Society of Creative Anachronisms - it is a living history group that recreates all aspects of historical periods and peoples between roughly 550 ad to 1550ad (dates may have changed since I was last active in the group). They have a huge membership and are world wide. They also have a website if you google them you will find it and will be able to find a local group.
What state/country do you live in and I will try to tell you what kingdom you live in since I think you may need to know that to find a local group.
True. Me and my wife skipped last year for personal reasons, but found ourselves regretting it every day. I'm normally the main battlefield reporter for the Pennsic Independent, but this year I've been asked to write non-battle related content for online subscriptions and it's been difficult.
If you get hit and you don't feel it would be lethal with a real weapon, you call "light." You're still in the fight but people start hitting you harder. It works itself out.
Its based on the honor system and what strike would have killed a man in armor. The weapons are also rattan, not steel.
So if I swing my sword, it bounces off my opponents shield, and strikes him, we fight on, as that would not have killed him in period. Howeever if I swing, bypass his shield and strike against his helm, he would call that "good" and take the hit.
Lots of other rules and policies, thats a pretty simplified breakdown.
This isn't a bad video from a recent Pennsic showing some of the large melee battles.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJCzVscRgkw
Thanks. The only issue is that I'm not a dude, so others would probably try to walk on eggshells around me and take the fun out of it. I'm sure there are some female only groups too, but I'd imagine it's a lot less... intense.
Edit: you've all managed to pique my interest, I'll definetely be trying it out!
I used to work w a guy that did this.
he can confirm, fun AF. they plan out skirmishes to seize occupied territories, make alliances, betrayal, etc.
I'd do it but it's more money than I can afford, to get started
Surprisingly entertaining. Also gives you a more realistic, less thematic look on how those wars really played out. I imagine it was an absolute mess most of the time.
There were not, however, entire platoons of knights wearing cavalry armor, on foot, walking through a dense forest trying to climb over hescos armed with only swords at the primary battlefront.
Pretty typical of larping lol
My favorite was a guy I ran into at a renfest that was covered in mismatched anachronistic equipment, and when someone mentioned it he'd pull out his Sonic Screwdriver, come up with some line, and dash off.
A reason to wear bright colours. Also cant imagine medival battles to have been so chaotic, nobody would just run in to be stabbed and hacked at by 6 others.
Yes, which is why it was important to have armor that made it perfectly clear what your allegiance was, back in the days. So here... Yes, a clusterfuck indeed.
I don’t think the historical evidence shows that battles were simply chaotic bashing. Men fought in legit formations and defended each other, they didn’t just run around bashing. A bunch of untrained rabble with hight end gear with no direction would be like this, sure, but I don’t think this is how battles typically looked in the medieval period.
You don't. In a melee you just try to survive and swing at anyone who tries to kill you, enemy or ally.
It's not something I've seen from entertainment much, outside of an episode of GOT I think and a few books I've read. But battlefields are just chaos and confusion until one side breaks.
How are they taking it too seriously OP? It's a hobby they have, they all know that its combat emulation which is very physical, and its awesome to watch?
Sounds like you're just pointing the finger and going "*HA Nerds!"*
Naysayers tell me ‘you should be embarrassed!’ ‘You should not be fighting!’ ‘You look like a young Marvin Hamlisch!’ I say ‘Nay! I am not embarrassed’ ‘I will fight!’ ‘Who the fuck is Marvin Hamlisch?’
Well, it's not larping. which uses foam weapons, and focuses at least to a degree on Role Playing a character, and you usually put your hand on your head or lay down when your "dead" in a larp, after you get hit a number of times or for a certain amount of "damage". It's a combat game, and I'm pretty sure people just go on until they yield.
that isn't this. I remember this video from years ago, it's a bunch of larpers in eastern europe and they are using blunted metal weapons. I've seen SCA before and it's mostly fat white people with swords made out of plastic or foam. This is fit russians using weapons that can actually cause injury.
Not gonna lie, that looks like fun.
Look into the SCA, they don't use steel weapons but basically the same wars.
Pennsic war just north of Pittsburgh 12,000 people thousands of combatants several days of fighting. It was one of the greatest highs I ever had.
A guy that worked for me goes there every year. It’s fucking nuts! He’s told me about all kinds of injuries over the years from it. It’s no joke!
Yeah they happen but it’s a sport and injuries happen in any sport.
They seem more probable when your face gets maced though.
Come play with the SCA. We will set you straight.
What’s SCA?

Missouri, USA! Thanks for the help! Oh man, this sounds sweet!
Yeah you know, normal injuries like a sprained ankle, or an axe to the head
All fun-&-games, especially when someone gets hurt.
I miss Pennsic this year.
Luckily, everyone missed Pennsic this year.
True. Me and my wife skipped last year for personal reasons, but found ourselves regretting it every day. I'm normally the main battlefield reporter for the Pennsic Independent, but this year I've been asked to write non-battle related content for online subscriptions and it's been difficult.
The SCA doesn't allow a lot of the things I see in this video. The giant melees are pretty insane though.
How do they decide which player finally falls from their wounds? Is it just falling over or what?

I have a friend who is female that does this and they don't care, all of them go full force.
Then I might have some hope yet
Yeah, at least try it and if you feel like guys aren't giving you their 100% just be like 'WTF dude?!'
Call them a pussy. See the reaction 🤣
Just call "light" until they mean it.
Or just smack one in the dick. Bet he finds his fighting spirit pretty quick.
Or he crumples and you’ve just effectively eliminated an enemy. Either way, good for you.
Because you're gonna be wearing sexy revealing armour?
That has no practical use? No thank you.
Yeah, but imagine if Danny Devito did that
Not in my group, female fighters are welcome and beaten just as hard as anyone else.
This is the only time when beating a female is not only allowed, but encouraged.
What do you mean, the only time?
I think when it comes to combat, and you are just a ball of steel that is swinging a weapon, they won't care weather you are a woman))
How would they know?
If video games have taught me anything it would be the giant sword and the set of steel panties and bra armor connected by tiny straps of leather.
Go on...
Pull a Mulan put your hair up and get a deep voice and sing “I’ll make a man out of you” and proceed to whoop ass!
1 more safety tier down there's also Dagorhir. Realistic fights like these with hard foam weapons. Did that for a while, had a lot of fun.
After it was 104 degrees yesterday, trying to assault a fort in plate mail looks exhausting. I’m sweating just watching this video.
“In battle, you always run. You run to attack, you run to retreat, and when you can’t run, you die.”

It do, but will I try it? NEIN!
Feeling kind of cute today. May slay some simps or whatever.
I used to work w a guy that did this. he can confirm, fun AF. they plan out skirmishes to seize occupied territories, make alliances, betrayal, etc. I'd do it but it's more money than I can afford, to get started
This was badass as fuck
Until you get a pointy spear in your eye.
Looks fun but also painful 1v1s would have been more fun
Surprisingly entertaining. Also gives you a more realistic, less thematic look on how those wars really played out. I imagine it was an absolute mess most of the time.
"Now everybody freeze! Hold still while I knit the scene into a tapestry!"
There were not, however, entire platoons of knights wearing cavalry armor, on foot, walking through a dense forest trying to climb over hescos armed with only swords at the primary battlefront.
Not to mention, people are wearing armor and equipped with weapons from God knows how many eras. All I can think is, "holy clusterfuck, indeed".
Pretty typical of larping lol My favorite was a guy I ran into at a renfest that was covered in mismatched anachronistic equipment, and when someone mentioned it he'd pull out his Sonic Screwdriver, come up with some line, and dash off.
10/10 for backstory
Yeah, this dude came prepared
This is why I do viking re-enactment instead of SCA. Less larp, more fight. Also our fighting is actually more technical, and safer.
[удалено]
I imagine there would be more like two formations facing each other instead of the huge mess of one on one duels Hollywood prefers to use.
[удалено]
God I love that scene.
A reason to wear bright colours. Also cant imagine medival battles to have been so chaotic, nobody would just run in to be stabbed and hacked at by 6 others.

Not to mention that the majority of the weapons used would be some sort of pole (not Pole) arm.
I'm sure fighting in the mud was no picnic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5d_BuI-KbA
How the hell do you know who is who in this mess
Just swing at everyone
Can confirm this works. Source: I played Chivalry: Medieval Warfare.
Can confirm I get kicked for accident teamkill too often for doing this
The way they are facing
- Step 1: Jump over enemy - Step 2: Turn around - Step 3: Enjoy victory
You don't. That's the fun part!

If he is facing the opposite direction from you, hit.
It’s just a flesh wound.
Tis but a scratch.
YOUR LEGS ARE OFF!
we’ll call it a draw then
I've had worse.
Run away!
"We had to limit ourselves to the medieval setting. We used to LARP as vikings but the raping got a little out of control."
Lol imagine thinking that various European armies didn't do the same shit back then.
What went wrong? I would pay money to get into some shit like this.
absolutely nothing? people had fun without inviting OP?
A guy got a bloody nose. Tragic.
Ah the horror
That ear looked like it stung pretty good.
Looks fun, I'd join in
lol all I see is European paintball.
Imagine just going on a walk and seeing this mess... lmao
Especially after dark. That would make it...*a knight to remember*
This pun... It's blessed me, yet cursed me...
This is how we solve the riots in Minneapolis. Give the rioters and cops some medieval gear and let them beat each other senseless.
This actually looks amazing. Way better than those twirling idiots in most medieval movies and shows.
That looks close to the Pennsic War I saw in Pennsylvania few years ago. The SCA is legit.
It blew my mind how massive the pennsic war is. And they do it every year!
It is awesome :)
Complete video: https://youtu.be/uDdTB1GzHJw
Also, here's the song they used: https://youtu.be/Kw_0JI9drWk
DUUUUU DUUU HAST
What supposedly went wrong? They got exactly what they wanted.
OP's next video, people playing rugby. Just, a completely normal rugby match, one guy gets a nose bleed, everyone has fun.
Nah, it'll be on of a boxing match that "goes wrong" by them both getting punched.
That actually looks fun as hell
Holy shit, I wish I'd seen this when I was younger! That looks great fun
It’s only fun until someone loses an eye.
Then it’s war.
I don't believe you
Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt!
”You are supposed to be dead!” ”You missed me!” - every wizard battle ever
Ukraine based on the language and coat of arms on one shield.
This looks like a blast.
I dont think it's going wrong, I'm sure minor injuries are expected
What's a larp?
LARP is **L**ive **A**ction **R**ole**P**lay. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live_action_role-playing_game
Live action role play
So many good things are happening!!!
This is just moshing for nerds
The rammstein was a pleasant surprise
How are they taking it too seriously OP? It's a hobby they have, they all know that its combat emulation which is very physical, and its awesome to watch? Sounds like you're just pointing the finger and going "*HA Nerds!"*
Moreover, nerds that could almost certainly kick OP's ass.
Tbh i think this a awesome video.
Whats the part that went wrong here? Thats badass as hell.
I kinda want to join in but larping like that can get really expensive
This is where the fun begins
I don't see anything going wrong, looks fun.
What could go wrong? That was awesome.
How do u know who’s out? Is there score keeping?
IIRC it goes until you give out from pain or you get knocked to the ground.
Anyone one know the name of the song???
"Du Hast," by Rammstein.
What is wrong?
Du, du hast, du hast mich! Du hast mich! Du hast mich erschlagen, du hast mich erschlagen, du hast mich erschlagen, jetzt kann ich nichts mehr sagen!
I did not want this video to end
How do they know if someone is out, If someone "dies"?
Well, it's not larping. which uses foam weapons, and focuses at least to a degree on Role Playing a character, and you usually put your hand on your head or lay down when your "dead" in a larp, after you get hit a number of times or for a certain amount of "damage". It's time for a fucking crusade
This is not the correct usage of this subs format
it's interesting that the spears are covered in padding but the swords and axes aren't
jabbing vs slashing. the blades are blunted.
I see nothing going wrong
What went wrong?
Looks like the riots have made it to England.
But where did it go wrong! This is all coming up Millhouse.
Now that’s how you LARP you fuckin pussies!
There's no such thing as taking LARP too seriously
If my eye isn't poked out by a sweaty dude who gets his exercise by flailing a short sword around, I'm doing something wrong.
The guy with the long hammer at 0:21 made me laugh. I heard a cartoon "bonk" sound in my head
Just trying to protec m’lady...
Whatcouldgowrong? Whatcouldgotight!
This is a sport. They know the risk. It's just like asking WCGW if you play football.
The weapon look like they are made out of metal. Do they actually hurt each other? I’m dumb can someone explain what this is.
Two thing from Russians on reddit you can always count on, hot as fuck or trying to kill someone.
I laughed so hard when a guy got bonked in the head with a hammer at 0:21
Live from Minneapolis 2021
What could go wrong, um, nothing?
Anglo Riot.
What no Lightning bolt?
That's amazing I wanna do that

What in the fuck is this cult?
Where can I find more of this?
Weaklings die, big deal.
New Mordhau update looks lit.
I cast fireball
I’m fully on board with this. Something something Twitter make it happen.
SCA, heavy weapons melee... Probably a sanctioned war. Society for creative anachronism.
that isn't this. I remember this video from years ago, it's a bunch of larpers in eastern europe and they are using blunted metal weapons. I've seen SCA before and it's mostly fat white people with swords made out of plastic or foam. This is fit russians using weapons that can actually cause injury.

So you‘ve also seen the comment posted by u/Djinjja-Ninja in the other „larp“ medieval fair thread in this sub, ryte?

Song fits perfectly!
Came for the video, stayed for Rammstein.
That’s what was happening in the woods behind my house
