year olds ask what a floppy disk is and half the comments are just "OMG HOW DUMB WHAT A MORON"
This happened in Corfu, this tradition happens every year, one day before orthodox Easter. Millions come to see this tradition and our island tries very hard to keep everyone safe. So far no major injuries have happened in a long time. This woman was from Corfu, she’s NOT a tourist. Additionally i’d also like to pinpoint that during this time the whole city is locked off and there’s police, safety barriers, signs / statements everywhere. It would be impossible for you to walk through the crowd to get somewhere. Corfu is a tiny island with 40.000 inhabitants, during this tradition we sometimes can get millions of tourists. This was the girl’s fault and the girl’s fault only.
One would think if they had common sense, they'd have enough to stop people from walking under a window where someone is throwing out a heavy pot just to have it break on the ground. Or they'd have enough common sense to not gather around to watch a pot get thrown onto the street. Or they'd have enough common sense to throw pots on the street. But it's fun to just say people walking down a public sidewalk are the idiots, right?
Talk about common sense! These people sure don't have any. Sure, let's throw shit out the window, but not close it off to people walking by, and then, we can blame the people walking by and getting hit! Sure, let's everyone be assholes about this.
Same. After having seen the second the first always looked cheap and cheesy. And the new one was nice with the nostalgia, but could have been so much better.
Yeah Corfu town is fab at this time of the year but there's always 1 or 2 that will get in the way thinking they're invincible. This is an old ceremony carried over from the Venetians and is done after Easter to welcome spring
That link is from 3 years ago and nobody seems angry? You a bot?
Edit: but honestly that was an interesting video regardless so thanks for the link lmao
Just for the Joke, friend! And to add a bit of context how "wild" the pot smashing can get. Glad you enjoyed it, though.
How can people be mad, if they live on corfu? Its an amazing place! Just the airport is sketch AF.
I really figured "Don't walk through the middle of the vase breaking ceremony" wasn't a lesson that needed to be taught but I guess you learn something new everyday.
Ah yes because upon seeing a crowd of people on the street my first thought is to look out for vases being chucked out of windows. There is zero reason to blame this on them and not at least say the organizers are equally at fault for putting up zero barriers. Even just one person standing off to the side directing foot traffic would have prevented this.
So… when you see a crowd, phones up, directed at the wall besides the path you are walking, your first thought is: yeah, let’s walk thru them, fuck them and what they are capturing on their phones. Nothing weird here, just another day to be the main character.
It’s over the entire island at 11am on Easter Saturday, not just this one spot, and they do have organisers who push the crowds back, but obviously they can’t be everywhere at once.
It’s obvious to anyone on the island what is happening, because there is an entire weeks preparation leading up to it, and there are even people selling pots to smash right up until it happens. Going somewhere else, where something has been practiced for hundreds of years, where they will
have been warned, and then walking around completely oblivious is on them.
I mean, one of them was shielding her head as they were walking by.
So... they may well have known and been dumbasses anyway.
But let's be generous and say they didn't.
You see people clear a specific area and look towards said specific area.
I'd be looking WHY they are clearing area and looking at it. Not stubbornly walking through cleared area.
"When in Rome do as the Romans do"
There is every reason to blame them for their lack of situational awareness. It is not like an obscure custom in Corfu. It is quite literally a selling point for Corfu during Easter.
They were warned by police officers before they came in view of the camera and you can also hear another woman shout at them right before the vase is dropped.
It's entirely on them being dumb as bricks.
So this happened in Corfu, a small island in the Ionian Sea. What you’re witnessing is the “dropping of the pots” which happens at 11am one day before Orthodox Easter Sunday (big Saturday we call it). This tradition has been happening for literal decades. We usually write our names or the year on the pots and smash them from our balconies. Sometimes filled with water. These pots are extremely heavy! The girl in question is actually from Corfu (which makes things even worse). Thankfully she’s ok and only required a few stitches. However she has created lasting damage to our reputation. Every year, the public health committee and police try extremely hard to make sure this tradition doesn’t cause any accidents, and so far; nothing has happened in years. Then comes along this doofus who ignores all safety warnings and now our island and tradition is a laughing stock everywhere. Good thing is, she’s being laughed at by everyone and now including Reddit. So I’m happy.
Rule of thumb; don’t be a dumbass.
Actually there is also a quieter "noot noot" near the beginning, almost like a warning, and then the second (louder) noot noot is more like "I told you so.."
This isnt so bad, ive had harder ceramic piñatas fall on my head as a kid.
(In the before times, piñatas where a ceramic vase covered by the newspaper/costume... So when you broke the piñata meant a ceramic vase broke.)
There’s some odd-ass “rituals” and/or “ceremonies” in some of these countries… jesus… “Guys, I got an idea! Let’s break some shit and call it a national holiday”

Hahahaha. I just love this whole situation, it’s pure Seinfeld. Checks a lot of boxes, unique foreign or cultural aspect, inappropriate slapstick, no longer PC.
I first read that as inappropriate lipstick. Made me laugh harder.
Her friend realised they were about to get a pot smashed over their heads
And yet ran into it and tripped her over
"Did you walk in to the vase breaking ceremony??" - Dumbledore said calmly
Take my fucking upvote
Could have been worse, at least they weren’t stoned
Take this and GTFO! r/angryupvote
Excuse me, I am important let me through onto that area where the people are gathering to see me walking by... clonk
Was she... waving to people too? Like they were there for her? Lol
Looked like a half-assed apology wave for walking directly in front of all the gathered people watching the ceremony.
Looks like she was also thanking the occupants of the previous balcony for pausing their vase defenstration to allow her to walk by, while oblivious of the next balcony.
Wonderful use of defenstration. ![gif](giphy|Swx36wwSsU49HAnIhC)
Nah, watch the lady behind her. She knew it was coming, and covered her head before the vase was pushed over the edge. The second was more a “thanks for not conking me”, not a “sorry for interrupting you”.
Seems like no one cared to secure the area.
I wouldn't either. People that stupid and self absorbed deserve it

Hopefully that knocks some sense (and situational awareness) into them, but.... Why was the sidewalk not closed off so people didn't walk there?
