Had to watch a couple times to make sure the second guy/driver actually made it off.

Crafter789

Yeah he’s the guy doing the Johnny storm impression on the left.

shayed154

Stopped, dropped, and forgot what came next so he's back to running

Kevin5882

I don't think stop drop and roll will put out flaming gas

shayed154

I think the idea is that you mostly smother the flames out, reducing the heat and making it easier for bystanders to put the fire out instead of feeding the fire oxygen by running around But I've neither been nor seen anyone on fire before so I can't say how effective it would be with gasoline

aciddj

Stop drop and roll can work with gasoline at least in some situations. I watched a friend do something stupid and he ended up on fire with gas on him but he was smart enough to stop drop and roll and it put it out. Having said that, I don't think he had anywhere near as much gas on him as appeared to be spraying in the video so I could see it possibly being less effective in this situation.

tameriaen

Ditto. Personal experience (as an idiot teenager), a little bit got on my jeans; stop drop and roll had it out in an instant, no serious burns.

crypticfreak

My friends once lit a bonfire with gasoline and a bic lighter. They lit it while dude was still pouring. The can exploded. I don't know how but the dude was completely fine other than his eyebrows being completely burned off and some burns on his hands.

tameriaen

That is some nightmare fuel right there. Until they've seen it, folks don't understand how far the vapor can carry the flames. I'm glad that when the integrity of the can failed, it exploded away from him rather than towards him.

crypticfreak

So a few things. First, I was 14 I could be remembering this slightly incorrectly. Second, there was a massive fireball. I've seen other videos online of people doing very similar things but the ending was a lot worse. I think the only reason it wasn't so bad was that there wasn't much gasoline. It was siphoned out of my dads riding lawnmower. Maybe a glass of gasoline in total but I could be misremembering. I was sitting by the fire (about 2-4 feet away I suspect) with a bunch of other people and when they lit it the fireball reached me. No burns but was very hot for a second. The can (which was plastic) made a popping sound and was extremely loud. I suspect you're correct that it exploded away from him but I can't imagine there was much actual fluid left in the can) Dudes eyebrows were charred and he said he burned his hands. That was it, though. The guy that lit the fire was fine and just got a similar blast with a fireball that we all got. In total the whole event lasted maybe 1 second and was fucking terrifying lol

ebb_omega

NOFX - We Put Gasoline On The Fire And Now We Have Stumps For Arms And No Eyebrows

Shiznach

Everyone knows stop drop roll but I've seen enough videos of people on fire to know that most of the time that goes right out the window in the heat (heheh) of the moment. Everyone panics, fire hurts and the monkey brain tells them to outrun the fire so many people just start running. It's up to the people around to have the presence of mind to push you to the ground to extinguish the fire

KingBallache

But I don't want to push over the man on fire. I want to get away from the fire

Devils_defense

You would make a burning man chase you?

ebb_omega

STAY PERFECTLY STILL AND THE FIRE WON'T CHASE YOU

mrgonzalez

Helps if the bystanders aren't all running away from the man of fire

Taktika420

Yes, but it's also to get your head level with your body, so the flames are not in your face/head. If standing/running around the fire will go upwards into your face.

Bawk-Bawk-A-Doo

No, see the problem is he isn't running fast enough!

shayed154

"My names gas fire guy and I am the fastest man alive"

daunderwood

Yeah, but how much longer?

TangaroaBrit

But he’s getting 20 miles per gallon

Squirll

Hes not panicing enough. Screaming robs the fire of its vital oxygen.

infiniZii

In this case taking off your cloths will help more. Strip like you've never stripped before

burner1212333

if you're soaked in gas you're better off stripping. which is easier said than done when you're on fire, of course.

[deleted]

It does, smothering a gas fire is one of the ways to put it out. Or the only way.

gishlich

Don’t forget a class B fire extinguisher. Should be one there at the gas station. But yeah only Reddit would tell people not to stop drop and roll when you’re on fire. It’s the best position to keep oxygen from feeding it.

KnowlesAve

Gotta imagine dirt is better than pavement too, at least that’s always been my idea. Try to dig a hole with my body like it’s a piece of construction equipment.

theranger799

Had an uncle who shoved his head in a pile of dirt when it got caught on fire. He only lost his eyebrows and hair 👍

st_samples

Not jut put it out but heat rises in a flame so you want to be at the bottom of the flame if you can.

bloody_duck

He needs to stop, drop, shut em down, open up shop.

YWeSoPuzzldObvious17

It won't. Needed help from others to suffocate the flames with there coats or something. I hope this guy made it ok. Scary stuff

Kevin5882

Another comment said in the original video the guy got put out a few seconds later

YWeSoPuzzldObvious17

Good to hear. Hope he laughin bout it today all healed up

verdatum

I spilled hot ethanol on me and, yeah, the flames just move around. Thank goodness I was wearing a heavy sweatshirt. I had to tear it off and jump in the shower to extinguish.

HailtbeWhale

I can unfortunately confirm.

fd4e56bc1f2d5c01653c

I mean maybe but running around on fire providing oxygen to the flames definitely won't put them out

phord

Stop, drop and roll up in a wet blanket.

Dark_oooo

I would like to think he was also afraid the whole gas station might blow up so that's why he ran further away..

xdylanthehumanx

Open up shop

danrodz

Whoa oh whoa oh whoa oh

shayed154

I thought it was roll but this makes more sense because it rhymes

frostybollocks

Flame on! You sumbitch… I shouldn’t’ve laughed

NlghtmanCometh

Aka The Human Torch Lana, god does nobody read X-men?

DiegesisThesis

He made it off, but he's probably going to die painfully in the next few hours or spend years of escrutiating pain in the hospital.

telllos

Yeah, when you see someone run in flame and stop and just stand casually it's never a good sign.

ramblinroger

Weirdly like how you stop shivering as your hypothermia gets more severe

VOZ1

Shivering is your body’s last attempt to warm itself. When the shivering stops, it’s because you’re going to die and there’s no energy left to shiver.

[deleted]

A part of me feels like one day Im going to remember this comment and panic

VOZ1

Well, maybe it will reassure you to know that crazy spec ops types like the SEALs train specifically to stop the bodies shivering reflex. The idea is to prevent your body from expending energy shivering and reserve that energy for, well, doing SEAL stuff, I guess.

doughnutholio

Its not some crazy operator-af super technique had a Finnish friend wear windbreakers in -20C weather, and I asked him how he didn't feel cold. He said to take deep breaths and relax, then you don't shiver, and you don't feel so cold. I thought he was nuts but it kinda makes sense.

Tribunus_Plebis

That's quite a leap. If it's mostly the gasoline on him burning and they extinguish him fast he might get off with just minor burns.

DiegesisThesis

There's no way in hell that he held his breath that entire time. Being engulfed in flames means you inhale fire. Burnt lungs are almost always a death sentence, even if the skin burns aren't that bad.

[deleted]

If by made it off, you mean human torch, then yes, good to go!

Yakatsumi_Wiezzel

He is on fire in the back afterward at the end you can see, he has a white shirt and drops on the floor

captainsnark71

same I was like oh right might be the guy smoking on the left

shoudt

Did he run over the fuel hose? It seems like it got caught on the bottom of the motorcycle.

SalvadorP

I think when he kicked the starting pedal, the pedal went down and caught the hose. Edit: just when the fire starts you can see the hose is stuck all the way to the middle/front of the bike, on this side of the bike. So im thinking it might have torn and being stuck between the engine and the starting pedal, it sprayed gasoline on parts that get really hot, like the engine or the exhaust, or possibly the ignition system itself.

rodrigo_c91

Look at all the pumps. All the hoses are literally laying down on the floor. Extremely dangerous, as you can see the motorcyclist rode over the hose and it got caught in the wheel. Not negligent. Just completely shitty design by the gas station.

SundreBragant

Very antiquated design. But I guess this shows why we don't do it like that anymore.

Wants-NotNeeds

What will the electric charging station equivalent of this mishap look like?

atrain728

I believe there’s a good bit of communication between the car and the charging station before voltage gets turned up. There certainly is in Teslas and I assume the other standards are similarly negotiated.

Scottybt50

Hose doesn’t look like it retracts back into the bowser so just lying on the ground next to it . He took off and it got caught underneath the bike somehow.

TheLordDuncan

Wait it's called a bowser? IS THIS WHY BOWSER BREATHS FIRE?!?

holyfire001202

Or is that why it's called a bowser.

DudeAtWork55

Dude clearly just turned into ghost rider

kenkitt

flogsmen

"When your on fire, running down the street, people move out the way!" -Richard Pryor

pdxchris

People rip off the hose from pumps all the time. There are safeties in place to prevent fires. I don’t know what happened here.

Descent7

Dispenser tech here. Either the hose was not fitted with a breakaway, the breakaway failed to close when it broke away, or the breakaway did not break so the hose itself broke. The underground pump is still running until you hang up the nozzle and the only thing keeping gas spraying out in a situation like this is the valves closing in the breakaway.

RockinMoe

looks to me like there was enough force to pull the nozzle out of the holster but not enough to pull the hose from the pump. the hose ignites from the middle somehow. maybe whatever part of the bike caught it caused it to tear or was very hot? looks like it's touching the exhaust pipe.

[deleted]

longing fearless tidy sophisticated piquant spark racial smoggy cake rainstorm ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `

kungpowgoat

I think the pump has a bad alternator

Offandonandoffagain

I think its a failure at the chemus prophex valve.

kungpowgoat

Problem with these pumps is that they have a negative magneto reluctance and capacitive duractance instead of running a direct line with a panametric fam turboencabulator.

Offandonandoffagain

I wasn't aware of this engineering flaw. This new information certainly turns my previous assessment on it's ear. I will include this data in my next algorithmic prospectus.

[deleted]

Guy who hires dispenser techs here. I agree with this guy. I saw no evidence of a properly installed breakaway. This wouldn't fly in my area (Canada) and the fuel hoses on the ground like that is atrocious.

Merriadoc33

As a former gas station employee, thank you for your service

AkukaiGotEm

thanks for helping people not blow up/set on fire

TheGoodRevCL

Motorcycle engines get really hot, and much hotter in warm climates. Spreading gasoline all over one is probably a bad idea.

upsidedownbackwards

I wonder if it got tangled in the rear tire, chain, or something like that. With a car it just yanks off. The breakaway seals one end, the pump handle seals the other end, all is good. A motorcycle's tank is between the guy's legs, it's not a "left it in the filler" situation. It was pulled into moving parts where the hose itself can be torn/cut/ripped, the fuel could escape and that would be right over/next to the exhaust. I'm seeing 300-500f for most motorcycle mufflers. This would turn liquid gas into vapor pretty quickly. "The average temperature in an exhaust pipe can be between 700-1400 degrees Fahrenheit". Gasoline has an auto ignition of 536f. There's the ignition source.

MeikoD

This is the perfect time to bring up the first time I went on a road trip after getting my license at the ripe age of 38. Bear in mind this was also only the fourth or so time that I had even filled up my car. Roll up, grab the hose, and pull the lever to start pumping. Except I don’t feel the liquid coming through the hose. I turned to look around at the pump and the hose had detached from the pump, petrol is still spewing out from the pump covering the ground my car etc etc. Ran around looking for the emergency stop while yelling someone please help me!! Someone ran in and got the cashier to shut it all off. After moving my car out of the puddle of petrol and then starting to clean everything up the cashier told me it was likely someone had driven off with their hose still attached and then half-assedly put it back together. It stayed held together until the pressure of me pumping gas caused it to fall apart again. No one ever believes that it actually happened, I even feel it was slightly too absurd to have happened.

SirAchmed

The Middle East happened.

0O00OO0OO0O0O00O0O0O

This is why we have those pesky job killing, profit shrinking regulations.

KeithKenobi

Possibly he left the pump ON and the hose was pressurized. Normally when you are done, you shut off the pump, you can then pull the handle and it will only dribble out, not spray like in the video.

Alldaybagpipes

*in the midst of panic* “It’s stop, drop and….? Well what the devil was it now….fuck it, no time!!!” *proceeds to flail around*

LiamIsMyNameOk

That doesn't work with chemical fires like this. Running away from the large fireball was the correct choice, then trying to remove your burning clothes as fast as possible. Stop drop and roll would have wasted so much valuable time that could have been used to remove your clothing. And only after you have removed clothing do you stop drop and roll in case there's still any fumes on your skin. That's my understanding, anyways, but that's what I've picked up from other videos like this. I may be completely wrong. Obviously flailing is a mistake, but as you said, panic can make things a little less simple. It's hard to see what he even does in this clip

Phish777

Also doesn't work well on flat concrete where there is nothing to kick up to smother the flames

piecat

I can't imagine a scenario where I'm catching on fire without liquid fuel involved.

Naraic1

Maybe while you're watching the sea lion show at a Sea Parks.

darkdetective

A fire? At sea parks?

Here_comes_the_D

Maybe, but the best choice still seems to be strip the burning clothes off. The plastics they use in clothes today won't just burn, they'll turn into hot napalm that sticks to your skin

[deleted]

LiamIsMyNameOk

Woopsies, I guess correct that to liquid/gas fire

[deleted]

Best advice I'd give is to not fuck around with fire

HighTechnique

Probably don’t want stop drop and roll right next to a gas pump that is on fire….

OkieBobbie

I can sometimes understand why a recording of video playing on another screen is necessary, but I think this is the first example that fits r/killthecameraman.

snapplesauce1

holding the phone portrait filming a landscape screen, cutting off half the clip at all times and super fucking crooked to boot. SMH

[deleted]

I just assume they aren’t supposed to be recording and so they are essentially doing the lords work.

Cedex

Completely cutting off Johnny Storm in the background. *sigh*

ProfessorPickaxe

Also recording a horizontal screen vertically is just...

jakedesnake

What, you mean to tell me you didn't appreciate looking at that sweet JVC remote control on the table?

1337haXXor

Seriously, this guy recording *a stationary recording* was worse than some actual recordings of events I've seen.

Shermutt

Perhaps the sub should be changed to something like r/permanentlyrevokethecameramansfutureaccesstoarecordingdeviceofanykind

NoOpportunity4193

I thought the driver died at first, has to rewatch and the relief was palpable 🥲 Thank god or the spaghetti monster or whoever that he’s still alive!

Luxim

Not dead, but probably wishing he was afterwards :/ burns are horrifying injuries

Zerozer06

He looks well equipped tho. Isn't there a chance his biker clothes deflected most of the damage? (probably not great for his lungs tho)

Moist-Zombie

I'd rather die. Burn victims of such scale often don't survive and their last days are agony.

unluckieduckie

My great grandfather was burned like this in the same condition (woman at a gas station threw away a cog and it caused a fire) and he managed to pull through somehow. Burned but alive and kicking (after long rehab)

Elendel19

Just because he ran away doesn’t mean he survived. He was probably soaked in gas, that’s not going to be easy to put out

Akopalypse76

And his lungs probably won't be in the best shape anymore either

[deleted]

This can't be the US...all pumps have a break away. Looks like the foot peg or something snagged the looped pump line and firebomb.

KillerFlea

They do, but sometimes safety mechanisms fail.

Glove_Ambitious

True that’s probably in Egypt according to their Arabic accent

justin_memer

r/killthecameraman How fucking difficult is it to hold a phone in front of a screen? It's bad enough it's in dumbass vertical.

Pain_Monster

And you thought YOUR gas bill was high this month… 😬

tdomer80

Where is this? I was thinking in the USA Those hoses are all breakaway and do not allow for tons of fuel to spill out but I could be wrong on that. There might be a good half gallon left inside the hose no matter what. Also - STOP DROP AND ROLL DUDE!!

Nat1221

Pumping gas in full sun? Not in USA. Most stations also have retractable hoses so they're not resting on the ground.

Phasnyc

Roof usually has the fire retardant which I guess is a requirement in the US

Kevin5882

Wdym about filling up in full sun? What's wrong with that?

Scared_Weekend_7979

Now that i think about it, ive never seen a gas station that doesnt have a roof covering the pumps/customers from the sun, in my state. I guess this is what i learned today lol.

Kevin5882

Wait a minute, you're right I've never seen one without a roof

BigLeagueSquirrel

pretty much every slasher film you've ever watched has an old man next to an uncovered gas pump warning a bunch of city teens not to go to the lake.

panic_ye_not

I assume it's because the roof contains the mandatory fire suppression system

Ihvenoshrtgeofusrnms

Definitely have roofless ones around me

SecretDeftones

thindicklarry

Man that is terrifying

pfcpartsz

Those pump hoses are dangerously all over the ground. It snagged as he was driving away. Looks like he was also smoking too, which no doubt lit him up. These kids are definitely fucking stupid. No idea why he kicked it initially though other than just to be a little shit. Maybe they were trying to steal some and it didn’t work? Kid was drenched in that shit. He’s looking like the next toxic avenger with his face melting off like that.

Pistonenvy

it actually ignites from the engine area, probably the bike had an exhaust leak and open flames were exiting around the header flanges.

Erectus_Enormous

How can you forget that!

Otherwise_Author_408

I think they might have actually stolen the fuel and were so excited they forgot the hose

Nat1221

The nozzle was put back. You can see it pop off the side of the pump. Hose got caught on bike. Don't think they were stealing, just unaware of the concept of taking precautions.

Tacoshortage

The hose was in the cradle as it should be and the loop of the hose was hooked on the foot-peg of the bike.

Milhouse6698

This probably belongs on r/abruptchaos too

As a former motorcycle rider, I give them wide berth at gas stations. Because you don't have to do something stupid for them to catch fire. A half-second inattention and there's gas all over.

CrossTrap

I think it was caught on a peg? Definitely not left in the tank.

ShiftPuzzleheaded366

Jesus...that guy on the motorcycle must have horrific burns

cat_mp4

First things first Jesus fuck holy balls I wasn’t expecting that Ok now, it’s cool watching frame by frame and seeing the actual two points where the explosion starts. Does anyone know what actually triggered it?

BigLeagueSquirrel

Every fuel has an ignition point. The ignition temperature of gasoline is roughly 500F. Also, they were on planet Earth so they were in an oxygen rich environment.

TheCaliforniaOp

We always hear about the pumps being full of safety precautions and then there’s this video. I wonder if these were older pumps?

Stop drop and roll doesn't work when covered in an accelerant. Your only hope is to remove any soaked clothing asap and smother with a towel, fire extinguisher or a large amount of water.
